Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Fam-ily, the family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. The Church always celebrates this feast on the Sun-day after Christmas. Jesus came ‘as One like us’ and therefore needed and had a human family.
A lot happens in our families and so too in the Holy Family. In today’s Gospel, Luke writes: “And Jesus advanced in wisdom and age and favor before God and man.” Jesus learned important things in his family; wisdom, how to live a good life; age, he grew physically and was cared for; favor or grace, he grew in what matters to God. The Holy Family is a model for our families, important things also happen in our families. In the Christian tradition, families have been described in different ways, for example, as schools of virtue and as a domestic Church. Virtues are moral excellences, they tell us the best ways to live our lives. In our 2nd reading, Paul tells us some of those virtues: “heartfelt compassion, kind-ness, humility, gentleness and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another.” We first learn the virtues, how to live a good life, in our families. The family is also called a domestic Church, meaning, we learn about God and the things of God. What happens in our Churches first should happen in our fami-lies, for example, worship, prayer and faith. As I say, a lot of important things happen in our families. One final thing: there is no such thing as a perfect family. We expect a lot from our families but, as is said, they are ‘a work in progress.’ One of the very important things then we learn in our families is forgiveness. As St. Paul writes: “bearing with one another and forgiving one another.” Christmas Blessings, Fr. Sheridan THE SOLEMNITY OF MARY The Feast of the Solemnity of Mary is January 1, a holyday of obligation. Masses for this feast are December 31 at 5:00 and January 1 at 9:00 am. A Happy New Years to you. CAN YOU HELP? During the season of Christmas and in January, we are in need of help with the dinner meal on some days. We are very flexible with our needs and how they might be met. If you can help us, please contact Fr. Sheridan

Speaking of Liturgy
The Holy Family
Immediately following our celebration of
Christmas, the Church provides us with a number of related celebrations helpful for strengthening family life:
December 26, the Feast of St. Stephen,
the first martyr; December 27, the Feast of St. John, the
Evangelist; December 28, the Feast of the holy Innocents.
Since these are weekday celebrations, many may not be aware of them. All three of these feasts remind us that following Christ has its demands, even to the point of giving one’s life in order to remain faithful to Christian disciple-ship. Naturally, family life has its demands but none of these exceed our strength if we remem-ber that God has given us the gift of the divine Son who dwells within each of us because of our baptism.
This Feast of the Holy Family reminds us
that life was not easy for Jesus, Mary and Jo-seph. They model for us a fmily life not beyond our reach, but one that is very real and built on caring for and loving each other, built on a reli-ance on God for guidance and assurance.

WORD: Holy Listening Each week we gather to relax and listen to a short passage from scripture, reflect on God’s word, respond in prayer, and rest in God’s presence. The scripture passages are taken from the Sunday Gospel to support our journey. This ancient but simple process allows God’s word to touch us in our daily lives and transform our hearts. When: Saturdays 9:00 – 9:45 a.m. On-going . Where: The “Upper Room” Second floor at the SFX Parish Office Small groups offer a valuable way to enrich our faith and provide us with companionship for our journey.
SFX Women’s Book Club Book: "A Man Called Ove," by Fredrik Backman When: January 19, 2016 at (:30 A.M. Where: Mallinckrodt Community Center Reviewer: Blanca Dabrowski Hostesses: Barbara Stinneford and Barbara Dhein In this bestselling and delightfully quirky debut novel from Sweden's Fredrik Backman, a grumpy yet loveable man finds his solitary world turned on its head when a boisterous young family moves in next door.
Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell." But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn't walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time?
Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.
