STUDENT USE OF MOBILE PHONES

SCHOOL POLICY

Rationale:

It is recognised that in these days

of modern communication it may

be desirable or necessary for a student to have in

their possession a mobile phone. However, it is

also recognised that these devices can be a

distraction for the students themselves and for

other students. This policy is not written to

encourage students of primary school age to have

a mobile phone in their possession, but to set

guidelines for the student if these phones are in

their possession at school.

Aim:

To ensure that mobile phones are used correctly

and in a manner that complies with school

requirements.

Implementation:

Parents or guardians must seek

written permission from the

Principal if they wish their child to

bring a mobile phone to school.

Burwood Heights Primary accepts

no responsibility whatsoever for

mobile phones whilst in the

possession of students at school.

Mobile phones will not be

permitted to be taken on camps,

excursions or to sporting activities.

Once on the school property,

mobile phones must be switched

off at all times.

The student must leave the mobile

phone at the school office. Once

left with the Bursar the phone will

only be returned to the student or to

the parent at the end of the school

day.

Students misusing mobile phones

within the school property or

causing a nuisance with them may

have their permission to have them

at school, revoked by the principal.

Students who bring a mobile to

school without prior approval will

have them stored at the office until

collected by their parent or

guardian.

REMINDER

PERSONAL GOODS BROUGHT TO SCHOOL

AT OWNER’S RISK

It is timely to remind you once again of the

Department’s policy about bringing personal items

to school.

Personal property is often brought to school by

parents, staff, students and visitors. This can

include mobile phones, calculators, bicycles, toys,

sporting equipment and even to such items as cars

parked on school premises.

The Department of Education and Early

Childhood Development does not hold insurance

for personal property brought to

schools (students, parents, visitors

and staff) and it will generally not

pay for any loss or damage to

such property.

PREP 2014 ENROLMENTS AND STUDENT

NUMBERS

It is that time of year when schools are preparing

for the following year and student numbers are

critical to the school’s staffing structure.

If you are aware of any families who may live

near you and have not enrolled, would you please

advise them of this timeline.

If your child will not be attending Burwood

Heights Primary School next year would you

please advise us of this?

Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

NO HAT, NO PLAY

Coming up shortly is school hat time again.

From Monday 2nd

September, all students are

required to wear hats outside during

recess and lunchtime. Any student

without a school hat, will need to sit in

the designated area. If you know your

child has lost his/her hat now is the

time to purchase one. Please make sure

your child’s hat is clearly named!

HEAD LICE

Instances of head lice being

present have been reported. I do

ask all parents to be vigilant in

checking their child’s hair and

taking appropriate course of action

to prevent the spread of these pesky critters.

Don’t wait until your child is obviously scratching

his/her head. Check before this.

If you require any assistance with this matter

please contact the office.

CLASS FORMATION

The process for student placement for 2014 will

commence in a few weeks as staffing becomes

clearer. We aim to have well-balanced classes of

students that take into account each student’s

social, emotional and academic development and

friendship groups.

Class compositions are based on Level groupings

(Level One – Prep; Level Two – Grades One and

two; Level Three – Grades Three and Four and

Level Four – Grades Five and Six.)

We endeavour to make optimum use of prior

knowledge teachers, parents and others have of

each student prior to class placement.

This is a lengthy process and entails much

discussion and sharing of information between

staff.

If there is any information you consider

important for the school to be aware of, please

put it in writing and return to me before

Monday 7th

October, 2013.

KITCHEN NOTES

The Level Four students have been

learning about and cooking dough

this term. Breads and dough’s are a

staple of many international cuisines

and are enjoyed the world over. In

Italy, it commonly takes the form of

pizza and this fortnight we’ve

enjoyed cooking and eating two

types. Pizza Bianca, or Blanca as it’s

also known refers to any pizza which

is “blank” or without a tomato sauced

base. The Pizza Bianca we indulged in

is a simple dough topped with olive

oil, garlic, sea salt and fresh

rosemary. Delicious! It’s very simple

to make, but remember to allow an

extra 60 minutes for your dough to

rise prior to cooking.

Level Three parents visited us

for lunch

Pizza Bianca

Ingredients

1 quantity prepared pizza dough

(make your own, or buy a pre-

prepared base without tomato

sauce)

2 tablespoons olive oil

(approximately)

1 teaspoon fine sea salt

2 cloves garlic, chopped

Leaves from 3 sprigs rosemary

(approximately 2 tablespoons)

What to do

Roll out your pizza dough and

stretch it to cover the baking

sheet in a rectangle

approximately 37 x 29cm.

Brush top of pizza with oil, then

dimple the surface all over with

your fingers. Sprinkle garlic, sea

salt and then optional rosemary

leaves.

Place baking sheet on the bottom

rack of the preheated oven and

bake until the crust around the

edge is slightly golden, 5 to 8

minutes, depending on how thin

the pizza is. Remove from oven,

brush crusts lightly with olive oil

and also the center if you wish.

Cut into large squares and serve

warm or hot.

After School Care Program

Program Update 22.08.2013

Hi Everyone!

I hope everyone is having a fantastic week and isn't getting too cold. I'm just doing a

quick shout out to anyone who might have any books, board games, toys etc. that are just laying

around. The Playgroup has generously allowed us to use their stuff, but a lot of the toys are aimed

at younger children and don't really get used at OSHClub. I'd love to get some more age

appropriate things for everyone to use and am asking anyone who does have something that

they're not using any more too please donate to our group. There have been requests for dolls,

balls and board games but anything would be fantastic and much appreciated.

Have a great week :)
