2 RUNNING ZONE THE STARTING LINE

DON & DENISE’S DEN

New Running Zone products debut to best serve the running communityAs running continues to increase in popular-ity across the Space Coast we at Running Zone continue to find new ways to stay abreast of our favorite sport.

To that end we will be introducing several new and expanded ways to keep everyone connected.

n We will be launching a new, re-designed and deeper Running Zone website. Look for the new site in April.

n We will be debuting a blog on the website to post the latest news and keep everyone informed on new and/or upcoming events, new products, new trends and anything pertaining to running that catches our eye. The blog debuts in April.

n We will be changing the publication cycle of The Starting Line newsletter from monthly to quarterly. We will take advantage of the blog to post news in a more-timely manner and at the same time use the quarterly cycle to expand the newsletter’s offerings.

The April newsletter, which you are reading now, is the final one in the monthly publishing cycle. The quarterly edition debuts in July.

Rest assured between now and the debut of the new products we will be discussing, dissecting and determining what we believe will best serve the running community.

To that end we welcome input from the people who matter the most, the runners, walkers and triathletes who are our customers and our friends.

Please feel free to say hello at the next event, drop by the store, call us at 321-751-8890 or drop us a line from www.runningzone.com/sitecontact

Melbourne’s Kaitlin Donner is an inter-national triathlon champion. Donner, a candidate for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Triathlon team and a Team Running

Zone member in her spare time, won the 2015 New Plymouth ITU Triathlon World Cup race in New Zealand in 1 hour and 18 seconds on March 15. She beat Team USA team-

mate Renee Tomlin by one second to claim the Elite Women crown for her first victory on the international stage. The race consisted of a 750-meter swim in very rough conditions, a 20K bike and 5K run in driving rain and cold temperatures. The choppy ocean didn’t daunt Donner. “Being from our area in Florida, I have grown up in and around the ocean so I am very comfortable in the water which is half the battle,” she said. “I did an open water 1K swim race in Australia where the water was very rough so had some confidence in that.” Also, she relied on her training. “I think the training time I spent in Cl-

ermont before coming overseas, my attention to detail, visualization and strength played a huge part in this race,” she said. “I have been working a lot on the mental aspect of racing through a lot of visualization and self talk, I practice it during workouts, es-

pecially the tough ones, so it comes naturally during races.” And while the victory is important and obviously special for Donner, it also is part of the bigger picture.Donner continues her busy schedule with the April 11 Gold Coast WTS race in Australia and races in Japan and London in May. “It’s still a big work in progress,” Don-ner said. “I don’t think it has still sunk in yet. It sets me up well in terms of points and being able to get a start in the races I want, but with ITU racing you have to stay on your game and anything can happen. “So I have actually decided not to race Cape Town, South Africa and will come home right after Gold Coast then likely head over to Yokohama/London again a few weeks later. It’s a very fine balance of doing enough work to stay fresh, while not doing too much to feel flat while getting over jet lag since we are 15 hours ahead here.” Donner was 10th in Abu Dhabi to start the 2015 season. Her last podium finish was in the 2014 Tiszaujvaros ITU Triathlon World Cup where she placed third.

6 RUNNING ZONE THE STARTING LINE

Why I Run: Tammy CastagnaroBy Mark DeCotis

Tammy Castagnaro is the proud mother of three boys: Devin, Joey and Anthony. She lives in Satellite Beach and is the Clinical Supervisor at Live Longer Medical Practice in Indialantic. Why I Run: I love my family, my job, and I certainly love running. In addition to running, I have a true passion for all types of exer-cise. I enjoy weight lifting, Cross Fit train-ing, surfing, I'm an active triathlete and I'm proud to say I completed my first marathon this past November. I started running as a result of my middle son, Joey, starting to run competi-tively in eight grade. It was my chance to stay connected with him and have a common pas-sion and additional bond - and what a passion it has become. The primary reason I have continued with my running passion is that still to this day, each time I set out for a run I truly feel the presence of my son who is continuing his education at FSU where he was a member of the cross country and track teams. It truly provides me with such a genuinely soothing emotional state and feeling that it has become an integral part of my life. In addition to this continued connection with Joey, and for the obvious health benefits that any life long sport provides, the friend-

ships that I have developed and nurtured through the years are absolutely priceless.

When I Run and Why: Most of my run-ning is done with a group of women three times a week, which allows us the ability to talk and share what's been happening in our

lives form week to week. With the pace this world demands, our running allows us to stay connected and enjoy each other's company each week.Where I Run and Why: I'm so fortunate to live beachside which enables me to run the causeways, river runs along South Tropical, and my absolute favorite running the beach at low tide. Anywhere I can run where the water is in sight is perfect for me. Worst Running Experience I Learned the Most From: Ironically my worst run-ning experience became my most valuable running lesson. Last spring while on a run over the Melbourne Causeway, I experienced calf cramping of a lifetime. For all of us who have encountered this painful condition, you know exactly how debilitating this can be. From this I learned that proper hydration is not solely about consuming enough fluids a few days leading up to a race. A proper hydration program is so incredibly impor-tant. Its not a once in a while thing, its an all the time thing. Finally, I would be terribly remiss if I didn't thank the experts at The Running Zone. The help, support and guidance they have provided over the years has been invaluable.

