September already! As I’m writing this it’s the last week of the school holidays and I’mwondering where the summer went. I think it must be time for comfort food! Do you have afavourite Fat Rascal recipe or will you try one out for us? We’re holding a Battle of the FatRascals on 28th September, and are looking for bakers to take part in the fun and help usraise money for charity too.

This month we’re launching a survey to find out what you want from HASSRA Leeds. It shouldonly take a few minutes to complete and will help us decide what to focus our efforts on.What do you think? Should we organise more trips and events, set up more local clubs forspecific activities, or do something else? Click here to tell us what you think or copy this URLinto your browser https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/KNFG725. We’ve designed thequestions so it’s quick and easy to fill in on a smart phone, tablet or desktop. One luckyperson will receive £30 just for taking part. Other news this month:

- Well done to Anne Swaine, the lucky winner of our anagram competition. We were delightedthat 51 people entered

- Find out about our choir’s involvement in the next Gareth Malone TV show and read aboutone of its member’s experience at choir school

- Read about how our Angling Club has made nearly £26,000 for the Nick Clark memorial fundover the past four years

- If you’re around on 25th September, please come along to our Macmillan Coffee morningfrom 10:00 in room GC07 (baking welcome!)

We’re short of reviews of books, films, places and activities and would really love your input. Please email us at [email protected] if you have anything to share.

QuarryHouse Choir

In last month’s newsletter I was tellingyou about the journey the Quarry House choir hadbeen on since we started two years ago. I gave you ahint about the TV programme we auditioned for, sohere is the full story….We’d had the advert for Gareth Malone’s new TVprogramme entitled “The Naked Choir”, from a fewsources. Now I must admit I was a little concerned atwhat this might entail, anyway on reading the fullinformation pack that came I saw it was the workingtitle with a play on words as it was a competitionabout unaccompanied, stripped back singing. We all thought it was worth having a go and I sent offthe application form with a video of us singing one ofour South African songs. We sat back and waited……The TV Company that the BBC had contracted to dothe programme rang me within a week asking to havea telephone interview with me. They asked about thechoir’s members, how long we’d been going, whatwe sang etc all the usual stuff I was expecting and Itold them we’d started up because of GarethMalone’s first programme about work-based choirs, they liked that bit! They then wanted to know aboutme (ahh now I’m thinking I’d better be a bit guardedin my answers), what singing meant to me, what mygreatest achievement was (singing or otherwise), hadit ever got me through a difficult time, what sort ofcharacters did we have in the choir, (I could see theywere working out the backstory to the choirmembers). The interview went on for 40 minutes andthey asked to speak to another choir member or two,so I suggested Stephanie Howe and Sam Leigh bothof whom I knew had lots to give in this sort of interview. They both reported back to me after their interviewsthat they too had lasted nearly an hour each andthey’d given lots of information about themselves, their interests and their thoughts about being in thechoir.

I was contacted late Sunday evening from the TVCompany to say that out of thousands of entries wewere one of 120 choirs who’d been invited to attendthe filmed auditions. We had just over a week until wehad to go to Newcastle and would have theinformation one week in advance – to prepare oursong.

I received the next lot of information and song list 7days before the audition. We had to choose out of alist of 12 songs (none of which we’d sang as a choir)and had to sing a verse and a chorus only and thenthe whole choir was to be interviewed on camera, with both aspects together being considered byGareth.

There was lots of information about the programmeand what they were looking for: they wanted diversityof musical styles, ethnicity, ages, backgrounds, characters, geographical representation. Our musical director set to and arranged a piece ofmusic for us from Coldplay called “Fix You” so within aday and a half we had our first rehearsal and a furtherthree rehearsals before we hopped on the coach toNewcastle.

Lights……. Cameras… … Sing!

QuarryHouse Choir

In preparation for thechoir interview we did a paragraphabout ourselves, interesting facts, musicalexperience etc so we swotted up on the journey andwhat an interestingbunch we are!

We arrived early and at one point I was mistaken for theTV company rep! We filled in the contracts and signedup to “not telling anyone anything about the processso it didn’t jeopardise the programme”.We warmed up our voices on the riverside, in the lovelysunshine and sang to the hotel staff having a cigarettebreak. We then got called in to the audition.

