That’s not something that I’ve seen since the seminary! What do we mean when we say “Adoration”... Some of us perhaps may not be completely aware of the term, as this type of devotion has gone out of style in the years fol- lowing the Council. Simply put, Adoration is honoring the Eucha- ristic Presence of Jesus in the consecrated host! Jesus, at the Last Supper before His death, took bread and said “this is my body” he took a chalice and said “this is my blood” consecrating these elements into his flesh and blood! St John Paul II said that the Eucharist is the Church’s greatest treasure or as Vatican II put it, it contains “the Church’s entire spiritual wealth” (Presbyterum Or- dinis #5) We worship God in the Eucharist first of all at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, each time a Catholic priest consecrates the hosts and wine they become the body and blood of Christ, just like at the Last Supper with the disci- ples! The bloody sacrifice of the cross is made present again in an unbloody way, Jesus’s victory over sin and death is communicated to our lives today! But the Mass is not the only way we grow in our appreciation of the Holy Eucharist. Over the centuries the Church has taken great efforts to bring people to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament through public Eucharistic processions, Benedic- tions, and especially Eucharistic Adoration outside of Mass! APRIL 7, 2019 5TH SUNDAY OF LENT

Eucharistic Adoration Challenge When I first came to Old St. Pat’s two and a half years ago, I was astounded to find out that the parish had ALL NIGHT Adoration on First Fridays of the month! It is not unusual for parishes to have Adoration on First Friday and hopefully another day during the week… for a few hours during the day or evening… but ALL NIGHT?? That’s not something that I’ve seen since the seminary!

What do we mean when we say “Adoration”... Some of us perhaps may not be completely aware of the term, as this type of devotion has gone out of style in the years fol-lowing the Council. Simply put, Adoration is honoring the Eucha-ristic Presence of Jesus in the consecrated host! Jesus, at the Last Supper before His death, took bread and said “this is my body” he took a chalice and said “this is my blood” consecrating these elements into his flesh and blood! That in-stant the Jewish Passover ritual turned into a Catholic Mass: Jesus offered Himself as a non-bloody sacrifice the night before He would offer the bloody sacrifice on the cross of Golgotha!

St John Paul II said that the Eucharist is the Church’s greatest treasure or as Vatican II put it, it contains “the Church’s entire spiritual wealth” (Presbyterum Or-dinis #5) We worship God in the Eucharist first of all at the Holy

Sacrifice of the Mass, each time a Catholic priest consecrates the hosts and wine they become the body and blood of Christ, just like at the Last Supper with the disci-ples! The bloody sacrifice of the cross is made present again in an unbloody way, Jesus’s victory over sin and death is communicated to our lives today! THIS FRIDAY IS OUR LAST FISH FRY! BRING YOUR FAMILY

AND FRIENDS. WE LOOK FORWARD TO SERVING YOU!

CATCH IT BEFORE IT’S GONE!

Night adoration once a month. Seminarians would sign up for an hour, and there were at least two of us praying in front of Jesus in the chapel all night. Those late night hours took a lot of sacrifice, as most of us had classes and activities in the day, but they also turned out to be some of the great-est times of prayer and graces! In fact, it was Eucharistic Adoration that saved the seminary from burning down! One night, two seminarians were adoring in the main chapel, when they smelled smoke… some wires caught fire in the rafters! They alerted the rector and called the fire department, that night all of us were evacuating the books from the library below the chapel to save them from all the water from fire hoses! Because the fire was caught early the dam-age was minimal!

This brings us to Old St. Patrick’s First Fridays! I have noticed a handful of parishioners who have consistently signed up for the difficult hours in the middle of the night! It’s been mostly the same people over the last two years… and we really need fresh bodies before Jesus! If we want to be a grace filled parish then we need more people to commit to adora-tion at our church and especially in the middle of the night! My own hour has been 11pm-Midnight, only because I have health issues that affect sleep and need to get up to celebrate Benediction and Mass Saturday morning. But If we can get new people to cover the Mid-night to 6am hours, I will commit to coming at 3am in the night for a year and praying for you and your intentions! I believe Jesus will give me the grace to do that… If we can get all new names from

Midnight to 6am then I’ll do it… Can you imagine the graces that would come to our parish from the new people offering holy hours in the night? What do you say, can you spend an hour with Jesus once a month?

St. John Paul II said that Eucharis-tic Adoration brings Christ’s “consoling presence” into our lives! Don’t we need that now more than ever? Every moment in adoration… “every act of reverence, every gen-uflection that you make before the Blessed Sacrament, is important because it is an act of faith in Christ, an act of love for Christ.”2 Will you take me up on this chal-lenge, and sign up to be with Jesus in the middle of the night?
