Guided Reading - Ireland & World War OneWith the outbreak of World War One in August 1914, the British government agreed that the introduction of “Home Rule” would be put on hold until the war was over. In the north of Ireland, Edward Carson, the founder of the Protestant Ulster Volunteers and first man to sign the Ulster Solemn

League and Covenant, volunteered the UVF to fight in the British army. In the south, in the interests of unity, John Redmond also pledged his largely Catholic Irish Volunteers to the fight. This caused a bitter split in the Irish Volunteers – some 105,000 were loyal to Redmond and enlisted to fight in the war with Britain, becoming known as the National Volunteers. The remaining 12,000 members kept the name Irish Volunteers under the leadership of Eoin MacNeill, a professor of History at University College Dublin. The position of the Irish Volunteers was that Ireland should remain neutral. For John Redmond, and his Irish Parliamentary Party (IPP), the best outcome for the war would be…a short war and a victory for the National Volunteers. They would have shown their loyalty and would be honoured for their service; “Home Rule”.The Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) and the National Volunteers fought bravely in the war. The 36th Ulster Division was made up of men from the UVF and fought in the opening offensive of the Battle of the Somme. They lost 5,000 men in the first two days. The National Volunteers fought in the 10th Division, with over 9,000 killed or wounded. The National Volunteers also fought in the 16th (Irish) Division, who were practically wiped out.

Why did Public Opinion Change on the Easter Rising 1916?

Page 7“After the rebels’ surrender, some of the prisoners being marched

away through the streets of Dublin by the British were jeered

at by the locals.”

“The secret nature of the court-martial trials, the firing squads at dawn and the burial in unmarked

graves of those executed Rising leaders had the opposite effect to that intended by the British. The executions of the gravely ill Connolly and Plunkett (just hours after his marriage) added weight to the public anger. There was

great anger at the execution of Francis Sheehy-Skeggington, a pacifist who had wanted to stop the looting of Dublin shops. Furthermore, British Army troops had broken into local houses in North King

Street and shot or bayoneted 16 innocent civilians during Easter Week.”
