    THIS JOURNAL AND ITS SACRED MISSIONHIS Journal is one of the prime factors or instruments in the system of Bible instruction, or "Seminary Extension", now beingpresented in all parts of the civilized world by tile WATCI~ OWERIBLE& TRACTOCIETY, chartered A.D. 1884, "For the Pro-of Christian Knowledge". It not only serves as a class room where Bible students may meet in the study of the divine Word buas ~ channel of communication through which they may be reached with announcements of the Societys conventions and 0 thof its traveling representatives, styled "Pilgrims", and refreshed with reports of its conventions.Our "Berean Lessons" are topical rehearsals or reviews of our Societys published STUDIESmost entertainingly arranged, and veryto all who would merit the only honorary degree which the Society accords, viz., Verbi Dei Minister (V. D. M.), which translatedMinister of Gods Word. Our treatment of the International Sunday School Lessons is specially for the older Bibleand teachers.     "2he Spirit of the Lord God s upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach the good tidings unto themeelJ: . . . to proclaim.., the day of vengeance of our God; to comfortall that moura." Isaiah 61: 1, 2.tiE paramount duty devolving upon every intel-ligent creature is to glorify God. It is the ex-pressed will of Jehovah that the unfolding andof his plan shall be to his glory. When heprogram relating to man is complete, every fea-

    reflect the dignity, majesty, and gloryGod. Christians, being the chief recipients of Je-favor, should ahvays be eager to do somethingthe glory of God. Working in harmony with theplan, and being prompted so to do by unselfishto the lmrd and to his cause, will accomplishthe faithful this desired end.2The year 1925 is here.     his divinely-given commission or warrant of

    authority. A commission is a formal statement con-ferring power and authority upon one or more crea-tures authorizing or commanding he doing of certa:nthings. One receiving such commission will, if he isdiscreet, from time to time consult the terms or pro-visions of that commission, and ascertain whether ornot he is performing those duties.

    5The anointed ones must hold fast to that which theyhave learned, to wit: That the Lord Jesus Christ, theRedeemer and Head of the Church, is now present andhas taken his power and begun his reign; that the greatfundamental truths of Gods plan have been restoredto the Church, which restoration was foreshadowed bythe work of Elijah; that the Lord has come to his tem-ple and is examining the members thereof; that thepresent workof the Church his side of the xail was fore-shadowed by the work of Elisha, who did both a slay-ing and a comforting work ; that the part of the commission given to the Church yet unfulfilled is: To de-clare the day of vengeance of our God, and to comfortall that mourn.

    ~An abundant entrance into the kingdom of our Lordand Savior is the sincere desire of each one of theanointed. To this end it is essential that he hold fastin these precious truths, tie must hold fast withfortitude; he must increase in knowledge, hence thenecessity for the study of the Word of God; he mustexercise self-control and cheerfully drink the potionwhich the Lord has poured for him ; he mutt grow ingodliness, manifesting love for the brethren and an un-selfish devotion to the Lord and his cause. The doingof these things will require the faithful performance ofthe obligations laid upon the Christian by his divingygiven commission. The promise is, that if he gives dili-gence to the doing of these things he shall never fall,and he shall have an abundant entrance into the ever-lasting kingdom. t seems clear, therefore, that activityin proportion to opportunity is now required of all whowill from this time forward enter into the kingdom.

    DAY OF VENGEANCESThe worhl is in distress amt perplexity, and mensare failing them for fear. Selfishness is gone toand the people groan and t~avail in pain under thegreatly desire to be delivered. Itthe duty of the Church to tell the people what these

