• IEP students scheduled for the NYSAA (New York State Alternative Assessment) as indicated on their IEP, are the only student exempt from this assessment.
Why is my child being tested?
• The New York State Mathematics Assessment is designed to determine how well students have mastered necessary grade level skills.
How is the test structured?
• The test is broken up into two parts• Multiple Choice• Open Ended
• The mathematics test will be given in three sessions.

Response Questions)
Session 1: Multiple Choice
The multiple choice questions measures basic skills, concepts, and procedures
Book 1: 60 Minutes 38 ProblemsBook 2: 60 Minutes 37 Problems
Session 2: Short & Extended Response
• The short and extended response questions require students to support their answers by showing their work and/or explain how they arrived at their answers.
• The short and extended response questions measure students’ understanding of mathematical procedures and problem solving strategies
Grade 6: 70 Minutes 6 Short Response 5 Extended Response
Grade 7: 70 Minutes 6 Short Response 5 Extended Response
Grade 8: 80 Minutes
8 Short Response 5 Extended Response
Field Test Items
• This year the New York State Education Department has embedded Field Test questions in the Grade 3 – 8 Mathematics Assessment.– Students/ teachers will not know which

• Scientific Calculators are used in 7th and 8th grade only on the short response and extended response problems. Calculators may not be used on the multiple choice problems. Students should come prepared with a scientific calculator, if your child does not have a scientific calculator one will be provided by the school.
• Reference Sheets will be provided for students in grades 7 and 8 to use on the short and extended response items. The reference sheets will provide students with necessary formulas and reference information that students may need to assist them in answering certain questions.
What are teachers doing to prepare students in
