WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS VS SYDNEY FC

KICKOFF: SATURDAY 7.45PM @ ALLIANZ STADIUM | TV: FOX SPORTS LIVE 7.45PM | RADIO: ABC LIVE 7.45PM

THE WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS limp into the fi rst Sydney derby of the A-League season this weekend after a

draw to the Wellington Phoenix on Sunday. The Sydney derby is fast becoming one

of the centrepieces of the sporting calendar in this city and the Wanderers would have hoped to march into this clash on the back of a strong display against the Phoenix last weekend as was predicted.

While they got off to the fast start many predicted, with a goal to Jerome Polenz

after just 15 minutes, the Wanderers failed to press home that advantage and slowly gave control of the match to the visitors.

An equalising goal from Jeremy Brockie – one of the underrated players in the competition, stashed away on the underestimated Phoenix – was deserved rather than a lucky grab for the point on the road.

Polenz’s goal was a good reward for dominating possession in the fi rst half,

especially early on in the match. Pressing higher up the pitch to maintain possession is a good sign of intent but the Wanderers lacked a killer instinct for shutting the game down with a second goal.

That will be what Coach Tony Popovic looks for this week as he prepares for the Sydney FC clash.

The silver lining to the Wanderers’ start is this week’s opponents, Sydney FC, who come into this match on the back of a 4-0 fl ogging at the hands of the Brisbane Roar

and their star, Alessandro Del Piero is under a dark injury cloud.

Del Piero, so integral to the attacking success and passing structure of the Sky Blues, sustained a calf injury during the loss on the weekend and immediately walked off the fi eld and down the tunnel.

The 38-year-old footballing maestro has been labelled as unlikely to play although the club hasn’t ruled it out entirely.

Injuries often take longer to heal as a

professional athlete ages and a player taking himself out of the game doesn’t bode well for it being a small tweak.

The Wanderers will prepare as if Del Piero will be available this week, knowing the likelihood is Sydney FC will wait until game day to select him or rule him out of the match.

Aaron Mooy, who suff ered a concussion last week, is the Wanderers’ injury concern.

He may have to sit out the match due to international protocols around concussion

management. This week the Wanderers will probably

revert to their preferred style of play, especially away from home.

They will sit back a little further in defence, let the home side do the work and explode on the counter attack with the likes of Youssef Hersi.

A slightly defensive posture will be deployed understanding Sydney FC hasn’t looked dangerous at all if Del Piero isn’t at

the heart of a move. Without him, or even with a rushed return, the Wanderers will believe they have the ability at the back to record a clean sheet in this match.

The derby is always a charged atmosphere and one that gets pulses racing.

The Sky Blues will be hoping that bolsters their team after conceding three goals within seven minutes last week and gives them resolve to stick to the task against a hard to break Wanderers wall.

If the game’s early fi ery exchanges

don’t trouble the score sheet, look for the Wanderers to win this match with a goal or two from a long range attack rather than camping in the opposition half.

The Wanderers will fi nd too many out of place Sydney FC defenders on the counter and will record a 2-0 victory to give the Red and Black Bloc a reason to celebrate.

There’s nothing like grabbing early bragging rights in the fi rst derby of the season.

Chance for bragging rightsPREVIEW BYELISHA PEARCE

The last time the Wanderers met Sydney FC, it fi nished in a 1-all draw at ParramattaStadium and stopped Western Sydney from claiming the Premier’s Plate on that day

NEW WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS recruit Tomi Juric said he fi nally feels “at home” after four years battling his

way through the Croatian football league. The 22-year-old Sydney-born striker

joined the Wanderers in the off -season on a two-year deal after a short stint with Adelaide United, which saw him make seven appearances during the latter part of last season.

Juric said he decided to return home to his Sydney roots because he was looking for a new challenge and a fresh way to improve his game.

“I saw a club that was looking to improve. The Wanderers did so much in their fi rst season and I know they want to go that one step further,” he said.

“The Asian Champions League was also a big factor in my decision to join, so was

the coach. But perhaps the biggest reason behind my decision was the opportunity to improve as a footballer.”

Juric made a stunning debut for his new club when he entered Western Sydney’s round one clash with the Central Coast Mariners in the 62nd minute whilst down 1-0. He scored a remarkable equalising goal just minutes before full-time to give the Wanderers a 1-1 draw against the 2013 Champions.

