Summer projectSculptural Jewellery Design

Hand-in date: Friday 16 September 2014

Introduction

Fashion design ideas and concepts can be influenced and developed by a variety of sources from visual imagery, costume, architecture, objects, art, etc.

This summer project will start you on the journey of becoming a Designer by focusing on the first stage of Design Process. This will be done through using your imagination, experimentation and model making using everyday objects that inspire you to create an item that will be adorn on the body: a sculptural piece of jewellery.

The aim of this project is to encourage you to experiment with model making techniques and the use unconventional materials as well as to encourage you to think creatively.

Inspire yourself through visiting art exhibitions, collections and museums and look at art and design books to start to get some initial ideas for your own jewellery piece.

Brief: objet trouvé (found object)

• Take an everyday object/s and through repetition of this object create a sculptural menswear or womenswear jewellery piece to be worn on the body. The jewellery pieces can be constructed using any household or industrial items to create a bold and innovative fashion statement, but should not necessarily use traditional materials related to fashion or accessories.

• Photograph your jewellery piece and fully style on a model of your own choice to create a contemporary fashion image.

• Have fun with the summer project; there are no restrictions to your creativity or experimentation. You can design conceptually or commercially – most importantly: Think outside the box Hand- in Date: Tuesday 16th September 2014

Preparation for studyThis first term introduces students to contemporary design practices, drawing and illustration techniques used for fashion and the process of experimentation and exploration used to generate creative and innovative design ideas.

You will all be coming in at different levels, but the aim of this term really is to bring you all to a similar level, and to give you all the confidence to produce forward thinking design outcomes, and to understand the links between research and creativity during the first year of study.

It is not a competition, but it is hard work and we expect you to value your time here.

We have issued you with an Equipment List on page 8. We would ask you to purchase this equipment before your Induction Week at UCA Epsom.

Please start to plan and prepare for your studies now, so that you have time to put money aside and purchase the equipment required for the start of your studies. These will be your tools of the trade!

Design workshops

The design workshops will focus on the design process, from research, experimentation, design development and final design presentation methods.

You will be introduced to research as a process of investigation and exploration as well as learn a wide range of creative ways in which to interpret your research material into original and innovative fashion design ideas.

The role of problem solving and the use of 2D and 3D experimentation will enable you to fully develop, test and realise your ideas throughout the design process.

The development of presentation and communication skills will also be supported through the Design Workshops, in which you will be encouraged to present your ideas and project outcomes through design reviews, critiques, tutorials and portfolio presentation.

Drawing workshops

The drawing workshops will focus on the development of drawing and illustration throughout the year and enable you to communicate your ideas with confidence. You will be introduced to a range of drawing techniques and illustration methods that will provide you with the essential tools to be able to creatively explore and develop ideas and to present final design outcomes appropriate for industry contexts.

Independent study

Independent study will require you to undertake preparation for your timetabled sessions, follow-up work to extend your own learning and development, reading or research activities or further practice in order to develop your skills and confidence. In all cases, students will be expected to demonstrate self-initiative as well as manage and be responsible for their own learning.

Page 9: Welcome Guide 2014 - University for the Creative Artswebdocs.ucreative.ac.uk/BA_Fashion_Year0_2014...as Ralph Lauren, Abercrombie & Fitch, Burberry, Pringle and Givenchy. The course

All taught sessions will provide you with all the basics that you will need at this point, however it is essential that you follow up from these sessions and expand upon your learning during your Independent Study.

So that you develop your problem solving skills and further your creative development, you will need to continue to work on your design projects out of class.

Attendance

Students on the BA (Hons) Fashion course are expected to attend and arrive on time to all of their timetabled sessions, including lectures, seminars, group and individual tutorials, learning support sessions, workshops, inductions and demonstrations.

Regular attendance means that students can take full advantage of the learning and teaching opportunities available to them, and gain the greatest benefit from their course.

The Course Team recognises that students need to undertake part-time employment to support their studies, and that students have other commitments such as childcare or family events.

However, the Course Team does expect students to fit these commitments around timetabled sessions and their designated Independent Study, in order to take part in the course fully.
