When we hear the term aliyah (literally "goingup"), we instinctively think of being called up to
the Torah or of settling in Israel (“going on aliyah”). Inits original biblical context, however, the term refers topilgrimages to Jerusalem. The Torah requires all malesto go up to Jerusalem "three times a year" to offer upsacrifices in the Temple on the threefestivals – Passover, Shavuot andSukkot (Ex. 23:17; 34:23; Deut.16:16).
The First Temple fell in 586B.C.E. The Second Temple, builtseventy years later, lasted until itsdestruction in 70 C.E. During theperiod of the Second Temple,“hundreds of thousands of pilgrimsfrom within Ereẓ Israel, as well asfrom the Diaspora, streamed to theTemple at each of the threefestivals” (Encyclopedia Judaica =EJ).
Indeed, the EJ article notes,“the pilgrimage affected the life ofevery Jew, who might have toprepare for the occasion, and the journey and theaccompanying sacrifices involved a not inconsiderablefinancial outlay. The inspiration derived from [thispilgrimage] remained a powerful stimulus to thepilgrim after his return.”
The same article notes other important benefits. The pilgrims gave Jerusalem an economic transfusion. The pilgrims came away with a tremendous sense ofnational pride and solidarity. The pilgrims wereexposed to the tremendous spiritual potential unleashedby the Jewish people living as a majority culture ontheir own land. Their sheer joy in being in Israel isexpressed vividly in Psalms 42, 84 and 122, which aresongs of the pilgrim companies. Women also took part,
the biblical passage "all thy males shall appear" beingunderstood merely as referring only to the duty of themen who alone were obliged to bring the obligatorysacrifices (Ant. 11:109; Luke 2:41–43).
These pilgrimages continued long after thedestruction of the Second Temple.
Christian pilgrimages to EreẓIsrael became an establishedinstitution from the 4th century onand have continued almostuninterruptedly to the present day.Once home, the pilgrim reported theglories of the holy places and thewonders he had seen & heard. Muchof the information available onJewish life in the Holy Land inearlier periods comes from theChristian pilgrim accounts. Indeed, there are some hints that Gentileenthusiasm for the Land of Israelrubbed off on Jews (cf. Psalm126:2-3).On the 5th of Iyar (April 15), the
State of Israel marks her 65thbirthday. There are many ways to participate in thecelebration - pro-Israel advocacy, purchase of IsraelBonds, planting trees in Israel, etc. – but none aspowerful as visiting Israel. Perhaps some of you havenot yet made the journey of a lifetime. Perhaps some ofyou have already done so, but not recently. In eithercase, Maxine and I would be honored to join with youin the Federation-sponsored Jersey Shore FamilyMission to Israel this summer (July 28 – August 8). Acopy of the itinerary and the FAQ (Frequently AskedQuestions) is available in the office in hard copy and onour website (www.sonsofisrael.com).
We look forward to an exciting trip with otherSons of Israel Pilgrims!

president’s messagepresident’s messageBy Michael Lebowitz
The Torah readings for the month of April are filledwith instructions about how to live, how to sanctify
life, and how to serve God. In Emor, the last Parasha weread this April, one of its messages is "timing iseverything," as HaShem proclaims "fixed times" fordevotion, starting with Shabbat on the 7th day, Pesach onthe 14th of evening Nissan...and so on. This idea of"fixed times" is something that we, by extension, adhereto today, both in religious observance and communityactivity. Thanks to these "fixed times" for celebration, fundraising and education, we have a great shul and aclose community.
Let's take a look back at some of our more recent"fixed times." Our very successful youth Havdalahservice on March 2 offered an opportunity to experiencethe beauty of the twilight time when Shabbat fades intothe next week. The next day, on March 3, MakhelatMaMercaz – the Jewish choir of Central Jersey presenteda beautiful musical concert featuring a solo by RabbiPilavin, and participation by Maxine.
Barbara Zagha's amazing March 6 Passovercooking class raised the bar once again with recipes thatreflect the spices and influences of Asia, theMediterranean, the Middle East and of course,Manhattan. The March 9 Comedy Night was a hugesuccess, co-sponsored by the Men's Club and Sisterhood– and the Sunday March 10th Men's Club Trenton Titanshockey game was fun as well.
