Welcome Welcome to school year 2016-17. We especially welcome our new families and staff at Grace Lutheran School this year. Our vision statement says we are to be about “Connecting People to Jesus.” That’s because it’s only through faith in Jesus that we can find true peace and joy for life today and the assurance of life in heaven after we die. You can be sure that the students and families of Grace Lutheran School will be pointed time and time again during this school year to their Friend and Savior, Jesus. As we make connections with new families and reconnect with our returning families may we share Jesus and His love with one another. May God bless this year together as we grow in grace. FOUNDATIONS

Our PassionGrace Lutheran Church & School is committed to the growth of the Lord’s kingdom by

developing confident, caring disciples in Jesus Christ and engaging all God’s people at Grace in Grace Connections:

•People to Christ...through focus on the Word in dynamic, joyful worship of our Lord and in thorough Christian education. •People to People...by strengthening the family of Grace through fellowship and compassionate service to others. •People to Community...by embracing our community through intentional outreach and active support of human care needs. •People to the World...by equipping all of God’s people at Grace to be effective witnesses of Christ while at home or away.

What We Believe

As members of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod we believe God’s Word, as we find it in the Bible, to be inspired by God Himself and without error.   In the Bible, God reveals His plan for the salvation of mankind (Gospel) and also His expectations for us as His people (Law).

We believe that God created us and all things.  Even though God’s original plan was for all people to be His children and live with Him in eternal happiness, mankind chose instead to rebel against God, to determine his own ways, and solve his own problems.  As a result, children today are born into a world of trouble, pain, and death.  While all people, including children, bear the guilt of their fallen condition, God in His mercy provided a solution to mankind’s dilemma.  That solution is found in the atoning work of Jesus Christ who took the punishment of all people’s sins upon Himself and died on a cross (the wages of sin is death - Romans 6:23a).  Then, He rose from His burial tomb, demonstrating victory over all sin and death.  Today, He promises that same victory to all who would simply put their trust in Him and His solution (the free gift of God is eternal life - Romans 6:23 b).  God calls people into a relationship with Him through His Holy Spirit.  God’s Spirit is responsible for keeping us in the faith as well as leading and enlightening us by means of His Holy Word.

We believe that God’s Law (what He expects) serves the purpose of identifying sin in our lives and shows us what God would identify as good works for our life in Christ.   The Law commands good works of thought, word, and deed.  It also condemns and punishes sin.  We believe the Gospel is the good news of our salvation in Jesus Christ.  Through the Gospel (what God does for us) God gives forgiveness, faith,

life, and the power to please Him with good works.   We believe the Law shows man his sinful condition and his hopeless state before God.  Once man recognizes his condition he is ready for the Gospel which is the power of God to change lives and rescue man from his sinful condition.  Then having received by faith His Gospel message, it is our joyful response to live our lives for Him.

Philosophy

We believe that the mission of the whole Christian Church is to share God's love and to properly equip His people for service.

We believe that the home is the basic unit of the Christian Church and that parents are to equip children to live and grow as people of God.  We also believe that through our school, the Christian congregation can assist parents in carrying out this task.  As a result the school does not take the place of the home but rather cooperates with the home.

We believe that the primary purpose of our school is to teach the Word of God through example and instruction.  Christian education calls for a commitment to Christ, practiced and experienced in thought, word, and deed.

We  believe   that   those   called   to   impart   Christian   education   are   committed   to   this  ministry.    We encourage all parents and students to join with us in forming a Christian community working and living together, in love and forgiveness, at the foot of the cross.

We believe that Christian education encompasses the total life of the child including spiritual, social, academic, physical, and emotional needs.

We  believe   that   our   school   provides   an   environment   for   Christ-centered   instruction,   imparted  by teachers who love their Lord and Savior.

We believe that the proper use of the Word of God as it speaks to us in Law and Gospel is a primary step toward making Christian education properly Christian.   For more on the use of Law and Gospel, see separate article under “What We Believe.”

We believe that our school imparts quality education. All subjects are taught in the light of God's Word. Our philosophy is determined by the theology of the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod.   See separate article under, “What We Believe.”

We believe that Christian education has an eternal effect. The assignment is great but the power of the Holy Spirit is greater.  We believe that the greatest power in heaven and on earth supports this mission.

We believe students learn best:

· with an incremental approach that builds on a firm foundation of past knowledge and experience.

· in an environment where it is safe to take a risk.

· when teachers challenge students at their ability level and respect each child’s learning style.

· by active participation and through application of skills learned.

· when a high level of accountability and responsibility are expected with regard to student work.

·Provide opportunities for interaction between the church, the school, and the community.

·Teach students to be good stewards of God’s many gifts.

