Pull off those light jackets and those silk scarves, arts lovers and convivial extroverts, because things are heating up in Florida, and we’ve got the inside line on many of the glorious

distractions that will make your lightly chilled heart go all afl utter in the coming months. From high arts to the lowbrow, ballet to basketball, Watermark’s Spring Arts Guide is here to be your friend as you crawl out of that cave that’s actually a pretty temperate bungalow or condo, isn’t it? You should be dancing, yeah?

As in previous years, we’ve culled the press-release transom and clung to our phones for some of the most exciting events available to those from coast to coast in Central Florida: starting at the Space Coast, toe-tapping and tipsily swinging through Orlando and, fi nally, winding up blissfully entertained on (and off ) the shores of our

west coast. Everything is eff ectively a short daytrip for everyone reading this, so you have no excuses. Get out and do something you’ve never done before. You deserve it. Your community deserves it.

In this compact resource guide, we’ve got a litany of concerts, recitals, theatrical histrionics and traveling circuses awaiting your

perusal. The LGBT community has grown immensely and morphed into something that you wouldn’t believe just a couple of years ago, but that shouldn’t stop you from branching out into parts unknown for excursions you won’t soon forget.

As usual, all dates and events are subject to change, so please make a note to check with the provided venue websites and phone numbers before you leave the cold couch. You already know that, though. Now get up, open the door and get out! You won’t regret it. Happy spring!

THE RITE OF SPRING!

Dance your way out of another pretend Florida winter with our 2016 Spring Arts Guide!

MARCH 18–APRIL 3, 2016 • GARDEN THEATRE, WINTER GARDEN • GARDENTHEATRE.ORG

THE WHALEORLANDO THEATER LEGEND MICHAEL WANZIE

being directed by co-legend Beth Marshall in the quaint Garden Theater in cozy Winter Garden? It

sounds like the setup for an elaborate joke – or a Fringe show. It’s actually a great team bent on producing the brilliant, intimate comic drama The Whale.

For 13 productions at the famous Garden Theatre, Beth Marshall Presents has been pushing the envelope. It could be considered a surprising development that small-town people really clamor for her shows.“Almost everything I do there is dramatic, boundary-pushing, [material] that goes a bit further and further,” producer Marshall says. “The marketing tells the audience what they’re in for; Winter Garden people are so prepared for this!”

Wanzie will take the lead as Charlie, a 600-pound gay man trying to eat himself to death since his lover died 15 years before. Despite his self-destruction, he reaches out to his estranged teenage daughter and a young Mormon missionary. It’s sensitive but darkly hilarious stuff , built to make people squirm as it entertains.

“It’s a beautiful funny play with a big heart,” Marshall says when asked why she chose the script.

Of Wanzie, Marshall says, “After his dramatic role as the Father in Doubt [also for Marshall], this is another chance to show people how talented he is.”

Here’s hoping Wanzie’s usual Fringe and Parliament House audiences will make the trek out to lovely Winter Garden, have a nice meal along Plant Street and then settle in at the beautifully restored Garden Theatre for what promises to be a unique and extraordinary experience. —Stephen Miller

AVENUE Q“AVENUE Q IS A BIG OLD

BEAR HUG OF A MUSICAL!” Mad Cow Theater executive

director Mitzi Maxwell says. “I mean, it’s Sesame Street for adults.”

That it is, with puppets and humans interacting to teach us all valuable lessons.

The Tony-winning musical fi nds it’s way onto downtown Orlando’s intimate, professional stage. The production – sponsored by Watermark – boasts nude puppet sex, a couple of stuff ed bears proff ering bad advice, and a puppet stripper. The most shocking character is a pre-deceased Gary Coleman, whose career has turned south. Now the actor manages a tenement building in a less desirable section of an unnamed metropolis.

Complaining about high rent in the city, one character looks at Coleman’s crappy, run-down apartment building and cheerfully states, “This neighborhood looks a lot cheaper!”

Juan Cantu – who directed last season’s Ain’t Misbehavin’ “is chomping at the bit to get to work on it,” Maxwell says.

And who wouldn’t? Avenue Q boasts very, very adult lessons about racism, sexism, one-night stands, and even coming out of the closet. Be warned; one of the songs is titled, “Everyone’s a Little Bit Racist.” Another is, “The Internet is for Porn.”

