WISEMAN

In volume one of the Wiseman Family and Allied Lines by Eugene M. Wiseman, William Edward Wiseman is identified as the immigrant ancestor of this Wiseman family. Because documentation is incomplete it is difficult to assess the accuracy of this work. The portrait Eugene Wiseman and others paint of William Edward Wiseman is one of a most remarkable person of multiple talents and accomplishments .1

According to the Wiseman Family and Allied Lines, the sixth child of William Edward and his wife Mary (Davenport) Wiseman was Martin Wiseman born probably in Rowan (later Burke, now Avery) County , North Carolina, 24 August 1773. This book further states that Martin married Sarah White, daughter of Benjamin White, and died in 1838 in Benton County, Tennessee . 2

Among the extracts of earliest Wiseman/Davenport history/genealogy included at the end of this compilation , those from the Wiseman Family and Allied Lines and Avery County, NC Biographies, "Captain Martin Davenport, 1745-1815," probably are the most factual.

The research presented here begins with Benjamin White Wiseman, purportedly the son of Martin and Sarah (White) Wiseman. 3 Benjamin was born on 14 January 1800.4 There is a conflict concerning his birthplace . Both Eugene Wiseman and Fred Coffey state Benjamin was born in North Carolina .5 Yet in the 1850 U.S . Census for Miller County, Missouri , Benjamin indicates he was born in South Carolina. 6 As per the 1800 U.S. Census for North Carolina, Martin Wiseman was living there in Burke County in 1800,7 so a South Carolina birthplace is unlikely .

An attempt for a consensus among Benjamin's children regarding his birthplace as shown by them in the 1880 and later U.S. censuses failed as they named variously North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky and Tennessee. 8

On 22 March 1818 in Allen County, Kentucky , Benjamin Wiseman married Sarah Winfrey, daughter of James and Winifred (Wimberly) Winfrey. 9

Benjamin is shown on the Simpson County, Kentucky, U.S . Census for 1820, but also on the Allen County, Kentucky, Tax Lists from 1819 through 1824.10 At least by 1828 Benjamin's family had relocated to Henry County, Tennessee, where Sarah's parents were living. 11

About 1832 Benjamin and Sarah moved to what subsequently in 1837 became Miller County, Missouri .12 Two years later Sarah ' s parents also made the move. 13 On 15 August 1838 Benjamin Wiseman and James Winfrey signed a petition for the creation of the Miller County township which was to become Glaze. 14

Apparently Sarah (Winfrey) Wiseman died before 1840 as she is m1ssmg from the Benjamin Wiseman household in the 1840 U.S . Census .15 According to Miller County, Missouri , court records on 12 September 1848, Benjamin Wiseman petitioned the court for a divorce from his then wife Rhoda .1 Benjamin had married Rhoda (Barnett) Wade probably in adjoining Camden County, however those records are no longer extant. 17 On 11 April 1850 Benjamin's divorce petition was dismissed and he and Rhoda are shown living in the same household in the 1850 U.S. Census for Miller County . 18

In June 1859 there is a Miller County marriage for a Benjamin Wiseman and Susan Cook. It is not known if this refers to the Benjamin Wiseman of this study.19

Benjamin White Wiseman died 7 August 1870 at the Miller County home of his son James Madison Wiseman. 20 He and Sarah probably were buried on their homestead .

Benjamin and Sarah's daughter Surrelda/Sarilda was born 16 August 1824 in Allen or Simpson County, Kentucky.21 In Miller County, Missouri, on 2 September 1842 Surrelda married Mathias Meredith, son of Daniel and Margaret (O'Neal) Meredith of adjoining Camden County.22

Surrelda (Wiseman) Meredith died 20 March 1863 and Mathias Meredith died 10 August 1906.23

Both are buried in Glover Chapel Cemetery, Camden County, Missouri.

4Fred R. Coffey, Rt. 9, Short Ln. Rd., Kingsport, TN 37663, to the compiler, January, 1980. Mr. Coffey's is some of the most complete and accurate research on the Benjamin Wiseman family as he had indirect access to some early Wiseman Bible records .* Eugene M. Wiseman gives Benjamin's birth year as 1799, however the 1840 Miller County census favors the 1800 date, while the 1850 Miller County census indicates Benjamin was born about 1798.

NOTES - Chart No. WISEMAN-1

1. In an attempt to document the birthplace of Benjamin Wiseman his 1850 and the 1880 and 1900 census enumerations of his children were consulted. The results were all over the map: North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky and Tennessee. In the 1850 census for Miller County, MO, (reference 15 on the previous pagel. Benjamin has listed his birthplace as South Carolina This is not in agreement with TJJe Wisema.o Fa.mily a.od AllJed Lines (reference 13 on the previous pagel.

2. According to Fred Coffey on 12 Sep 1848 Benjamin Wiseman petitioned in Miller County, MO, Circuit Court for a divorce from his wife Rhoda On 11 Apr 1850 the petition was dismissed and in the 1850 Miller County, MO, census they are recorded living in the same household (See reference 15 on the previous pagel. Marriage records for Miller County, Book A259, list a marriage 5 Jun 1859 for Benjamin Wiseman and Susan Cook It is not known if this refers to Benjamin Wiseman, father of this family group.

3. It has not been possible to locate George Washington Wiseman in U.S. Censuses or other records. The George Washington Wiseman of Mississippi County, MO, which some researchers have identified as this George Washington Wiseman, was in fact the son of John Wiseman of Mississippi County, MO.

4. Mary's maiden name had been recorded by Fred Coffey as "Schuthfield." This is probably a corruption of Crutchfield, in view of the fact that a number of the Wiseman's neighbors in Marion County, IL, where Mary apparently was from, were named Crutchfield Crutchfield seems a more likely surname.

Additional Extracts from THE WISEMAN FAMILY AND ALLLLIED LINES

by Eugene M. Wiseman

The Davenports had moved from Virginia to John's River area, and were one of the first families to settle there. They moved to the Toe River region (now Avery County) sometime after William and Mary married, but it is difficult to establish the exact date. Clearly they were in the Toe River area in 1780 by the time the march to King's Mountain took place since King's Mountain and Its Heroes by Lyman C. Draper, page 178, gives as part of the trail followed by the Over-the-Mountain Men and "thence down the Toe to the spring on the Davenport place."

p. 7 William Edward Wiseman joined the Mountain Men as a patriot in 1780. In Western North Carolina, A History from 1730 to 1913 by John Preston Arthur, the author includes a section entitled "Western North Carolinians Won the Revolutionary War" in which he states:

"Representatives of several Revolutionary soldiers reside in these mountains; among whom are the Alexanders, Davidsons, Forster, McDowells, Coffees, Bryans, Penlands, Wisemans, Allens, Welches, and scores of others who fought in North Carolina."

~

Both William and his oldest son Thomas fought at King's Mountain, but amot recorded in any Revolutionary War Rolls, for like others that Arthur spoke of, they went as patriots at their own expense. The only Revolutionary War service of which William Wiseman ri ceived pay was for the time when he took a wagon loaded with hides, tools and lasts and traveled to a place where American soldiers were being quartered. He repaired the shoes that were in need of it and made new ones for the soldiers whose shoes were beyond repair.

It is recorded in the military records of North Carolina Department of Archives and History under "W", Volume IX, page 28, folio 2, that William was paid $&.16 with interests for he repair of the soldier's shoes. This is the only proof of William's Revolutionary service.