·Equip students to share their Christian faith so others may know Christ as Savior; and to encourage and build up one another in the faith.

Christmas ServiceStudents are involved annually in presenting the Christmas story to friends and relatives.

The school has made arrangements to provide a 72 hour water supply for each child. In the event of a disaster your child will remain at school under the supervision of the staff until called for by the parent or the adult specified on the emergency form.

Stranger Danger PreparednessDue to the world we live in, a drill was created to help children be ready for someone who might come into our school without permission.  We practice this drill formally twice a year.  The teachers will have a plan that they will discuss with their students.

Earthquake Preparedness

Because we live near a fault line, the possibility of an earthquake is an ever present danger. Teachers will periodically have earthquake drills with their class in conjunction with the rest of the school.

Fire DrillsFire drills are held periodically throughout the year.  Specific directions for the classroom will be given by each teacher.   All students and staff must leave the building during a fire drill.   Fire extinguishers and apparatus in the school building meet current building code standards.

Parent Involvement

What Does Grace Expect of Parents?

As a parent, you show interest in your child's spiritual, mental, emotional, physical, aesthetic, moral, and social welfare by:

·Becoming better informed of what your child is taught so that you may assist in his/her education.

·Offering suggestions and concerns first to your child's teacher, then to the principal, and finally to a member of the School Board.

·Showing support for your child's teacher, recognizing the teacher as being God's representative.

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Scheduled conferences with parents and teachers are held prior to the start of school, at the end of first quarter, and during the third quarter.   Please contact your child’s teacher should additional conferences be needed.

 Problem Solving Guidelines

Grace Lutheran School believes in open and active communication between parents and the school.  We know that good, healthy, two-way communication is the key to understanding problem situations.

In   order   to   assure   communication   occurs   in   an   orderly  manner;  we   have   adopted   the   following guidelines:

  A. Concerns about a classroom procedure.

1.  Contact the school office to leave a message for the teacher to make an appointment with you.     If   the parent/teacher  conference does not  resolve  the  concern,  the parent  or teacher may request a joint conference with the school principal.

2.   Upon request, the principal will arrange for a conference to include the parent, teacher, and principal at the earliest possible date convenient to all.

2.  In the event that a hearing is granted, the concerned party will be notified of the time of the hearing.

3.  In order to protect the privacy of our students and staff, the hearing will not be open to the public.   The following will meet in executive session: the concerned party, members of the School Board, the school principal, and the pastor.

4.  An allotted amount of time, to be determined by the chairperson of the School Board, will be given for the concerned party to present its concerns.

 Service hours required:

· for families of students in grades Kg.-8, a MINIMUM of 20 service hours per academic year.

· for single parent families of students in grades 1-8, a MINIMUM of 12  service hours per academic year.

· for families of students in preschool, a MINIMUM of 8 service hours per academic year.

While your involvement is preferred, we recognize that some families’  circumstances may not allow fulfillment of this service hour commitment. In those cases, it is necessary to make arrangements for service in another specifically designated area.   The interest survey prepared each year lists all service areas.   If you wish to do service hours in an area not listed, this must first be cleared with the school principal.  An assessment of $10.00 per hour in lieu of unfulfilled parent support time will be levied.

Service hours are tallied semi-annually and statement information is sent home.  Towards the end of the year a billing is sent for incomplete parent support hours.

It  is  the responsibility of each family to seek opportunities to fulfill  their service hour commitment. These hours should be recorded on their family record outside the school office.  ALL service hours need to be recorded for the accuracy of school records. This will enable the school to evaluate accurately the number of hours needed to sustain current programs and anticipate future needs.

All schedules and announcements regarding the Parent Support Program are included in our monthly newsletter, Grace Notes and in the weekly notes.

Notification of Changes

Parents are required to update their address, telephone numbers (home, work or cell) and other family information. Please make any changes in medical records, or any other essential information needed for the school records and student safety with the school office.

Phone Tree

Grace has established a phone tree to help with communication.  If your phone number should change, please notify the school office or teacher.  The following guidelines have been established to provide for the proper use of the phone tree.

1.  The teacher or principal is the only person to determine when the phone tree will be implemented,           and for what purpose.

2.  Parents should inform the teacher or school office of any phone number changes.

3.  Teachers will keep the phone tree updated and will supply coordinators with the most current copy.

Foundations of Faith Classes

All parents not members of Grace Lutheran Church are invited to attend these classes.    Classes are designed to teach the doctrines of the Lutheran faith.  Participants will become more familiar with the religious instruction their children are receiving at Grace Lutheran School.

