MPRC collaborates with three local universities to establish Oil and Gas-focused R&D clusters

HIGHLIGHTS

Malaysia Petroleum Resources Corporation (MPRC) in November

2015 exchanged three memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with Universiti Malaya, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and Universiti Teknologi Petronas. This paves the way to the establishment of three research and development clusters to form industry-academia partnerships that will support the growth of Malaysian technologies and talents in the oil & gas services and equipment (OGSE) sector.

The three clusters, also known as Oil & Gas Innovation and Technology Clusters (OGITeC) will be advancing innovations and technology development in the following areas: Subsurface Technology (UM), Marine Systems (UTM), and Topside Process Engineering (UTP).

To mark the start of industry-academia partnerships, Vice Chancellors from the three technology clusters also exchanged MoUs with three leading OGSE firms in Malaysia to embark on technology development projects:

• UM with MIT Technologies Sdn Bhd, designer and manufacturer of Intelligent Circulation While Drilling (iCWD) tools

• UTP with Satumarin Sdn Bhd, offshore marine services and logistics provider

• UTM with ProEight Sdn Bhd, offshore engineering consulting firm and Malaysia leading mechanical seal manufacturer for O&G industry

MPRC sees these partnerships as a vital step in ensuring Malaysian players are highly competitive to become strong regional players. This is crucial as Malaysia progresses to become a technological and innovation centre for the oil & gas industry in Asia-Pacific.

Datuk Shahrol Halmi, President and Chief Executive Officer of MPRC, said: “MPRC hopes to catalyse more active, win-win collaborations between academia and the industry, resulting in indigenous technologies and subject matter experts.”

“The exchange of MoUs today represents a concrete step in fostering closer cooperation between industry players MIT Technologies, ProEight Sdn Bhd, SatuMarin Sdn Bhd and the universities UM, UTM and UTP, respectively. To achieve our vision for Malaysia as a hub for OGSE activities and technological innovation, we need local companies to step up and develop local technologies,” he said.

These collaborations are underpinned by the OGSE technology development agenda in the 11th Malaysia Plan. These measures will significantly strengthen Malaysian companies and enhance manpower throughout the society. Ultimately, these development will help encourage growth in the broader economy and take Malaysia a step closer toward becoming an advanced nation by 2020.

Malaysia has one of the most developed oil & gas industry in Southeast Asia. Following the discovery of oil in 1910 in Sarawak, the industry has grown by leaps and bounds to become the world’s second-largest exporter of liquefied natural gas and the second-largest oil and

natural gas producer in Southeast Asia. This journey, led by national oil company PETRONAS, has helped to create more than 3,000 OGSE companies in Malaysia. This also serves as an excellent base to position Malaysia as the hub for OGSE activities in the region.

Yet, a majority of these companies are agents of foreign technologies. To remain relevant, these companies need to move up the value chain by developing its own technology and improve technical competencies to support the Government’s vision for Malaysia to become a regional OGSE hub.

ProEight: For Market Success, Solve Prospects’ Problems

FOCUS

Mechanical seals are the crux of optimal pump performance in any

mega upstream and downstream energy infrastructure project: excessive leakages from seals fitted to pumps meant increased maintenance costs and downtime. In an exploration and production project, this could mean more than 200 barrels per day of lost production per platform.

ProEight Sdn Bhd reckons its mechanical seals are more than capable of reducing leakages and downtime. This Malaysian-based firm, which started designing its mechanical seals in 2005, is currently the only company in Southeast Asia with a patented component within mechanical seals. And in this global industry that is traditionally dominated by well-established US and European manufacturers and suppliers, ProEight stood out.

“When we first ventured into the mechanical seals market, we were up against four large corporations. And it has been quite a journey for us. We were told many times that our bid to tap in to the global mechanical seals market in 2006 was nonsense. To me however, I saw it as our bid to challenge existing standards and question what the norm was then,” Azhar Zainal Abidin, founder and managing director of ProEight said.

Challenging the norm was exactly what ProEight sought to do. Mechanical seals that were typically deployed in the oil and gas industry consist of around 10 to 15

components. But by taking a close look at the existing models and keeping tabs on their lifespans, Azhar was able to tweak and fine-tune the product. Over time, Azhar’s ProEight garnered a 93% market share of mechanical seals in Malaysia’s oil and gas industry as of November 2015, and is gearing towards capturing Southeast Asia and Middle-East’s markets.

Simplification was the key. ProEight modified the seals’ design by reducing the number of internal components. “Keeping designs simple minimises failure points and reduces maintenance. This ultimately meant improved reliability as well as performance,” Azhar said.

He also opted to adopt the use of computer numerical control manufacturing machines. By using 3D computer aided design technology and smart manufacturing, ProEight has reduced the design lifecycle of mechanical seals from design to installation to just within 24 hours. This compares with the typical 12-week period it takes for ProEight’s competitors to deliver the same product.

“Our aim was really, to take one item and look at ways to make it even better, be it in terms of trimming the lifecycle or incorporating new technology. We were successful in our bid to make [mechanical seals] work well because we told the oil and gas players to give us their worst pumps. And we invested a lot of time in getting to the heart of the problems faced by the players,” Azhar said.

A large oil and gas multinational firm took up on Azhar’s offer. “This company came to us for solutions to reduce the frequency of their pump repairs outside the scheduled outages. It was a crucial job, because if we can fix it, we earn the trust of the industry. In the short period that we have been able to address the issues, the two pumps did not experience any major leakage for a year.”

“For that, we were given a three-year contract. And this is really sums up why innovation is crucial, particularly in the current oil price climate. Oil companies today seek out practical and inexpensive application of products in the field, so there is a pressing need for Malaysian oilfield services firms to put their heart into innovation and improve their product offerings,” he said.

But ProEight is optimistic about navigating the industry headwinds. It has an arsenal of patents and it consistently pours around 30% of its annual revenue into research and development; the company has international ambitions as well. ProEight has in recent years venture abroad as a supplier to PETRONAS and other oil companies to Thailand, U.S. and the Philippines, among others.

“A lot of companies fear change and failure and hence are unwilling to innovate. My hope is that the current climate will serve as an impetus for more Malaysian oilfield services firm to develop new and disruptive technologies that will reshape the oil and gas landscape,” Azhar said.
