    Research Plan:

    Intro The Introduction should

    Establish the topic

Explain why you are going to research this topic (whatis the relevance?)

Introduce the central question and sub-questions

    Research Plan: Questions

In feasibility research your central question is easy todefine: Is my idea likely to succeed?

Sub-questions differ depending on your case

What do you need to know?

    The Private Sector

Before companies prepare to launch a new product, they need to know:

    What theyre making and why

Supply and Demand What will it cost to make it?

Do people want to buy it?

    How many people?

Who are they? What are they willing to pay?

Who is going to invest in making it happen and howmuch?

    The Public Sector

The process is more or less the same for NGOs andGovernments

When they want to do something new they need to

    knowWhat theyre doing and why

    Supply and demand

Who is it for? Who will benefit?

Who will invest in making it happen?

    Donors

    Volunteers

    Target groups

Whatever youre doing, you need to think about your targetgroups

In business: investors, employees and customers

In non-profit: donors, volunteers and employees

    in general:

    Who knows/cares about your issue?

    Who can help

Different target groups require a different approach. As aresearcher, you must tailor your methods and approachfor different targets. You dont approach a CEO the sameway you approach other students

    Research Plan: Methods

This assignment, like most research, requiresmultiple methods

    Desk Research

A Questionnaire At least one other other method

Interviews, case studies, focus groups are all welcome

You need to select the right tools for the right job

What is the best way to answer each (sub-)question?

The Questionnaire is not a matter of choice but youget to choose how to use it

    Research Strategies

    Qualitative Quantitative

    Desk Research Case Study

    Research Plan:Relationships and

Hypothesis By now your plan should include:

    An Introduction and central question(s)

A list of key terms with definitions

    A selection of methods

There is one more thing most researchers

includetheir expectations Do you see or expect relationships between concepts

Do you have a hypothesis or expected outcome?

    Research Plan: Time

    Plan your time carefully.

Questionnaires and other fieldresearch methods can be time-consuming

    In class next week:

Every Group must hand in a research plan that includes allof the elements discussed in class

    Introduction, Central Question and Sub-questions

    Definition of key terms

    Selected Research Methods and justification

Any relationships between concepts or expectations(hypotheses) you have

    A rough schedule

You should keep in mind that your research plan is

not set in stoneYou can make changes along the way, but you need tostart somewhere
