On CBS This Morning, Oprah Winfrey gave a preview of an upcoming 60 Minutes segment she recently filmed about childhood trauma and resilience. The 60 Minutes story will air this Sunday, March 11 at 7:00 p.m. ET and 6 p.m. central time on CBS 58. For those of us that partner with families, the ACE’s research provided the missing link in understanding the difficulties in supporting and engaging families. Connecting unaddressed trauma and the influence it has on parenting and a family’s ability to achieve and maintain their wellness is the first step in supporting children and becoming a compassionate and supportive, agency, community and nation. Oprah suggested the Ace’s research provided her a deeper meaning in understanding the impact of trauma. Her advocacy is an important contribution in supporting children and families, and in moving forward with the information gathered from the Adverse Childhood Study we focus on supporting resiliency in children, families and communities with the recognition that support equals resiliency. The call to action for those of us partnering with families is to advocate for policies and funding streams that acknowledge the signs and symptoms of trauma in individuals, families and communities and build a roadmap to resiliency.