    THE BATTLEnFJ om ts beginning the destruction of Zion has beeatten~pted by Satan and his seed. This is well knowto every Christian. Seeing now hat our Lord has takerlhis regal power, that the day of Gods vengeance s hero,and that it must be .de(lared by the Zion class, we maknowwith certainty that Satan will employ ll of his powers to destroy the seed of promise. A great eonfliet, there-fore, is to be expected. The Lord has given us ntuehScriptural Froof that ,qalan will throw the powerof hisentire army against the anointed ones of God. Filefour difleren[ namesby whieh Satan is knownand ,]o~,-ignored indicate the method of his attack.:As a "serpent" we are to expect that Satan wiltpresent all mannerof deceptions, both of doctrine and ofpractice, in his attempt {o deceive and to seduce theanointed ones. Wehave the assurance, however, that itis not possible for him to deceive the very elect. Buonly the faithful will be of the very elect. Thefaithful ones will not be turned aside from the Lord~message and his methods of pronmlgading it because ()fthe wily deceptions of that old serpent, tile devil.

    ~3As a slanderer, which the name "devil" signific,~,we are to expect the enemy o level against the anointedones of God all manner of vile, malicious, false, audslanderous accusations. Being thus forewarned, let everyChristian see to it that he does not lend himself at anytime to the devil by slandering or by repeating a slander-ous aceusation spoken against his brother. Let eachone of the anointed have in mind, if he hears somslandering his brother, that this is the work of the deviland not the work of the Lord, nor of those whohave the,spirit of the Lord. Let him remember that to repea~a slanderous accusation is equally as bad as telling itfirst-hand. Let each one who is of the anointed, keepin mind thht the Lord Jesus has laid down a code ofprocedure directing how the offenders amongst theanointed shall be dealt with, and that the only safecourse for the Church to pur.-ue is to follow closelythat code of proeedure.--Matthew 18: 15-17.~48atan memosopposer; and we are sure that Satanwill continue to oppose every effort on the part of theanointed to make known he message of truth; and thatto accomplish his purpose he will intimidate, browbeatand discourage those whoare diligently striving to ad-vertise the King of Glory and his kingdom.

    ~As "dragon" means devourer, we may be sure thai.the enemywill resort to every possible wicked scheme odevour and destroy the anointed ones of the Lord.~These assaults against the anointed ones by theenemy will cause some to mourn. It is the will of Gothat others of Zion shall comfort those who do mourn~It is reasonable to conclude that the devil now sees

    that his time is short. And since he sees this, we mabe sure that he has great wrath against the anointed oneo~ God that he will make war with the ~emnant of the

The chief conmmud-meat given to the church now s to fulfil the obligMionsof the divindy-given commission. Therefore each onemust be diligent in faithfully trying to perform theseobligations by activity in the service. Against these thedevil will do his uhnost.--flcvelation 12: 12-17.~SAgain, he Scriptures show hat that element of thedevils organization designated as the "beast" will makewith the Lamb. Revelation 17 : 14) This is in har-with the words of the Prophet, that. these shall takethe Lord and against his anointed andlheir desfruction.--Psalm 2: 2, 3.~gNows the time when the anointed of Jehovah, nn-der the leadership of their Head, are binding the kingschains aml their nobles with fetters of iron. (Psalm149:8) And this is being done by the faithful onesproclaiming the message of truth. It i~ these bonds

The army of theenemy is an imposing one. It is composed,of greathost of visible agents and representatives of the devil,as well as of a multitude of invisible ones. The Lordanointed are small in number. This army of the evilone will strike terror to the hearts of all whohave noa large measure of the holy spirit. For the anointedto withstand the shock of battle will require absolutefaith and confidence in the Lord, an abiding in theshadowof his hand, and a faithful keeping of his commandments. t is no time for selfishness. It is a timefor love to be manifested perfectly; and love is theexpression of nselfishness. Eael: one must remembethat not only are the members of Zion commanded olove one another even as Jesus loved us, but that each

    one is specifically commanded o minister unto hisbrather in Zion.z;Some of the anointed will probably yield to theseductive influenees about them, join the enemy, andthereby make the burden of the faithful ones stiltmore difficult to tarry- Some will be stronger thanothers in the fight because of their greater faith, zealand love, and having a larger measureof the holy spirit."We hen that are strong ought to bear the infirmitiesof the weak, and not to please ourselves." (Romans 51) Otherwise stated, we should put aside selfishnessand lovingly render aid to our brethren.COMFORT ZION

