Faith Formation Saint Books

We have many saints to pray to, emu-late and learn about. Youth Faith Formation will be challenging students to do just that this year. Our program was blessed with a monetary memorial from the Winnie Dahlen family and our catechists decided it

would be appropriate to purchase saint books for our students. Af-ter all, Winnie Dahlen was a catechist for over forty years and we believe that may qualify her for sainthood! Hence, the saint books were ordered...forty to be exact. The saint books range from an interest level for grades one through high school. Two volumes of "Saints for Young Readers for Every Day" highlight a saint(s) for every day of the year. Today is Sunday, October 28th, a good day to learn about two apostles of Jesus: St. Simon and St. Jude. St. Simon was called the zealous one because he had much devotion to Jewish law and he gave his energy to preaching the Gospel. St. Jude, often known as Thaddeus, means "the brave one." St. Jude is also called the saint of "desperate or impossible cases." These two apostles had unique and different personalities, but each was greatly loved by the Lord. We can ask St. Simon and St. Jude to show us how to accept ourselves and use our gifts to help spread Jesus' message. As our children read the accounts of the saints' holy lives, may they strengthen their faith. And as we will celebrate All Saints Day this coming week, may we all pray: O God, You have given us the Saints to be examples in this life, our friends in the spirit and our helpers in heaven. I ask you to give me the grace to be more like the saints. Amen. ~Blessings, Linda Cummer, Faith Formation Coordinator

Christian Service & Responsibility The holiness to which the Lord calls you grows through small ges-tures in everyday life. Tweet from Pope Francis NEXT MISSION TRIP – Monday Nov. 5 a group will spend the day at the St. John’s Shelter in Green Bay, helping to ready the shelter for their opening in mid-Nov. We will car pool, leaving at 8 am and returning before 5 pm. If you are interested, contact Jan Liss at [email protected] DID YOU KNOW? Dismas Ministry is a Catholic Prison Out-reach named after the repentant thief, Dismas, crucified with Jesus on Calvary. The ministry focuses primarily on a spiritual approach with inmates who want to understand and strengthen their relation-ship with God. Inmates who deepen their faith and grow in under-standing of scripture will become less likely to offend others after release. A quote from an inmate in Colorado “Thank you so much for the Bible, I read it constantly. Also, I have taped the Dismas Prayer on the door of my locker where I see it all the time and helps to bright-en my day.” TOYS FOR TOTS-Please help to make Christmas happier for less fortunate children in northern Door County. New toys and games can be placed in the collection boxes at the main entry. Toys are being collected from November 10 through November 30. Last fall, $1,000 was sent to Catholic Relief Services for Hurri-canes Harvey and Irma relief. $500 given to Special Olympics-Door County to enabled those with intellectual disabilities the tools they need to increase their self-confidence and improve their health.

PHISHING-This is an internet term used for a type of scam I got caught in. Phishing is when someone gets into a person's computer address book. They then send out many messages from those ad-dresses requesting something from those people. Last week I re-ceived a message from (Rev Dave [email protected]) which asked me for a favor. Knowing Fr. Dave was on vacation, I asked what he needed and agreed to get (3) I-tunes Cards for a $100 each. The message said it was for a friend in the hospital with Cancer. The message then asked I text a picture, for the code on the cards, to the person in the hospital. Within 20 minutes, I received another re-quest for another 3 $100 cards. At this point, I knew I've been had. I sent a proper email back thanking them for taking my money. The next day I reported it to the Sheriff's Dept.. The Department said some people have been taken for a lot more money than the $300 I lost. I asked that they share this incident with the public so others learn from my mistake and this why I'm sharing it with you. Even when things look right they can still be wrong. Check it out first. The Better World Shopping Guide In a world that is obsessed with instantaneous satisfaction with the least amount of cost possible, it's hard to remember to focus on sustainability and ethical purchases. Growing up, my family was very poor. We often bought the cheapest food we could find, because that's all we could afford. Unfortu-nately, in our country, cheap does not mean healthy or ethi-cal. The poor are often exploited and kept in that category, because there is no way to get out. Healthy food is expensive and the poor resort to unhealthy foods because they are cheaper. Also, when you're fighting to get by day-to-day, we are not in a position to focus on things like sustainability, healthy foods or ethical buying. Instead we focus on getting our families food, so they don't go to sleep hungry. Shout out to my parents for doing the best they could with the little they had! As I've grown, finished college and started my first "real" job, I've learned along the way a lot about socioeconomic statuses and the circle we get stuck in because of our capital-ist culture. As I've been able, I've tried to buy healthy, local food. When we buy local, we not only know we are eating healthier, we also know that we are helping our local econo-mies. Large companies often use chemicals, animal testing, child slave labor and other unethical things because they just want the most money they can get at the cost of others. It's not easy. It's not always cheap. It's not always possible for those with low incomes. No one is perfect and we all love some cheap, deep fried food that is probably not healthy or ethical/sustainable. But the more we learn and the more we become aware of where our products come from and that our money has an impact, the more we can move in a better direction; however small our steps. When I first looked through this book, The Better World Shopping Guide, I have to admit it made me more than a little depressed. Most of what I have been buying was at the D or F level with a couple of death symbols. ( BUT! I did have a few things in the B and even A categories.) Looking through all of these, I realized that there are some categories that I could easily improve on. Secret, for example, has an F rat-ing. I don't have to buy that brand. This book shows brands from A-F ratings. Even if I move from an F to a C, I know that I am working at spending my money in a more ethical manner, while accounting for my budget. Often, I cannot afford the A+ status but I can continue to be better. My goal is to move from F to at least C in all areas of purchasing. My other goal is to not beat myself up when I make a purchase that is a low rating. 25 years of just purchasing, takes time to transfer my way of thinking and it will take some time for this to become normal. Not all of us are in a position for this to be on our minds, but many of us are and I ask you to think about your spending habits and to set the goal of bettering yourself, even a little.