The fact that Pesach's "fixed time" this yearspilled from the end of March into April made it seem tofly by even faster than ever. Looking forward, our YomHaShoah program on Monday April 8 will feature RabbiDr. Bernard Rosenberg, a vibrant, well known speaker -and a child of survivors - based in Highland Park, andone of the pioneering voices for Holocaust and GenocideEducation (http://bernhardrosenberg.com/Index.html).Hearing Rabbi Rosenberg is an incredible experience –don't miss it, and bring your teenagers and young adults.
On Tuesday April 9th, our "fixed time" for ourongoing 92nd Street Y program features the 100thanniversary of the ADL. On the next day, Wednesday,April 10, Bonnie Leff's Yiddish class is back by popular
demand; followed by a Sisterhood Zumba class onThursday April 11.
On Shabbat April 13, my family and I have fixeda time to remember my Mother, Ruth Lebowitz, with akiddush in her memory on her first Yahrzeit. On SundayApril 14th we will celebrate Israel Independence Daywith a screening of "Israel Inside: How a small nationmakes a big difference." More "fixed times?" An April21st Men's Club Sunday breakfast; a Wednesday April24th Sisterhood Book Chat.
I also want to congratulate Karen Terry and SteveWertheim on their upcoming wedding! "Fixed timing" isalso part of building a solid future.
If you didn't already know about them, check upon the Congregation Sons of Israel's Facebook andTwitter pages – these open a whole new world ofcommunication for us!
Our board members are excited about holding ournext board meeting at the Holocaust Memorial Museumat Brookdale Community College, and we thank MimiWerbler for the invitation. Also, we are looking forwardto our Annual Gala Testimonial Dinner on Sunday, May5, honoring long-time members, not to mention ex-presidents, Alan Kurlander and Jay Lillianthal. Theirservice to our Congregation is unparalleled, so pleasecome and celebrate with them in our Social Hall. Forinformation regarding tickets and Journal ads, pleasecontact the office.
Please attend Rabbi Pilavin's Learning at Levy'severy Wednesday at 10 am, and Maxine's class onMonday nights at 7:30. We also must keep in mind ourmorning and evening minyans. I am almost finishedsaying Kaddish as my year is almost up – but I will behere to support others reciting Kaddish, and hopeeveryone joins me. Also please consider sponsoring akiddush to celebrate all occasions - birthdays, anniversaries, bar mitzvahs, and other significant timesin your life.
Finally, while this is not a "fixed time", it is anhonorable mention. I am very proud of my daughterAshley for collecting $2,100 for Special Strides – she isthe #1 Fundraiser in her school!

2013 Sons of Israel Testimonial Dinner
Rabbi's Message A testimonial dinner is commonly understood as an entertaining event on the social calendar of an organization - usually with the explicit goal of raising funds for the organization. I have every confidence that the Testimonial Dinner of Congregation Sons of Israel will meet those conventional expectations. The program will be entertaining. It will be a social event second to none. It will be a very successful fundraiser for the synagogue. And yet, I believe that a Testimonial Dinner represents something else as well. The Dinner Committee, in selecting Alan Kurlander and Jay Lillianthal as its guests of honor, seems determined to acknowledge our historic debt to two very distinguished individuals. Both Alan and Jay have served two years as synagogue president during some of our congregation's most active years. And, it goes without saying, the presidency is not an "entry level" position. It is the culmination of many years of devoted service in numerous capacities. It is nothing short of remarkable that Alan and Jay were able to juggle their personal and professional obligations while tending to the needs of a very active "shul." More than twenty years after their terms of office have ended, Alan and Jay continue their involvement with our congregation. They still serve as our very youngest "elder statesmen." Their wives - Bonni Kurlander and Jan Lillianthal - deserve our highest praise for encouraging their husbands to become and remain active in Congregation Sons of Israel. Prayer, however, is more than just praise or thanks. It is also petition. And we end by addressing Alan and Jay in the words of the evening service: v'ahavatcha al tasir mimenu l'olamim - Never take away your love from us! Maxine joins me in offering congratulations to two outstanding honorees. In friendship, Rabbi Robert Pilavin

2013 Sons of Israel Testimonial Dinner
