2008 was one of the most productive years at

Mama’s Kitchen. We delivered 332,529 meals and

1,688 grocery bags, and we welcomed 4,299 visits at

Mama’s Pantry. In doing so, the lives of some 1,400

hunger-vulnerable, critically ill people were made

better. It was also one of the most difficult years due

to the economy’s downturn. According to President

Jimmy Carter, “we become not a melting pot but a

beautiful mosaic: different people, different beliefs,

different yearnings, different hopes, different dreams.”

Mama’s Kitchen is one such mosaic. As an inclusive,

nonjudgmental and affirming organization,

we are truly a mosaic and it is in this diversity

that we thrive, even in times of adversity.

The accomplishments of 2008 shared in this report

are a reflection of generous donations, wonderful

in-kind support, amazing volunteerism, exceptional

governance, a dedicated workforce, and consistent

honoring of the mission. The common thread in each

of these is people . . . remarkable people. In the words

of social reformer Alice Paul, “each of us puts in one

Jorge began service with Mama’s

Kitchen in February 2001 when his

Case Manager from Family Health

Center of San Diego referred him to

us. First diagnosed with AIDS in late

2000, Jorge also suffers from severe

depression and was homeless. In and

out of temporary housing, Jorge tells

us, “no matter how many times I move,

Mama’s always finds me.”

Diagnosed with AIDS in January

2004, Monique’s neuropathy severely

limited her ability to stand or move

about without assistance. She was

referred to Mama’s Kitchen in October

of 2004 by her Case Manager from

North County Health Services.

After many years as a Mama’s Kitchen

client, Monique passed away in

March of 2009.

When Joy took her two year old

grandson into her home to raise

in 1999, she never expected that

she would need help from anyone.

Diagnosed with breast cancer in

January 2008 in addition to a history

of congestive heart failure, Joy was

referred to Mama’s Kitchen by her

physician.

RObIN MOSS

A caterer by profession, Robin has

been donating her culinary talents

every Wednesday since October 1996.

Preparation of nearly 400 hot meals for

delivery to our clients is all in a day’s

work for Robin. “Coming to Mama’s

each week is like going home for me

— it’s family” says Robin.

ERNIE ANDRADE

Ernie and his wife Barbara began

helping prepare and package meals on

Wednesdays in January 2007. Shortly

thereafter, Ernie added Fridays to his

commitment to Mama’s and soon

became our lead volunteer, supervising

his fellow volunteers putting together

the weekend grocery bags. Ernie “…

takes pride in the group effort that

results in our clients receiving assistance

in meeting their daily nutritional needs.”

DUC NGUyEN

In April 2005 Duc began distributing

hot meals to his fellow volunteers on

Wednesdays. As a research scientist,

his attention to detail is valuable in this

number-critical task. Recently he also

began delivering meals to our clients

in North Park as well as helping with

special events. “Of all the activities I

have helped with, handing the meals

directly to the clients really brings

home to me the importance of our

service” says Duc.

DION bROWN

In February of 2007 Dion delivered his first meal. A faithful weekly delivery volunteer ever

since, Dion also served as a Photo Assistant at Mama’s Day 2007 and 2008 – taking names as

our photo crew documented the event. Continuing in both capacities, Dion’s vibrant personality

and caring nature make him a favorite of both clients and event guests alike.

Roger began delivering meals for

Mama’s Kitchen in May of 2003 and

shifted to the Front Desk in July of

2005. Logging over 400 hours of

service in 2008, Roger’s professional

SARA LUMPKINS

A new member of Mama’s Kitchen

family, Sara brought a wealth of

experience in volunteering from

Minnesota when she and her

husband relocated to San Diego.

On Wednesdays Sara helps prepare

and package meals at the Kitchen

and spends Thursdays at our Pantry

helping clients shop and keeping the

shelves stocked with nonperishable

items. Sara tells us that “…helping

people has been a life-long vocation

for me which brings great satisfaction.”

As a leader of Guys Like Us, Carlos

coordinates the members who have

collectively provided over 350 hours

of service at food drives and special

events. Whether selling opportunity

drawing tickets at Mama’s Day or

a great time and know that we are

helping the community” says Carlos.

