JUNE 2019

SC Life Member Susan Stout has been awarded the President’s Cup

for her pending world record East African Defassa Waterbuck.

DSC’s April Monthly Meeting brings members together to celebrate the annual Trophy and Photo Award presentation. This year, there were over 150 entries for the Trophy Awards, spanning 22 countries and almost 100 different species.

As photos of all the entries played during cocktail hour, the room was abuzz with stories of all the incredible adventures experienced – ibex in Spain, scenic helicopter rides over the Northwest Territories, puku in Zambia.

In determining the winners, the judges had hard decisions to make when they met during Mogambo in January. This well-experienced group considers several criteria such as rarity of species, difficulty of hunt, method of take, and overall score when going through the entries.

After the winners are selected for region, method of take, youth and ladies categories, one entry receives the overall prize – the President’s Cup. This year’s winner was Susan Stout for her East African Defassa Waterbuck from Uganda.

All hunts taken in the last three years from the deadline are eligible. Send in your entries early for next year’s deadline of December 15, 2019. You might become the next President’s Cup winner!

Congratulations to Susan, and to all the winners listed on pages 4-7. CT

Scott Tobermann, DSC President

s Debbie and I walked out of our local polling place last month, we heard a “Hey, DSC” from across the parking lot. You never know what reaction you might get

to your DSC shirts when you are out in public. Will it be a fellow hunter or an anti-hunter or maybe someone who just wants to

know what DSC is all about? It turns out that it was a fellow Life Member who was working for one of the local city council candidates. She hadn’t been involved with the club for a while and was interested in re-engaging. It’s always great to meet a member that you don’t know and to make a new friend.

But what if it had been a closed-minded anti-hunter? Usually arguing with these people is not worth your time. If you do choose to engage them, you can find no better example for handling the situation than from our own executive director – calm and respectful, but unapologetic about the facts that support the conservation through hunting model.

The most exciting scenario, in my opinion, is the curious and open-minded person. There is so much you can do with the simple, open-ended question, “What is Dallas Safari Club?”

Personally, I’ve found significant success talking to some of my veterinary colleagues (some of the “cityfied” ones lean toward anti-hunting) when I point out the projects that we fund that restore animals to native habitat. And yes, in some cases this includes animals that will never be hunted. You can see the awakening in their eyes when they realize that hunters care about and, more importantly, give their resources to ensure species continue to exist in the wild for future generations. I also like to point out the cases where animal numbers have dramatically increased over the past century thanks to hunters’ dollars and hard work.

If you’re not confident articulating these points on your own, you can always direct interested people to our websites, www.biggame.org and www.DSCF.org. There, they will find engaging videos with story after story touting the benefits that hunting brings to both people and animals. At the very least, it is important to provide a different viewpoint to consider. Hopefully, you may have planted a seed that eventually leads to recruitment of a new hunter and fellow DSC member.

DSC FOUNDATION

e should be proud of all the DSC Foundation accomplishments

since its inception in July 2016. It could not have been done without the dedication of past leaders in Jim Tolson and Richard Cheatham and the members of the Board that served with them. Richard Cheatham was instrumental in the formation of our Foundation. I personally could not be prouder of our decision to hire an Executive Director for the Foundation and to have those shoes filled by Richard. He is doing a great job for us. We will go far with his continued leadership.

The lifeblood of the Foundation is DSC and all of the hard-working members of the DSC 100, our exhibitors and participants of our Convention. DSC’s 2015 Strategic Business Plan triggered the formation of the DSC Foundation as the charitable receiving and giving arm of DSC. Since inception, individual and

corporate donations to the Foundation, the DSC Chapters as well as other donors, are already making a huge difference.

DSCF recently contracted with WBDIV LLC and Buddy DuVall to provide his expertise in fundraising that will help us build endowment funds and create a better infrastructure to become more active in fundraising. This new infrastructure particularly involves new software Salesforce, customized to meet our needs and provide the means to effectively and efficiently raise funds. It will also track grants and will integrate with other available fundraising sources such as WealthEngine and Geopointe mapping. Once in place in the next few weeks, we will be able to identify potential donors in specific areas.

We are considering new aspects of donor recognition such as branding the levels of giving and the possibility of creating recognition societies or circles

as well as ways to give. It is our new DSC Foundation Conservation Partner Donor Recognition Program. It will be in two principal parts consisting of our Conservation Partners from $5,000 to $1 million plus at various recognition levels and our Legacy Society for our Planned Giving and Endowment. This will enhance our Donor Wall presentation also.

