Day 3 KNYSNA to ALBERTINIA via MOSSEL BAY (±160km)Depart the hotel after breakfast, and head for the historical harbour town of Mossel Bay which was the first place that Europeans landed on South African soil. Aiming to find the trade route to India, the Portuguese Bartolomeu Dias and his crew landed at Mossel Bay on 3rd February 1488.

Visit the Dias Museum Complex which is made up of several different museums, among them the Shell and Maritime Museums. The Maritime Museum sports a life-sized replica of the ship that Dias sailed in 1488. In 1987 this replica was sailed from Lisbon to Mossel Bay as part of the Dias88 festival commemorating the 500th anniversary of Dias’ landing.

At the centre of the museum complex is the Post Office Tree. An ancient Milkwood tree that has served as a post office since 1500 when a note was left for the Commander of the 3rd East India Fleet, Joao De Nova by a fellow sailor, Pedro De Ataide, warning him of impending dangers awaiting him in India. The note was discovered by De Nova by chance in 1501. Today one can still post a note to loved ones from the tree.

Day 3 | TuesdayKRUGER GATE to MTHETHOMUSHA GAME RESERVE via KRUGER NATIONAL PARK (±110km)After breakfast journey through the magnificent expanses of the Kruger National Park.

The Kruger National Park harmoniously balances flat bushveld with rolling savanna and protects a spectacular diversity of fauna and flora which include: 147 mammals, 114 reptiles and 336 tree species, most of which are endemic to the park. Our route will take us to Skukuzu, exiting through Melelane Gate on towards Mthethomusha Game Reserve, on the southern border of the Kruger National Park. Lunch (own account) in the park.

Set against the magnificent Malelane Mountains with the “Big Five” wandering its 8,000 hectare, Mthetomusha Game Reserve is an inspiring place. It’s a place of ancient paths once walked by the first people of Africa, the San Bushmen.

A late afternoon open vehicle game drive with a professional guide will have you traversing through the reserve searching for friends and foe in the wild and viewing an exhibition of more than 200 San rock paintings discovered on the property.

Day 4 | Wednesday MTHETHOMUSHA GAME RESERVE to JOHANNESBURG via KAAPSEHOOP (±390km)Before savouring an early breakfast you will have another opportunity to spot and photograph the game on an open vehicle morning game drive.

Departing Mthetomusha Game Reserve we travel to Kaapsehoop, a mountain village with a storybook charm.

Enjoy the lovely views of the de Kaap Valley Mountains while having lunch (own account) at the reserve. Staying off the beaten track we continue our journey onto Kaapsehoop.

When the sun shines, Kaapsehoop is the setting for a fairytale or romance novel, but when the mist rolls in over the village, it can look really sinister, making it easy to see why the now plateau of hope, was once dubbed Duiwel’s Kantoor (Devil’s office).

Adding to the mystery is a population of wild horses that roam the surrounding forest and often trot into the town to graze in the locals’ yards.

The feral horses have been part of Kaapsehoop for over 100 years. The town began as a miner’s camp in 1882, then changed to a thriving forestry village, but grew very little in size.

The population of horses outnumbers the human inhabitants. Kaapsehoop is also the breeding place of the rare Blue Swallow, one of two breeding spots in South Africa. The breeding Blue Swallow and other rare species attract many a bird enthusiast to the village.

A scenic drive through Mpumalanga sees us back in Johannesburg where we will say Hamba kahle, at your hotel or at O.R. Tambo International Airport in the late afternoon.
