Safety Buzz at GOSHBy Paul Schuberg

Another Oregon Governor’s Safety & Health Conference has come & gone, but as usual, another marvelous event we can all be proud of. Time to learn,

connect, re-connect and reminisce. My favorite reminisce at GOSH was with our good friend and colleague Bruce Poinsette at AGC. My first conference was in 1983 at the old Red Lion Lloyd Center where we had over populated the facility to the ire of the Fire Marshall and had to make accommodations with local facilities including the BPA to accommodate the eager crowd.

The chuckle that dates many of us was at the time, OR-OSHA was known as the Accident Prevention Division, with that bold “APD” inscription on the back of those jackets. It could be a little intimidating if your safety house wasn’t in order, and those workers weren’t tied off. Today, the Conference co-sponsor w/ASSE, Oregon OSHA, can also be proud of their efforts and employers they work and have worked with, to have ushered in the modern era of safety and health in our state. This years’ conference was a reflection of how far we’ve all traveled in this journey to keep workers safe and healthy.

Safety buzz words and clichés have always been a part of our world from the ancient and pervasive, “Safety is no accident” to what is proudly painted at our facility with a compass that says, “Safety all ways”. Some “magic’ words I wrote down from this year’s GOSH speakers, for your consideration:

• “See Something, Say Something, Do Something”• “Energize and Engage”• “Retire the Tired” ( Programs that cease to bring value- not people, or most of us would

disappear at some point)This year’s GOSH had plenty of information to choose from as options to what may be limiting our success. I’ll be looking forward to 2015 Conference for more ideas and stories from all of you, and the inspiration from those who organize, speak and participate in this great Oregon tradition.

“Safety, It’s a marathon, not a sprint”. Congratulations, GOSH.

Leslie Kantor featured in the Oregon OSHA newsletter

In addition to the recognition she received at the GOSH WISE event, Leslie was also featured in the February-March Oregon OSHA “Health & Safety Resource” newsletter. To read the article, go to: http://www.orosha.org/pdf/resource/2850-2013-02.pdf

Businesses invited to participate in Safety Break for Oregon May 811th annual event focuses on employee involvement(Salem) — Employers across Oregon are encouraged to promote safety and health in their workplace during Safety Break for Oregon on Wednesday, May 8, 2013. In past years, employers have hosted safety demonstrations, award recognition events, and training.

Oregon’s Occupational Safety and Health Division (Oregon OSHA) coordinates the one-day event, designed to raise awareness and promote the value of safety and health in preventing on-the-job injuries and illnesses. The voluntary event, which occurs on the second Wednesday in May, is flexible to meet an employer’s safety and health program needs.

“We invite employers to get creative and have fun while focusing on safety and health issues,” said Michael Wood, Oregon OSHA administrator. “This is an opportunity to celebrate safety achievements or start a conversation around improving on-the-job safety.”

Safety Break encourages employees and management to work together on identifying safety and health concerns. The result of this cooperation can lead to fewer injuries and reduced workers’ compensation costs for employers.

Companies planning to participate will be entered to win one of three $100 pizza luncheons when they sign up online by Friday, May 3. The prizes will be given to participating companies as part of a random drawing. The Oregon SHARP Alliance is sponsoring the contest.

For more information, ideas on how to host an event, or to download graphics, go the Safety Break for Oregon website at http://www.orosha.org/subjects/safetybreak.html

In March 2012, OSHA revised its Hazard Communication Standard to align with the United Nation’s Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) . Two significant changes contained in the revised standard require the use of new labeling elements and a standardized format for Safety Data Sheets (SDSs), formerly known as Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs). To help companies comply with the revised standard, OSHA is phasing in the specific requirements over several years. The first compliance item is employee training which must be completed by December 1, 2013.

Message froM the President • Luke Betts

Well the 33rd biennial Oregon Governor’s Occupational Safety and Health Conference (2013 GOSH) has come and gone. It was by all accounts a very

successful conference and much of that thanks can be to the many volunteers both inside of our chapter and out. I could not possibly ensure that I have thanked everyone who deserves a thank you for their many efforts. That is one of the reasons I asked Illa (Our Newsletter Editor) to include the thank you page from the GOSH program in this newsletter.

There are many people who did not make that list that also deserve thanks. There were many presenters, student section volunteers from both our Mt Hood Community College Student Section and the Central Washington University Student Section, chapter members who manned our booth, and in so many other ways. I sincerely want to thank all of you who participated or attended the conference in any way.

The success of the GOSH is a very big strength for our chapter and I am very thankful for the working relationship that we have with Oregon OSHA. Having attended regional meetings

and talked to other chapter presidents our relationship and partnership is very unique. I truly believe that this relationship is what makes the Oregon GOSH the best regional safety conference in the entire Northwest and one of the best in the United States.

There are a couple of people that I would like to single out (not that there are not many more I wish I had the space to do so). Having worked with Sharell Lien at Oregon OSHA for the past year and a half on this conference I can honestly say that a lot of what has been built has been with Sharell’s attention to detail, hard work, and direction. I really appreciated working with Sharell and everyone at Oregon OSHA who was at the conference.

I also need to single out our own Judy West. For those of you who don’t know Judy does so much work behind the scenes to make sure our events are a success. Judy ensured we received the booth kit from society, ran the booth schedule, easily had the most time at the booth, and secured give-away items for conference attendees from society. Judy also handled our booth for the Pulp and Paper conference earlier this year.

Coming on the heels of the conference will be our outreach to Tigard High School’s CE2 students through our OSHA 10 hour program. This year’s group will be our largest at the school with a predicted 39 attendees. One of the special success stories from last year was that one of the students received a raise and was put in charge of the safety committee weeks after starting because of her OSHA 10 card. She had the most safety training of anyone at her place of employment.

I do want to remind everyone that voting is ongoing for the chapter officers for 2013-14 year. Votes will be accepted until Friday, April 5th at 11:45PM. The voting link will close at that time.

For information on the candidates please open the previous Safety Emphasis Chapter Newsletter from March (candidate information begins on page 5): http://assecwc.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/March-SE-2013-Final.pdf

To vote please go to our online elections form: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/JZSBBVC

It’s hard to believe that the elections have already arrived. But as I stated in my opening article it would only be a short period of time before we were talking about the 2013-14 chapter year and here we are. I’m really excited about our slate of officers and look forward to seeing them bring their leadership to our chapter next year.