The room we had been relaxing in earlier had now beentransformed into a studio with strong lights and twocameras and it all got very serious. The directorexplained what would happen and then it was Lights..Camera… Sing! We did a great interpretation of thesong and the TV director said it gave her “goosebumps”.We were then ushered into another room with morecameras and another TV director and a couple ofassistants taking notes. The choir was interviewed as agroup with Stephanie, Sam and me being singled outto begin with, to elaborate a bit more on some aspectsof our interviews then he opened it up to the wider choir. The choir chipped in with their views, experiences, howthe choir makes them feel, gigs we’d done and a fewlight-hearted comments. The director asked how we’ddeal with publicity, particularly as we were mostly civilservants. He said that a previous choir programme hadreceived media interest with a group from CityBank. We handled that very professionally and added thatwe’d had approval and encouragement fromPermanent Secretaries of Health and Work andPensions. He wrapped up the interview after 50 minutesas the next group (an all-girl barber shop group) weredue in.

We had a lovely reflective journey home, thinking of allthe things we’d talked about and how well the songhad gone and also what interesting things we’d learnedabout our choir friends.

We then waited for the auditions to finish and for the TVCompany and Gareth to review the footage.

On the day I was due to go on holiday I heard from theTV Company. I held my breath as I read through the firstparagraph and then exhaled as I read we “had notbeen one of the final 8 invited to be a part of theprogramme”. I was really disappointed as it would havebeen a wonderful experience, I was also relieved as itwould have put us in the spot light and those TVprogrammes love the clever editing to make theprogramme more watchable!

They have kept my details in-case another opportunityarises and it’s great for the choir’s CV! We are nowwaiting for the programme to air this autumn and I’mkeen to see if the barbershop group got through (wellthey couldn’t have two groups from Yorkshire).

We hope to sing Fix You in its entirety at ournext performance in Quarry House in the

autumn, so do look out for us or catch us atCivil Service Live in Newcastle on

Thursday 10 September.

If you think the choir is for you, come to ourtaster session on

Nick Clark Memorial Fishing Match04th July 2015 at Lindholme Lakes.

This year’s event was probably the most organisedof all. Our aim was to reach a rolling total over the4 years to £25,000, we needed to pull out all thestops and exceed the previous year’s results.Therewere some incredible sponsor donations, onefisherman exceeding £1500, several over £100.

Our side events, the raffle, auction, tombola, cakesales and barbeque were a great success and Iam pleased to report several prizes were won byYorkshire Benefits Centre staff. The Leeds Rhino’ssigned shirt was won by a supporter who bought30 names and his investment paid off when he waspresented with his prize.

The fishing match itself was a great success. Everyone enjoyed it with the usual banter andgood humour. The winner was presented with an excellent match rod donated by SupremeAngling and our top sponsor raiser also received one to recognise his outstanding achievement.

Following the presentations, the raffle was drawnand the auction held. We had invested £37 in ourauction items, the rest were donations and raisedover £600. We continued celebrating into the earlyhours of Sunday morning resulting in somemammoth hangovers!

Our total raised for The Nick ClarkMemorial Match 2015 was £8,177 which took ourrunning total raised to £25, 997 including gift aid.

This was an incredible result, which far exceeded previous year’s efforts and took us well overour target figure. (Our original target back in 2012 was £2,000!)

I would like to thank everyone who donated, baked, bought tickets and supported theYorkshire Cancer Centre Charity event. Your contribution will help support people and theirfamilies who experience this terrible illness. Every day we are one step nearer to making terminalcancer a thing of the past, so many more people are now surviving cancer and go on to livelife to the full, a gift you cannot put a price on.

I would also like to thank Michele Jowett (YBC) for dealing with the finances, Elaine Clay (YBC)for her prowess with the barbeque and keeping 55 fisherman satisfied! Heather Charlton (YBC)and husband Dave for driving from home to Leeds to Doncaster and back with their horseboxso we didn’t have to hire a van for the event helping us achieve maximum profit and YorkshireBenefits Centres for making us their nominated charity.

A special thank you to Hazel Reid(YBC) who fished her first evermatch and caught over 8llbs of fish,a great first result.

By popular demand it will be allback on again next year, maybewith some new ideas!!

Many thanks,

Rose.

