100 ALBUMS 100 SINGLES
Volume 40 No. 24 August 18, 1984 $1.00
ARTIST OF THE WEEK
Ex -Japan's David Sylvian goes solo with Virgin debut
David Sylvian, founding member/vocalist/principal songwriter with Japan from 1976 to 1982, has released his debut solo album on the Virgin label.
Entitled Brilliant Trees, the album was produced by Sylvian and producer/ engineer Steve Nye, and was recorded during 1983 in London and Berlin.
Red Guitar, the first U.K. single from the album, has entered the British charts in the Top 20, and Virgin in Canada has
indicated that two tracks from Brilliant Trees are being considered as Canadian
singles. They are The Ink In The Well, and Nostalgia.
An original member of Japan, Sylvian completed seven albums with the band:
Obscure Alternatives, Adolescent Sex, Quiet Life, Gentlemen Take Polaroids, Tin Drum,
Oil On Canvas (live), and a compilation, Assemblage. The band comprised Sylvian
on guitar and vocals; Mike Karn, bass; Richard Barbieri, keyboards; and Steve Jensen, drums. The band broke up in
1982, immediately following a highly successful tour of the U.K. for which
tickets had been sold out six months in advance for all dates. More or less a rock
and roll band initially, Sylvian and Japan developed a more avant-garde sound as
their career developed. The band's most successful single in
the U.K. was Ghosts, which reached No. 3
on the singles charts in April 1982. By then, Sylvian had met Japanese actor/
avant-garde musician/pop star Syuichi Saka- moto, who at that time was working with
Japan's Yellow Magic Orchestra. In July 1982, Virgin Records released a Sylvian/

Sakamoto collaboration, the Bamboo House/ Music single, which entered British charts
at No. 28 first week of release. Early in 1983, Sakamoto asked Sylvian
to write and perform a vocal version of the theme from his (Sakamoto's) score for the Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence film. This
was to be the first time that Sylvian had written and performed a lyric to an already
completed piece of music. He was able to incorporate within the piece an entirely
different melody line sung over Sakamoto's original theme. The result, Forbidden
Colours, was an international success for the duo.
In August 1983, Sylvian began work on a solo LP at Berlin's Hansa Studios. He
recruited a number of musicians for the project: avant-garde musicians Holger Czak ay
and Jon Hassell; Wayne Braithwaite; and Japan alumni steve Jensen and Richard
Barbieri. The Brilliant Trees LP has broken into the RPM 100 soon after release, bul-
leting up to No. 72 this week. Drawing and painting since he was a
child, David Sylvian had become mildly interested in photography over the last
couple of years. This interest intensified as the result of buying a Polaroid camera
during a visit to Tokyo. He quickly ac- cumulated a collection of composite photos,
collages, and treated photographs, taken in various locations around the world.
Some of these were seen by a repre- sentative of Hamiltons Gallery in London's

Chappell Music sold to Bienstock/Williamson
New York: PolyGram has reached an agree- ment in priciple for the sale of its global
music publishing interests, comprising Chap- pell, Intersong, and their affiliates, to a
group comprising Anglo-American Music Publishing Corporation, and Edward B.
Marks Music Company, both headed by Freddy Bienstock, Williamson Music and the
investment banking firm of Wertheim & Company.
The proposed agreement is expected to be finalized shortly, and since none of the
partners in the acquisition is considered a large publisher, it's not expected there will
be any difficulties with the U.S. anti-trust laws.
According to the PolyGram statement, Freddy Bienstock, an experienced publisher,
will lead Chappell/Intersong after the sale is consumated, which could leave the future
role of Chappell president Irwin Robinson, up in the air.
In Toronto, Chappell Music Canada president Jerry Renewych commented: "I
believe that several people were involved in the bidding for the companies; apparently a
group composed of internal management people was included," concluding with
"I'm delighted that Freddy Bienstock is involved. He certainly has an international outlook, and as long as he's involved, the company will continue to grow."

What am I going to do? I just received my August 4th edition of RPM and you've
taken away the Adult Contemporary chart. Well, you know what the first thing
I did was ... to call you. You tell me that it is very hard to research an adult contempor-
ary list and you have not received any feed- back on it lately. Here's your feedback. I
know it's hard to research ... that's why we subscribe to RPM. Here at CINL we play country and adult contemporary, and to tell
you the truth I don't want to have to sift through tunes on the Top 100 to find suitable songs for A/C. So please find it in
your heart to make my job easier. Matt Jackson,

