the scoop JUNE 13 2012 Week 8 - two and a half weeks of Term 2 left - time flies! Welcome Abigail Hunter and parents Catherine and John into Room Kowhai. We look forward to sharing the successes of your learning journey during your time at Myross Bush School! We have noticed that a number of children are not fully eating the lunch they have been provided with. The duty teacher and the peer mediators help supervise 'eating time' and children are given permission to leave once they have eaten. With the variable eating time of 170 children this is a hard one to get the perfect balance for, as a whole lunchtime can disappear in the time it takes for some children to eat their food, or, they have a preconceived idea about what they want to do in their lunch hour and food is not always a part of that! Please support us by talking to your child to make sure they know your expectation about eating what they are given and talk with them about what amount of food is appropriate for them. We are all different and our food intake reflects that! If you have a concern about your child's eating habits at school then please approach your child's teacher. The teaching staff are busy putting each individuals report together for our mid year reporting round. These will be out to you (at the latest) by Thursday in the last week of term. We want our mid year reports to reflect a half year of work which is why they come out right near the end of term. These summary reports are then followed up by mid year interviews in Week 2 of Term 3. Bookings for these will be available from Week 1 of Term 3. The new Classroom organisation is well underway. The staff continue to reflect on the best balance for the new classroom and the effect across the existing classroom groups. Details on individual placements will be sent out with the mid year report in Week 10. Staffing for the change has been decided with Karyn Duncan being appointed as the fixed term full time teacher for Terms 3 and 4 of this year while Paula Stewart is on Maternity Leave. Karyn taught Year 5 and 6 at Salford School last year and is currently Mark's management release teacher in Kauri (R8). She has also relieved across some of our other classrooms too. We are excited about Karyn joining our teaching team in a full time capacity as she has already shown great commitment to her existing responsibilities and to the wider life of our school. Welcome aboard Karyn. Please note the blurb from our Sports Coordinators on Moffett Cup developments. It would be great if you can help out with some coaching! Week 8 - two and a half weeks of Term 2 left - time flies!

Please support us by talking to your child to make sure they know your expectation

about eating what they are given and talk with them about what amount of food is appropriate for them.

Details on individual placements will be sent out with the mid

year report in Week 10. School News:Phone System Reminder:1) for reporting GENERAL ABSENCES

2) JUST FOR BUS after school arrangements

3) for CONTACTING RECEPTION or leaving a message if no one is in the office

It is important that the correct number is used for your message for example #2 for bus as this is the only line that is cleared at bus time and if it is left on another line it will be missed. Bus messages need to be here by 2.30pm as it is a busy time for clearing phones and loading the bus. Thank you for your help with this.

School Accounts: Thank you for the payments already received. A reminder that these are due for payment by Wednesday the 20th of June.

Thank you: We raised enough money with the food wrap orders to buy 5 large bags of bird seed. With this cold snap of weather the birds are gobbling through the seed to keep warm. We really appreciate your support with the food wrap orders and will probably do another order in Term 4.

Sports Notices:Country Top Moffett Cup: Friday 3 August 2012Our school is running the Moffett Cup this year. We are relying on wonderful parents to coach the 12 teams we will be entering

as the teachers will be helping out with the running of this event. We require 12 coaches to cover 1 x rippa rugby, 4 x tackle rugby & 7 x netball teams. The coaching would involve 6 practices during school time starting in Term 3 & being there on game day. Please register your interest with Bex Murdoch ph 230 4166 or [email protected] Please discuss with your child what their chosen sport is, as those playing tackle rugby need to be registered with the NZ Rugby Union (those playing on a Saturday will already be registered) and this can be done via the internet for the Moffett Cup tournament. If playing rugby mouth guards and rugby boots are needed. Any questions please contact Bex Murdoch. Good Luck to: Katie Jukes (10), Jaidene Marshall, Sophie Sinclair (11), Benjamin Symon, Bradley Hay (10) Jack Wilcox, Thomas Wilcox, Ben Wylie (11) who are competing in the Southland Primary Schools Cross Country at Otauatu this Friday. The rain will have helped make this a challenging course and we wish our runners the best of luck.

