What was that hymn we sang last Sunday?
Am I supposed to bring snacks tomorrow?
When is my committee meeting? I wonder what the readings are for worship this week...
How can I connect with my church family?
I need to get more involved...but how?
I wish I knew how to tell my friends about my church.
Where do I fit in?
www.fpcsalina.org d e e p l y r o o t e d i n f a i t h , c h o o s i n g t o l i v e i n h o p e .
How does my church help those in need?
What are my kids learning this week?
I need a daily devotion...
What have you been wondering? The answer may be @ FPC’s new website. It’s the same address, but with a different look.

Two hundred and twelve pew Bibles were dedicated Sunday, November 8, and were given to the glory of God and in memory of Pat Knox by her family and me-morial gifts. Pat was a member of First Presbyterian Church for thirty four years. She served graciously and thoughtfully as an Elder, a Deacon and as one of three original directors of the Stephen Ministry program. These are just a few of the many ways she contributed to the life and ministry of this congregation. Thanks be to God for Pat Knox!
Thank you to Jerry Exline, Joy Mansfield, Ivy Marsh, Rita Peterson, Bill Siebert, Heather Smith, and Lisa Speer, who assisted the church staff with getting the new pew Bibles ready for dedication.
FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
The Advent Season is a time of preparation, anticipation, and reflection during the 4 Sundays, and 22 days, prior to Christmas. During Advent: Jeremiah declares God is doing a new thing, John the Baptist calls for repentance, dour Zephaniah rejoices, and a faithful Mary ponders. But what about you?
Three suggestions: 1. Observe Advent. Don’t do Christmas yet! Deeply root yourself in the progression of the Advent
story. “Act” Christmas if you must, but in your heart and mind, “do” Advent. 2. Choose Hope. Everyday. Let the Spirit work in you, choosing hope everyday, don’t just live in the mood of the moment. 3. Commit to Daily Devotion. Go to the FPC website (www.fpcsalina.org), click “resources” then click “devotions.” It will be helpful - you can do it!
Deeply root yourself in faith for Advent - 4 Sundays and 22 days - God is there; choose to live in hope!
Deeply Rooted in Faith, Choosing to Live in Hope: First Presbyterian’s Vision Statement and a perfect way to “do” Advent! by Tom Reid

CVG is now VAP! A special thank you to the Church Visioning Group (CVG) members Randy Hardy, Melinda Jett, Pat Putzier, Martha Rhea, Sydney Soderberg and staff Tom Reid, Becky Ewing and Sally Sutherland. This group met 25 times over the past 14 months and created a Mission and Vision Statement that was approved by Session in August of 2009. Now the baton is being passed! Eight church members were asked, and eight accepted, to form the Vision Action and Planning com-mittee (VAP). Those members are: Jo Bu-chanan, Andy England, Tom Gates, Randy Graham, Jeff Holgerson, Ann Jett, Jennifer Peckham, Linda Salem, with staff Tom Reid and Andy Davis. They are being charged with crafting a plan to help FPC (and you) live out our new mis-sion statement. Thank you!

Dinners for Eight Starting in February The Parish Life Committee invites members and friends of the congregation to participate in the fellowship called FPC Dinners for Eight. Groups of adults gather to share food and fellowship for two or three sessions. This spring, groups will meet in February, March and April. The FPC Dinners for Eight are open to ALL adults - singles and couples. The goal of this program is to form new friendships, get better acquainted with others in our church family and to enjoy a delicious meal. While most groups prefer to meet in individual homes, it is always an option to eat out together for one or more sessions. Please fill out the form below and return it to the church, or email your information to [email protected], by Friday, January 8, 2010. The Parish Life Committee will then organize the groups and your convener will contact you about your first meeting.

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Legacy Society (as of November 15, 2009)
The Legacy Society is a program the Endowment Fund Trustees have established to recognize members of the congregation – during their lifetime – who have made provisions in their estate plans to make a financial contribution to the Endowment Fund, even though the gift in most instances will not be received until after their death.
If you have already provided for the Church in your estate plan, please let us know so that we may include you as one of the members in the Legacy Society. If you have not already done so, but would like some information about how you might go about doing so, please don’t hesitate to contact Tom Reid or one of the Endowment Fund Trustees.