Pedometer Challenge - October 2015

British Heart Foundation have approached the Wellbeing committee andasked that Quarry House be one of 15 workplaces across the UK to take

part in an online pedometer challengeOver 4 weeks in October teams of 10 employees wear pedometers andsupport each other through the challenge. Daily steps are recorded on

the online pedometer site. Leaderboards will help teams track theirprogress

Each member of staff who registers will get a pedometer and will receiveinformation by email through out the challenge. Guides will be sent tocaptains and online tracking for all participants is available to log steps

and see their progress. Once the challenge is completed eachparticipant will receive a certificate and the online leaderboard will show

who has won the challenge and how much money has been raisedBHF hope to raise funds for the charity so the Wellbeing committee

suggests a donation of £2.00 per person to take part but if anyone wantsto collect more money through sponsorship that is up to them.

Why not get your area of work to take part? Even if your team is basedremotely around different offices you could still join in. This is an easy wayto promote Wellbeing and team work amongst your colleagues for very

little effort.

Nominate a team captain and let the Wellbeing committee know assoon as possible. All information will be sent at this point

BOOKING TERMS AND CONDITIONSHASSRA TRIPS AND EVENTS

The following terms and conditions will apply to all events to ensure that every member has a fair opportunity toparticipate in events. The terms and conditions should be read in conjunction with the relevant booking form.

1. Wherever possible events will be advertised with a closing date for applications that is at least 4 weeks from the datefirst advertised, including proposed events where expressions of interest are being requested.

2. Persons wishing to travel together should complete one application form per room, submit their applications together, and determine a lead person who will be responsible for forwarding payments due and act as the contact on behalf of thegroup via a signed disclaimer agreeing to these terms and conditions.

3. A booking will not be accepted or entered in a draw without the correct deposit and signed disclaimer.

4. Once the closing date is reached, the number of applicants wishing to travel will be determined. Where there aresufficient places for all applicants, then deposit cheques will be banked and places confirmed.

5. Members should be aware that once deposit cheques have been banked they are not returnable and travellers will beliable to pay full price of the trip (unless the place is subsequently filled). Full price means the undiscounted "nonmember" price. Where necessary, HASSRA (Leeds) will provide an invoice for the full price for insurance purposes buttravellers need to be aware that the cost of insurance, (if purchased), is non-refundable.

6. Travel operators will be asked to date insurance cover from the date on which they receive notification of the personstravelling. It is therefore essential to obtain adequate travel insurance before booking if you do not purchase theinsurance offered.

7. Single supplements. There will be no member discount on supplements for travellers wishing to secure a singleroom. Where members indicate on the application form that they are willing to share a room with someone of the samesex, the organiser will arrange for pairing. If an individual has indicated that they are willing to share, they will not have topay a single supplement even if no pair is available.

8. Where the number of applicants exceeds the places available, a random draw of application forms will determinethose successful in receiving a place, subject to Clause 8. Cheques accompanying these applications will then beprocessed. Remaining applications will continue to be drawn at random to determine the order of the reserve list.

9. The trip organiser will be granted up to two places on that trip without entry into the ballot. An organiser is the personwho arranges the trip on behalf of the HASSRA Events Committee, whether or not s/he is a member of the Committee.

10. Where expressions of interest have been sought for a proposed trip, if that trip is subsequently confirmed, applications received from those expressing interest prior to the closing date will be given priority to book before anyunfilled places on the trip are advertised. On these occasions, once the closing date is reached, remaining places will befilled on a first come first served basis.

11. Members who have been unsuccessful in a ballot for a trip may record this on their application for the next trip, to thesame destination, and will be given priority for available spaces.

12. Applications from solely non-member groups, i.e. not accompanying a full HASSRA member, wishing to participate inan event will be considered only in the event of places remaining after the closing date has passed.

13. The priority order will be: a) Organiser +1, b) Previously unsuccessful on similar trip (ballot if necessary), c) Priorregistered interest (ballot if necessary), d) Other Members, e) Non Member groups.

14. Non-members may apply to travel at the discounted rate on an event provided that they satisfy the criterion forassociate membership and send a completed application for membership together with the appropriate payment, on orbefore the closing date for the trip. Associate Membership will last for 12 months from the date of processing theapplication. The Committee reserves the right to determine specific criteria for prior membership on certain trips. Anysuch requirements will be notified in the advertisement. Participants are reminded to conduct themselves in anappropriate manner while attending HASSRA sponsored trips and events. Formal complaints may prejudice anindividual's eligibility for future trips.
