From the Pastor’s Desk Being Different. Being different in society today is seen as a good thing. Being the same as everyone else is seen as conformity and thus a lack of creativity. Creativity becomes a virtue in this perception of how things should be. At closer look, however, we see a society that thrives on sameness presented in different ways. The continual reduction of local eateries that once were a symbol of our region’s uniqueness, like the Strongbow Inn in Valparaiso, being replaced by chain restaurants that appear to be local but are the same in other places, is a sign of this trend. So, it is interesting to observe the social calls for being different, belonging to this social group or that, and the powerful effect of still being the same. Indeed, we could see that the marketing of being different and identifying with one social/sexual group or another is also convenient for advertisers who can better target their audience and thus increase profits. You and I are called to be different but not in some self-reliant way or by social pressure to identify ourselves as different but by God. In the scripture today, the theme of being “set apart” is very apparent. You and I are really meant to be different together. We are set apart to be holy, like our Creator, our Father. This is not like what the world considers different, which can set up a conflict between the reality of one’s body, how we were created, and how one feels, emotions which in fact we often create consciously or subconsciously. This difference, we are called to, is in our very essence; it is in creation itself. We, our ancestors, our first parents, fractured that original union with God and Jesus healed it again on our behalf. Now, it’s not easy to be set apart. Indeed, we cannot do this on our own. We need Jesus as our helper and guide. We need to hear his Word regularly to be strengthened, to know what we are called to be. Today we are challenged by that Word, to be faithful to spouse and family; not to be fooled that the difference the world promises is really sameness. We are challenged to forgive, to not contribute even in a personal way, to the violence we experience around us. Our difference lies in our ability to allow God to unite both our true created selves with feelings and emotions shaped by the true Word of God handed down to us by the Apostles through the church that Christ established. He established it to ensure that we can be truly different than the world and so be recognized as children of God, brothers and sisters of Christ. Christ, the living Word, who is the only bridge that makes it possible for us to be in God and so to be like God, Father, Son and Spirit.

Bradley A. Zamora is a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago and since September 2015 has served as the Director of Liturgy and Chairperson and Instructor in the Department of Liturgy and Music at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake, Mundelein Seminary. He also serves as the Director of International Students. Ordained a priest for the Archdio-cese of Chicago on May 17, 2014, he served for three years as the Associate Pastor and

the Director of Liturgy at Holy Name Cathedral while simultaneously, for two years, also serving at the seminary. Fr. Brad is a member of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians (DMMD Division), a board member of the Chicago Chapter of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians, and an associate member of the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions. In addition, Fr. Brad is also on the national speaking team for CATECHUMENEON (catechumeneon.com). Other important things you need to know about him is that he has a love of liturgy and music but also a love of tacos and really any sort of Mexican food because, well, he is Mexican and his family (he has 3 brothers and a sister) makes the best food. He likes everything there is to music, whether creating, playing or listening to it. His priestly "style" is unrivaled by many as evidenced by his extensive hoodie collection and the boldly patterned socks he tends to wear. Fr. Bradley holds a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Loyola University Chicago and a Master of Divinity and Baccalaureate in Sacred Theology (S.T.B.) from the University of Saint Mary of the Lake. He is also a candidate for the degree of Doctor of Ministry.

Hope to see you there.

PARISH LENTEN PROJECT

During Lent, there are three words that come mind: Prayer, Sacrifice, and Almsgiving. These words remind us of what Jesus did for us. Would you like to become more like Christ? To help keep the season in our lives, there are ribbons representing the above three words on tables in the Gathering Space. As you come to Mass each week, please take a ribbon corresponding to your Lenten deed and tie it to the cross. Here are some examples for you to consider. PRAYER --attend Stations of the Cross, Eucharistic Adoration or daily Mass, take time to read the Bible, pray for family or special intentions, pray the rosary, visit church. SACRIFICE--give up sweets, that special cup of coffee, television, movies, or computer time, put the phone away during meal times, limit Facebook time, etc. Sacrifices can also be that one thing you don't want to do but should. ALMSGIVING (Offering)--donate money, food, or other needed items to a charitable organization, participate in Operation Rice Bowl, give your time and talent to someone or group in need. THE LENTEN FAST Ash Wednesday:

This day is commemorated by fasting and abstinence from meat.

Lenten Fridays: These days are marked by the discipline

of abstinence from meat.

The Lenten Fast is a fast of penance. Our self-denial is a way of emphasizing our

dependence on God.

THE PASCHAL FAST

“The Paschal Fast must be kept sacred. It should be celebrated everywhere on Good Friday, and where possible

should be prolonged throughout Holy Saturday.” (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy #110)

Good Friday through Holy Saturday: These days are marked by fasting and abstinence from meat. Please note that these days are not part of Lent or the Lenten Fast.

The Paschal Fast is a fast of anticipation. The observance of this most ancient fast is a solemn

way to prepare ourselves for the reception of the Easter Communion.

HOW DO WE FAST? The customary fast: This fast allows for only one full meal to be taken during the day. Two smaller meals are permitted, if necessary, to maintain strength according to one’s needs. Eating solid foods between meals is not permitted.

The fast of the early church: This fast begins upon rising. No meals are taken until the customary work day (5:00 PM) is ended. A glass of juice may be taken in the morning and simple liquids, such as water, coffee and tea during the day. The fast ends with a brief prayer followed by an adequate meal. For many this may work as a more natural way to fast.

Age Guidelines for fasting: Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics who have celebrated their 18th birthday and who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday.

HOW DO WE ABSTAIN? Traditional abstinence: This is the practice of refraining from meat and meat products. Abstinence as penance:` Entering fully into the spirit of the Lenten Fast and the Paschal Fast, we are also encouraged to abstain from other foods, practices or activities.

Age guidelines for abstinence: Abstinence is to be practiced by all who are 14 years of age and older.

Prepared by the Office of Worship, Diocese of Gary
