Kody Bender is the 8th Elyria Pioneer to win the coveted Mr. BasketballAward. He capped his spectacular career at Elyria by vaulting to #3overall in the school’s all-time scoring list. Kody was also a tremendousstudent in the classroom, where he compiled a 3.8 GPA. He is continu-ing his basketball career at the college level at West Liberty State.

AuBree LaForce had a remarkable senior year at Vermilion to win theMiss Basketball Award. AuBree averaged just under 17 points per gameduring the 12-13 season. She finished her great high school career with1,199 points. She excelled in the classroom as well with a 4.3 GPA. Sheis continuing her basketball career at Case Western Reserve University.She is the 3rd Lady Sailor to win the Miss Basketball Award.

2013 doesn’t end for anothermonth or so, a new “year”will start well ahead ofJanuary 1, 2014. If the oldsaying is indeed “wait ‘tilnext year”, then “next year”is now upon us for the areaboys high school basketballteams that have been anx-iously awaiting the start ofthis season since the last oneended back in early March. Ihave been anxious for “nextyear” on the hardwood sincethat time as well, so let’s takea look at what’s in store forthe area squads.

We begin in Elyria, wherethe Pioneers come off an 18win season, but must look toreplace the scoring and lead-ership of Mr. Basketball2013 Kody Bender. Elyriacoach Brett Larrick willcount on his outstandingguard Isaiah Walton, alreadya Division 1 signee, as wellas returnees AnthonyDuckett, Hunter Parsh andJarred Schultz, to lead thePioneers to another success-ful season. Things will beinteresting in Lorain, asJohn Rositano returns as theboys head coach, after manyyears at Amherst leading theLady Comets. The Titansfinished 11-13 last year, buthave some outstanding talentin returnees Rashod Berry,and Eddie Williamson withGerald Howard expected tocontribute as well. Lorainwill certainly develop overthe course of the season.

One of the great stories ofthe 12-13 season was themagnificent season atColumbia, which racked up

a 23-2 season under first yearhead coach Larry Babics,and won the Stripes Divisonchampionship in the Patriot

Athletic Conference.Stalwarts such as JayBanyasz, Brandon Severoand David Delahunty will be

back for the Raiders.Another great season out ofthe PAC Stripes Division wasOberlin, who won theWooster District champi-onship, and finished the yearat 18-8. While Kurt Russellneeds to replace JasonMoore, he has tremendousreturnees in Charles Lewis,Devaunte Houghland andMalcolm Allen. Clearviewwill certainly be in the thickof things in the Stripes, asveteran coach John Szalaywelcomes back some out-standing talent includingGerrell Williams, DaimonKnowles and Eric Burkey.And coach Szalay will alsohave a valuable assistant sit-ting next to him this year, asBob Walsh will return to theplace where his legendaryLorain County career began,on the Clearview bench,working alongside coachSzalay. Lutheran West wasvery competitive under AlanJanuzzi last year and figuresto be formidable in theStripes race, while Brooklynand Fairview look torebound off tough seasonslast year.

In the Stars Division,Firelands is the defendingchampion, and the Falconsnow look to build off thatsuccess under second yearhead coach Brett Bartlett.Logan Sittinger, Cole Sklarekand Casey Smith are keyreturnees for Firelands, as theFalcons try to defend theirtitle. Keystone hovered nearthe .500 mark last year, andanother second year headcoach, the Wildcats JeffHolzauer will build his teamaround CJ Conrad, Matt

Dylan Kidd is a keyreturnee as is Chase Bealerwho missed all last year forthe Dukes with a knee injury.Another team that fell belowthe .500 mark wasBrookside so the Cards willbe on a mission to have awinning season this year.Brent Schrempf welcomesback Kelvin Jones, MittoAgosto and Cameron Drewto build around. Buckeyeand Black River will roundout the Stars Division.

The two Lorain Countyteams in the SouthwesternConference didn’t contendfor the conference crown, buthad respectable seasons. AtAmherst, the Comets hov-ered at or around .500 allyear, and coach John Srnisexpects to take a step forwardthis season with severalreturnees including thetremendous Garrett Klekota,and also Adam Srnis andMatt Kneisel. Avon Lakewas also very competitivelast year, and coach EricSmith will welcome severalguys back for the Shoremenincluding Seth Muck, BradHamilton and ChristianJones. Brecksville won theSWC last year (and theMidview District Title aswell) and has some outstand-ing talent returning, as do theWestlake Demons underhead coach Shawn Hood.Olmsted Falls, the consoli-dated Berea/Midpark andNorth Olmsted are the otherthree teams in the league.

