Year 3 Home Learning Week Beginning 20 th April 2020 We hope you are all well and have had a wonderful week. We have loved seeing all of your home learning and hearing all about the activities you have been doing with your families. Keep up the great work and take care of each other. Team 3 Deliberate Practice Daily Activities: 1) Reading (on your own or to an adult). Don’t forget to record your reading in your reading log. You can always share what you have read with us on class dojo – keep earning those reading at home dojos! 2) Practise spellings on Spelling Shed. 3) Aim to spend at least 20 minutes practising your times tables. This could be using Times Tables Rockstars. English Watch this link to hear the story of The Great Kapok Tree being read out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gw0arFtHeVw . Once you have heard it through, play it a second time. This time, as it is playing, take on the different characters (maybe your family could be some of the different characters too!) and act out the story, also saying the speech of your character. Think specifically about how the animals would move, using your body effectively, and how you could use your voice to sound like that animal (for example, speaking very slowly for the sloth or having a high pitched voice for the bee). Now we would like you to choose two of the animals from the story and write a short, descriptive paragraph, including dialogue, for each of them, explaining how they move and how they speak. Don’t forget to use your inverted commas (speech marks) around the speech! For example: Sneakily, the boa constrictor slithered along the branch, wrapping himself around the tree trunk. “Senhor, this is a tree of miracles. It is my home, where generations of my ancestors have lived. Do not chop it down,” hissed the snake into the man’s ear. With a flick of his tail, he slid away.

Watch this link to hear the story of The Great Kapok Tree being read out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gw0arFtHeVw . Once you have heard it through, play it a second time. This time, as it is playing, take on the different characters (maybe your family could be some of the different characters too!) and act out the story, also saying the speech of your character. Challenge!

Can you choose an animal which doesn’t appear in the book and write a short paragraph for them – you can decide what they would say to the woodcutter!

Further challenge!

Weekly Learning – Geometry

Objective – To recognise and describe the properties of 2D and 3D shapes

Activity One – Properties of 2D Shapes.

Watch these videos to remind yourself about the properties of common 2D shapes.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDrhL0g1Es8https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9OlcnbZ3uO8

Then have a go and making these 2D shapes from an A4 piece of paper. Name each shape and note down its properties in the middle of each one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qy0ClLiv8e0 How many sides does it have? How many vertices (corners)? Which types of angles are at each vertex (acute, obtuse, right)? If you find folding them tricky, have a go at drawing each one instead and labelling the properties.

Activity two – Recognising and sorting 3D Shapes (prisms and pyramids)

Watch this video about the main two types of 3D shapes – prisms and pyramidshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWiOD8DMzP0

Then have a go at this interactivity online:http://resources.hwb.wales.gov.uk/VTC/sorting_3d_shapes/eng/Introduction/SortShapesPop.htm

Look at these websites and try making your own 3D shapes out of paper or sticks and playdough if you have some. Or even sticks and marshmallows!

1. Making 3D paper shapes

Print out these 3D shape nets and have a go at making them. If you don’t have a printer you could try drawing your own net.https://www.math-salamanders.com/3d-geometric-shapes.html

Science

Activity: Parts of a plant

If your parents are happy, pick a flower on your daily walk or from your garden. (Flowers that are easy to dissect are lilies, tulips and daffodils. However, it could be as simple as a daisy.)

Next, gently pull your flower apart (dissect it) and place it onto a piece of paper. Make sure you do this firmly but carefully, so that you don’t break any of its different parts. You may want to use tweezers to help you to do this. If you have access to a magnifying glass, you could have a look at each piece individually. As you are dissecting it, think about the names of the different parts of your flower and their jobs. Here are a few links that may help you with this:https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/science-ks1-ks2-ivys-plant-workshop-the-anatomy-of-the-flower/zjmhkmnhttps://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zpxnyrd/articles/z3wpsbk (stop at 33 seconds)

Finally, once dissected, write a label for each part of your flower neatly next to it on your piece of paper.

Challenge! Can you write a short description about the different jobs of each part of your flower?
