Monday, 23 January 2012
Welcome everyone. I hope you’ve had a good week. Last Tuesday night Graeme Rohan and I attended this year’s RYLA Dinner at The Pittwater RSL Club at Mona Vale. It was a very good evening and it was a good chance to get to know Elly Kohistan, the young lady we sponsored this year. The Keynote Address was by Rtn Michael McQueen about the Y Generation. Michael was also a guest speaker at last year’s District 9680 Conference. Elly was
enthralled by his address and could relate to a lot that he talked about. Elly will be happy to make a visit soon talk about her week at RYLA and to personally thank our club for sponsoring her. Also breaking news of Erin McCluskey. Erin as you all know was sponsored by Kellyville Club 5 years ago to RYLA and has been a facilitator for the last 4 years. This year Erin was the Assistance Director and now her wonderful news that she has been elected as Director of RYLA for 2013. I’m sure you will all share my congratulations being elected to the position. Erin’s achievements go from strength to strength. Also Erin is now a member of the Sydney Rotary E-Club which was started during 2011. Hopefully one day when she has time to attend regular meetings she may wish to come and join our club. Thursday this week, 26th January is Australia Day and all preparations seem to be in hand. We will need volunteers to assist with the set up from 7am and then the serving of breakfast to the locals who will be there to celebrate the day. The Kellyville Fire Brigade will be there again this year to cook the BBQ for us and also The 1st Kellyville Scouts will be there again to assist. Bring your friends
families along for the celebrations and The Australian Flag Raising Ceremony which will commence at 9am. Bobby Redman is our District Conference Champion this year and I am looking forward to hearing of her plans to ensure we have a wonderful time in Wollongong in March. The Saturday night main social event is a masked ball and as I wrote in last week’s message, if you haven’t registered for the Conference as yet I suggest you log on to The District Website and either register on-line or download the form and fax in ASAP. Accommodation is limited so the sooner you register the better so you can ensure a place at the conference. We will also have a display in The Friendship Hall this year on our Breakfast Program at Bourke Public School. I would like a good representation of our Club at the Conference this year to ensure that we can man the stall efficiently so that our main project is showcased to the other clubs in our District. Guest Speaker Damian Hickey Raine & Horne Real Estate
Topic - Antique Porcelain Damian was introduced by Graeme Rohan.
Damian’s interest started when his parents took him to auctions as a child. Later
in life he worked for Lawsons Auctioneers in Sydney and Christies in London (where he saw Van Gogh’s famous “Sunflowers” painting sold).
Using a number of pieces on display, Damian introduced us to some of the
history and products of the famous makers Doulton, Royal Doulton, Worcester,
Wedgewood, Claris Cliff, Shelley and Aynsley. Signatures (from 1900), date marks and many artistic features were pointed out. Sizes ranged from
demitasses to huge vases.
Royal Doulton traces its ancestry back to the Jones, Watts & Doulton pottery in Lambeth in 1815. By
1826 the company was trading as Doulton & Watts, and in 1853 became Doulton & Co. The turn of the century saw the granting of the Royal Warrant and permission to use the epithet
'Royal.' The history of Doulton Lambeth ceased in 1956 with the closure of the factory and studios. By that time most of the production had been transferred to more modern works.
Worcester dates from 1751, Wedgewood from 1759 and Aynsley from 1775. The work of the
porcelain artist Claris Cliff is highly valued. Her work was produced from 1922 to 1963.