It was a great race in theWest Shore last year, where

Rocky River and Avonshared the conference cham-pionship. Avon head coach

Kevin Supara lost severalplayers off that championshipteam, but returns sharpshoot-er Brian Kelly, as well as sen-ior Jordan Lawrence andZack Torbert to lead theEagles attack. ElyriaCatholic will welcome PhilKuchta back to the bench ashead coach, and it promisesto be an interesting year forthe Panthers who come off a13-12 season. Jeremy Holleywill be back on the hardwoodafter sitting out last year dueto injury, and Ceeven Sheltonand Connor Riddell will addsome punch to the lineup aswell. Midview was around.500 throughout the 12-13campaign, but lost their pri-mary weapon Wes Davic tograduation. Troy DiFrancowill rely on veterans such as

long range bomber GrantOvery, as well as MattRandolph and Jack Duffner

to keep the Middies in theWSC hunt. Vermilion headsinto the year with highhopes. Kurt Habermehl’sSailors were 12-12 last year,but return some terrific talentin Cameron Kuhn, as well asForrest Boyd and KyleNader. It was rough sleddingfor North Ridgeville underfirst year head coach BryanMorgan last season, but theRangers have some key guysback including DennisMillgard, Matt Clark andNolan Freeman, so the wintotal may climb in this cam-paign. Bay and Lakewoodwill be the other teams in theWest Shore in ’13-14.

At Open Door, headcoach Todd Wright knowsDanny Stintsman andAndrew Patterson will be key

pieces for the Patriots, asthey look to rebound fromwhat was a tough campaign

last season. For Lake Ridge,also coming off a challengingcampaign last year, ChrisMiller had an outstandingyear last season and will becounted on to provide leader-ship for the Royals. At FirstBaptist, Chase Parker hadsome big games last year,and he will lead the Sabres,who will try to reverse theirfortunes from a rough 12-13campaign.

Looking at the names men-tioned in the above articlethere is going to be some ter-rific talent on the hardwoodthis year. No wonder coach-es were looking forward to“next year” at the end oftournament time last year.“Next year” has indeedarrived, long before January1st. Let’s get it cranked up!

There will be three newcoaches in Lorain CountyGirls basketball for theupcoming 2013-2014 season.Last season Amherst lost toElyria in the district semifi-nals in the division 1 districttournament held at EC. Whoknew at the time that JohnRositano and Mike Walshwould both be coaching forthe final time vs. one anotherthat evening. John left thegirls job at Amherst tobecome the head boys coachat Lorain High and MikeWalsh stepped down atElyria to become an assistantfor the Elyria High boys andCoach Brett Larrick. Inanother coaching change,longtime boys coach TomThompson will be back onthe sidelines as the new headcoach at Columbia HighSchool.

Taking over for Rositano atAmherst Steele is KevinCollins, last season they went17-5 before bowing out toElyria. He returns BrookeWallace, last year as a sopho-more she averaged 12 pointsand 9 rebounds a game.Some of the other returnersinclude Sher Champe,Mallory Sliman, BriannaCrapo and GabrielleBasinski.

Bryan Arth is the new headcoach for the Elyria LadyPioneers; Arth has had a verysuccessful coaching career innortheast Ohio at several dif-ferent schools. His resumeincludes a state champi-onship as head coach atCleveland Central Catholic.

Tom Thompson returns to

the sidelines at Columbia.Thompson who’s previouslycoached the boys atStrongsville and Rocky Riverinherits a Raiders club whofinished last season at 12-11.Some of his returners includeseniors Emily Viccaroni andAlexis Bycznski, juniorsAmy Mirecki, Shelby Friedeland sophomore AlisonSchafer. Schafer averagednearly 15ppg last season.

Brookside comes off an 8-15 record including 7-9 inthe PAC. Three of the fivestarters for the Cards return

this year including seniorsErika Elias and AriannaSanchez and junior VanessaVanzant. Elias averagednearly 11ppg and 4 assists,Sanchez kicked in with 8ppgand 10 boards per contest.Vanzant is a very strongdefensive player and averages3 steals per game. CoachTom Moyer is back for hissecond season behind thebench for the Cards.