CURT SWARTz

As the route coordinator for MBE-The UPS Store,

Curt schedules twenty-five company volunteers

who participate as delivery volunteers in pairs

each Wednesday. One of our first Adopt-a-Route

participants, they began delivering meals in 1996.

VICKIE RANDLE

Vickie joined Mama’s Kitchen’s family

as a volunteer in November 2005.

In December of that same year she

became a member of the staff as the

Office Coordinator. Speaking both

English and Spanish, she facilitates

the communication challenges of our

Spanish-speaking clients. A true friend

of Mother Earth, Vickie has instituted

many green concepts at the Kitchen

and is easily recognized driving her

electric car which she converted from

gas power herself.

SAM MORbIDELLI

Sam is the longest-serving employee of

Mama’s Kitchen. Since August 1995

he has been the Finance Manager.

Among his many duties, Sam is

responsible for the internal accounting

and cash flow here at the Kitchen. In

addition, Sam always volunteers to

wash the dishes on Thanksgiving Day!

RACHELLE CARVAJAL

Rachelle joined Mama’s Kitchen in

January 2001 on the line making

sandwiches for delivery to our

clients. Shortly thereafter she joined

the Special Events Committee just

in time for Mama’s Day 2001. A

Sales Representative for SeaWorld

San Diego, Rachelle now serves as a

member of our Board of Directors,

heads our Marketing Committee, and

will be spearheading Pie in the Sky

2009. Rachelle tells us that, “exceeding

our goal of number of pies sold in 2008

was a truly memorable moment in my

time with Mama’s.”

DON CAULFIELD

Over the years, Don has contributed

countless hours to helping Mama’s

Kitchen. He has chaired the Special

Events Committee for many years,

overseeing not only Mama’s Day but

also the annual Wine Tasting event

and Pie in the Sky, which began in

2005. But Don’s involvement has not

been limited to events – he has also

served on the organization’s Executive

Committee, which oversees all

activities of the Board, and has served

as a delivery driver. “Feeding people

who have AIDS is very important to

me. Mama’s Kitchen is a wonderful

organization, and we are still hopeful

that there will be a cure for AIDS and

diseases like cancer. Meanwhile, we do

everything we can to keep our clients

healthy, and I think that’s why so

many people like to volunteer with the

organization.”

DAWN TOL

Dawn is a Social Work Case Manager

at San Diego Hospice and the Institute

for Palliative Medicine. Working

exclusively with the HIV/AIDS

population, she refers prospective

clients to our Home Delivered Hot

Meal Program. While completing her

degree program, Dawn was a member

of the Development Department here

services to women affected by breast

cancer in San Diego County. “Mama’s

Kitchen provides a vital link to

nutritional services for our clients and

their families during a trying period”

says Nicolette.

RObIN AUbIN AND NELLy MEDINA

Robin, a Registered Nurse, has been

working at San Diego Hospice and

the Institute for Palliative Medicine

since January 2005. For the past year

she has worked closely with Nelly

Medinas, MSW, referring HIV/AIDS

clients to Mama’s Kitchen. Robin

tells us, “knowing our clients receive

nutritious meals from Mama’s Kitchen

for themselves and their children is a

great comfort and a crucial part of their

quality of life.” Nelly adds that, “in this

time of diminishing resources, that our

clients receive three meals a day, seven

days a week is very satisfying.”

Mama’s Kitchen works closely with dozens of social service and health care organizations

that refer their critically ill, hunger-vulnerable clients.

presenting sponsor for our annual bake

sale known as Pie in the Sky. They pro-

event, but host Pie pick-up locations

in about 20 of its San Diego County

Roxanne began helping prepare meals

on Thursdays at Mama’s Kitchen in

April of 1999. For Roxanne, helping

Mama’s Kitchen is a family affair in-

volving her two sons, Gregory and Sam,

as well as husband Ian. In addition

to giving of their time, the Wisenberg

Family is a generous financial supporter

of our mission. “Sharing with others is

one of the lessons we hope to pass on

to our boys” says Roxanne.