Finally, we will be upgrading our website to include more information available to our donors in the various ways to give. We will be developing new marketing materials and web content to support our programs and mission. Our infrastructure is almost in place and then we begin expanding in earnest our fundraising efforts.

We contracted with Safari Classics Productions in March to provide us with a multi-faceted approach to getting the word out, stepping up our media

messaging campaign in support of our conservation efforts and educating the public. This has been a good move for us by producing videos highlighting the recent markhor hunt and recent positive developments in Botswana. Most recently, they have produced a Mantheakis series of videos featuring Michel Mantheakis, and will be releasing a five-part series of Conservation Perspective, filmed at our convention with industry notables discussing hunting as a conservation tool.

Through our continued media messaging and continued participation in our hunting industry leaders in conservation such as Wild Harvest Initiative, Conservation Force, Sportsman Alliance, Wild Sheep Foundation, CIC,

IUCN, SULi, CITES, Congressional Sportsman Foundation, and others, we are making an impact as the leading Conservation Through Hunting organization. We are seizing the moment!

Last, but not least, I want to extend a special thank you to all our DSC Board and our DSC Foundation Board for their insightful leadership, guidance and assistance in getting us to this point. In addition, we could not be where we are today without Jamie Cowan and Tracy Corliss in handling our administrative requirements. Our team is working, and we are paving the way to a bright future for our Foundation. You can help by considering a donation to DSCF and helping us find new donor sources in and out of our hunting community. CT

INDUSTRY NEWS

ased on the funds raised by sportsmen and women last year, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will distribute more

than $1 billion across the 50 states to support wildlife habitat conservation and increased access for outdoor recreation.

These funds come from the excise taxes on hunting, shooting and fishing equipment, as well as boat fuel.

The Pittman-Robertson and Dingell-Johnson Acts call for the funds to be distributed to state wildlife agencies. These state agencies also distribute funds each year on their own.

In 2018, the USFWS hit the $20 billion mark in distributions,

while the state wildlife agencies have just passed $7 billion this year. A majority of the state wildlife agency funds are also derived from sportsmen and women through hunting and fishing license sales. Hunters fingerprints are all over the funds that keep many conservation projects going.

Although amended several times over the decades, the commonly known Pittman-Robertson Act was approved in 1937 by Franklin D. Roosevelt and has been funding wildlife conservation initiatives ever since. CT

o meet the needs of an ever-growing audience, DSC has partnered with several media teams for programming that

will spread the mission and message of DSC and DSC Foundation. DSC continues as the title sponsor for “Trailing the Hunter’s

Moon,” a television show with co-hosts Larry Weishuhn and Blake Barnett on the Pursuit Channel. Additionally, DSC is the title sponsor for “Tracks Across Africa” on Outdoor Channel, and sponsors “Hornady’s Dark and Dangerous” on Sportsman Channel.

DSC also sponsors “Trijicon’s World of Sports Afield” which is seen on Sportsman Channel.

DSC returns as the title sponsor for Big Billy Kinder Outdoors talk radio which has moved to SiriusXM, as of June 1. From humble beginnings on one radio station in Dallas/Fort Worth, BBKO Radio will become a part of the Salem family of programming on Family Talk SiriusXM 131.

DSC is also the title sponsor for Lone Star Radio with Cable Smith.

DSC Foundation has contracted Safari Classics Productions to create a strong media campaign (read about it on page 2). These videos will be circulated on social media channels, including Facebook, YouTube and Instagram.

Expanding further into the digital space, “DSC’s Untamed Heritage” is a new podcast. Join hosts Larry Weishuhn and Ken Milam and their guests for a weekly campfire talk regarding wildlife, conservation, hunting, fishing and the outdoor lifestyle. Listeners will be entertained in addition to learning more about North American conservation. CHAPTER NEWS

n conjunction with its donations to Sheep Dog Impact Assistance (see box), this year, DSC Lubbock Sportsman’s

Club shows its support of military veterans by sending a Marine Corps veteran on a bear hunt in Idaho.

SSgt Robert J. Houser (USMC, Retired) tells the story:First of all, I would like to say thank you to everyone

who made this trip possible for me. Since retiring from the Marine Corps last year, I have struggled daily with everyday life. Not only from being disabled and having difficulty doing routine tasks, but also mentally as well. This hunt has shown me that I am capable of doing more than I was told by doctors, therapists and even myself. It has given me a sense of accomplishment as one of the most challenging and rewarding things I have done since retirement.

