This Week in Grade 8ENGLISH: Students havecompleted two sessions ofliterature circles (for eitherthe book Night or Maus) andare completing weekly roles,such as identifyingvocabulary, theme, characterdescription, literary terms,etc. They will continue this
for two more weeks. Askyour child about the bookthey are reading - the classdiscussions have been rich!They should also be workingthrough reading theirindependent book for theirupcoming Book Talks andcompleting a book reporttype template to guide them
through their discussion(either in Feb. or March).
SOCIAL STUDIES:
This week continued withstudents watching videos of
the People PowerRevolution of 1986 here inthe Philippines. Note-takingskills are being practiced,with a focus on main ideasand details. All of this willlead to students writing apersuasive 5 paragraphessay answering Was thePeople Power Revolution asuccess or failure? OnFeb. 6, former PresidentRamos will come and give aspeech for the studentsabout that time period.
SCIENCE:
Students are into thebuilding stage of theirTransformation Unitperformance task on simplemachines. They havedesigned (drawn) a simplemachine/rescue machinethey believe will besuccessful in completing thetask (see Mr. Pasambas blog
for details) and are in thebuilding stage of theprocess. Next week theywill complete the buildingand see if their machineswork. They are all reallyenjoying this process andactivity!
MATH:
Graphing and InterpretingData have been the focusthis week in math class.Students are analyzing datain order to find moreinformation. Importantterms such as mean, mode,median, range, first quartile,third quartile, andinterquartile range are all
terms they are learning andutilizing in class. Astatistics unit assessmentwill be coming up nextweek - date yet to bedetermined.
