FLORIDA’S “WINTER” IS wrapping up and as cooler nights turn into warm, spring evenings, you’ll no

doubt want to get out and enjoy everything our rich arts community has to offer in 2015. We’ve taken the liberty of scouring websites, contacting event venues and looking for that speciic LGBT interest in shows and performances stretching from now and into the summer.

You’ll notice that listings start with the east coast of the state and work their way west—through Daytona, Orlando, Lakeland, Tampa, Clearwater, St. Petersburg and Sarasota. We’ve also highlighted some of the larger acts to come through, many

of which will make multiple stops in our area.

Enjoy the cultural scene of Florida this year, and remember, dates are subject to change so check with the individual venues for speciics.

Elton JohnSIR ELTON JOHN IS ONE OF THE

MOST HIGHLY ACCLAIMED AND SUCCESSFUL SOLO ARTISTS OF

ALL TIME. He has achieved 37 gold and 27 multi-platinum albums, has sold more than 250 million records worldwide, and holds the record for the biggest selling single of all time. Over the fi ve decades since his career began in 1969, Elton has played more than 3,500 concerts in over 80 countries.

In 2015 he’ll add to that number with a North American tour that brings him to Orlando’s Amway Arena on March. 7.

In 2014, Elton John married his long-time partner David Furnish, with whom he is raising two young sons.

While Elton John elicits a list of favorite music upon hearing his name, his advocacy in the HIV/AIDS arena is just as legendary. He founded the Elton John AIDS Foundation in 1992 and is an ambassador to several more. He is also passionate about LGBT rights, the rain forests of the planet and continuing education in music.

But it truly is about the music, which is why he’s touring again this year.

MAY 11, AMALIE ARENA, TAMPA

Bette MidlerHER CAREER BEGAN IN THE

BATHS, but she has soared to international stardom. Bette

Midler is one of the most recognized singers and actors in the world, and following the release of 2014’s It’s the Girls!, Midler embarked on a nationwide tour that brings her to the Amalie Arena in downtown Tampa May 11.

In her career, Midler has reached beyond music to become a celebrated name in fi lm, television and on the stage, winning Grammys, Golden Globes, Emmys and a special Tony Award.

Expect a fantastical performance from the Divine Miss M, as she has said she has a truck full of hairpieces and a caravan of props and special stage equipment.

Midler is, of course, a huge supporter of the LGBT community and has proudly declared her excitement over the successes the marriage equality movement has seen in recent years. But she does admit she’s a little nostalgic for the time before LGBT issues were so mainstream.

Midler only has a few stops in Florida, and her gig in Tampa is the only one in Central Florida. Expect a sold-out performance and fans of all ages and all sexualities. And don’t be surprised if you see a female impersonator or two dressed as the Divine One herself.

JULY 25, DR. PHILLIPS, ORLANDOJULY 28, RUTH ECKERD HALL, CLEARWATER

Idina MenzelLGBTS ARE ALWAYS AHEAD OF

THE TREND WHEN IT COMES TO ENTERTAINMENT, so we knew

about the amazing voice that is Idina Menzel from her iconic Broadway roles as Elphaba in Wicked and Maureen in RENT before that. It seems the rest of the world didn’t discover her amazing talent until her role as Elsa in the Disney blockbuster Frozen. The fi lm’s hit song, “Let It Go” earned an Academy-Award and Menzel became a household name across the country.

The song helped make Menzel the fi rst person in history with both a Billboard Top 10 hit and a Tony Award for acting.

Now the performer is touring the country, and she’ll stop at the Dr. Phillips Center in Orlando on July 25 before sharing her talents with audiences at Clearwater’s Ruth Eckerd Hall July 28.

Not only is Menzel a favorite among music fans these days, she’s also an ally of the LGBT community, having voiced her support numerous times in articles appearing across the country.

This Broadway star turned pop icon isn’t giving up on her roots, so theater fans can relax. It’s said Menzel will reprise her role as Elizabeth in the original Broadway production of If/Then following her tour.

Menzel received her third Tony nomination for the role and performed “Always Starting Over” from If/Then at the 2014 Tony Awards.

Sarah McLachlan

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN FOUR YEARS, Lilith Fair founder Sarah McLachlan is touring with brand

new music. The tour accompanying her newest album, Shine On, brings her to 24 U.S. cities in 2015, and three of those stops are in Central and West Florida.

McLachlan will appear at Orlando’s new Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts on March 24, Sarasota’s Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall on March 27 and Clearwater’s Ruth Eckerd Hall on March 29.

The Canadian native has a huge LGBT following, but her fan base is largely women of all sexualities. In 2014, the “Arms of an Angel” singer famously described herself as “mostly straight” in an interview with a gay press outlet in Michigan. She went on to say that she had made out with more than one woman, but admitted alcohol was possibly a factor.

Regardless, the singer is an advocate for LGBT rights and has consistently stated so in multiple interviews.

Her support of same-sex marriage and anti-discrimination policies has endeared her to LGBTs and allies alike.
