WAIROA SCHOOL WWW.WAIROA-S.SCHOOL.NSW.EDU.AU Dear Parents and Carers, A huge thank you to the Give a Little Love Foundation team who hosted a Comedy Store event for Wairoa School. It was a fabulous evening for our community to meet and enjoy the comedy and raise much needed funds for our students. It was my privilege to introduce the evening with the director of Give a Little Love Marcelo Ulvert, and outline the impact the funds raised will make to the learning opportunities for our students. The Friends of Wairoa have the goal to upgrade the current interactive whiteboards across the school. These are highly engaging for our students and provide them access to quality, connected learning experiences. We are thrilled that 5 learning areas have already had upgrades and several more will be possible through the generosity and efforts of our community. I thank the staff who came and supported on the evening and in particular Jane Cosgrave who has been a driving influence of this project. Just a reminder that therapists who come to school are working to assist the students and are guests in the school. They are not to chat to teachers in class because teachers are busy teaching all of the class. Therapy is assisting our students – but the school day is a time when staff at Wairoa are busy assisting our students to achieve their best. Kind regards Carmel Seeto Principal On Wednesday the 6 th November we held our Pink event, students and staff dressed in pink for a gold coin donation. Positive Behaviour for Learning Be a Safe Respectful Learner

During term 4 all of the expectations which support our students to be a SAFE RESPECTFUL LEARNER are explicitly taught in classes, acknowledged and rewarded across the school. The language is clear and concise and the visuals assist our students to learn and respond to the expectations. It is wonderful to observe our students responding to the positive approach used in this whole school framework.

Safe and Supportive Environment Student safety is a prime concern for the school. Parents are requested to assist by notifying the school directly if their child is absent and forward a written explanation to the teacher upon return to school – all absences must be explained. It is necessary for families to apply for extended leave if travelling during the school term. The school office staff will assist you with an Application for Extended Leave. School Uniform Students are encouraged to wear the school uniform each day. Please ensure your child’s uniform is clearly labelled. I ask parents to support and encourage their child to wear the correct school uniform. The uniform includes · Navy blue shorts or pants · Pale blue polo shirt · Navy blue fleecy jumper · Black shoes or appropriate sports shoes Plastic bags Please send in plastic bags, which we use daily across the school. Thank you for your support of this request.

Transport Variations for Respite Please let the school know if your child will not be going home on regular transport and is being picked up from an external transport provider to attend respite or after school activities.

Groups of Primary and Secondary students participated in a tactile tour of this year’s Sculptures by the Sea. Students were able to

explore selected sculptures with their senses; touching, looking and listening to different ones. Our students particularly liked the

bamboo dome caves and had fun moving from cave to cave through the small doorways. Another favourite was the corridor of mirrors and the half car half bird, we pretended to drive the car. We look

forward to this opportunity every year and students thoroughly enjoy exploring the sculptures around Marks Park.

This term we have welcomed a group of Waverley College boys to work with our students on a weekly basis. Each Thursday a group from Waverley College make their way down to Wairoa and engage in a range of activities designed to develop friendships, positive social interactions and a sense of community between our two schools. The students from Waverley College have engaged in this program with a great deal of enthusiasm and commitment. It’s lovely to see the high fives and smiles between students as they arrive to greet their friends from Wairoa and shows the real friendships that are developing amongst the students. The students have thoroughly enjoyed working with each other and it’s amazing to hear the positive feedback from the Waverley students about how much they enjoy working with our students. Take a look at the photos below of students playing the Wii, shooting the basketball and one of our students coding with a peer!

We appreciate the boy’s commitment to this program and the friendships they have shown to our students.
