President’s welcome

Hello and welcome to VPMA congress 2012.

After an exceptional year in 2011 we are back and keen to do it all

again! I am really looking forward to congress this year. We are hop-

ing to build on last year’s successes, from listening to the feedback

we received from members and other attendees. Once again we have

3 streams of lectures and exciting speakers – some that are flying in

from America just for us! We have Purple Cat Coaching back by pop-

ular demand and two whole streams dedicated to modern marketing

and retailing. This year’s CPD calendar is unbeatable.

The commercial exhibition is a big part of congress and its success and I would like to

thank in advance all of our exhibitors and sponsors for their support this year. Please make

every effort to visit our exhibitors and don’t forget to take part in the exhibition competi-

tion. There are some fab prizes up for grabs!

And I know only too well that one of the main reasons you all come to congress is for the

social aspect and the networking! Well, this year should not disappoint. We have some

fantastic events to help everyone to get to know each other and once again my favourite

band Blind Lemon is back for the banquet on Friday night. I expect to see you all up danc-

ing the night away!

I hope you thoroughly enjoy your weekend at congress.

Rebekka

13.15-13.30 Practice managers’ guide to the Professional Development Phase

All new graduates must complete the Professional Development Phase, but RCVS research sug-gests that those who do not receive adequate support from their employers don’t get as much out of it as they could. Using the PDP as part of a structured appraisal process can bring dividends to both practice and new graduates. Find out how.

Stream 3 Lecture overviews

Impact on PeopleAnne-Marie Svendsen Aylott, Purple Cat Coaching

IntroductionWorking in a practice – whether you are part of the ownership or employed – involves dealing with people. Clients, colleagues, direct reports, bosses – they are all there and they all come with unique personalities, quirks, hang-ups and lovely qualities. On a good day everything flows and everybody gets along – but in an environment that has so many people interacting, it is inevitable that someone might have a grumpy day, be stressed or just plain be struggling to make the day work for them. For VPMA 2012 we have designed 2 days of Impact on People.

How useful would it be to you if you had a better understanding of your own patterns of behav-iour and how you can use them to help people get along better? And how about spending some time understanding what makes people tick – and some blow up at the slightest excuse? Finally – would you like to be able to actually DO something about it? Get an idea of how you can manage the practice so the good days get even more frequent? Then these 2 days are for you.

ObjectivesThe objective of the 2 days of lectures are to move people from a state of frustration (low key or otherwise) around the people practice environment to a state where they

a) Understand how they can use their own strengths better, b) Understand that other people’s behaviour are driven by a variety of rules – even when it

doesn’t seem that way andc) Have lots of ideas and the beginning of a plan for what they can do about it.

Target audienceThe lectures will be suited for all levels of owners and employees within a practice environment. Anyone that deals with people will find something useful in these.

ContentThere will be 11 lectures – 6 on the first day and 5 on the second day. Each lecture will run over 45 minutes and include at least one interactive exercise to motivate people and get them thinking.

Additional lectures

The consumer journey - minor changes, major results -Verity Page, Novartis

The consumer and their pet have numerous touch points on their journey through a clinic which can influence their opinion of the vet and the practice hugely. We will break down these touch points through an interactive presentation to show what can and cannot be controlled and if addressed how some minor changes in these areas can deliver major results to the practice.

“NEST” – Compulsory Workplace Pensions. Let’s look at the facts.Steve Bee & David Hodgetts, PPS Group

From 2012 every UK Employer will be required by law to enrol all eligible employees into a pension scheme and pay in significant company contributions. So do you want to keep control of your costs and employee benefits, or rely on the Government who knows noth-ing about your business to do it for you through their own National Employee Savings Trust (NEST)?

Employee motivation and engagement (survey findings and analysis)Vanessa Wilson, Pfizer Vet Support+

Practices can be complex organisations. Leadership, visibility and integrity are critical to the effective management of highly educated teams and clarity of roles and purpose are essen-tial to the efficient running of a practice and can often make the difference between profit and loss to a small business. Measuring employee engagement can provide a broad and deep insight into the internal dynamics of your business, highlighting areas of focus that may not be visible when immersed in the day to day running of practice. During this session Vanessa Wilson will provide you with proprietary information on the largest veterinary practice en-gagement survey ever conducted in the UK.