Grace & Gratitude...(an update!) Thanks to the many members and friends of First Presbyterian Church for their support of the 2010 Steward-ship Campaign! The congregation was asked, during this difficult time, to increase their pledges by 10%, in order to recover lost income for 2010. Of the pledges received so far, 125 reflect increases! What a generous response! The close of this year’s campaign will be celebrated during worship this Sunday, November 22, where we will show our gratitude for God’s grace. If you have not yet returned your pledge card, it is not too late! Contact Sally in the church office, 825-0226, if you have misplaced your card or have questions.

The purpose of the Endowment Fund is as follows:
“God calls us not to bury our talents in the sand, but to let our light shine, to become beacons of hope, to be leaven enriching the community; the gift of the Endowment Fund enables us to be active and faithful on this daring adventure to which God calls us.”
Gifts given to the Endowment Fund in the form of memorials, bequests, charitable remainder trusts and personal contributions as of October 31, 2009:
Romans in Ten Weeks Paul's letter to the Romans is the pinnacle of his writing. His letter is at times passionate, at other times involved, but always relevant to Christian life today. It is foundational to Presbyterian theology. The half-hour Bible study begins at 11:30 am following worship and runs every Sunday through Decem-ber 13 (except for Sunday, November 29 for the Thanksgiving weekend). We will meet in the First Floor Conference Room, the nursery will be available. If you need a book, please contact Associate Pastor, Andy Davis.
"For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God." Romans 8:14
Faith Matters by Andy Davis Our Session recently approved a new vision state-ment for this congregation. Faith Matters contin-ues to take a careful look at this statement, section by section.
Sunday, November 22: LOVE - Melinda Jett We believe we are called to be in relationship with each other. We will come to worship not just for ourselves, but also for others. We are a community, based on faith, and we need each other.
(no classes on Sunday, November 29)
Sunday, December 6: SERVE - Pat Putzier We believe we are called to grow in our commitment to justice, compassion and love, Jesus came to serve, not to be served. In the same way, we will look outward, not always expecting our needs to be met, but to learn more about the needs of others and offer help and hope to the world.
Friday December 11: Jesus Unboxed at the Hospital with Rev. Harry Tysen Meet downstairs in Conference Room #6, near the cafeteria, for a discussion about Rev. Tysen’s work as a chaplain. You may purchase lunch from the hospital cafeteria. Sunday December 13: PASS (Parents Against Sports on Sundays) with Robert Justus It’s difficult for parents to decide between sports and church on Sunday morning. This class will be an open minded discussion about these choices, and about what we can do as parents and as a church.
Sunday December 21: Christmas Trivial Pursuits! The annual tradition continues! Come and have fun!

Items desperately needed to help those struggling this Advent Season are: canned goods, can openers, hand soap, shampoo,
deodorant, diapers, toilet paper, toothpaste, toothbrushes and monetary donations
Each Sunday in Advent, beginning November 29, members may take their gifts to the designated area at the front of the church and/or purchase donation honor cards in the parlor.
Here are some things to know:
Gifts should be wrapped in white tissue paper, or with a white ribbon, to honor the “White gifts” tradition Volunteers will be in the parlor before and after worship to wrap gifts if needed If you would like to make a monetary donation, you may do so in the parlor. Honor cards will be available
for gift giving. The church’s monetary goal is $5,000.00, the same amount raised for other charities in years past.
Be intentional this Advent season, bring hope to someone’s life, give a white gift!
A Presbyterian tradition for almost 70 years, the Christmas Joy Offering is one of the four special offerings designated by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) to provide congregations direct ways of supporting specific causes that help those in need.
50 percent of the receipts to the Christmas Joy Offering are distributed to the Board of Pensions for assis-tance programs that provide support to retired and active church workers and their spouses and families. The other fifty percent supports Presbyterian-related racial ethnic education through the General Assembly Council.
Give generously to the Christmas Joy Offering! Offering envelopes are available in the pew racks beginning
Sunday, November 29, or in the church office.
In celebration of First Presbyterian Church’s 150th birthday, we will revisit the 1940’s tradi-tion of giving “white gifts” as a part of this year’s Intentional Christmas. Canned goods and other supplies were wrapped in white tissue paper, brought to the front of the sanctuary on Christmas Eve and then given to local charities. This year “white gifts” will be collected for the Emergency Aid Food Bank through Advent (November 29-December 24) and because of great need, will be distributed as they are collected.