Over at Avon Lake, DaveZvara returns to coach theShoregals who last year went4-19 overall and 2-12 in the

SWC. Returning starters areseniors Logan LeDuc andEmily Nicholas and juniorAli Balthaser. Another keyreturner is junior Kay Butrey;the Shoregals lost three sen-iors from last year’s team.Players looking to help thisyear from last year’s JV teaminclude juniors GiannaGuzzo and Michaela Frankand sophomores SarahWinkel and HannahNicholas. According toZvara team quickness andoverall depth are some of thestrengths of this year’s team.

TheLady Panthers went 21-5overall last season.Returning starters includesophomore Riley Schill 10.8ppg, 4.6 rebounds and 6assists per game.Sophomore Josie Carandangbrings 7ppg, 5 rebounds and3 assists per game from lastyear as a freshmen.

Amy Esser returns toNorth Ridgeville, her teamwent 6-17 last year. Alsoreturning for the LadyRangers are senior IsabellaPecchia and junior AlyssaRiley. Pecchia averaged 8ppg and 8 boards a game lastyear as a junior. She battledwith an ankle injury formuch of the season, she is100% healthy this year andthe Rangers are counting onher. Riley averaged 10ppglast season along with 42three pointers. OverallCoach Esser is optimistic thisseason they hope to blendtheir returning talent andtheir young players to have agood season.

At Firelands long timecoach Dave Kudela bringsback a squad that went 17-6overall and 15-1 in the PAC.Individuals coming backinclude seniors CaseyMorrissette and Alyssa

Melendez. Morrissette had12ppg and 4 boards last sea-son, Melendez avg 3ppg.Sophomore Keely Hall had7ppg and 7 rebounds pergame last season. Otherswith experience returning areseniors Becky Myers andHaleigh Bari. Kudela antici-pates having a strong teamthat has depth this seasonwith the addition of severalJV players that went 18-2 lastyear.

Elsewhere in the countyAvon returns a lot of youngplayers who gained experi-ence last year for CoachMeghan Banks.

Nick Dimacchia alwayshas a competitive team atClearview, last year they hada very good season and theywill try to improve on that.

Scott Terry’s KeystoneLady Wildcats took theirlumps last year as they werevery very young. The groupis a year older and with theincoming freshmen classcoming in they should bebetter this season.

Lake Ridge Academywent all the way to theregionals last season beforebowing out to perennialpower Hiland at theMassillon Perry regional.Coach Lisa Medvetz and herteam will have a tough act tofollow coming off that out-standing season.

Midview is hoping for bet-ter things this year after sometough seasons the last coupleof years.

Kari Cooley returns for hersecond season as the headcoach of the OberlinPhoenix.

Likewise Colin Irish willbe back for his second sea-son with Vermilion, theLady Sailors had an out-standing season last yearmaking it all the way to thedistrict championship gamelast March in Elyria.

Chris Reutepohler willcontinue to try and getWellington to improve.Likewise Bud Turner andRandy Mohr look forimprovement at Open Doorand First Baptist.

Those were among the firstwords uttered by MikeBrown at an April 24 pressconference to announce hehad been rehired as Cavalierscoach.

They’ve been repeated, inone form or another, dozensof times since — and notjust by Brown.

From Anderson Varejao toTristan Thompson to AlonzoGee to even jaded membersof the media, everyone, itseems, is buying intoBrown’s defense-first mantra.

plan and philosophy, but itwasn’t readily apparent. Onenight Cavs guards wentunder screens, the next nightthey went over. One night thebig men popped out to help,the next they retreated to pro-tect the basket.

Add in that guards Irvingand Dion Waiters sometimeslooked like bullfighters wav-ing a cape as their man drovepast them — plus the factCleveland’s scatterbrainedrotations often left the oppo-nent’s best shooters wideopen — and the Cavs werethe worst defensive team inthe league last season.

That will change.Actually, it’s already

changed.

Ask Brown about defenseand his answers go on andon, the excitement in hisvoice building as he talksabout concepts like “show-ing,” “tagging” and “havingfive guys on a string.”

His practice sessions canbe even longer. Early in thepreseason, media memberswere kept waiting for fourhours as Brown held a prac-tice, stopped it for lengthyexplanations and then heldan even longer film session.

“I loved every minute ofit,” Irving said. “Every sixhours of it. It’s more of amental push, a mental barrieryou have to get through. He’sour coach and we’re the play-ers.”

revolutionary, but they arestrict, consistent and wellthought out. They’ve alsobeen successful.