    =7Only hose whohave the spirit of he Lord are considered in this text : "The spirit of the Lord God s upome; beeause the Lord hath anoil,.ted me... to comfortall that mourn." Every one, in proportion to the spiri~of the Lord he possesses, will be on the alert energetical-ly and actively to obey this commandmentf the Lord.Rememberhat tlmse who composed the little band ofGideonwere awake,on the alert to let their lights shine,and did so unselfishly. This was indicated by thebreaking of their pitchers, foreshadowing that the members nowmust even saerillce themselvesunselfishly to lettheir lights shine. The unselfish ones in Zion remenbet that part of their commission which reads: "Giveunto them [.that mourn in Zion], beauty for ashes,the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise forthe spirit of heaviness." They remember that the Lordsays: Do this 5n order that those who are thus comforted maybe encouraged to hold fast in the battle andgain the ~idory, to the end that they may"be calledtrees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, tha~he might be glorified." What s meant by thus minister-ing to our brethren in Zion ?2S"Ashes" symbolize deep humiliation, grea~ sorrowand woe. (2 Samuel 13:19 ; Esther 4: 1-3; Job 2: 8;

    =gIf an anointed one of the Lord finds his brother insuffering such humiliation, sorrow or woe fromreason, he is commanded o give him beauty for

    a"Beauty" is a symbol representing embellishment or"In thatshall the Lord of hosts be for a crown of glory,for a diadem of beauty, unto the residue of hisfor a spirit of judgment o him that sittcthjudgment, and for strength to them that turn the bat-to the gate." (Isaiah 28 : 5, 6) The residue, or remnantto the last membersof the Christ on earth. Tosuch beauty means to point them to something thatornament their minds, to induce happy and beauti-thoughts, and thereby bring strength.

    3~Mourning," in Isaiah 61:3, means to bewail orlament, which mayresult by reason of ones ownfoolish-ness or carelessness (Psalm 38: 5, 6), or because of hiswandering away from God (Psalm 42: 1-6), or becausesome one has wrongfully induced him to turn away fromhis faithfulness in following the Lord, thereby causinghim to become weak in faith and in zeal for the Lor(Psalm 43:1-3), or because o fear of some threatenedor impending calamity.--Daniel 10 : 2.

    35AChristian mayfoolishly becomecareless regardingthe opportunities of serving the Lord, thus causing himself to mourn when he discovers his mistake. He mawander away from the Lord, thus causing himself greatsorrow and distress. He may permit some deceitfulones, whoclaim to be brethren in the truth, wrongfullto turn him away from the Lords service and causehim to become dle and indifferent, and thus cause himself much mourning. It is the privilege and duty ofthe anointed of the Lord, if he finds his brother insuch distress, to dispel his mourning and to comforhim by giving him the oil of joy for such mourning.

    3~"Joy" means gladness, satisfaction and delight because of the blessings of goodness, present or hoped for,both for oneself and for other creatures obedient to thelaw of God. (1 Thessalonians 2: 19, 20) The joyJesus consisted in the possession of sweet fellowshipwith the Lord Jehovah, and the prospect and certaintyof bringing all the obedient ones of mankindback intofull harmony with God. (Hebrews 12 : 2) If we possessthe blessings of the goodness of the Lord now, or havreason to expect such blessings in the near future antherefore have a hope for the same, such brings joy andelight.

    3~Let the anointed one give his brother the oil ofjoy for mourning by pointing the sorrowing one to thofact that the Lord of Glory is nowpresent; that he hagathered unto himself his saints ; that he has come tohis temple, and is examining and receiving his approveones ; that these are present blessings of goodness whiccan be had only by the Christian; and that the Lordis saying to the approved ones: Because of your faith-fulness over a few things I will makeyou ruler over manthings ; I invite you now to enter into my oy. Pointhe mourningone to the fact that it is his blessed privi-lege to cease his foolishness and carelessness, and to re-turn whole-heartedly to the Lord and to his service;to cease to listen to or hear the voice of the mischievouand wicked ones that turned him away from the Lordand his service; that it is his blessed privilege to seekGod through the merit of Christ, his Advocate, andreceive forgiveness for his imperfections. This condi-tion may result to a Christian by failure to study, toappreciate and to obey the Wordof God, and thereforeto a failure to engage in the proclamation of the mes-