Juric believes being part of an already successful franchise in Western Sydney will keep him on his toes when it comes to competition for spots but says he doesn’t

feel any pressure to perform, in fact, it’s the opposite.

“If anything I feel confi dent because I’ve come into a team that fi nished fi rst last year and I think that shows that I have enough quality to be here,” he said.

“I believe none of the boys would be here if they weren’t good enough. Coming here has been a good decision for me and it’s rewarding having these guys around.”

In June Juric was called into the Australian Socceroos team where he played three games for the national side during the 2013 EAFF East Asian Cup. He scored one goal during a game against Japan.

HE IS THE WANDERERS’ NEWEST RECRUIT BUT TOMI JURIC HAS REVEALED HE FEELS RIGHT AT HOME IN WESTERN SYDNEY AND IS READY TO PROVE HIS WORTH THIS SEASON...

ADAM PEACOCK

ADAM Peacock is a respected sports journalist who is currently partof the Fox Sports team covering the 2013/14 A-League season

THE TERM “WHO WOULD have thought” is so applicable to so many aspects about the Western Sydney

Wanderers. The latest one – who would have thought

we’ve come to expect an occasion like last Sunday. Not hope. Expect. And so it followed, noise and colour blaring through our screens at Fox Sports HQ.

If you were there, more of it thanks. So to the next “who would have thought”:

on the eve of just the 4th version, the Sydney Derby has become the biggest annual club sporting fi xture of the nation’s biggest city.

Think about that for a second… there is next to no history to lean back on here, but right away, there is a special vibe about these

two coming together.True, it follows a classic script – glamour

boys of the East, working class of the West. Those stereotypes might be stretched

a bit here, Sydney FC train closer to Pirtek Stadium than the Wanderers do, but it’s not too far from the mark.

However back to that statement – there is no bigger club fi xture across all codes than this one, when form of the two teams involved is irrelevant and there’s an enhanced sense of achievement for the winner, desolate sense of failure for the loser.

The NRL gets some great crowds, especially at each end of the season when it’s not so cold but rugby league’s marquee fi xtures are more about who is in form rather

than a tribal sentiment. The Roosters-St George Illawarra ANZAC

Day clash is a grand occasion which has grown exponentially, but it is more part of a day all about national commemoration.

Rugby Union – well it depends who the Waratahs play at home each season and how they are travelling.

As for AFL, GWS have to start being competitive – which might happen one day – before their duo of clashes with the Swans can be billed as a showdown of epic proportions.

The fervour from beyond the fence won’t be out of line with some of the other massive derbies around the world this weekend.

KEEP ING UP W ITH COV IC

GOAL keeper ANTE Covic gives us a player’s perspective on the Western Sydney Wanderers with an exclusive column every single week

WE WENT INTO THE game against Wellington with the mindset of getting the three points but we are

very disappointed that we didn’t. If you look at the performance of the

whole game, a draw is probably what we deserve – we can’t go sitting around saying we were the better side.

We dropped our intensity after an excellent fi rst 25 minutes where we completely dominated play.

We were probably deserved of a second goal which maybe would’ve killed off the game but then we just fell into a pattern of sitting back, forcing play and maybe mentally believing the game was going to be ours and we paid the price for it.

I must admit I did get frustrated at my team during parts of the game but that’s my personality on the fi eld.

When you can sniff things aren’t going well, and you know we can play better as

collective group, I get frustrated. After that fi rst 25 minutes I could feel, sense and see things starting to slip away and I wanted to try and wake the boys up and let them know this isn’t good enough.

I made a crucial double-save which kept it at 1-0 and that was just about my exploding point right there, I let it go.

I let them know it wasn’t good enough and that we needed to pick up our game.

Unfortunately, the very next play they scored a goal, so it didn’t seem to work too much.

I play with a lot of passion and if I feel we can do a lot better I’ll be outspoken because I want the best performance from a team that’s very good.

I always look forward to the local derby with Sydney FC.

I’ve been involved with a lot of derbies around the world in Europe and in Melbourne.

Derby games are a diff erent type of emotion.

It’s a game where you pinpoint at the start of the season when you are playing Sydney FC.

