Youth Work
Week 2019
Cimla Youth Club
Presentation Evening There was plenty of fun on offer during the last night of term with
the young people participating in games and activities. The young
people were presented with certificates to recognise their
achievements for example Welsh Culture, Arts & Crafts, pool
competition, Chess challenge and more. The evening ended with a
staff vs Young people game of Dodgeball – it was the only time this
term the staff actually won. The rematch is planned for next term.

Rachel Thomas from WCADA visited youth clubs across Neath Port
Talbot delivering session around positive quotes. The sessions were
designed to combat any negative thinking that young people might
have at some point in their life. The sessions were set up so that the
young people can identify what they would use as a coping method to
challenge their own negative thinking. Young people have identified
the different methods that they already use to help them with
negative thoughts such as, listening to their favourite music or
drawing pictures.
Flip chart paper was used so the young people all input their own
choices of positive quotes and the flip chart was then left at the
club so that it can be put on display for everyone to see.

Liberty Stadium Tour Young people from Taibach, Crynant and
Cwmllynfell Youth Clubs attended a tour of
the Liberty Stadium organised by Liam from
the Swansea City AFC Community Trust.
The youth clubs have been working with the
KICKS team throughout the term. Everyone
enjoyed learning about behind the scenes at the stadium. Young
people had opportunity to check out the home
changing rooms, the press room and the meeting
rooms. They also had a
chance to see how the
groundsmen maintain
the pitch and sit in the
dug out area.
Highlights included pretending to be interviewed in the press room,
having a look in a hospitality box, seeing the pitch up close and
sitting in the most expensive seats in the stadium.

Bryn Youth Club
Young people from Bryn Youth Club had a fun
filled evening participating in a youth club
Eisteddfod which consisted of a Welsh quiz, St
Patricks Day quiz (learning about the history of
the Welsh-born patron Saint of Ireland), guess
the score in the Six Nations match Wales vs
Ireland and best pronunciation of the famous
Welsh place name ‘Llanfair PG’. The activities
concluded with an alcohol awareness workshop which ended with a
game of beer goggles table tennis. The young
people and staff were timed playing table tennis
with and without the beer goggles on to highlight
the effects of alcohol with your decision making
and reaction time. Regan Miller and Lewis Hallam
both won prizes for their efforts, whilst also
gaining an increased knowledge in a variety of
subjects all while having fun!
Crynant Youth Club

from NPT where listened to and will be fed back to Welsh
Government.
Young people from Crynant Youth Club participated in a session to
promote Awareness of Young Carers. Young People discussed what it
is like being a Young Carer and how
taking stepping up to take responsibility
can impact on daily life and routine. The
young people enjoyed discussing the
different scenarios and watching the
videos of real life young carers. The
also looked at how you would manage your day being a young carer.
At the end of the session the group discussed how rewarding it is
and what support is available if anyone is or becomes a young carer.

Blaengwynfi Youth Club
The young people in Blaengwynfi celebrated Valentine’s Day by
making rice crispy cakes and chocolate hearts.
Bryncoch Youth Club
The young people had a ‘Bryncoch’s Big Bite’ competition delivered by
Activity Worker, Iestyn and Deputy Worker in Charge, Richard. The
event was initially to be a leek eating competition, but the leeks
were substituted for large spring onions. They were cleaned and
trimmed ready to be eaten. The contestants took it in turn to eat
the spring onions and were timed. The boys went first, and despite
them getting very competitive, Tom took the win in 1 minute and 6
seconds.
The girl’s competition went next but there was only ever going to be
one winner and that was Mia in an incredible time of just 19 seconds!

Cimla Youth Club
The young people of Cimla Youth Club have been getting creative this
term. Firstly, they made rings for Mother’s Day to show their
appreciation and love to the person who provides the care, love and
respect any mum would. Pictured is Bonnie along with Activity
Worker Steffan Newton.
Kai and Shay have also been busy and are pictured showing off their
model aeroplanes. The young people really enjoyed the activity which
took patience and some creativity. The planes were tested and the
all flew across the hall. Great job everyone!

Croeserw Youth Club
New young people visit Croeserw Youth
Club to engage in new activities. At the
club, they try to integrate young people
of all ages to ensure they’re treated with
the same respect. One of the favourite
activities they like to participate in is
football. Through this activity the participants
can learn new and develop existing skills. This
term the club have welcomes a new cohort of 11
year old primary school Year 6’s that have had the
opportunity to engage with existing attendees,
with all young people encouraging and supporting
each other in the activity which is a skill in itself!
Crynant Youth Club
The young people designed and created their own paper aeroplanes
using card, paper, pens and glitter. The
aeroplanes were designed to their own
style. Once finished, each young person
had the chance to throw theirs to see
how far it would fly. Activity Worker,
Iestyn Roberts, picked two winners. One
for the longest flight and the other for
the best design!

