July 1st thru Sept 24!Head up to Crystal River on the west coast, hire a guide and have a fantastic trip! This year

we rented a house on a canal from VBRO instead of staying in a hotel. Our two bedroom

home is newly renovated, includes everything except food. Bikes, kayaks, gas grill, linens....a

great spot to have a family vacation.

If you have your own boat and know the Gulf, you can easily head out on your own, but we

again called Riverventures and booked our morning scalloping trip. Our captain’s name was

Sean last time and he will be our captain again. He knows the bay, where to go for the scal-

lops & gave us tips on how to catch the precious bounty! 5 miles out into the Gulf the water

was flat like a mirror, the water was only 5’- 6’ deep & warm! This time we will head back

to our vacation home with our scallops & spend some time going “yuck” cleaning them and

have a special dinner and laugh about all the fun we had!

This year we are driving down to Homossassa/Weeki Wachee (30 min.) to rent

canoe’s/kayak’s to paddle/drift down the Weeki Wachi River. The Crystal River has so much

to offer, great funky restaurants like The Shed...and it’s so close to home! Make sure you book

all of your activities in the morning, since afternoon storms roll in like clockwork!!

When people think of mentoring, they often associate itwith an older executive who counsels a promising newbie.The senior leader advises the junior employee on his career,navigating office politics and what’s needed to get ahead. Butmentoring has dramatically changed over the last fewdecades.

Maybe you find yourself stuck in a career rut or itching tobroaden your skills and take on new challenges. Perhapsyou’re eyeing a higher-level management role or other profes-sional advancement. If you wait for senior managers to noticeyou and “bring you along,” you’ll be disappointed with thewait — assuming a promotion ever happens.

Effective mentoring is essential for leadership development.Done right, it’s one of the most powerful tools for gainingwisdom, reaping the rewards of job growth and achieving astrong competitive advantage in today’s job marketplace.

Successful leaders mentor, coach and partner with theiremployees instead of practicing command-and-control man-agement. Top organizations are more adaptive, innovative andsmart about bringing out the best in their people. Employeesare always learning, and managers are always teaching.Thatsaid, it’s up to you to cultivate a beneficial mentoring relation-ship — and to pursue it with rigor and commitment.

In “Demystifying Mentoring,” a February 2011 HarvardBusiness Review blog post, Contributing Editor Amy Galloidentifies four common mentoring myths:

Myth #1: Mentoring is a formal long-term relationship.Because the business world moves fast and people frequentlychange jobs, a long-term advisory relationship may be unreal-istic. Mentoring can be a 1-hour session; it needn’t be an offi-cial 6-month assignment.

Instead of focusing on the long term, think of mentoring as atool you can access when you need it. Of course, advice andguidance may be more relevant if they come from someonewho knows you and understands your goals. But you still needto build relationships so you have connections in place whenyou require advice. In some instances, you may wish to con-sult people who don’t know you as well, but can offer a freshperspective.

Myth #2: You have to find one perfect mentor. It’s actual-ly quite rare these days for people to get through their careerswith only one mentor. In fact, many people have severalesteemed advisers. Seeking a variety of perspectives on a cru-cial issue may be warranted.

Myth #3: Mentoring is just for junior-level employees.Many people assume they need a mentor only when startingtheir careers. In reality, professionals at every developmentalstage can benefit from a mentoring relationship. You may besurprised to find that reverse mentoring often occurs (a seniormanager, for example, learns technology skills from a junioremployee).

Don’t wait for problems to occur to find a mentor. Whetheryou are making a career change, taking on a new role or con-templating leaving a job, solicit advice from someone who hasexperienced a similar transition.

Myth #4: Experienced professionals mentor out of thegoodness of their hearts. It can be an honor to be asked tomentor someone, but the relationship is about more thanrespect for a trailblazer. Mentoring should be useful to bothparties. Think about what you can offer a potential mentor:• Can you provide a unique perspective on his role in theorganization?

