HASSRA and HASSRA Leeds

IMPORTANT New membership criteria which might save you money!HASSRA has introduced a National Associate Membership Scheme (NAMS) to enable membersto maintain a relationship with HASSRA if they have had to leave the Department for Work andPensions (DWP) or Department of Health (DH) due to a change in government organisation. Thisincludes:

· DH Arms Length Bodies (for example NHS England and Trust Development Authority)

·        DWP staff transferred to My CSP·        Other staff who changed employer but retained a link with the parent Department (either DWP or DH) in the last 12 months.·        Some other former DH/DWP staff previously transferred out·        People who have left DWP or DH on Voluntary Early Severance

The people in the last three categories above must have been members of HASSRA until theirrole changed and then maintained an unbroken period of HASSRA Leeds Associatemembership. Arms length body are not required to demonstrate this.

How much does it cost?NAMS membership is available for £21.60 a year, (the same price as OrdinaryMembership) and considerably cheaper than the usual Associate membershipcost of £33

How is NAMS membership paid?NAMS members must pay a one-off annual fee of £21.60 direct to NationalHASSRA by credit or debit card. Unfortunately, we can’t take deductions fromsalary because of payroll issues.

What’s the difference for NAMS members?NAMS members have the same voting rights as ordinary members, can take advantage of allmember offers and benefits and join National or Regional competitions.

NAMS members can either join the regional HASSRA group they currently reside in or one theyhad previous ties to if they have changed location.

They can’t take part in the National HASSRA Lottery or hold office as a National or RegionalChairperson, Local Club Secretary or Treasurer because there has to be an employmentrelationship with DH or DWP to do this.

What does this mean for HASSRA Leeds Associate members who are entitled tojoin NAMS?If you are a HASSRA Leeds Associate Member in one of the groups listed above, you canconvert to NAMS and claim a refund from HASSRA Leeds of the remaining months of yourAssociate membership.

example:If you work for NHS England in September 2014 and joined HASSRA as an Associate member inMarch, you can claim a refund of 6 months Associate membership, or £10.80.

To join NAMSUse the form on the National HASSRA website to join as a NAM and copy the completed form [email protected] with your HASSRA Leeds Associate membership number (on thewhite card with the purple owl on you were given by the Forum) so that a refund can becalculated.

What if you’re not entitled to join NAMS?

WineClub

5.30p.m. in the RestaurantMeet from 5.00pm in the Woodpecker Bar

Presented by: Tess Brooke

Tess has visited her favourite wine merchants in Harrogate, Ake and Humphris, who have helped toselect the wines. There will be one refreshing white wine and five reds – well, ‘Spain is all about redwine, isn’t it?’ We shall see on the night. The white is from Rueda, to be followed by two from the Rioja region – but only one is made from thetypical rioja grape of tempranillo. Then there’s a tinto roble from Ribera del Duero, a Barbazul fromCadiz, and from Castilla Y Leon a wine which is said to be wonderful – don’t let the awful green labelput you off the contents..!

The event should be around £9 for HASSRA members.

What's Coming Up?Thursday 9th October: Best of Beaujolais (not Nouveau)Presented by Brian PhillipsCertainly not Nouveau, indeed just the opposite. Nouveau has become so unpopular that manyvignerons have stopped selling it.

We shall be tasting the Crus of Beaujolais of which there are 10!For example: Morgon, Moulin-a-Vent, Fleurie, Brouilly, Cotes de Brouilly, Julienas, Chenas, Chiroubles,Regnie and St Amour. All quite different depending on the terroir and their particular micro climate. We shall let you knowwhich we have chosen in due course.Needless to say, all are good. How well will they compare with Rhone Crus? We shall see!The event should be around £9 for HASSRA members.

SPECIAL OFFER REMINDER: Don’t forget our special offer : Any HASSRA Leeds member who attends the wine club for thefirst time pays only half price for the event. And if you decide you like it enough to join the club, the night is free. For furtherinformation contact any of us:

HASSRA once again generously supported our five-a-side competition, this year at Football World. TheTournament could not go ahead without theirsponsorship so it is a valuable membership benefit forthose who play football.

At one stage we had fifteen teams but two droppedout at the last minute. Was it pressures of work, or werethey quaking in their shin pads about facing themighty Captain Haddock Fan Club? I leave it to ourreaders to make up their minds.

So, thirteen teams and eighty players left their desks atlunchtime, all dreaming of glory and hat-tricks. Foreleven of the teams there would be tears andheartache instead.

It seems to me that, for £3 each, players have a Fridayafternoon off work to play football, meet old chumsand give them vulgar abuse. This is followed by abuffet and beer and, the best of all, deciding whythey hadn’t won more games. Was it mostly bad luck, wilful referees, or fantastic goal-keeping?

Mixed Teams

I was asked by the exotically named Murder onZidane’s Floor if there was any objection to mixedteams. I said no, although I was a bit anxious. Therecan be an edge to some of the games. Some of theplayers are under the delusion that winning is moreimportant than taking part and tend towardsnaughtiness.

It turned out I didn’t need to worry. Kasia Lipka, whowas the lady on the team, plays in central midfield forDoncaster Rovers Belles. She is much more skilful thanmost of the men who were there, and is verycomposed on the ball.

Kasia has progressed through the England set up fromU15 and is currently a member of the U23 squad. Let’shope she makes the full team soon. She was also partof the Great Britain squad in Kazan that won Gold inthe World University Games 2013.