Crynant and Cwmllynfell Youth Clubs
The young people have been putting their
culinary skills to the test this term. They
made their own cookies. They learnt about
following correct systems in regards to
food hygiene and how everything works in
the kitchen, which helped the young
people a lot as some had no previous kitchen experience. The cookies
were shaped and cooked to their own designed. To go with their
cookies the young people made themselves the perfect
accompaniment, hot chocolate! If making cookies wasn’t original
enough, the young people have recently taken their kitchen skills to
the next level by making butter from double cream! The participants
were amazed at how easy and delicious homemade butter is! They
got to enjoy their homemade butter on fresh crumpets. Yum!

Glynneath Youth Club
Young people in Glynneath Youth Club had
a great time seeing who could silence the
critics, perform under pressure and
become the Fortnite Champion of
Glynneath! The competition consisted of
two games each where points were
allocated to how long they stayed alive, number of hits, and highest
final positions. Kieran delivered an outstanding game and racked up
a massive second round score putting him on top of the pile and
winning the Fortnite Funko prize!
The night was a great success but
unfortunately the challengers have already
started to question Keiran’s right to the
throne. It looks like this may become a
termly contest to see who gets the local
bragging rights!!!

Sandfields Youth Club
Young people in Sandfields have been spoilt for
choice in terms of physical activities this term
as part of a healthy lifestyle project. The boys
participated in a bleep test with Lucas Davies
winning after reaching level 18.1! Lucas is the
captain of the Welsh under 14’s basketball team. He is a role model
to the younger members and encouraged them to take part in the
healthy lifestyle project, with his participation motivating younger
members to get involved.
The youth club played a basketball match against Kenfig Cougars,
who had 4 Welsh internationals playing. In a
close encounter, Kenfig finally ran out winners
45-41. This was a fantastic result considering
the standard of opposition and the fact it was
some of the boys first game of basketball.
They now want to make it a regular game. Travis
Morgan and Tom Martin shared the ‘Most Valuable Player’ award.
Activity Worker Matthew Davies has been helping
the young people learn new skills for defence
through his self-defence/jujitsu sessions. The young
people learnt what to do if someone grabs them by
the throat or gets them in a head lock. This gives
the young people an increased knowledge of how to
defend themselves if this happened to them outside of club hours.

Crynant Youth Club
The club is usually limited to one PS4 with just FIFA as a game. The club were treated to
the Switch console which gives everyone an opportunity to have a game. Everyone enjoyed
playing Mario Kart and Smash Bros helping to bring the club together and provide healthy
competition.
Hywel Rose – Activity Worker.
The young people in Crynant Youth Club have been working hard this term towards a team
work accreditation. 3 young people from Crynant and 4 young people from Cwmllynfell Youth
Club managed to complete the 10 hours required in order to gain the accreditation over the
10 week term. Young people participated in many activities including stepping stones, pass
the mime, drain pipes, would you rather and the hula hoop challenge. Through carrying out
these activities young people learnt valuable lessons on the importance of effective
communication and working as a team. They discovered that through listening, sharing ideas
and working together they’re able to complete tasks that, at first, seemed impossible.
Charlotte Miller – Activity Worker.
Sandfields Youth Club
The tuck project is officially up and running. The young people of Sandfields Youth Club
have gathered a team to run a tuck shop and take on the big responsibilities! They have
a manager, creative director, accountant and a work team. These young people are
extremely enthusiastic to get their business up and running! Look out for future ‘The

Seven Sisters Youth Club
The young people had a late Pancake Day celebration by making their very own
pancakes. The young people loved having the opportunity to prepare, cook and
especially eat the pancakes. Everyone had at least one, with many young people
coming back for seconds!
Charlotte Miller – Activity Worker.
Taibach Youth Club
The youth club are running monthly forum meetings, and it’s been decided that there’ll be
a different chair at each of the meetings. At a recent forum, Jodie was given the role as
chair and she did an excellent job of it. Topics discussed included holding a charity pool
competition and also a plastic litter pick around the outside of the club.
A netball shootout competition was held with the young people taking shots from
different distances and angles of 2 metres, 4 metres and finally 6 metres. There was a
prize on offer for anyone that had the longest shot in. Nobody succeeded on the 6 metre
distance so no prize was won. Despite no winner it was an eventful night.
Sandfields Youth Club
The young people participated in a sewing activity which provided a cheap and very
creative way to make a lovely gift for the most special person in your life on Mother’s
Day. Sewing skills can come in very useful and is a dying art.
Jo Thomas-Wellington – Activity Worker.
The young people have participated in fitness sessions for a number of weeks and