The staff at Heavens Gate Outfitters were top notch. Not only was I welcomed immediately upon arrival but was made to feel at home and at ease while I was there. I also had the opportunity to meet another Marine. Immediately, we found out that we served together overseas but never met each other in the fleet. This was fantastic as we connected and talked about the shared hardships we went through.

During the hunt, I had the opportunity to push myself beyond what I thought my limits were. I hiked 300 yards down a mountain to a treed bear, which was amazing. The part that was even better was making it back up the mountain. That was the most satisfying feeling I have felt in a while. I also had the chance to hike up the mountain 500 yards to a treed bear. This was definitely more challenging, but with the encouragement of the guides and everyone else there, I was able to make it. The feeling of making it all the way up there was indescribable as I had accomplished something I thought was impossible.

Being able to harvest a bear for me was so incredible, but to do it surrounded by great people made it even better. This adventure has truly changed the way I think about myself, and my capabilities as well. I hope to keep striving forward knowing where I have been and the obstacles I have overcome.

Semper fidelis,Robert J. Houser, SSgt USMC RetiredJob well done SSgt Houser and thank you for your

service. CT

SC Life Member and DSC 100 volunteer Billy Shoemaker passed away on April 13 after a brief illness. Billy served DSC as a longstanding

volunteer at the annual convention on the Security Committee, and was also an instructor for many years at the S.A.F.E.T.Y. Extravaganza. Billy was 60.

At the time of his death, Billy was a partner in a pest control company and an accomplished angler and hunter. His fondest hours were spent volunteering for DSC and fishing with his friends in the club. Whenever this author saw him at events, he always had photos to show of fishing and tales to tell about his friends and their adventures. Billy was also a very knowledgeable BBQ consumer and critic. He knew nearly every BBQ joint in six counties, and could also recommend good Tex-Mex restaurants in out of the way places throughout Texas.

Billy’s DSC family and friends will miss him greatly. Larry Weishuhn was proud to call Billy a “dear and special friend.” David Hood, Mark Cavanaugh and others have expressed their sorrow at his passing. Billy will be very hard to forget.

DSC extends its condolences to all those who knew and loved him. CT

raveling to Tanzania? Take note of the following notice on the country’s plastic ban.As of June 1, 2019, Tanzania has banned the use of import, export, manufacture,

sale and storage of most types of plastic bags. Visitors to Tanzania are advised to avoid the use of any plastic carrier bags in both their carry-on and check-in luggage to avoid any inconvenience at the airport of arrival. Your luggage will be checked and interpretation from customs officials may vary and result in undue harassment and fines.

The notice does mention that “Ziploc bags” specifically used to carry toiletries will be allowed, as they are expected to remain in the permanent possession of the visitors. Plastic packaging for food items, which directly covers and is in contact with the food item, is not prohibited as it is deemed necessary. So if you are carrying snacks for your safari, that should not be a problem.

If you buy any Duty-Free items en route to Tanzania please ensure that you dispose of any plastic bag seal and the Duty Free bag prior to entry into Tanzania to avoid any inconvenience.

Tanzania Hunting Operators Association (TAHOA) suggests that you avoid the use of any plastic bags and use clear plastic toiletry bags for your toiletries, liquids, medicines etc., which are reusable. CT

CONVENTION NEWS

otel reservations for the DSC Convention and Sporting Expo will open Monday, June 17, 2019.

The DSC Heritage Convention will be held January 9-12, 2020 at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas, Texas. Last year’s Convention set new records for attendance and dollars raised for conservation, so please plan to be a part of the 2020 Convention and Sporting Expo.

With approximately 35,500 attendees, 1,000 exhibitors, 50 corporate sponsors, 6,000 DSC members but just 925 available rooms at the Omni Dallas Hotel, attempting to book a room with the Omni often created frustration for everyone, as the hotel sold out within minutes of opening.

As a solution to this problem, DSC has implemented a new booking strategy. By June 17, any available rooms at the Omni will have been pre-allocated to exhibitors with more than 30 years with DSC, exhibitors with the highest credits, corporate sponsors, and staff and contractors required to run the

Convention. Those that fall into these categories have already been contacted.

DSC Executive Director Corey Mason said, “We understand that no matter what solution we choose to solve this problem, someone will be disappointed. However, we hope this will help eliminate some of the opening day stress and pressure that many have experienced in the past.”