It’s a huge buzz, the whole city gets behind it and you want bragging rights.

It’s going to be a tough game, regardless of where both teams are at, you don’t want to be losing to your enemy.

We’ve got to go into the game switched on and make sure we get the fi rst bragging rights of the season.

Do you have a question you would like to ask Ante Covic?

We’re opening up the fl oor to you to ask him the questions you’ve always wanted to know about the Wanderers. Email [email protected] or post your question to Ask Ante, Suite 2, 42-44 Abel Street Jamisontown NSW 2750.

LAST WEEK ’S ACT ION

WANDERERS 1 – PHOENIX 1

THERE IS NOTHING QUITE like a packed Pirtek Stadium, and Wanderland was in full voice for

Sunday’s much anticipated clash against the Wellington Phoenix. With Tomi Juric and Shinji Ono named in the starting line-up, Wanderers fans had a right to be optimistic as their team looked to get maximum points in their fi rst home game of the season.

The Wanderers dominated the early stages, and the relationship between Juric and Hersi really had the Phoenix on the back foot. Juric’s ability to receive the ball and bring his teammates into play led to Hersi and Bridge looking the most likely to break the deadlock.

The Phoenix were hanging on by a thread and the pressure fi nally told when Jerome Polenz pounced off a clearing header to convert his fi rst ever A-League goal from the edge of the box.

The rest of the fi rst half continued in the same fashion, with Phoenix coach Ernie Merrick even forced to make a tactical substitution in the fi rst half to try and limit

the Wanderers’ dominance in the centre of the park. The only dampener in a largely dominant half of football was the head clash sustained by Aaron Mooy that forced him to leave the fi eld.

The second half brought much of the same, and only Beauchamp knows how he didn’t manage to give his side a 2-0 cushion with a glaring miss.

Wanderers were wasteful in front of goal and the Phoenix knew they were still in with a chance and seemed to step up a gear.

Phoenix’s constant pressure paid off as substitute Paul Ifi ll got the better of D’Apuzzo and curled in a brilliant cross for the arriving Jeremy Brockie who levelled the scores.

On the balance of play Wellington deserved their equaliser as the Wanderers were left to rue their missed opportunities in the fi rst half.

Wanderers’ response wasn’t all that convincing, with two late penalty appeals and a Santalab strike that hit the upright their only real highlights in the latter stages.

Both appeals were rightfully waved away by referee Jarred Gillett, despite the cries of thousands of fans. The match ended 1-1.

WANDERERS PLAYERS AND STAFF will be enjoying more hot dogs this summer after the club announced

a sponsorship agreement with Primo Smallgoods. The Primo logo will be seen on the back of the Wanderers players’ shorts in season 2013/14. “It is fantastic to have a local success story like Primo attach themselves to our club. Western Sydney Wanderers built itself on a platform of working with and supporting the community of western Sydney. It is at the heart of everything we do and stand for,” said Wanderers Executive Chairman, Lyall Gorman.

The Wanderers now have more of an incentive to boost their goal rate this season after Pirtek announced it would donate $1000 to St Vincent’s Hospital every time the Wanderers score a goal. The announcement coincides with a new partnership between the hospital and the club. The Wanderers’ goals will be coined “Pirtek Wander Goals” for the entire 2013/14 season. Get scoring boys!

The sponsorship announcements keep on coming with the news that Guardian Funerals has jumped on board to sponsor the Western Sydney Wanderers ‘Wandercrew’

volunteer team. The Wandercrew have a huge role on game days ushering people to their seats and providing spectators with important information. Make sure you say “G’day” to yours truly, Wally the Wanderer, at the next home game.

Things seem to be going from bad to worse for the Socceroos. After a bunch of recent losses abroad, the men in gold have slipped four places to a disturbingly low 57 on the FIFA world rankings. The latest ranking list is very important as it is used by FIFA to determine the seedings for the

December 6 draw for next year’s World Cup. Spain is the number one country.

Are you a massive Wanderers fan and want to be featured in Wanderworld in a future edition? Starting next week, I’ll be featuring Penrith’s biggest Wanderers fans each week in my column. All you have to do is snap a ‘selfi e’ of yourself at a Western Sydney Wanderers game wearing your supporters gear and email it to me at [email protected].