Guards always fight overthe top of screens. Big men“show” to slow down theopposing guard or make himtake a little wider route,which gives Cleveland’sperimeter defenders time torecover. Cavs big men thenhustle back to their man,knowing a third defender has“opened up” and will bethere to help, if needed.

There is tons more, but allthe principles and theoriescome back to one of the mostbasic themes in basketball:Stop your man. If you can dothat, a lot of double-teamsand weak-side help won’t beneeded. The defense won’talways be scrambling, tryingto recover.

“I like to teach,” Brownsaid. “In my opinion, theseguys seem eager and willingto learn.

“Everybody, I believe,wants to win,” he added. “Inthis league, I believe youhave to defend to win.”

The 43-year-old Brownknows a thing or two aboutwinning. He led the Cavs toa 272-138 regular-seasonrecord in his five-year stintfrom 2005-10, including 66-and 61-win seasons in hisfinal two years, and his .663winning percentage is thebest in franchise history.

Brown’s teams have alsowon at least one playoffseries in every full season hehas coached — he spent afull season in charge of theLos Angeles Lakers in 2011-12 and was fired early in2012-13 — making him the

only coach in NBA historywith a minimum of fiveyears experience to hold thatdistinction.

But even more impressivethan his 314-167 lifetimerecord (.652) in the regularseason, the man who led theCavs to the 2007 NBA Finalsseems much more comfort-able, confident and open ashe begins his second stint inCleveland.

Beyond that, Brown issecure enough to know hisstrengths and weakness. He’snot the greatest offensivemind in the world, but he’ssmart enough to trust hisassistants — and his players.

Brown will give his troopsfreedom and even tolerate afew mistakes at the offensiveend — as long as his guysare busting their backsides atthe defensive end.

Plus, he’s got Irving, whois so talented with the ball inhis hands he often makessomething out of nothing.

“Our movement on offenseis such that I’m picking andchoosing my spots,” Irvingsaid. “We have enough talentto score points.

“Right now, our focus is onthe defensive end and gettingstops and me holding myman to a limited amount ofpoints. The offense will takecare of itself.”

Irving almost singlehand-edly won the Cavs a handfulof games over his first twoseasons, but there werenights when he scored 30points and also gave up thatmany, though they were oftendivided between the oppos-ing team’s starting pointguard and backup.

This season, Irving’s scor-ing average will likely beclose to the 22.5 points heput up a year ago, but with ahealthy Varejao, an improved

Waiters and the addition ofAndrew Bynum and JarrettJack, his assist averageshould jump considerablyfrom the 5.9 he averaged in2012-13.

“I have a goal of averagingin the seven to nine range,”he said. “I have a lot of con-fidence in my teammates thatwe can get easy buckets andguys can make plays for me.

“We’ve got talent on thisteam. My assists should goup enough. I’m pretty sureI’ll take care of that depart-ment.”

Irving’s bigger goal, as hebluntly stated on media daythis year and has repeated onseveral occasions, is “to bethe best player in the NBA.”

In the offseason, the 6-foot-3, 191-pounder came tothe conclusion that in orderfor his name to even be men-tioned among the best, hehad to lead the Cavs to amuch better record than the21-45 and 24-58 marks theyhad in his first two years inthe league.

“After the season, Ireminded myself that with(wanting to be the best)comes a lot of responsibilityon myself,” Irving said. “Ican’t do it without my team-

mates. The most importantthing is we have to wingames and make the playoffs.

“When I said that com-ment, I meant it,” he added.“But I can’t do it without myteammates.”

In the end, Brown’s defen-sive emphasis and desire towin are totally intertwinedwith Irving’s quest to be thebest and also to win. TheCavs can’t win consistentlywithout playing defense,while Irving can’t be the bestwithout consistent winning.

“We definitely have thepieces this year, whetheryoung or old or young, oldveterans,” Irving said.

“We have a chance to dosomething special,” headded. “Our youth is goingto keep us going.”

Soon after, Irving saidsomething that had to bemusic to Brown’s defensive-minded ears.

“This year, we have the tal-ent to outscore teams,” hesaid. “But we have a defen-sive-minded coach and ourfocus is on that end of thefloor.

“If we want to achieve ourgoals, our focus has to be onthat end of the floor.”
