moving to your child’s classroom. Your child’s teacher will then share with you the programmes, routines and

Parent Teacher Conferences

We have scheduled Parent Teacher Conferences on the following dates:

Rose St site – Monday 4th March and Wednesday 6th March, 3.30 - 6.00 pm

Weld St site – Tuesday 5th March , 3.30 - 5.30 pm and 6.00 - 7.30 pm

These conferences are an opportunity for parents to meet individually with your child’s teacher for 10

minutes. The information shared at this conference is most helpful for the teacher as they begin to work with

your child this year. Student Information Sheets will be sent home on Thursday 21st February and the

purpose of these sheets is to provide a focus for your discussion as well as a written record of helpful

information to be shared with your child’s teacher. Could we please ask you to return the completed

questionnaire to your child’s teacher no later than Thursday 26th February so that teachers have the

opportunity to read each questionnaire before parent teacher conferences begin the following week. The

interview booking system will once again be done online at www.schoolinterviews.co.nz and bookings have

opened today and close on Thursday 26th February at 4.00pm. The booking code is: cmatg

Road Safety Update

Cathrine Wilkinson is our School Travel Plan Coordinator and is in charge of our road patrols at Wadestown

School this year. The patrols enable children to cross Mairangi Road and Rose Street safely and our road

patrollers do a great job with this added responsibility. Please support our road patrollers at the Rose St site

as they manage an important and sometimes difficult task.

We are thrilled with the Wellington City Council Initiative “Park and Stride” which the Council installed on

Mairangi Road at the beginning of this year. Park and Stride helps to make school drop off early and fun by

moving it a short distance from the Rose Street School gate. If you did not receive your “Park and Stride”

pamphlet sent with all Rose Street students please let us know and we will send one home with your child.

This pamphlet explains how Park and Stride operates at Wadestown School.

Page 4: WADESTOWN SCHOOL Community Newsletter...moving to your child’s classroom. Your child’s teacher will then share with you the programmes, routines and expectations for their class

“Kiss and Drop” at the Weld Street Site

Each morning a volunteer parent is on duty from 8.30am until 8.55 am assisting the children at the “Kiss and

Drop” zone. As cars drive down the hill and pause in the drop off box, the duty parent opens the door and

helps the child out so a quick goodbye can be said and they are able to come into school safely. With four

classrooms in operation at Weld St this year we would like as many parents as possible to use this service

please as it assists greatly to reduce the parking and congestion difficulties that parents and residents

experience in Weld St.

Wadestown School Orchestra

This wonderful initiative began several years ago under the guidance of Rupa Maitra and Pip Honore. We do

hope you will encourage your children to come and take part in this lunchtime activity. All children are

welcome to come along and join in. If you are interested in your child joining the school orchestra and would

like to know more about it please email [email protected] or [email protected] The orchestra

meets each Wednesday lunchtime in the hall or in Room 8.

News from Te Whare Pukapuka (Wadestown School Library)

A huge thank you to the many students who took bulging bags of Summer Reading home in December and

have remembered to bring them back to school. Fantastic effort those children!

We have two new areas of interest in the Rose Street library so far this year. One is entitled “Where in the

World is Mr Piper?” and displays maps, photos and his very entertaining emails to staff. Mr Piper promises

me regular updates and pictures of what he and his intrepid family are up to in Cambodia.

The second new area is “The Writers’ Wall”. This is a display of exemplary writing from children at our school,

because of course we have over 300 authors on site. As wonderful new examples are passed to me (either by

the students or their teachers) I will display them on the wall or in the clear file, so that classes visiting the

library can enjoy the excellent writing. The only criteria, for ease of display, is that the piece of work fits on

one A4 page.

This is a great opportunity to meet other parents and you won’t be given a job just because you attend! Babies and children are very welcome.

Volunteer needed for photoshoot We need a parent volunteer to arrange a photography session, booking families into timeslots and liaising with the photographer (you may get discounted photos for this). Please email [email protected] if you can help with this.

Important Reminders

Wadestown School Uniform Information

The full uniform range for Wadestown School is available for ordering/purchase at the NZ Uniforms

showroom at 168 Thorndon Quay, phone 238 4727 or 0800 832 693. Opening hours are 9.00am-5.00pm

Monday to Friday and 9.00am-1.00pm on Saturday. The web address is http://wadestown.nzuniforms.com

PLEASE ensure all items of your child’s uniform are clearly named, including sunhats.

Second Hand Uniform Sales

Thank you to Kirsty Bennett and her team for organising a very successful second-hand uniform sale held at

school prior to the start of the school year. There are still some good bargains available so do come and check

the second-hand uniform boxes at both sites. One is at the Rose St site, downstairs from the school office near

the door to the hall and the other is at the Weld St site next to the bell as you enter the corridor. If you have

something to sell, please put it in a clear plastic, sealable bag and write your name, phone number or email

address and your price for the item on the outside of the bag. If someone wants to buy your item, they can

contact you to arrange payment. Please note: Items up to size 6 should go directly to the Weld Street site.

It is an “all care and no responsibility” system and it operates in much the same way as an honesty box.