    sage of the kingdom (Hebrews 5: 11, 1~; Psalm 119:27, 28); or it may be because there is a seeming de-lay in the fulfilment of the promise for the eompletaestablishment of the kingdom. (Hebrews 10: 32-37;Proverbs 13 : 12) Some may think that the kingdom isdelayed, that their hope is deferred, and that the chro-nology is wrong; and they may becomeheavy in spirit,dull, faint, depressed or despondent. Or some may getinto this condition because somedear friends have failedto appreciate and obey the Lord, and have wanderedaway from him (Romans9 : 2, 3), or because of diverstemptations into which they have fallen.--1 Peter 1: 6.aWe can see howsome in Zion this year may be foundin a spirit of heaviness.     give these the garment of praise for the spirit of heavi-ness. It will be a blessed privilege so to do.44A garment is a covering or robe by which one ismarked or distinguished. (Deuteronomy :~2: 5) Praisemeans due acknowledg:ment m~dreeclat,orion of theperfections, the great and wonderful excellencies of theLord, and to laud and mortify his name. It means tomention with ~oy Jehovahs great p/an and how it isrevealed and carried into action.

    ~To put on the garment of praise therefore means todistinguish oneself by boldly, fearlessly and joyfullyproclaiming the truth, advertising the King and hiskingdom; and by pointing the people to the fact thatJehovah is God, and that his power is now being lov-ingly manifested on behalf of mankind. Everyone whoputs on this garment of praise will be actively engagedin kingdom work, as the Lord gives opportunity, andwill be doing it with joy. lie will thereby distinguishhimself from all others of the world, and particularlyrom those who are of he devils organization, tiewill be a markedperson amongst all others.

    4~If then we find a brother in the spirit of heaviness,it will be our privilege to call his attention to theprecious promises and to the meat in due season whichthe Lord is placing upon his table for his people; topoint him to the scriptures which show hat it is now heprivilege of the Christian to do the will of God, andfaithfully to tarry and watch for his due time for thefulfilment of his promises, having faith always that god,having promised a thing, will do it.     COMFORT ALL64The world is now n a state of great distress an,!sorrow. The spirit of the Lord has departed from nominal Christendom. Their unfaithful shepherds haveabandoned the Lord and his cause, have joined forceswith the devil and have left the people without food

    and without help. (Ezekiel 34:: 1-12) The enemy Sa-tan has mustered all his forces and is makinga desperatattempt to discredit God completely, to make him ap-pear a liar, and to make he religion of Jesus Christ appeaa fraud and ~ snare. The devil has brought a mightyflood of error, falsehood and slander upon the peo-ples of the world, blinding them to Gods plan and pur-poses ; and the order-loving ones of the earth are ingreat discomfort. What, then, is the plain duty of theanointed of the Lord at this time?6~Through his prophet God answers : "When he enemshall come n like a flood, the spirit of the Lord shall

    lift up a standard against him."--Isaiah 59 : 19.6~Be it noted that the spirit of the Lord lifts up astandard against the devil, the enemy. Then it neces-sarily follows that only those who have the spirit ofthe Lord, and are anointed of the spirit, will be usedby him in lifting up this standard. It seems clear thatthe standard here mentioned is the message of truth,the message of the kingdom.(Revelation 19 : 15 ; Isaiah11 : 4) This, then, is the means that the Lord will employ to comfm% he order-loving ones on earth. Thcommission given to the anointed therefore lays uponthem the obligation of comforting all in the world thatmourn by proclaiming to them the Lords kirgdom andby telling them what it will mean to mankind.