Since 1997, The Bravo Foundation has been a significant supporter of Mama’s

Kitchen. The Foundation has provided not only support for our Home Delivered

Hot Meals program, but also funding for Mama’s Kitchen’s efforts to outreach to

targeted communities within the County who may be underserved or unaware of

the availability of our organization’s services.

One of only a handful of foundations nationwide that specialize in helping the

Latino community, The Bravo Foundation’s support is reflective of the growing

numbers of persons in the San Diego Latino community who are affected by

HIV/AIDS and receive services from Mama’s Kitchen.

Over 700 guests enjoyed the 17th

Annual Mama’s Day, which was held

on May 9, 2008 at the Hyatt La Jolla.

70 local restaurants offered guests

delicious samplings of specialties

PIE IN THE SKy

Mama’s Pie in the Sky bake sale

mobilized hundreds of volunteers to

bake, sell and distribute holiday pies

in time for Thanksgiving celebrations.

The 2008 event broke all previous

records and in just nine weeks, over

3,600 pies were sold, a 23% increase

over the previous year. One hundred

percent of the $20 sales price for each

pie went to Mama’s Kitchen.

provided not only financial support

but its branch locations throughout

San Diego County as Pie distribution

sites. The bake sale kicked off with a

celebration hosted by the Hard Rock

Hotel San Diego, and San Diego’s

top bakers, caterers and chefs came

together to handcraft apple, pecan,

pumpkin and sugar-free apple pies

for the sale. Special thanks to Sycuan

Resort & Casino and SeaWorld for

their leadership in baking the pies,

and to Ascent Real Estate (“Top Sales

Team”) and volunteer Marion Perlman

(“Top Individual Seller”).

also encouraged to participate in

the evening’s Silent Auction and

Opportunity Drawing.

The event raised over $137,000

to help Mama’s Kitchen prepare

and deliver meals to hundreds of

San Diegans each day. Guests were

encouraged to continue helping

beyond the night of the event by

enrolling in the Bread and Butter

Club, Mama’s Kitchen’s monthly

recurring donations program.

WINE TASTING

AT bOURbON STREET

For all those who attended, sponsored

or volunteered at Mama’s Kitchen’s

13th Annual Wine Tasting Event,

there was no question that wine does

a heart good! The event was again

graciously hosted by Bourbon Street,

who welcomed more than 240 guests

there to sample wines donated by

Southern Wine & Spirits. Guests

were also treated to special hors

d’oeuvres and deserts donated by local

restaurants and caterers. Thanks to

proceeds from the ticket sales, and

generous contributions from Chuck

Ferrante of Bourbon Street and

Michael Skubish from Lei Lounge,

the event raised almost $20,000 for

Mama’s Kitchen.

bEN & JERRy’S FREE CONE DAy

Mama’s Kitchen was selected as the

recipient of all donations made during

April 2008’s “Free Cone Day” at Ben &

Jerry’s in Seaport Village. This national

event is hosted each spring by Ben &

Jerry’s as a way of offering thanks to the

ice cream company’s loyal customers,

and encourages giving to local charities.

TREE OF LIFE

Mama’s Kitchen organized the

17th Annual Tree of Life Lighting

Ceremony on December 1st, 2008 at

Village Hillcrest. This annual World

AIDS Day event commemorates

those affected by HIV/AIDS, as well

as recognizes the ongoing leadership

efforts made to end the epidemic.

News was joined by San Diego Mayor

Jerry Sanders, other elected officials

and hundreds of San Diegans.

The Ceremony included a candlelight

vigil led by Terry Cunningham, Chief

of HIV, STD and Hepatitis Branch of

the San Diego County Department of

Public Health, and the evening’s special

guests included Congresswoman

Susan Davis, Councilmember Toni

Atkins, and Councilmember Elects

Carl DeMaio and Todd Gloria. The

Gay Men’s Chorus provided holiday

music as the Tree of Life was decorated

with ornaments personalized to honor

those who have been affected by AIDS.

The Tree of Life remained on display

at Village Hillcrest during the holiday

season.