 Policies and Procedures

Absences, Tardies, and Illnesses

School attendance is mandated by the laws of the State of Utah.  In order to receive the greatest benefit, each child must attend school regularly and punctually.  School achievement is directly related to regular attendance.  In addition, the importance that parents place on education speaks loudly to their children.  Absences and tardies disrupt the educational process and hinder a child’s probability of success.  Absences for reasons other than illness or emergency situations should be avoided.  Appointments should be scheduled outside of school time whenever possible.  When a student must be absent, she/he is responsible for making up missed work in accordance with published school policy.

When students are absent from school, parents are to call the school office before 9:00 AM to notify the school of the absence.  The student is to have work made up in the same number of days s/he was absent plus one day.

The school discourages parents from scheduling vacations and trips on school days.  When a pre-planned absence must occur, teachers should be notified as soon as possible about the planned absence.  Teachers, given sufficient notice, will attempt to gather work for the student in advance.  Please understand that there may be some work which cannot be given to the student until s/he returns.  Students are responsible for checking with the teacher on their return and making sure all required work is completed.  If a student is given work in advance, the expectation is that the work will be completed no later than two days after the student returns to school.

If the number of absences exceeds 10 in a semester or 20 in a year, the student may not be advanced to the next grade.

A full-day student is considered absent for a half day if he/she misses more than 30 minutes of school.  A full-day student is considered absent for a full day if he/she misses more than 4 hours of school.  Students in pre-school or kindergarten are considered absent if they miss more than 30 minutes of

school time.

Because it is important that students learn the value of punctuality, and because tardiness is disruptive to the teaching and learning process, we ask that students arrive at school early enough to be in the classroom at the time school begins.  Students who are not in the classroom at the time school begins are considered tardy.  If a student is tardy, the parent or driver is to come to the office with the student to sign in.

 Administration and Organization

Grace Lutheran School is owned, operated, and supported solely by Grace Lutheran Church, a member of   the   Lutheran   Church--Missouri   Synod.     The   policies   governing   Grace   Lutheran   School   are administered by the School Board which is elected by voting members of the congregation.  The policies of the School Board are carried out by the principal, who with the assistance of the staff, supervises the school's daily operation.

Admission Age Requirement

Students must reach the following ages on or before September 1 in order to be eligible for admission to the class:

Preschool 3: 3 years old

Preschool 4: 4 years old

Kindergarten: 5 years old

Anti-Bullying Bullying goes against everything in the Bible. We are called to kindness. We are asked to be hospitable and look out for one another. So, turning on another person does little to demonstrate God's love to others.

Micah 6:8b “What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God”

Page 17: Web view · 2017-04-03Welcome. Welcome to school year 2016-17. We especially welcome our new families and staff at Grace Lutheran School this year. Our

Grace Lutheran Church and School has a ZERO tolerance for bullying in any form. Those students found to have participated in bullying and, particularly, persistent bullying will be subject to discipline, up to and including suspension or expulsion.

Definitions of bullying:

Physical Bullying: Physical contact with the intent to cause harm

(hitting, punching, biting, kicking, stealing, damaging another’s belongings)

Verbal Bullying: Causing emotional pain, based on personal perception

(name-calling, offensive remarks, intimidation, offensive jokes, threats, berating another person)

Reactive Bullying: One person who coaxes others into harassing an individual

Cyber bullying: Using electronic media/devices to harass others (email, texting, social networking sites, blogs)

Exclusion/Social Alienation: Purposeful social isolation of individuals (spreading rumors, talking badly about others, convincing others to not interact with certain people)

Shunning/Social Exclusion: Shunning happens when a group builds its identity by keeping an individual out and attacking this person’s reputation. Sometimes the group will taunt the individual, other times they intentionally act like the victim simply is not present. Usually one person leads the shunning process, but others in the group actively participate or passively let it happen.

Normal Peer Activity:

17

Page 18: Web view · 2017-04-03Welcome. Welcome to school year 2016-17. We especially welcome our new families and staff at Grace Lutheran School this year. Our

Cliques: In the social sciences, a clique is a group of peers who interact with each other more regularly and intensely than others in the same setting. Interacting with cliques is part of normal social development regardless of gender, ethnicity, or popularity.

Cliques are discouraged; however, children naturally gravitate to those who have similar interests. We at Grace will monitor these groups to ensure bullying does not happen to those outside of the clique, nor to those in the clique.

Groups of Friends: These are peer groups that naturally develop because students feel supported and welcomed because of their similar interests. These groups can form around sports, clubs, music, books, TV shows or movies. Students will often move from group to group depending on their interests at the time. Over time some of the students will grow close and others will realize that their interests have changed and they will drift away from old peers. Groups of friends tend to be supportive of one another, quirks and all. Unlike cliques, groups of friends do not dictate that their friends conform to certain standards. People are free to be themselves within the group.