MEET JENI RITTERThis past month we welcomed a new face to the Running Zone Race Management Team. Jeni Ritter joined us as the new Race Coordinator for RZ as we have to bid a farewell to Corie Odden. Corie has been with Running Zone for close to two years and quickly established herself as the go-to-girl for the Race Directors! Corie and her family are leaving us for North Carolina where we anticipate she will be just as resourceful and helpful! Jeni Ritter will be the point of contact for all new and established races that Running Zone times and helps manage. She is from Co-lumbus, Ohio, attended Ashland University, The Ohio State University and Florida International University and in recent years was the Swim Coach at Florida Tech. Good luck to Corie, and welcome Jeni to the early mornings and race management life! Jeni and Corie getting down to business at the FLORIDA TODAY Corporate 5K.

8 RUNNING ZONE THE STARTING LINE

Emily truly suffered from depression. At 45, she was overweight, divorced, under-em-ployed, and her self-esteem was non-existent. Six months of treatment with numerous anti-depressant medications did nothing more than make her sleepy. And the weekly counseling session with the psychologist seemed like a waste of time. One day, while in the doctor’s waiting room, Emily noticed a beautiful, well-dressed 30-year-old woman, Karen. Emily struck up a conversation with Karen and discovered that, although she was wealthy, gorgeous, happily married, a mother of two beautiful daughters, a prominent professional, and she also was being treated for severe depression. And, like Emily, she was not responding very well. Emily thought to herself, “How can she be depressed? She has everything going for her.” The two women exchanged phone numbers and kept in touch. Shortly thereaf-ter, Emily read an article about running and depression. She decided to try running. She read up on shoes, stretches, and training. After a few short runs with her teenage son, she was hooked. After a short while, she felt great. Her weight dropped, she had more en-ergy, and her self-esteem soared. She began to get attention from males. In less than a year, she had discontinued all treatment, got a better job, and was leading a very happy life. She told Karen about running and she started doing it too. Her symptoms are decreasing as well. Depression is a complex, multi-faceted disorder, which is incompletely understood by medical science. It involves an imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain, but also has psychological components. It affects every part of a person’s life, including overall physi-cal health. It is characterized by sadness, malaise, guilt, fatigue, and irritability, and can lead to insomnia, eating disorders, and even suicidal ideation. It is not caused solely by external conditions of one’s life. This is why someone, such as Karen, who “has no reason to be depressed” was. Depression can affect anybody, anywhere, regardless of income, gender, age, etc. In fact, according to the Na-tional Institute of Mental Health, depression is the leading cause of disability in people between the ages of 15 to 44. The good news is that exercise, especial-

ly running, has been shown to decrease de-pression. It is not necessarily a substitute for other treatment, but it does have a place. A met-analysis (review study of data compiled from many articles) of studies of exercise and depression was recently done and identified 39 studies involving 2,326 patients. Exercise was found to be equally as effective as phar-macological or psychological treatment. How does exercise help to fight depres-sion? Although not completely understood, it appears that two biochemical events are responsible. First, exercise causes release of several chemicals that ease depression, notably endorphins, which are the body’s natural painkillers. Secondly, a recent Swed-ish study identified the role of a chemical called kynurenine, which is produced in the liver in response to stress. This chemical can travel to the brain and aggravate depression. Exercise causes muscles to release an enzyme that converts harmful kynurenine to harm-less kynurenic acid, which cannot get into the brain. In addition to these biochemical im-provements of depression in runners, several other benefits occur. Running reduces im-mune system chemicals that worsen depres-

sion. Running increases body temperature, which has a calming effect on the body. Running improves sleep, and reduces stress and anxiety. It reduces body fat, improv-ing physical appearance and self-esteem. It increases energy levels. It strengthens bones and muscles. It strengthens the heart and lowers blood pressure. It can promote social interaction. Finally, it boosts self-confidence. The benefits of running in improving mood and combatting depression are well established. Furthermore, these positives ef-fects are realized rather quickly. A study from the University of Texas found that depressive symptoms decreased 50 percent after only 12 weeks of exercise. In summary, it is clear that running can reduce the effects of depression. As we all know, runners are healthier and happier. Dr. Wilson, a Melbourne native and Florida Gator, earned his doctorate degree from the Illinois College of podiatric Medicine in Chicago. After completing a surgical residence in Chicago, Dr. Wilson returned to Melbourne where he has been practicing with Melbourne Podiatry Associates for 30 years. The good doctor is passionate about his profession; run-ning – a sport in which he has reveled for more than 45 years – and writing, particularly about all things running and foot related.

Running & DepressionBy Richard C. Wilson, DPM Melbourne Podiatry Associates

The good news is that exercise, especially running, has been shown to decrease depression. It is not necessarily a substitute for other treatment, but it does have a place.