CKFM's Banas nod toPearcy Android singleToronto: Brian Pearcy, emcee at the Cana-dian Opera Company's annual summerfestival at Harbourfront, makes an im-pressive entrance into the adult contem-porary market with his Android Factorysingle release, Floyd Freud The ParanoidAndroid. The single has been given heavyairplay in the Toronto market throughCFRB and CKFM. Says the latter's CarlBanas, of the single, ". . . a hit in the mak-ing."
The plug side was co -written by DavidOstrovsky and Henry Irwin, with the latterproducing the session. This is Irwin's firstattempt at the music market although hehas produced cabaret shows in Toronto, inwhich he has performed as a singer/actor.
Ostrovsky recently sold TV rights toCTV for Jukebox Lady, which he wroteand produced. He also wrote the flip ofPearcy's single, which is titled SmokeyDreams. It's expected that the team ofOstrovsky and Irwin will conspire to writeand produce a musical show in the notto distant future.
Pearcy is also well-known as a cabaretpeformer, having just completed a long -running dinner theatre show at CabaretEast, which he produced himself. He isconsidered more of a theatre performerthan a rock singer, considered an unusualattribute for breaking into the commercialpop music field.

A Compact Disc plant for Canada? After a mention in this column a couple ofweeks ago and phone calls from interestedradio and press people, there is finally aninformation flow, of sorts, with regard tothe proposed Compact Disc plant to be builtnear Moncton. A Western consortium, PolarAudio is apparently involved and all that'sneeded is 1 share from a record company. There has been a promise for 1/2 a share, plus a couple of 1/2's under considerationfrom major international record companies. In the meantime, CBS in the U.S., will beopening a giant CD plant to accommodatetheir market.

Canada out front with children's recordingsToronto: The Canadian market for qualitypop music aimed at children that has beenbuilt up over seven years is now fully ser-viced with almost 50 albums produced sincethe 1977 appearance of Singable Songs ForThe Very Young, performed by a formerfolksinger, now known to countless childrenas Raffi.
Raffi is credited with igniting the child-ren's recording industry in Canada.
Hy Sarick, owner of the Children'sBookstore in Toronto, explains Raffi'sappeal: "There wasn't much of a businessuntil Raffi came along; (Raffi) made exactlythe sort of record my customers and I were
Richardson off withThis Is A Man singleToronto: Betty Richardson follows herrecent single releases, Special Love andPulse Beat, with another Milan Kymlickaproduction, This Is A Man. The plug sidewas co -written by Toronto composer/guitarist Gord Waszek and TV star NancyDolman. The flip, Nighty -Night, was pen-ned by Carlyle Miller, who is probably bestremembered for writing Sugar Daddy.
Richardson's past releases gained wide-spread favour with Adult Contemporaryprogrammers, resulting in producer Kym-licka gaining the attention of the inter-national market. Firmus is now finalizingnegotiations for the release of Richardson'smaterial in South Africa, Australia andthe U.S.
looking for. He didn't talk down to child-ren . . . he obviously knew how to appeal tothem, and . . . cared about making a qualityproduct." Sarick sells 40,000 children'srecords a year. Raffi alone has sold morethan one million records in Canada.
Major priority for Glen Sernyk, ArstistManager of Troubadour, Raffi's label, is toconvince those in the American trade thatsales of Canadian children's recordings areviable.
"It's a funny thing," concurs MollyThom of Elephant Records, release labelfor children's entertainers Sharon, Lois &Bram. "Americans complain about theprice, yet none of the parents who buy therecords up here have any complaints at all. It's quality material and it's worth it." Re-tailers in the U.S. are accustomed to pricepoints anywhere from $2.98 to $5.98, basedon exposure to years of budget children'srecords. Retail prices for the new Canadianchildren's records run at full list. A&M hasbecome the pre-eminent distributor ofCanadian children's records in the market.A&M distributes Troubadour, Elephant,Kid's Records, and Dave Charles' Pram label.
A&M estimates that 10% of its grossdollar sales for 1983 came from children'srecords, and Jim Monaco, National Publi-city Director, says that the sales patterns" . . . kill once and for all the myth ofchildren's music as a Christmas -only retailindustry."