Mentoring Vs. Coaching

“Mentoring magic cannot be a solo performance. It is not aone-way, master-to-novice transaction. To be effective andlasting, it must be accomplished through a two-way relation-ship — the synchronized efforts of two people.” ~ Chip R.Bell and Marshall Goldsmith, Managers as Mentors, Berrett-Koehler Publishers, Third Edition, 2013

At its most basic level, mentoring is the simple act of help-ing someone learn. But the relationship between the helperand “helpee” changes significantly when performed as alearning partnership. Today’s competitive organizations need“learning entrepreneurs,” whose curiosity is valued over con-formity.

Words like “mentor” and “coach” are sometimes used inter-changeably, but there’s an important distinction:

• Coaching is specifically aimed at nurturing and sustainingperformance.

• Mentoring focuses on learning; its primary outcome shouldbe competence, proficiency, skill, know-how and/or wisdom.Coaching is practiced by managers who are responsible formeeting performance goals and by executive coaches who arehired to boost personnel development. Mentoring can be prac-ticed without the supervisory constraints imposed by the orga-nizational hierarchy.

While coaching and mentoring are similar, this article willassume that a mentoring partnership:

1. Exists between two people (usually one more experiencedthan the other)

2. Is dedicated to promoting self-directed learning and devel-opment.

What do we need to understand about mentoring, and how canthis relationship be most helpful? How do you know when it’sthe right time to find a mentor? What’s the best way to start amentoring relationship?

Mentoring Myths

In the last decade, the concept of mentoring has changed, butthe need for career counseling has not. In fact, mentoring ismore important than ever because most careers take numeroustwists and turns in a rapidly evolving world.

S = Surrendering. Power, authority and command (orthe protégé’s perception of these traits in a mentor) can doomthe dialogue necessary for learning.

A = Accepting. Strive for a safe relationship. The protégémust trust the mentor to provide an environment that encour-ages risk and experimentation.

G = Gifting. A mentor should supply advice, feedbackand/or focus. This stage is actually the most delicate. If thementor has failed to pave the way for Surrendering andAccepting, the protégé may ignore, undervalue, resist or rejectthe gift of knowledge.

E = Extending. A mentor must help the protégé applyinformation to real-life experiences so self-directed learningmay occur. Creative teaching tools include role-playing, feed-back and storytelling.

Quick Tips for Mentors and Protégés

The quality of your mentoring relationship will determine itsultimate success. Each partner must accept responsibility formaking it work. When something isn’t gelling, be sure tocommunicate your concerns. When expectations are met, letgo and move on. Bell and Goldsmith offer some fundamentaltips in Managers as Mentors:

Tips For Being a Great Protégé:

• Select a mentor who can help you be the best you can be, notthe one who can ease you into a promotion.

• You can sometimes learn more from people who are differ-ent from you.

• Clarify your goals and expectations for the mentoring rela-tionship, and communicate them in your first meeting.

• Be yourself. Be willing to take risks with new skills andideas.

• When given feedback, listen well and say thank you.

• Do you bring valuable outside information that can helpyour mentor in her job?

While not a direct barter, you may be able to offer yourprospective mentor a promise of future assistance.

Mentoring Do’s and Don’ts

Mentoring can take many forms, but your goal is to find theright kind of advice, from the right person, at the right time. Gallo offers the following guidelines in her Harvard BusinessReview article:

Do:• Build a cadre of people you can turn to for advice when youneed it.

• Nurture relationships with people whose perspectives yourespect.

• Think of mentoring as both a long and short-term arrange-ment.

Don’t:• Assume that your success or experience precludes your needfor a mentor.

• Rely on one person to help guide your career

• Expect to receive mentoring without providing anything inreturn.

“The most powerful yet difficult part of mentoring is beingwho you are,” write Bell and Goldsmith. “This is not to implythat a mentor must be some kind of super-hero without flaws,doubts or the capacity for making mistakes. Fundamentally,mentoring is about growing — mentors growing with pro-tégés, protégés growing with mentors.”

Encouraging Reciprocity. An effective mentoring relationshipcan be best described as a mutual search for wisdom. It’sgrounded in a true partnership that thrives on reciprocal facil-itation of learning. Such reciprocity requires the mentor tosurrender power differences to build rapport and trust.Learning cannot occur with fear in the room. Bell andGoldsmith encourage the “SAGE” approach to forming thefoundation for an effective mentorship:
