Neenton - March 2019

Dear Members and Friends

Welcome to another fun-packed year with the Wheatland Pony Club!

The winter has been fairly mild, but the added complications of equine flu have put paid to a few adventures - however most of us have still managed to get out and have some fun!

The Achievement Badge sessions have been very popular, with lots of topics being covered. Thank you to Hannah for running these and thank you also to Harriet for providing the venue and refreshments (including the most delicious flapjacks ever!) Thanks to Alex too for the amazing rider first aid session held recently for our members. Everything from dealing with a minor wound through to doing CPR was covered in a fun and very informative way.

Hannah has more fab sessions planned over the next few months including a Road Rider theory day in May when she will be covering ALL parts of the syllabus from theory through to practise and this will be followed up by a mock test, and if you are ready, the actual test too - book in online if you wish to attend. Please be aware that the road rider test is compulsory if you wish to take some other tests – please see table as follows:

Louise has been very busy sorting the new programme and has also arranged for some test training sessions during May for those who wish to take their next test - thank you Louise! Kelly and Louise will be covering all tests from E up to C+ at every session. The C and C plus tests will take place on 7th June and many of you will need to obtain the road rider before you can be awarded these. The E, D and D plus tests may also be on 7 th June, depending on numbers, and it may be that you need to take your mini road rider test first.

Anyone wishing to know more about the Road Rider test can you please contact Hannah, for those wanting to know more about tests from E thought to C plus contact Louise, and for those interested in B test or above please contact me – contact information is attached to this newsletter

Initial details about the Summer Camps follow. Camps are the highlight of the pony club year, and are a great place to cement those important lifelong friendships and to have fun with your ponies. There are several hours of riding each day, along with stable management sessions and also other fun activities.

Juniors come in daily but their ponies usually stay over. Some parents choose to travel each day, but many prefer to camp at a local site nearby. Caroline and Ruth are running Junior Camp and will have further information on any nearby camping facilities in due course - please contact them directly if you wish to know more. Junior Camp is suitable for all ages and abilities from lead rein upwards.

Seniors (aged over 11 years on 1st January) usually camp over for the duration of their camp so they need to be able to look after their ponies and tack up unaided. They usually bring or share tents and food is provided for them. Please contact Vicky if you wish to know more about Senior Camp.

Camp reply slips need to be in quite promptly to that we know numbers and can book the correct amount of coaches. Spaces are limited only by the number of available stables at Bow House and places are allocated on a first come first served basis. Please return your camp booking form by the end of March - no bookings will be processed without the non-refundable £50 deposit (also due before the end of March) and balances must be paid in full by the end of May.

Other activities on the new programme include an Easter Fun Day at Upper Overton with Caroline Williamson (lots of fun activities are planned and there’s the possibility of chocolate too!) - Caroline is also running regular shooting training - optional interval training with Vicky Morris available if you wish. There is also a dismounted session at Harrington with Beth to improve rider position and balance.

Our annual Easter showjumping competition takes place on 15th April at Rodbaston (schedule attached). This is an important fund raiser for our branch and it would be great to have many of our members there competing – also any offers of help on the day from parents and friends would be very much appreciated by your hard-working committee! Please contact Vicky for further information, to enter and/or to offer your services as a volunteer – thank you

We are already amidst the Area competition season. We had 2 teams competing at the Area Quiz on 2 Feb - both teams were placed and the Wheatland also got first prize for the branch display – well done Nancy, Daisy, Sasha, Isabel, Pippa, Ellie, Emma and Layla!

Next day the Area Triathletes were out, again with fab results! Well done to Oscar, Georgina, Alice, Hannah M, Aaron, Amy, Rachel M, Rebs, Lucy, Isabella, Isla, Natalie, Hannah W, James, Tamsin, Emily S and Harriet W.

Also in February Amy, Emma and Lara competed at the Dengie Area Dressage competition – well done girls for qualifying for, and also for representing our branch at, this event.

The Dengie Showjumping Area finals are on 24 March and we have several members qualified to compete there – good luck to you all – and if anyone still has to have their qualifying cards signed please get in touch with me asap as entries close on 16 March!

The Wheatland are sending teams to the Area Horse and Pony Care competition on 16 May – good luck everyone!

Page 4: branches.pcuk.org · Web viewLouise has been very busy sorting the new programme and has also arranged for some test training sessions during May for those who wish to take their

Emily has been holding training sessions at the Hurst for the mounted games riders over the past few weeks – some on foot, some on bikes (eek!), and others on ponies. Teams have been out a couple of times already this season with great results and we wish you the best of luck at any upcoming events and also at the Area Mounted Games competition on 19 May

The Area showjumping is at Solihull on 22nd and 23rd June. Saturday is for the Regional Qualifiers (80cm) and there will also be other classes which can be used as a warm up (or just go along and compete at the lower heights anyway – classes start quite low and go up to around 80cm) The Novice, Intermediate and Open classes (90, 100 and 110 cm) will run on the Sunday.

Area Eventing is on 6th July at Offchurch Bury for Regional Qualifiers, Novice and Intermediate (80, 90 and 100cm) with the Open (110cm) taking place on the following day.

Tetrathlon is the following weekend at Ettington (13th and 14th July), Dressage at Berriewood the weekend after (20th July) and Pony Racing wraps up the season at Dunstall on 22nd September.

If anyone is interested in competing at area and haven’t already been in touch to register their interest please get in touch asap as training sessions are already being planned. (Please be aware that for Area Competitions, Horse/Pony and Rider must have attended a minimum of 3 Rallies since the previous 1st July to be eligible to represent the Branch - any sessions not specified as a ‘Rally’ do not count – further details are in the rule books for 2019 which are available online here - http://www.pcuk.org/index.php/dcs_information/rule_books/ )

There have been a few questions raised about Equine Flu. The Pony Club is currently following BEF guidelines -

Please note that following the latest advice from the BEF concerning equine flu many venues used by The Pony Club require horses and ponies to have had a booster in the last six months. Please make sure that you are up to date and if in doubt please consult your local vet. The Pony Club vaccination rule states that no pony may attend a competition if it has had a booster in the previous 6 days so timing is key. We will be checking passports.

The British Equestrian Federation (BEF) continues to closely monitor the equine flu outbreak and notes the latest update from the Animal Health Trust that there have been positive tests in many counties

Throughout this outbreak the BEF has urged equine owners to ensure their vaccination records are up to date. If it has been longer than six months since their last vaccination we strongly recommend discussing a booster with their veterinary surgeon.

The BEF continues to urge all competition and training event organisers to check the equine ID passports of all horses to make sure they comply with vaccination rules.

A number of event organisers have put extra precautionary measures in place – as they are perfectly entitled to. The BEF continues to remind all participants that they should check venue requirements before they set out.

Note that it is a legal requirement for passports to accompany all horses and ponies when travelling but please also be aware of the flu policy for the venue you wish to visit - you may not be allowed in, especially if your vaccination records are not as required.

Page 5: branches.pcuk.org · Web viewLouise has been very busy sorting the new programme and has also arranged for some test training sessions during May for those who wish to take their

There does not appear to be a ‘one size fits all’ policy so please be mindful of this, especially if you plan to do areas and camps – it could be that your annual booster may have to be brought forward quite considerably to comply with any 6 month or 7 day rules!

All venues will have their own policies and it is your responsibility to make sure you comply with them Bow House, for instance, are insisting that all ponies have had a minimum of the first 2 vaccinations and that any subsequent booster has been done within the last 6 months but not in the past 7 days. Please remember when checking your passports that camp is towards the end of July so the last booster has to be after the end of January, but not within the 7 days leading up to the camp start date.

I have attached some information on the 90th birthday celebrations of the pony club. It would be nice to do something ‘special’ to celebrate this special year – if you have any thoughts or ideas please get in touch!

The programme follows but more dates will be added in due course – these will appear on the website and also on our members only facebook page so please check these regularly too

I look forward to seeing you all at a branch event or competition very soon

Best wishes

Dawn