MICHAEL DAMIAN - PopLove Is A Mystery - Columbia PCC-90710-HSoap Icon Michael Damian (nee MichaelDamian Weir) teamed up on this sessionwith brothers Larry and Tom. Very simply,California pop/rock which should findfavour with Damian's legions of fans. TV'sDanny Romalatti stretches out here withnot always predictable results. The BrothersWeir cover off most vocals, guitars, key-boards, and drums, with assists from severalstudio vets. If Damian's TV career slides atall, he can at least fall back on his skills asa singer. Look out Adrian Zmed. Producedby the Brothers Weir. Jacket photo shouldmove product at retail. - KCW
RAISE THE DRAGON - PopDeliverance - I R S. - SP -70508-WDebut EP from a band comprised of vocal-ist/lyricist Richard Spellman and multi -instrumentalist Sean Lyon. Spellman hasa strong clear voice which he bends aroundsome very thoughtful lyrics, while Lyons'guitar work has a subtle yet pervasive ef-fect on the music. Key are White Country,a wistful and well -crafted ballad, and a suf-ficiently respectful rendition of Sam &Dave's Hold On (I'm Coming). Instrumentalassists by Dave Early (drums), AndrewBodnar (bass), and Pickford Sykes (key-boards). Produced by Raise The Dragon andAnne Dudley - KCS
ELECTRIC DREAMS - PopOriginal Soundtrack - Virgin VL-2298-QThe soundtrack album from Virgin Pic-tures' Electric Dreams film contains con-tributions from the likes of Jeff Lynne(ELO), Phil Oakey (Human League), Heaven17, the ubiquitous Culture Club, and dance-meister/composer/arranger Giorgio Moroder, currently flogging his tarted-up version ofMetropolis. Continuity and focus are oftenproblems for a record which includes morethan one artist, but there Is overlap here;Moroder and Oakey collaborate on To-gether In Electric Dreams, and the overall'70s disco -meets -'80s dance feel seems towork. Culture Club crony Helen Terrychecks in, as well as guitarist Peter Framp-ton in a yes -he's -still -alive appearance. Acalculated effort that will certainly provideMoroder with another paragraph for hisresume. - KCW
A FLOCK OF SEAGULLS - PopThe Story Of A Young HeartJive - JV-6614-MSteve Lovell's production has done a lot
for this band's sound in creating a fullerframework for their paeans to love andIntrospection. Not a lot of progressionfrom their previous efforts, although theset is saved by the beautiful and sincereMore You Live, More You Love track, taken as the first single. Now that they'veput a leash on the synth excesses whichplagued the rhythmic drive of the material, the band for once sounds comfortable withthe results. Engineered by Chris Porter. TheMore You Live, engineered by Steve Lipson. No studio information provided. - KCW
METROPOLIS - RockOriginal Motion Picture SoundtrackVarious Artists - Columbia - JS -39526-HGiorgio Moroder's version of Fritz Lang'sclassic film has already ruffled a few cine-matic feathers, and these tracks certainlywon't endear him to the same indignantpurists. Notable for the inclusion of oneLoverboy track, Destruction, a Moroder/Pete Bellotte penning. Other artists re-presented are Pat Benatar, Queen's FreddieMercury, Jon Anderson of Yes, BonnieTyler, Billy Squier, and everyone's favouriteinsect, Adam Ant. The material was com-posed and produced by Moroder, who spent$200,000 in order to be able to tinker withLang's film, and obviously feels that hemight as well spend a little more to bringin the younger, music -oriented film crowdwhich the film will need to attract. - KCW
ROGER TAYLOR -PopStrange Frontier - Capitol - SJ-12357-FNow that Queen have reached a plateau - ora nadir, depending on your point of view, drummer Roger Taylor decides to go italone with this collection of derivative butenergetic tunes obviously inspired by BruceSpringsteen's car mechanic/American heromusings. Taylor has included a Springsteen'original, Racing In The Streets, just In casethe connection isn't clear enough. Taylor'ssongs are frequently competent, and hisvocals are sufficiently strong, but it almostseems as If this project comes five years toolate; there is a sense of desperation here, and one wonders how long these ideas havelain dormant. Produced by Taylor withassists from David Richards and Germanstudio honcho Mack. Artist's name shouldstimulate radio and retail attention. - KCW
INXS - PopUnderneath The ColoursAtco - 79-01851-PThe second LP for INXS in their nativeAustralia - only now available here - this1981 release reveals the band's earlier ef-
forts to be markedly less rhythmic thantheir more recent material and generallynot as intense. This was a transitionalalbum; refreshingly spare in places, TimFarriss' guitars are understated and Mi-chael Hutchence's vocals are not as force-ful as they become on later records. Keyare Stay Young, and the title track withits subtly political imagery. Produced byRichard Clapton at EMI Studios 301 inSydney. One of a flock of very talentedAussie bands that have flourished in anoften indifferent international climate.- KCW