Alan Kurlander - Honoree Alan grew up in Manhattan Beach in Brooklyn, New York. He was raised in a traditional Jewish home and attended Yeshivah of Flatbush Elementary and High School in Brooklyn. Alan went on to the University of Miami in 1968. The fol -working nature and desire to leave an impact compelled him and his roommate to rent a vacant luncheonette during the infamous Woodstock festival. For one week on Route 17B in Bethel, NY, they sold food to countless attendees at Woodstock. In Alan's early 20's while residing in Brooklyn, Alan volunteered as a Big Brother for an at-risk child and also volunteered at Maimonides Mental Health Clinic in Brooklyn for the less fortunate. Then, in October 1972, Alan and Bonni were married, and soon after, they moved to Manalapan. Bonni is now a social worker on a Child Study Team in three elementary schools in Howell. They have three children. Their oldest, Dara, is an elementary school principal in New Jersey. Their son Keith is a psychotherapist, while their daughter-in-law Emma is a mental health counselor in Colorado. Lastly, their youngest daughter Lauren graduated from Cornell University in May 2012 and is currently working for a nonprofit service organization while applying to medical school. From 1972 until 2006, Alan owned, operated, and served as President of Hall of Fame Candies & Nuts, a Brooklyn based company supplying packaged candies and nuts to supermarkets, discount stores, and department stores. Since 2006, Alan has worked at Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Manalapan Township, N.J. distinction as a top producer who in 2012 was the number 1 Coldwell Banker agent for closed units in the entire state of New Jersey and ranks in the top 1% in sales of all Coldwell Banker agents worldwide. After moving to Manalapan, the Kurlander family immediately joined Congregation Sons of Israel synagogue. Alan served on the Board of Directors of Congregation Sons of Israel in various capacities culminating in President of the Congregation from 1990 -1992. During his tenure as President with the collaboration of many volunteers, Renée Narson was hired as nursery school director, Cantor Zvi Rozen was hired, and the synagogue acquired two new Torahs, but what Alan is most proud of is being part of the group that established a daily prayer minyan. Throughout the years, Alan also served on various search, nominating, and ad journal committees. Kurlander added th
Alan also served on the Men's Club Board bringing in notable guest speakers such as Dr. Michael Baden, basketball players Butch Beard and Willis Reed, and boxing champion Jose Torres. Alan has also been involved in fundraising activities in Congregation Sons of Israel as well as Manhattan Beach Jewish Center in Brooklyn. Over the years, Alan's hobbies included playing in softball, basketball, and racquetball leagues. Alan, a truly remarkable father, was very involved with his children's activities including soccer and baseball. His spirited nature can also be seen in his prior activity in a skeet shooting league, dirt biking, and motorcycle riding. He also loved taking his Porsche 930 Turbo to the track at Raceway Park. Throughout his life, Alan has deeply and utterly committed himself to each important person and occasion, both professionally and personally, and so we are the ones truly honored to be able to honor him at this special event.

Dear Congregant and Friend, The success of any organization or the quality of life of any community can be ascribed to the dedication of individuals, who through their commitment set the pace for others. We are fortunate in having such individuals in our midst, whom we will be honoring at Congregation Sons of Israel’s Testimonial Dinner on Sunday, May 5, 2013. Alan Kurlander and Jay Lillianthal, with their long records of service to the Congregation, are deserving of the accolades that will be accorded them at the gala Journal Dinner at Sons of Israel, 33 Gordons Corner Road in Manalapan. In conjunction with the Testimonial Dinner, we will be publishing a Tribute Journal, the proceeds of which will be used to expand our wide array of Congregational activities. Tzedakah (a charitable contribution) is central to our heritage and your generosity will help us to achieve our short and long-term goals. It is a fitting way to honor individuals who have devoted themselves to serving Sons of Israel. Below is an ad form for the Tribute Journal with many levels of donation. Your support honoring Alan and Jay’s work is greatly appreciated. We hope you will join us on May 5 at 4 PM to pay tribute to our honorees.