Even for a show that’s 12 years old – the famous small show that stole the Tony from megalomaniacal Wicked – Avenue Q is still a titillating crowd pleaser. Don’t miss this off -color, sweet-hearted musical replete with furry characters, sex, and curse words. —Stephen Miller

FEB. 11-13, ORLANDO • THE ARTEGON MARKETPLACE, 5250 INTERNATIONAL DRIVEMARCH 3- 5, TAMPA • 6818 S. MANHATTAN AVE.

NUDE NITESINCE 1996 IN ORLANDO, this pop-up gallery has

been gathering artist and arts fans to celebrate the human form. Recently repeated in Tampa,

this very large, very impressive three-night event off ers up painting, photography, sculpture, metalwork, digital art, multi-media, experimental works, and even live entertainment.

It’s the largest nude art show in America, if you’re a size queen. Nude Nite promised those who purvey and those who peruse a full 25,000 square feet of exhibition space!

More importantly, Nude Nite gives many people the chance to view, buy and sell daring and beautiful works that a lot of mainstream galleries here in the South are a little too priggish to show.

This titillating event has grown so popular that Orlando Sentinel and others have called it “not to be missed.” It’s been featured in Creative Loafi ng, on ABC News, in OrlandoMagazine, Florida Art and Leisure and Orlando Weekly. The event attracts thousands.

One aspect is “Extreme Dreams,” a phantasmal performance piece that changes nightly, evolving as it develops.

In fact, they’re still looking for artists and acts for Orlando; call is open until Jan. 28. It costs $40 to display, and you get a free artist’s pass to the rest of the show. Information can be found at the website listed above.

Of course, you must be 21 or older to display or attend Nude Nite. —Stephen Miller

DURAN DURAN

“STYLES CHANGE BUT STYLE DOESN’T,” British legends Duran Duran once

proclaimed in their off -period of the late ‘90s. And while the band’s lineup has changed over the decades – Duran Duran initially formed in 1978, fact fans – their sonically adventurous spirit and blipping zeitgeist connections remain fi nely in check.

While their ‘80s peers poodle out to backtracks blasting only “the hits,” Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes, John Taylor and Roger Taylor have only pushed their own creative limits into the future, hits or not. What else would they do? Fortunately, there are still hits, especially lately. Last year’s skyscraper of a record Paper Gods won them a new contract with Warner Bros. Records, universal critical acclaim, more industry awards for the mantle and landed the band back in the top 10 the world over, including in the their native UK and an increasingly beat-drowned Billboard Hot 200 here in the U.S.

With the collaborative assistance of funk legend Nile Rodgers (Chic), Mr. Hudson (Kanye West) and prior collaborator and superfan Mark Ronson (your dreams), Duran Duran are currently riding high on the road throwing out old hits and a healthy dose of newer surprises. Rodgers is even joining them on stage with his current incarnation of Chic (“Le Freak”) and newcomer Shamir. Expect to be blown away. —Billy Manes

DAVID SEDARIS

FROM HIS DRY TALES OF WORKING CHRISTMAS RETAIL (and all the mall-Santa that implies) to his

winking dissection of life’s trivialities – human or otherwise – memoirist and all-around personality David Sedaris recreated the tradition of self-satire. Somewhere between childhood fragility and quitting smoking abroad, you’ll fi nd the soul of a man who has bridged gaps quietly, even sardonically, making the gay part of life seem somehow less important than, well, the shared parts that we all live. If there’s a curio box, Sedaris is peering in it. If there’s an owl, he’s asking “who?”; a squirrel, he’ll fi nd the nuts. Most of the nuts are people, though, and that’s why Sedaris’ dry delivery in both print and in person has won him legions of fans. Also, his sister is Amy Sedaris, so you can’t just be jealous all day about those family picnics.

These days, Sedaris is fi lling opera houses abroad (he just stacked the Sydney Opera House in late January, for chrissakes) and making thinking people actually consider leaving their houses (and cats, and lattes) behind. Whether you consider him a humorist, an essayist, an author, an anthropologist or just that friend that you wish would show up at your house when your own mind is racing, Sedaris is defi nitely somebody to see, even for those outside the NPR set. You, too, will talk pretty someday! —Billy Manes
