Faith Formation Catechetical Sunday
The USCCB (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) states, "Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel." In reflecting on the faith-filled catechists of Stella Maris Parish, I have noticed the following faith attributes of each of our catechists:
Grade 1 - Melanie Johnson has created several faith filled games and crafts actively involving her students. Melanie's creativity makes her students realize, "Yes, Jesus loves me." Grade 2 - Nancy Stubenvoll prepares her class well for their First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. Nancy teaches students to let their light shine for the Lord. Grade 3 - Mary Moran does much prayer preparation with her class. Her students know their Guardian Angel is always protecting them. She teaches them to learn the life of Mary and Jesus through the Rosary. May the Prayer of St. Patrick continue to bless our Irish catechist! Grade 4 - Dianna Moser greets her students as they enter church for Faith Formation. She is a joy-filled catechist. Her students know if in your life you place Jesus first, Others second and Your-self last you will find JOY in following Jesus. Grade 5 - Pat Gureski serves our Parish in so many ways: CCW, Sacristan and Catechist, Office helper...and I know this list is hard-ly complete! Pat models/teaches her students, as Jesus taught, to serve others. Grade 6 - Needs a Catechist who witnesses the love of their Cath-olic faith which will make a powerful impact in the lives of our students. Grade 7 & 8 - Mary Kate McCormack is such a caring, compas-sionate soul as she interacts with all her students. Her love for Je-sus and her students is seen in every lesson taught as is fun and her infectious smile!
Grade 9 - Alan Moser is always prepared with lessons teaching the seriousness of becoming confirmed in our faith. But the fun faith games he plays with his students, also shows his students his less serious side! Grade 10 - Linda Cummer, yes, this year I will also be meeting with our tenth-grade students. As we gather for class, my opening question to my students, which I have asked in all my years as a catechist, continues to be, "Where did you see God in your week?"
Washington Island Catechists Grade 1 - Krista Gunnlaugsson will teach her twins, Tug and Tilly, as they enter first grade. Previously Krista taught her daugh-ter, Greta, and Rita Valentincic their fourth-grade faith lessons. Tug, Tilly and Greta are blessed with a Mom who truly lives her faith at home too! Grade 5 - Margie O'Connor is a speech teacher at Washington Island School teaching a variety of grades. She has taught a variety of grades as a parish catechist too! Her spirit is uplifting as are her faith lessons. Grades 8, 9, and 10 - Larry Kahlscheuer will inspire students, Spencer Johnson (gr.8), Andrea Valentincic (gr. 9), Max Johnson (gr. 10) and Julia Valentincic (gr. 10) with his life talks on Chosen to Be Catholic (the student textbook). Diane Kahlscheuer makes sure students get to their early morning faith formation class on time...how? by serving the students breakfast! Diane and Larry not only teach students their faith but insure weekly Masses on the Is-land run smoothly. Their dedication to service is exemplary.
All catechists of Stella Maris Parish play an important part in hand-ing on the faith to our students and being a witness to the Gospel. Youth Faith Formation begins Wednesday, October 3rd. SISTER BAY KITCHEN-Until further notice, we do not have electricity in the SB kitchen. Meetings will have to be rescheduled to another facility if anyone uses the kitchen. We have an electrical problem and don’t know when it can get fixed.

STEWARDSHIP-Thanks to everyone who responded to our Stew-ardship Service and Sharing drive by sending in their updated infor-mation. About 45% have responded so far which is wonderful! If you have not returned your forms, it is still important that we hear from you—even if it is just to update your contact information--as many of your phone numbers or e-mail addresses have changed. Forms are available at our website, from Committee Reports and Forms/Stewardship under the Ministries tab at www.stellamarisparish.com or contact the office. Please save us the time and expense of contacting you again by returning your forms today.

THE SISTER BAY & LIBERTY GROVE FIRE DEPARTMENT is partnering with the American Safety & Health Institute to offer classes to educate the community in the proper method of using an AED and performing CPR. “I WAS SICK AND YOU VISITED ME”-MATTHEW 25:36- Door County Medical Center Spiritual Services Department is in need of volunteer Eucharistic Ministers to distribute Communion during the weekday mornings at least once a month. Volunteers will have had received training and are commissioned as Eucharis-tic Ministers within their parish. Eucharistic Ministers must be physically able to walk the Medical Surgical second floor and the Skilled Nursing on second floor in the hospital and bring Commun-ion to approximately 15 people daily. All new volunteers shadow an experienced Eucharistic Ministers until they feel comfortable to distribute communion alone. All volunteers are required to com-plete a volunteer application, background check and blood work as well as receive an annual flu vaccine and attend an initial orienta-tion and annual educational event. PARKINSON'S SUPPORT GROUP- Stella Maris Parish. The monthly Northern Door Parkinson's support group will meet at our Sister Bay location from 12:30 pm-2 pm on the Third Monday of each month. For further information contact Bonnie Mirkiewicz at (920) 421-4997.