A few kind words from Phil Collins leadsreaders into a very interesting photo/printworld of Genesis, highlighted immediatelyby Peter Gabriel's summing up of theGenesis Reunion Concert at the MiltonKeynes Concert Bowl, Oct. 1, 1982: "Itwas a festival designed to integrate ThirdWorld music with rock," Gabriel had con-fided in Goddard, continuing with "We had600 amateur musicians from twenty-onecountries - from China, Egypt and Tunisia, and it had a fantastic educational side to itwith 7000 school kids coming in to experi-ment with all these new instruments and toplay along with drummers from differentcountries." The storyline is interesting,Goddard has been doing this kind of writingfor years and he uses his reportage expertiseto advantage. Photographer Kamin has im-proved immensely over his past pairingswith Goddard - the photos here are ex-ceptional. Strutting and sneering has become BillyIdol's trademark and there's obviously aready-made audience for this type oftheatrics, as more than 15,000 fans literally"idolized" their slightly -to -the -left newmusic star. In spite of his attempts to up-stage Honeymoon Suite, the opening act,(his sudden appearance in the audienceduring one of their numbers didn't go un-noticed, nor was it designed to), the WEAgroup didn't come off that badly. Thecrowd was there for Idol which left Honey-moon Suite at somewhat of a disadvantage. After splitting his tight costume and lettinga little of himself hang out, a crowd pleaser,Idol went through his routine, most ofwhich was from his Rebel Yell album, thetitle track getting the most reaction. It washis dated material however, that seemed toplease the most. In his attempt to be Peck'sbad boy, Idol comes off as an extraordinarytalent who has a handle on heavy metal andhow to present the mean leather look, which fortunately, only adds to his vocalcharm. Backup for Idol was supplied byguitarist Steve Stevens, drummer TommyPrice, keyboardist Judy Dozier (who Idollikes to degrade), and Steve Webster, aToronto bass player. - WG

Ava KIX Country aids St. John's Day
A major contributor to the importance of this year's St. John's Day festivities was
CKIX-FM. The theme for this year's cele- brations was Share The Spirit. Bas Jamieson
from sister station Q93, and the St. John's Day Awards Committee presented the first
Share The Spirit Award to Ken Taylor, former Canadian Ambassador to Iran. The
KIX Country Kickers were popular as they appeared in the parade on a float. The
Kickers are Paul Bradbury, PD and morning
man, on guitar and vocals; Richard Fleming, mid -morning jock, on drums and vocals; Bob Banfield, afternoon drive, on key-
boards and vocals; and on -air personality Snuffy Jackson, on vocals. Also featured
were Dr. Neil Rosenburg: Mun Folklore Professor and host of KIX-FM's Bluegrass Country Show; Jamie Snyder from the
Wonderful Grand Band; and Fred Lawrence and Lou Skinner from the Country Ducats.
Another popular performer was KIX-FM's
own Catherine Steele. Bob .

Eastman's schedule heavy on one-nighters
Milton, Ont. Eddie Eastman is currently on tour in the Maritimes, doing concerts, fairs and one nighters. He has played the Bridge-
water Exhibition, the Minto Arena in New Brunswick, the Kentville Arena, Tignish
and Wellington and the Crapaud Arena in P.E.I.. He returns to Ontario for the Cooks- town Tractor Pull (Aug. 12), and that same
day will be featured as the celebrity artist at the CHOW Fan Fair in Welland.
Paulette Rowsell, Management Consul- tant for Eastman, reports that the Salute To The Ottawa Valley, taped by CBC
Radio, featured Carroll Baker and East- man in concert at the Robert Simpson Park and drew more than 16,000 country
music buffs for the show. Baker was backed by Baker Street, while Eastman was given
instrumental backing by his own Terra Nova Express. A crowd pleaser for the show was the Baker/Eastman duet of Too Hot To Sleep Tonight, which became
a popular chart item last year, How Close Am I To Losing You, their new duet, not yet released, and Islands In The Stream.
A new album and single release is now in the works for Eastman.
The Eddie Eastman show will air on CBC this October and run for 12 weeks.

Aid to tornado victims from Carlton Showband
Pembroke, Ont: A benefit for victims of a tornado which swept through Eastern Ontario and into Quebec in July, has
raised in excess of $15,000. The concert given by the Carlton Show -
band, was the brain -wave of group leader Sean McManus. Says Sean: "The group has
always been well received in the area and we had Saturday (July 28) off, so we decided to
donate our services." A little known fact about the Cadtons
is their charity work. "We'll have a concert in the evening," continues McManus, "but
during the day we'll go and perform for prison inmates, children's hospitals, or senior citizen's homes, just to bring the
shut-ins some pleasure." The Carltons have just launched their
U.S. tour with a series of fair dates in New York, Maine, and Vermont, with an appear- ance on Nashville's Grand Ole Opry slated
for October. With the assistance of Dean Cross and
Frank Scott of the Calgary -based Perform- ing Artists agency, The Carltons will be
touring the prairies extensively through October and November.