There are 15 nearby hotels in the DSC block that have more than enough rooms to accommodate everyone. Complimentary shuttle service will be provided between the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center and each of these hotels.

More information with specific instructions on booking hotel rooms will be sent via email, and will also be posted on the DSC Convention page of www.biggame.org.

For more information, please call Cass Olmstead at 480-319-0866. CT

Daniel McGehee gets ready for Round 1 of the Big Bore Shoot.

Veronica Goode lines up for her first shot. The top shooters from the Twelfth Annual Big Bore Shoot were first place finisher David Harrell (center), second place David Hunt (right) and third place Dub Day (left).

CLUB NEWS

fter a very rainy week in Dallas in early May, everyone was itching to get out to Fossil Pointe Sporting Grounds for the 12th Annual Big Bore Shoot on

Saturday, May 4. A few participants were Big Bore Shoot first-timers, and it was even the first DSC

event for some. As always, the shooting was impressive from the start, with several shooters

claiming a perfect score through the first two rounds. The first round, set up 70 yards from the targets, has both one-point and two-point

targets in each lane. Shooters take three shots from shooting sticks. The highest score would be hitting the two-point target with each shot, totaling six.

For the second round, shooters moved up to 30 yards from the targets to take three shots off-hand. Again, the highest score for the round would be six points.

Tension was high as the shooters headed to the third round and the moving target. One by one, when the moving target is released, shooters attempts as many shots as they can while the target is in motion. There are both brain and heart targets on the moving target.

As the round continued, very few were making contact on the moving target, with many top shooters finishing with that 12-point score from the first two rounds.

At the end of the line-up, David Harrell walked up. All he had to do was get a point in the final round to take the win. If he was nervous, he didn’t show it as he called, “Pull,” and hit that one-point target confidently. First place was his!

Now, there was a six-way shoot out for second and third places between Charlie Barnes, Dub Day, Karl Evans, David Hunt, Marty Markl, and John Patterson.

In the end, David Hunt had the closest shot for second place, and Dub Day took third.

After a great morning of shooting, everyone gathered for some great BBQ and cookies from Fossil Pointe.

Congratulations to the winners, great job to all the shooters, and we look forward to seeing you next year. CT

CONSERVATION NEWS

n May 2-4, DSC participated in the International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation (CIC)’s international conference in Namibia.

This year’s title was “Crossroads – Leading the Way For Wildlife Conservation.” At a time when wildlife conservation efforts appear to be at a crossroads, this conference brought together various stakeholders to discuss related issues from African, European, and global perspectives, as well as taking a unique look at the important roles that youth and women will play in the future success of conservation.

DSC Executive Director Corey Mason was on the panel entitled “Visions for Wildlife Conservation in North America.” Mason outlined the main challenge in North America for the future is reaching the 90 percent of Americans who have no firsthand knowledge of hunting or the importance of the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation.

Mason was joined on this panel by Ronald Regan, executive director of the U.S. Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, who also called for the importance of embracing new audiences and showing how conservation affects us all.

The panel was rounded out by Shane Mahoney of Conservation Visions who analyzed the current wildlife crisis. He said, “We currently have too few people who care, the people that do care are divided, and there not enough funds to support wildlife conservation.” CT

CONSERVATION SOCIETY NEWS

any outdoor enthusiasts came together for the annual Crawfish Fest on Saturday, May 18, to enjoy plenty of crawfish and BBQ

in order to support the DSC Foundation. Despite the impending heavy rain, the well-attended event brought DSC members together with guests who have never hunted and wanted to know more.

The final attendance and funds raised from the event are still being tallied; however, the silent auction alone brought in $2,335.

The event would not have been a success without the efforts of the DSC Conservation Society volunteers, DSC Staff and Board members, donors, and the friendly group at Tailwaters Fly Fishing Co.

Among attendees was a group from Benchmark Bank and we thank them for sponsoring this year’s event. Thanks also to Steve Ryan with Rebecca Creek Distillery for graciously donating their premium whiskey and vodka.

DSC Conservation Society appreciates all of the silent auction donors for submitting top-notch items including scopes, a Chama chair, cigar sets, Texas Ranger package and multiple gift certificates.

To learn more about DSC Conservation Society, join the group for an event to be announced, slated for July 18, or contact the DSC office, (972) 980-9800, [email protected]. CT