Congratulations to: the following girls who were selected for the Southern Zone Netball Teams. Year 5: Katie Jukes, Milly McLeod, Katie Heads. Year 6: Sophie Sinclair.

Friends of the School:“Facts-a-thon” A reminder to students to be collecting sponsorship for their Facts-a-thon. The test is next Friday! There will be prizes for students who get the most correct answers and as well as for students who get the most sponsorship. Last year you raised $3945 from the Spell-a-thon, lets try to beat it in 2012. Remember all funds raised go toward the development of our new classroom which starts in term 3.

Week 8 Term 2

MANUKA - Manuka children have been choosing a book to bring home for some nights this week as I have been checking progress for the mid year reports. We have created the most amazing Taniwha mural and plan to share this next week in assembly (ie 22nd June). Pencil it in your diaries as the children are excited to share their work. We will also get a copy onto our class blog so you can share it with your wider family and friends. Certificates: Robson McKee and Aimee Phibbs-Geisser

KOWHAI We welcome Abgail Hunter and her family to Kowhai this week. We have been exploring korus and kowhaiwhai patterns. This week we are using them as we work together to create a taniwha! We are using the positional language we have been learning about in maths to imagine and write about our taniwhas around our school. Where will you find the taniwha? Maybe on the tyre swing or under the fort? What a great effort going into practicing for the fact-a-thon. Keep it up everyone- we will soon be super fast! We would love some materials for our making corner (boxes, bottle tops etc) if you have some lying around at your place.Certificates Hollie Stoddart, Noah Lovelock

RIMU Thank you to all the parents who came to assembly on Friday. I think the children did a fantastic job. As the weather gets colder it is a good idea for the children to bring some slippers to keep their feet warm and a change of clothes can be useful for those who like to play outside in the sandpit. We are having fun making rakau and playing the maori stick games.

Certificates Sam Scott and Sacha Horton

RATA It has definitely been colder over the last few weeks and there are a few colds about. It would be helpful if you could make sure your child has some tissues at school. We are getting really good at saying our Mihi Mihi. The children are really enjoying experimenting and using koru patterns to tell a story. Have a great week.

MIRO have been planning storyboards in preparation for our media creations. We are very excited to share what we have been learning about in our Inquiry . As we near the end of the term we are needing new writing books, black pens and pencils. Thank you for your support with this.Congratulation to our Aerobics girls, Holly and Olivia who competed on Sunday and to all our netball and rugby players. We really enjoy sharing our sporting activities and achievements in the class.Have a fantastic week.

TOTARA have been learning about, discussing and making Ta Moko this week in preparation for performing in our Mini Documentaries with great costumes and realistic props! We welcome Sammie Tufui and her family to Team Totara, another smiling face on the team!

Certificates: Katie Cameron for working hard to improve your maths knowledge. Samantha Koppert for great managing of all your responsibilities and commitments.Ben Symon for putting great effort into your reading. Awesome! Oliver Phillips for completing our writing workshop. From Mrs Macpherson.

KAURI are ripping through our documentary creations this week. A key factor for these is the content - do we have a question we are answering, a beginning and an end! It's a lot of fun seeing the animations, puppetry and green-screening going on. Watch out for news about our film festival in Week 10.

We are also eagerly awaiting more milk bottle for our bottle bivy - thanks for all those sent in already. We are nearly half way there!

Assembly Duty: Kauri

Bottle Bivy: Kauri in Room 8 are collecting plastic milk bottles to build a ‘bottle bivy’ as a new learning space in their room. It’s a big challenge and fits in with our ‘team work’ inquiry this term. You can read about their progress on their blog and here at the bottle bivy website being used by them and three other schools who have taken on the challenge. The leading number of bottles collected at the moment is St Marys School in Mosgiel.Their total of 172 is good but still well short of the 450 needed to complete the bottle bivy. Can you help? Please bring all your cleaned plastic milk bottles to Kauri. They thank you in advance!
