PARISH INFORMATION Third Sunday of Advent A SEASON OF HOPE Today we can bask in the imagery that the Mass readings offer us. In particular, Isaiah’s vision of a parched land that blooms with abundant flowers holds a message for each of us. Too often we are just like that parched land. We can allow ourselves to become absorbed in the waves of consumerism that grip so many. We look for fulfillment in the things that money can buy. Unfortunately, this leaves us like parched land, thirsting for something that money can’t buy. This holy season has much to offer to quench our thirsts. In a word, this season offers hope. We are told that those who are ransomed by God will know joy and gladness. For them, sorrow and mourning will be no more. Let us place our hope in these promises. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Tercer Domingo de Adviento TIEMPO DE ESPERANZA Hoy podemos deleitarnos con el simbolismo que las lecturas de la misa nos ofrecen. En especial, la visión de Isaías de una tierra sedienta que florece en abundancia contiene un mensaje para cada uno de nosotros. La mayoría de las veces somos como esa tierra sedienta. Dejamos que las olas del consumismo, que se apoderan de tantos, nos absorban. Buscamos realizarnos en las cosas que e l d inero puede comprar . Lamentablemente, esto nos deja como una tierra baldía, sedienta de algo que el dinero no puede comprar. Este tiempo sagrado tiene mucho que ofrecer para saciar nuestra sed. En una palabra, este tiempo ofrece esperanza. Se nos dice que los rescatados por Dios conocerán el gozo y la dicha. Para ellos, la pena y la aflicción habrán terminado. SIMBANG GABI This year’s theme is, “Jesus, make us generous dispensers of Your Divine Mercy.”

Simbang Gabi is a Filipino tradi on brought to the Philippine faithful by the Spanish Friars from Mexico in the 16th Century. According to tradi on, Simbang Gabi or Mass at Dawn is a nine-day novena to the Blessed Mother. The novena begins on December 16 as early as 4 in the morning and culminates with the “Misa de Gallo” on Christmas Eve. (Source: The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Manila).

We have been fortunate to have Simbang Gabi as one of the tradi ons being prac ced in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, par cularly in our San Pedro Pastoral Region. Every year, churches in our region choose each of the nine days to celebrate the Simbang Gabi in their parishes. This year, our church has chosen to celebrate the Simbang Gabi on the first of the nine days, December 16, 2016. All are welcome to the Mass at 7:00 p.m. Then a er the Mass, enjoy some (Filipino) food and Christmas Carols in the Parish Hall.

It does not ma er if one completes the novena; what really ma ers is what is inside the heart. The blessing does not depend on the number of Masses a ended; but what is important is the disposi on of the person who receives the Lord’s blessing. (Source: RC Archdiocese of Manila).

El Grupo de Oración invita a Su Posada, 20 de diciembre a las 7 p.m. Las posadas son del 16 al 24 de diciembre, nueve días antes de la Navidad. Generalmente los anfitriones se preparan con figuras que representan a José y a María buscando en dónde nacerá su Hijo, con hojas con los cantos para pedir posada, las oraciones necesarias y villancicos, para que todos puedan participar. Como es una fiesta de origen religioso, para celebrar un acontecimiento religioso, es pues lógico pensar que en ellas no puede faltar la oración, la lectura bíblica y la reflexión, además de los cantos y la alegría que nos ayudan a vivir mejor estas fiestas.

Se acostumbra iniciar con el rezo del Rosario, intercalando los cantos para "pedir posada" entre cada misterio, así como villancicos, mientras los asistentes van caminando de una puerta a otra; se termina con la lectura correspondiente a ese día de la novena de Navidad y por último con la fiesta, para celebrar y compartir. The Posadas are from December 16 to 24, nine days before Christmas. Generally the hosts are prepared with figures representing Joseph and Mary looking for where their Son will be born, with copies of the songs to ask for lodging, the necessary prayers and carols, so that all can participate. As it is a celebration of religious origin, to celebrate a religious event, it is logical to think that they cannot miss prayer, biblical reading and reflection, as well as the songs and the joy that help us to live better these holidays.

It is customary to begin with the prayer of the Rosary, interspersing the songs to "ask for lodging" between each mystery, as well as carols, while the assistants are walking from one door to another; It concludes with the reading corresponding to that day of the Novena of Christmas and finally with a reception, to celebrate and to share.

PROTECTING OUR CHILDREN Did You Know? Be aware of the difference between accidental and suspicious bruises Many children play hard, and can suffer bruises or injuries as a result. With some injuries, it’s hard to tell whether they are a result of too much roughhousing or abusive treatment. Follow this guideline to assess a child’s bruising. Most accidental bruises are in common loca ons – knees, elbows, and foreheads. In contrast, bruises on a child’s neck or back could indicate poten al mistreatment or abuse. Although kids should be allowed to explore and learn their limits, suspicious bruises are warning signs that should not be ignored.