ST. MARY OF THE LAKE SODALITY will be holding their Fifth Annual "Not Your Usual" Bake Sale on Sunday, Sept. 23rd after the 11:00 Mass. In addition to baked goods, we will be selling produce, flowers/plants and Autumn craft items. All donations are welcome. Proceeds will be used to get the "Bells of St. Mary's" ringing again! FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH in Sister Bay, is planning a Commu-nity Thanksgiving Dinner, Thursday, November 22nd at 1 pm in their Fellowship Hall. Worship and Music Column
Reflection on Light The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, God’s mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22-23) I love the theme of light within the Sacred Scriptures. Since I was a child, I have always been drawn to light and I have been particularly moved by the Light of Christ in my life. As a child, I enjoyed singing “This Little Light of Mine,” as it was the first song that taught me I am a light within this world because Jesus is in my heart. No amount of darkness could squelch that for me as a child--in the words of the song, no bushel was going to hide my brightness. As I grew older, the physical sight of a candle helped me to connect with the Divine. Candles bring a smile to my face: they are simple in nature but can provide such brightness in a dark room. When watching a sunrise, light is present long before we are able to see the sun. It only takes a glimmer of light to contrast the darkness of a great space and that is miraculous. In a world where darkness is the topic of most news stations, the titles of most articles and instantly at our fingertips through social media, light is something I choose to focus on. During my junior year at UP, I was invited to sing at Mass. This initial invitation led me eventually to go through RCIA (the Right of Christian Initiation of Adults) during my senior year. I became Catholic at the Easter Vigil two weeks before graduation. The Easter Vigil is filled with the theme of light: the fire, the Paschal Candle, the lights coming back on and light referenced in the responses and the songs. That light continues in every moment of every day for me. I see the Light of Christ every time someone overcomes a struggle or challenge, however small. I see that Light when someone does something kind for a stranger. I see that Light when I read an encouraging or uplifting article on Facebook. I see that Light when I enjoy a cup of tea with a close friend while we talk about life. April 19, 2014 changed my life forever--not only because I came to believe with all of my heart that I am a child of the Light but also because I came to believe that there is light in others and in the world. The Light of Christ shines through God’s continuous love. This gracious love never dies, just as God’s mercies never end. The past three years of my life would not have been possible without Christ’s Light within my heart, because I would not have been able to see the Light in others or in a world that chooses to focus so much on the darkness. As the scripture above says, the light each morning shows the new-ness of the Lord’s love and mercy, and that gives me hope. As we head into the time of shorter days and longer nights, let us remember the power and glory of the Light. “Christ, be our light! Shine in our hearts. Shine through the darkness. Christ, be our light! Shine in your Church gathered today.”

Infant Baptism The baptism of new babies and young children revitalizes our faith community. Please con-tact the parish office to make arrangements for baptism.
Adult Initiation The Catholic Church is always enriched whenever any adult chooses to be Catholic. Adults wishing to be baptized, or bap-tized adults wishing to be con-firmed, the RCIA program is available.
Reconciliation God’s great mercy is some-thing to be celebrated. Ritually we Catholics experience God’s unconditional love in the sacra-ment of reconciliation. Our pastor is available for this sac-rament on the 1st Thursday of
the month from 5:00-6:00 pm at our Baileys Harbor site (except holidays) and by ap-pointment.
Sacrament of Matrimony A faith-filled wedding is a joy-ful time for the couple and the parish. Our parish wants to have all weddings here be the best possible. The couple must meet with the pastor before a date can be reserved. Please contact the parish office at least 12 months in advance to begin preparation.
Ministry to the Sick Everyone needs extra compas-sion and care when his or her health is not at its best. As a parish, we try to meet that need. Communal anointing Masses take place twice yearly, with individual anointing done when requested. Parishioners in the hospital, nursing home or other institution are encour-aged to notify the office to arrange for visits or commun-ion.