Some porcelain vases are made with lids – if these are not lost or broken they add to the value of the piece.
Keith Stapley proposed the vote of thanks.
Toast to Overseas Club The tropical storm Washi, which affected The Philippines in 2011, caused much death and devastation in Mindanao ( Southern Philippines). Worst affected were Cagayan de Oro City, Iligan City and also the Province of Misamis Oriental. These areas are in Rotary District 3870. Members of our Rotary families were themselves victims of the inundation. Rotary lost Rtn. Helen Amolata, the spouse of Assistant Governor Dario Amolata and Rotaract President Tish Yrastorza and her parents.
Today we toast the Rotary Club of West Cagayan de Oro, The Philippines. The Club is in District
3870 and was chartered on February 16, 1970.
Our toast to President Laddie Zarsuelo and to the members of the Rotary Club of West Cagayan de
Oro.
“May 2012 be a year free of natural disasters around the world and let us all reach within to embrace
humanity.”
ABOUT ROTARY CLUB OF WEST CAGAYAN DE ORO
The Rotary Club of West Cagayan de Oro (RCW) was conceived by the Rotary Club of
Cagayan de Oro on June 3, 1969. A nucleus committee was then organized headed by
the late PDG Dante Sarraga with Cocoy
Velez, Al Mañus, Dodong Velez, Tito Nable, Ric Santos and Frank Guera as members.
The resolution to organize was submitted and approved during the District Assembly
held on June 13-14, 1969 in Iloilo City under
the term of DG Pafs Mejia.
The Board of Directors of Rotary International approved the Charter on
February 16, 1970. Subsequently, the Charter presentation was held on June 23,
1970 at the Villa Hermosa Hotel with PDG
Cocoy Velez as President and the former Congressman Luis Taruc as Guest Speaker.
The charter members included, PDG Cocoy Velez, PDG Al Manus, PP Faeling Floirendo,
Rtns. Frank Guerra, Dodong Velez, Tito
Nable and Ric Santos.
Today, the club is one of the biggest and the strongest in the district with 50
members. More than 50% of the members has been with the club for more than 5
years while 20% has been with the club for
more than 10 years. Eleven of its members are women and the Immediate Past
President was the second woman to lead the club.
Over the years, the club became one of the most prominent club in the district
producing 7 active District Governors, namely, PDG Cocoy Velez, the late PDG
Bands Hernandez, PDG Al Mañus, PDG Tony
Aguilar, PDG Ben Vegafria, PDG Joe Nebrao, PP Ernie San Juan who was nominated but
was not able to hold the office due to illness and now DG Rhia Abalos is the first lady
governor in the District.
The club also has been one with strong
family ties, having had brothers as members at one time or the other such as PDG Cocoy,
PP Celing and Rtn. Puro Velez. It also has had a mother and daughter team, PAG Rhia
Abalos and Rtn. Sheryl Villarosa, same with
a father and daughter team like PDG Joe Nebrao and Rtn. Rachelle and a father and
son team, like PDG Al Manus and Rtn. Neil. A second generation group, like Rtn. Ferdie
Espiritu, son of the late Pete Espiritu. In-laws like Rtn. Denvi Cabrera, mother-in-law
of Rtn. Elmer Francisco.

To it’s credit the club has sponsored and organized 7 clubs namely, RC Tagbilaran,
Bohol, RC El Salvador, Misamis Oriental, RC Carmen Valley, Far East, Centerpoint and
the latest RC Uptown all in Cagayan de
Oro City.
The club has hosted several District Assemblies, District Conventions, Inter-club
forums, Tri-District conferences and PET’s. Many of its members have been tapped and
continually tapped as resource speakers,
presentors and discussion leaders in Rotary functions.
It has actively supported the Rotary
Foundation and today it has several 4 multi
Paul Harris Fellows, PHf’s and several Sustaining members. It has likewise
participated in the activities of the Rotary Foundation and the club now have 8
members who were former GSE Team members and 5 former Team Leaders, some
of whom are still with the club.
It has been able to conduct award winning projects such as the Teaching and
Organizing People for Self Help (TOPS), the Search for the Most Outstanding
Public/Private School Teachers Award
(MOPSTA), the Search for the Outstanding Barangay, the Anti-Drug Addiction
Campaign, and the Environmental protection/Save our Watershed Project.
It organized the Rotary Club of West
Cagayan de Oro Foundation, Inc. which has continuously supported the major projects
of the club.
Actively involved in community development, the club has received and
successfully implemented 3 matching club
grants, namely, the Peanut Production with RC Jena, Germany, the Hog Raising Project
with RC Ako, Japan, and the Techno Demo Farm Project with RC Balwin, Australia.
The first matching grant project of the club
was the Peanut Raising Project with RC Jena, Germany. This involved the growing
of peanut in 14 has. of land. The project
was implemented through the Rotary
Community Corp of Pagatpat, Cagayan de Oro. In order to improve the yield, the club
tapped the assistance of the Northern Mindanao Peanut Association and the City
Agriculturist who provided the technical
know-how and monitored the project. The project was able to train the farmers in
properly handling the crop thereby increasing their yield.
The second matching grant project received
by the club was with RC Ako, Japan, this
was a Hog Raising Project where 17 pig pens were distributed to the beneficiaries.
Again the beneficiaries were chosen from the members of RCC Pagatpat, the adopted
Barangay of the club. They were then
provided with 4 piglets each and feeds for four months. In return the beneficiaries
provided the labor in caring for the hogs and providing food supplements in order to
being the cost thereby increasing their profits. They also supervised the
slaughtering and the Club members assisted
in marketing the produce. The project was deemed successful because it was able to
fatten the hogs up to a maximum of 110 kilos in 4 months.
The latest matching grant project of the club is the Techno-Demo Farm Project with
RC Balwin, Australia. The club received funds for 30 modules of drip irrigation
equipment that would service 1,200 square
meters of land ea. In order to assist other clubs in the region, some of the modules
were donated to these clubs. Again, the services of the Northern Mindanao
Vegetable Association and the City Agriculturist was tapped to assist in the
project. They provided the technical know-
how and monitored the project. Most of the beneficiaries opted to plant sweet corn
since the demand for the product was high and continues to be high. In 90 days, the
farmers are able to harvest and the
members of the club assist in marketing the produce.