However for obvious reasons we don’t want people leaving cash in the boxes. The school cannot take

responsibility for items going missing, so any clothing put into the boxes is at your own risk. Pricing can vary

and half-price might be a reasonable starting point. However people should feel free to charge more or less,

or even nothing at all if they prefer. If you have any questions please contact the school office.

St and Weld St sites to their after school care programme at Western Suburbs Rugby Club in Wilton. More

Please note that Yr 7 & 8 students attend Technology classes at Karori West Normal School on Tuesdays. All

Yr 7 & 8 students need to be at school promptly by 8.30 am for roll call on Tuesdays, prior to busing to Karori

West Normal School, to be there by 9.00 am.

Absence Procedures – Both Sites

Please ensure that your child is at school by 8.55am or they will be marked absent by their teacher. If your

child is going to be late or absent could parents ring the school office (472 4779) as soon as possible in the

morning or even the night before. Please leave a message stating your name, your child’s name, their room

number or teacher’s name. We ask you not email in regard to your child’s absence as emails may not be

checked until later in the morning. When notifying the school office of your child’s lateness or absence please

also inform us of the reason (e.g. sick – type of illness ie: sore throat, tummy bug, medical appointment, etc.)

This needs to be recorded as it is a Ministry of Education requirement.

Holidays Taken During Term Time

If you are going on holiday during term time could we ask that you email the Principal, Office Manager and

classroom teacher(s) with the relevant information e.g. date of departure and expected date of return to

school. The email addresses for all staff can be found in this newsletter. Once again, this is a Ministry of

Education requirement as we must account for all children enrolled at Wadestown School each day.

Student Sign-in and Sign-out Book (Rose Street Site)

If your child arrives at the Rose St site after 8.55am they are required to sign in at the office before they go to

their classroom. If you are collecting your child during the school day for appointments, etc., we ask you to

come to the office to sign your child out. This is to avoid situations where children are waiting unsupervised at

the school entrances.

Road Safety Protocols

We ask you to please help us to keep our children safe around both school sites. Wadestown roads are very

hilly and have poor visibility. Please respect the yellow lines at both school sites. These are strictly no drop-off,

Page 8: WADESTOWN SCHOOL Community Newsletter...moving to your child’s classroom. Your child’s teacher will then share with you the programmes, routines and expectations for their class

no pick-up, no stopping, no parking areas. We would like to remind parents that the drop-off/pick-up areas at

both sites are only for children who are being dropped off or collected – cars cannot be left unattended.

At the end of the school day many students wait at the gum tree at Rose Street for parents to collect them.

There is a teacher on duty each day with the Road Patrol students. The Road Patrollers finish their duties at

3.15 pm. As the teacher goes off duty at that time, they direct any students who are still waiting to be picked

up by their families to go to the office where their parents are contacted for further instructions. This is also

when the final bell for the school day is rung.

The Weld Street site has an informal one-way system in operation and we ask that everyone drive up Cecil

Road and enter Weld St from Wade St. This assists the traffic flow greatly at peak periods i.e. before and after

school. Parking at the Weld St site is very limited so we encourage families who live some distance away to

park in an adjacent street and walk from there to the Weld St site. Please remember that parking in the

driveway of the Weld St site is strictly prohibited and parents are not to park over resident’s driveways or the

fire hydrant which is clearly marked. We are most appreciative of the Road Safety and Gate Duty “Kiss and

Drop” rosters that the Weld St site parents do voluntarily. They are invaluable in helping to keep our younger

students safe on the way to and from school.

Purakau Avenue Protocols

I would like to remind everyone of the protocols regarding Purakau Avenue which is at the bottom entrance

to the Rose St site. Purakau Avenue is a private driveway, not a public road, and the school has a long-

standing agreement with the residents to limit vehicular access to certain specified occasions only. Purakau

Avenue is a pedestrian access only and parking or stopping in the avenue is strictly prohibited. We would like

to maintain our positive relationship with all residents in Purakau Avenue and ask everyone to co-operate

with these guidelines please.

School Community Newsletters

School Community Newsletters are published once every two weeks, usually on a Thursday, and include a

regular update of the school calendar. They are published on our website and also distributed in hard copy. If

you have a community notice you wish to have considered for inclusion in a school newsletter, please email

details to [email protected]

Lost Property

Lost Property at the Rose St site is located in the corridor of the junior block outside Room 9. At the Weld St

site lost property is located in the corridor outside Room 1.

Nut Free Policy

Wadestown School has a nut-free policy and a copy of this is available from the school office. This is for the

safety of children who have a life-threatening allergy to nuts and includes nut-based spreads and products

containing whole or crushed nuts. It does not include products that are labelled ‘May contain traces of nuts’.

Page 9: WADESTOWN SCHOOL Community Newsletter...moving to your child’s classroom. Your child’s teacher will then share with you the programmes, routines and expectations for their class

Sunhats

All children throughout the school are required to wear sunhats when outside in Terms 1 and 4. Please ensure

your child has a sunhat at school each day and a reminder to please name these clearly. Wadestown School

uniform sunhats are available from the NZ Uniforms shop.

We are looking forward to a great year at Wadestown School.

Kind regards

Sally Barrett Principal