After the tournament Kasia told me that she hadn’texpected any special treatment from the players, andfelt well able to look after herself. She plays fives mostweeks with colleagues in Quarry House.

Kasia is the first woman player I’ve seen in QH fortwenty years, although to be fair I don’t play in everygame. I know there used to be a women’s footballteam but I’m not sure if it still exists.

I would be happy, if we have funding for anothertournament next year, to organise a women’scompetition to run alongside the men’s. Is there thedemand for that? I think to make it worthwhile wewould need at least four teams.

The Mules first game was against Two+ Two= Five. Just before half time Ian Kay scored for the Mules. He gave the defence a body swerve and lashed the ball beyond the keeper’s left hand. “Pick that out of the net,” he thought. The second half was evenly balanced and Matt Marsh equalised so that the game was drawn.

In the next game the Mules played Murder onZidane’s Floor. It was a tense first half with chances onboth sides. After half-time the Murderers stuck thedagger in and scored twice through Charles Keenanand Abdul Munaim.

The third group game was against Limpar's Left Foot. After a tight first half Limpar banged one in. The Mulespressed and Chris Kateregga hit the bar with one shotand the post with another. After more pressure VinceMihill equalised. With the last kick of the gamehowever, Bryn Shorney banged one in, leaving theMule’s keeper clutching at thin air. As the Mulestrooped off a wag in the crowd said, “Close boys butno cigar!”

In the fourth game against Dynamo 1W60 the first halfwas again end to end but no one could score. At thestart of the second half Vince Mihill thought, “Pele eatyou heart out,” and shot straight at goal. The keepersaved and the ball rebounded to Ian Kay. He said tohimself, to revisit the old joke, “the keeper saves andIan nets the rebound.”

Dynamo 1W60 then equalised. The Mules came backhowever and Chris scored twice in quick succession.Dynamo kept going, and scored again. The Muleswere living on their nerves but held on for 3-2. That leftthem third and they went through to the Plate semi-final.

Death or Glory

In the semi-final the Mules played the ZombieCoalition. Just to make it interesting the games lastedfifty per cent longer that those in the group stages. Itwas a tight game with chances for both sides. Close

to the end however, Ian Kay scored again. So thatwas it - 1-0 and a place in the final for the Mules.

In the Plate final the Mules came up against GoingHollywood. Although Ed Aveyard hit the angle of postand bar Going Hollywood were on top and scoredtwice in the first half.

Vince Mihill had been annoying the referee and

received a rubber ear for his trouble. Riled by thisVince thought, “I’ll show them.” He scored with anabsolute thunderbolt into the top corner. The ref wasnot won over by this however and, after Vincecommitted some further fouls, he sent him to the sinbin to contemplate the error of his ways. Only havingfour men made it impossible for the Mules. GoingHollywood scored again to lift the Plate by three goalsto one.

Paddy Harrison, captain of Going Hollywood, said, “Getting together to play football with friends and colleagues is great anyway, but HASSRA’s support for this event really helps to make it a top day out for everyone.”

Haddocks Pay the Penalty

Meanwhile, in a galaxy far, far away the Haddocksstarted their tournament.

There were only four teams in this group so the gameslasted longer. Given that two of the Haddocks madeMethuselah look like a spring chicken, this was adisadvantage.

The first game was against The Zombie Coalition.

The Haddocks started well and at half time were 2-1up. Richard Thomas scored both. Then, alas, theirminds wandered and they thought they had done

enough to win. But the Zombies lived up to their nameand rose from the dead. They scored two in thesecond half so won 3-2! The third goal took a wilddeflection and sent the keeper the wrong. Just showshow close the margin is between defeat and victory. The Haddocks trooped off and wondered how theyhad managed to let the game slip away from them.

Before the next game, against Five Men in Flight, PaulRobinson said – “we need to buck our ideas up thistime. Let’s go for it.”

So the Haddocks went for it and Five Men in Flight, fledafter a 4-0 pummelling. Richard Thomas got three andNick Heaps scored the other. Nick said, “In everytournament we always give someone a skelping, it’sjust a shame that we can’t be consistent about it.”

This was shown in the final game against RealSosobad. After two rounds every team in this group

had won a game, so any two of the four couldpotentially go forward to glory, or adjourn to the barinstead.

At half time it was 0-0. Lots of pressure from bothteams but the ball just wouldn’t go in. It remained thatway until two minutes to go. A Sosobad playerwandered into their box. Penalty! Up stepped RichardThomas to take the Haddocks through. The ball hit thepost, rebounded and a Real player raced after it. Sodid Richard. On the edge of the box Richard “ca’dthe pins from him.”

Can you believe it - a penalty for Sosobad. I havenever, in the thousand years I’ve played, seen apenalty awarded for anything other thanencroachment. Richard said, “Well, you learnsomething new every day, but I could have donewithout learning about that!”

A minute to go. Sosobad stepped up. Brian Mullowneydived to clutch the ball out of the air. The ball hit alump in the floor and bounced over Brian into the net.Tears and heartache for the Haddocks. Off they wentto spend some quality time with their shampoo bottles. The Haddocks philosopher Quentin Cleale said, “ahwell, there is always next year.”

Elsewhere in the tournament

Players in other teams have not come forward withtheir fanciful accounts of progress, or lack of it. Andyou know I hate making things up! The results arebelow.