    To "preserve" means to hedge about, to guard, foto watch and save. The true Church is no~.that Satan, the enemy, is employinghis agencies and powers to accuse, oppose, deceive,and destroy the seed of promise.     "The joy of the Lord is your strer~gth."--Nehemiah8:10.T HIS means to be glad and rejoice in the Lord.Some feel glad for a time because of materialblessings which they have, such as houses, lands,ease and bodily comfort. But this text applies to theChristian only; namely, the one who is in Christ,whose word is abiding in the Christian. He realizesthe i)erilous times nowon the earth, the great sufferingand distress; but these do not disturb his inmost eahnlie appreciates the fact that the enemy s using everypower at his command o discomfort and destroy theChristian. He is fully aware of the fact that somwho claim to be brethren lend themselves, for a timeat least, to the devil by evil speaking and slander, working injury to others. None of these things bring anyjoy to him; neither do they discourage him, nor causehim to fear nor to be dismayed.

    One who is really devoted to the Lord, because oflove for him and his cause, has a real appreciation ofthe Lords presence, that he has really begun his reign,that there is a desperate battle on between the Lord andthe forces of evil ; and he knows hat tile Lord is certainof victory, tie appreciates the fact that certain kingdointerests have been committed o him, that the Lord lmcome o his temple and is inviting the faithful to eni"rinto his joy.     FTER esus had eonehded his discourse respect-ing his return at the second advent, he began toprepare for the Passover supper. Apparently henot told his diseiples where he wonhl keep theperhaps to keep the knowledge from Judas andto save interference by the Pharisees. Somesuggested float Jesus had an arrangement made tothe supper at the home of the mother of JohnAs the hour for the supper drew on, Jesus sentof his disciples into the city to prepare for thehe had made an arrangement withfor his rather large company seems certain.2Jesus way of sending the two disciples, Peter andhouse was sin~flar. As they ate,Jesus would alk of the deliveranee of Israel from Egypwhich the meal commemorated,of the hopes it kindled,and of all it meant both to Israel and to Egypt : Happiness to the saved, agony to Egypt. He would speakof the blood of the lamb which protected the firstborn,and of the roast flesh which they all ate and which gavethem strength for their journey, and of the bitter herbswhich gave zest to the appetite.qt was while supper was proceeding that Jesus, evi-dently with the purpose of bringing Judas to a con-clusion, began to speak of the betrayal, saying, "Verily:l say nnto you, that one of you shall betray me." (Mat-thew 26 : 21) He quoted the scripture: "He that eatethbread with me, hath lifted up his heel against me."(John 13:18; see Psalm 41:9) This raised the cry,from all: "Lord, is it It" and Judas had to take it upwith the rest, only that Judas addressed his Master as"Rabbi"; he never called Jesus "Lord". Jesus answeredhim privately: "Thou hast said." (Matthew 26: 25)He gave the sop of bread to Judas, partly that the fore-going scripture should be fulfilled, and partly to letJohn and Peter know who it was that shouht betrayhim. Judas took the sop, and with that hypocriticalact Satan entered into him. He went out into the nightto betray and to sell his Master.

    7While they were still eating the passover, Jesus tooka loaf and, breaking it, gave to each of the disciples,saying, "This is my body, which is given for you: thisdo in remembrance of me." (Luke 22: 19) This gaveto the disciples a new meaning to the Passover.     ~aIf Jesus linked the then present with the far-awaypast, the night much to be remembered (Exodus 12:42), he also linked that night with the future, tielooked forward to the time when he and his faithfulservants would again eat together and together wouldrink the true wine, that of the joy of the Lord. Iffor a time wine was made to represent blood, and there-fore death, that was not its permanent symbolism.It represents that which makes glad the heart of Goand man. They had neglected both theordinary decencies and the courtesies in their desire toget the chief seats.

    -After the things referred to in last Sundays lessonJesus spoke about leaving them; and the disciples weref.arful, the more so as he told them that where he wasgoing they could not then go. Peter doubted this,and said to his Master: "Lord, whither goest thou?...Whycan not I follow thee now? I will lay down mylife for thy sake."
