Cathedral Book Shop: Father’s Day Father’s Day is still a ways off, but last Sunday’s Trinity sermon by one of Saint Mark’s own ‘fathers,’ the Rev. Canon Bill Donovan – celebrating 41 years with us! – gave us cause to ponder Fatherhood (Fatherness?) a bit early. He considers (and I paraphrase very briefly here; you can listen to his sermon via the Cathedral website) that we encounter the Son in our experiences and relationships with those who are significant and special to us, and we meet the Father as our minds come to understand these relationships. Unlike our experiences, which may be momentary, the Father is not; we can always open ourselves to deeper understanding. Faith may indeed be a mystery (with, as Bill said, doubt always nearby) but the door to understanding is never closed. In this light, the arrival of David Brooks’ latest book, e Road to Character, is particularly timely. Studying the lives of ten great thinkers and inspiring leaders, he challenges us to consider our own life’s priorities – the values we’d like to have recognized at our eulogies, as opposed to those that constitute success according to modern standards. And what of the Holy Spirit? Bill Donovan sees its presence revealed in our feelings and emotions, and this week many of us will shed a tear for Carolyn Russell as we remember the beautiful music she brought to us as a longtime children’s choir director at Saint Mark’s. Carolyn, who died recently, was also a fine photographer, and the Book Shop has a few of her photo cards for those who’d like a remembrance of her; come and see… Saint Mark’s and St. David’s Partner to Launch Community of Hope e Rev. Dr. Helen Appelberg, an Episcopal priest from Galveston, Texas, first introduced our two faith communities to Community of Hope International (COHI) in a workshop last January 31st. e workshop was attended by members of several other metro Episcopal churches. On February 1, Helen, the founder of COHI, presented a faith formation forum at Saint Mark’s on Benedictine spirituality and Community of Hope. Since Helen Appelberg’s visit, e Reverend Katherine Lewis and St. David’s Episcopal Church of Minnetonka’s pastoral care team, along with Dr. Helen Hansen, Pastoral Minister, and St. Mark’s Pastoral Care Committee, have begun preparations to offer Community of Hope training and formation to members of our congregations this fall. Our partnership in this effort draws together our considerable unique gifts for faith formation and education. We expect our COHI training will strengthen our relationships, ensure excellence in our training, and broaden our pastoral ministries. Community of Hope is a 14-week curriculum of spiritual formation that prepares individuals and teams (“circles”) to discern their gifts and respond to their unique vocations. It utilizes Benedictine spirituality to teach us how to live more authentically both in our personal lives and within our faith communities. In addition, Community of Hope reflects the Anglican tradition’s roots in the Rule of St. Benedict. e training will assist us in determining how God is calling us to serve each other and the world. We believe that COHI is a superb fit with Saint Mark’s rich tradition, mission, and calling. Community of Hope training will begin September 14, 2015, and meet Mondays, from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m., alternating between Saint Mark’s and St. David’s. e participant cost of $40 will cover the cost of materials and faculty honoraria. e training will conclude with a retreat and formal commissioning in January 2016. ere will be three cohorts (“circles”)--two lay circles and one ordained clergy circle. e lay “circles” from Saint Mark’s and St. David’s will be composed of 10 to 12 people each. All three circles will meet together for the formal training portion of each class session. Following formal instruction, the circles will meet separately for dialogue and development. We will use Joan Chittister’s book, e Rule of Benedict: A Spirituality for the 21st Century, as the text. It is a delightful day-to-day introduction to the Benedictine Rule. Chittister guides us in the application of e Rule to daily living. We also recommend Esther de Waal’s Seeking God. ese books are both available in the Cathedral Book Shop. Reel Theology: Evelyn Join us as we screen Evelyn (2002) on June 9th at 6:30 p.m. - In 1953, Desmond Doyle is devastated when his wife abandons their family on the day after Christmas. Due to his unemployment and the fact that there is no woman in the house to care for the children, the Irish courts put the Doyle children into Church-run orphanages. Although a sympathetic judge assures Desmond that he’ll get his children back after he gets a job, he learns there’s another barrier. A barmaid, her brother, her suitor, and a tippling footballer become Desmond’s team. Pierce Brosnan and Julianna Margulies lead this fantastic film. Facilitated discussion follows the film. Movie snacks will be available.