We, at Grace, view friendship groups as healthy and necessary for normal social development. These groups of friends are free to have social gatherings outside of the school without feeling obligated to include others from their class. It is expected and hoped that discussion about such activities would be sensitive to the possible hurt feelings of those not included.

Bicycles

Upon arriving on school grounds, students who ride their bicycles will  walk  them to the designated bicycle rack.  They are to walk them off school grounds at dismissal. Bicycle riding is not allowed on the school grounds during school hours or during arrival or dismissal times.

19

Page 20: Web view · 2017-04-03Welcome. Welcome to school year 2016-17. We especially welcome our new families and staff at Grace Lutheran School this year. Our

Students who ride their bicycles to school should park them in the designated area. Bicycles should not be left on the sidewalks or by the doors.  All bicycles should be locked.

In the interest of safety, we encourage all bike riders to wear their helmets.

Calendar

The school  year   follows the traditional  school  calendar.    Reminders  of  observed holidays and early dismissals are included in the school newsletter. The calendar may also be accessed through on the website gracesandy.org.

Cell Phones

While we do not see the regular use of cell phones at school to be a necessity, some circumstances may warrant their use. Our rules for cell phone use are as follows:

· Student cell phones are not to be seen or heard in the building—they are to be kept in a backpack in the hallway during the entire school day (this includes lunch and recess.)

· A cell phone may be used with teacher permission after school only.

· Students  staying  after  school   for  sports  events,  Kids’  Place,  or  other  school   functions  must  obtain permission from a staff member before using a cell phone.

· Cell phones seen or heard during the school day will be confiscated and returned to a parent with instructions not to allow it back at school for the remainder of the year.

As you can see from these guidelines—if cell phone use is necessary—the student must adhere strictly to these guidelines. One violation results in losing this privilege for the year.

Detentions Detentions will be served for work not turned in and behavioral issues.  These will be served during the school day under the direction of the principal or teachers.

Discipline

Grace Lutheran School recognizes that all children are created by God and redeemed by our Lord Jesus Christ.  Unfortunately, even the redeemed child of God falls back into sin and does not always conform to the will of God.

Therefore,  when  it  becomes necessary,  Christian discipline will  be  administered  in  accordance  with

20

Page 21: Web view · 2017-04-03Welcome. Welcome to school year 2016-17. We especially welcome our new families and staff at Grace Lutheran School this year. Our

Scriptural principles in an attempt to restore the child to a proper relationship with God.  The Holy Spirit through repentance and forgiveness enables the child to change his/her lifestyle.

  Corporal punishment is NOT used.

  The following principles provide guidance:

· Students come to Grace to receive an education.

· Students have the right to receive their education unhindered by disruptive students.

· Teachers act in place of parents.

· The final responsibility for the discipline of the child rests with the parent.   "Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord." Ephesians 6:4

Grace Lutheran School applies Law and Gospel to all aspects of life and learning.  Students are taught the demands of God's Law and are comforted by the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The following infractions will result in detention, suspension, or expulsion from school:

·Possession or use of alcohol, tobacco, or other controlled substances

·Immoral sexual conduct

·Threat or use of physical violence

·Possession or use of fireworks, explosives, or weapons (including knives)

·Unlawful activity, e.g. stealing

·Reprehensible conduct that discredits the school and/or the Christian faith

·Serious and willful destruction of property

·Verbal assault including abusive/profane language

·Willful disobedience

·Chronic overdue and incomplete work (see incomplete homework policy)

In the event that a student shows repeated misbehavior, causes serious disruption to the normal class routine, shows serious rebellion against a teacher, or causes serious harm to persons or property, the

following policy will be implemented.

The principal, at his/her discretion, will suspend the student for not less than one day nor more than three days for the first serious offense.  The suspension will be "in house" (served at school) or “out of school”, at the principal’s discretion.  Any unexcused absence on a suspension day will result in a double suspension.

Students serving a suspension will not take part in any class activities during the suspension period.  The student will be counted absent for the day(s) of the suspension and all make-up work is due before returning to class.

Before the student is allowed to return to the classroom, a meeting with the parents or guardians, the student, teacher, and principal must be scheduled.

The second suspension during the school year will result in a meeting with a School Board member, the student, his/her parents or guardians, the teacher, and the principal.   The purpose of this meeting will be to determine if expulsion is necessary. Students will not be allowed back into the classroom until this meeting is concluded satisfactorily.

The School Board will decide in all matters of expulsion.

If in the judgment of the principal, the misbehavior of a student warrants expulsion, he/she may call for a special School Board meeting.

The   purpose   of   suspensions/expulsions  is   to   provide   a   method   for   handling   serious   disciplinary problems.  While necessary disciplinary action will take place, the desired outcome is for the student to come to repentance and for the Gospel of forgiveness to be given.