Rotary Foundation – Our Foundation
Money boxes back in stock
The Rotary Foundation money boxes are again available.
There are as many reasons to support The Rotary Foundation as there are ways to do good in the world.
The Rotary Foundation moneyboxes are proving a great success in the
encouragement of personal giving. Those clubs that have taken
advantage of the offer to provide every club with a moneybox at no cost are all talking about the extra dollars coming in. Just $2 a week in these
little beauties will rack up enough savings for Centurion membership or a direct donation to The Foundation.
Just call Michelle on 02 9635 3537 to order supplies for your club. Her email address is [email protected].
Every box that goes out will increase the district’s Annual Giving total by $100 and that means more
DDF further down the track.

ANNUAL PROGRAMS FUND - YTD NOVEMBER
Australian district struggle as others
shine
Overall, our monthly Annual Giving performance in November was down of the
previous year and that even takes into account a 50% increase from The
Philippines and a massive increase from
Indonesia. With a few exceptions, the Australia and New Zealand performances
were well below last year which is a bit disappointing given the fact that November
was Rotary Foundation Month. From the YTD point of view, the overall result remains
strong but due entirely to outstanding
results from The Philippines, New Zealand and to a lesser extent, Indonesia. Australia
remains our biggest concern and it definitely needs urgent attention. Having the 33,000
Rotarians in Australia being outperformed
by the 20,000 Rotarians in the Philippines must be hard to take for the Aussies. It’s a
bit like being beating by the New Zealanders at cricket! I’m sure the cricketers will
bounce back and it would be good to see the Rotarians do likewise.
Aussie Governors should urgently review club performances with their District
Foundation Chairs and develop plans to correct any below standard performances.
Commentary on each country:
The Philippines – A great performance
with a 60% increase YTD November. District
3800 is making a big difference to the
overall result but districts 3790, 3860, 3770
and 3820 are all more than pulling their weight. Only a couple of slow starters and
no doubt RRFC Bobby will be discussing tactics with those District Foundation Chairs
or Governors. It’s a great effort and there
are good signs that it will continue.
Indonesia – Big gains in November
turning an average YTD performance last month into a top result. They might only be
one district containing 92 clubs and 1,721
Rotarians but they are already at $106,235 and there are no Australian districts
anywhere near that mark. Great November performances from the Surabaja-Darmo and
Surabaya Jembatan clubs, and good, strong all-round support from other quarters.
New Zealand – In spite of a quite
November result, the country is still going well with a 73% increase over last year to
date November. District 9920 is leading the way with a spectacular start to the year and
district 9940 is also off to a flyer. It’s
strange to see a district with a zero figure after five months and no doubt John Cole
will be asking questions of someone.
Australia – November was not a good
month for Australian districts. This year our contribution level was half the result last
year and that points to some serious
problems. November should be one of our strongest months but it just didn’t happen.
It’s not the best possible position with 17 of the 22 districts down over YTD November
last year. That represents an overall drop of
20% but more importantly, a drop of just under $200,000. That will take some picking
up. While some of those districts are marginally down against last year, 11 are
badly down and that’s where the attention should be. There are clubs in our region
giving more than a few of the Australian
districts and that should never be the case.

8. Which year was the Rotary membership opened

International stated that Rotary club membership
was for males only. In 1978 the Rotary Club of Duarte, California, invited three women to become
members. The RI board withdrew the charter of that club for
violation of the RI Constitution. The club brought suit against RI claiming a violation of a state civil
rights law which prevents discrimination of any
form in business establishments or public accommodations. The appeals court and the
California Supreme Court supported the Duarte position that Rotary could not remove the club's
charter merely for inducting women into the club.
The United States Supreme Court upheld the California court indicating that Rotary clubs do
have a "business purpose" and are in some ways public-type organizations.
This action in 1987 allowed women to become Rotarians in any jurisdiction having similar "public
accommodation" statutes. The RI constitutional
change was made at the 1989 Council on Legislation, with a vote to eliminate the "male
only" provision for all of Rotary.
9. When did Rotary start in Australia?
The Rotary Club of Melbourne was chartered on 21 April 1921 as the first Rotary Club in
Australia. The Club now has over 250 members and is proud to have many women as very active
members in the club.
10. Where was the first non-U.S. Rotary club
chartered? The first Rotary club outside of the United States
was chartered in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, in 1910.

Joke of the Day -
Paddy Died His will provided £40,000 for an
elaborate funeral. As the last guests departed the affair, his wife Colleen turned to her oldest and
dearest friend. "Ah well, Paddy would be pleased," she
said."You're right," replied Mary, who lowered her
voice and leaned in close. "So go on, how much did this really cost?'" "All of it," said Colleen.
"Forty thousand." "Aw No!" Mary exclaimed, "I mean, it was very
grand, but £40,000?!!!" Colleen answered, "The
funeral was £6,500.. I donated £500 to church. The whiskey, wine and snacks were another
£500. The rest went for the Memorial Stone." Mary computed quickly. "For the love of God
Colleen, £32,500 for a Memorial Stone? How big is it?"
Got to love the Irish!
