As the population in the Kootenay Boundary grows more grey, so do the men and women who have doctored the communities within for so many years.
With many local physi-cians nearing the age of retirement alongside baby boomer patients, the call is out to draw more family practise doctors to the West Kootenay region.
But it takes a community to muster new doctors.
That is the baseline for the Kootenay Boundary Division of Family Practise’s recruit-ment program that is work-ing behind-the-scenes to bring in more doctors that are needed to care for an ag-ing populace.
The general trend is that doctors are retiring, says Deryn Collier, and because patients are aging, care is more complex and doctors need to spend more time with each patient.
“The result is we need more doctors,” explained Collier, the division’s recruit-ment program manager.
She said it’s really impor-tant to recognize that doctors who are retiring worked long and hard serving the region, and they loved living here.
“It’s not that there’s a big
exodus of doctors,” she con-tinued. “Most have worked their whole careers here and are ready to enjoy the fruits of their labour.”
When doctors do come to the region to practise, of-ten they see fewer patients because the level of care re-quired to tend to the elderly can be complicated and quite time consuming.
That means more practi-tioners are essential to look after an increasing number of aging patients with special-ized care needs.
Additionally, younger doc-tors are looking for more work-life balance, Collier noted, adding that they
may not be willing to work as many hours as the older doctors.
She emphasizes that com-munity partnerships are key to successful recruitment of family doctors.
“There’s the health au-thority and division of local doctors,” she said. “But what really brings people to a com-munity is if the community is involved in recruitment. It’s only the people who live there and who love it, who can convince other people to joint them. That’s the mes-sage we are highlighting.”
Collier has presented to community groups, munici-palities and businesses, to engage people who are pas-sionate about where they live and willing to play an active role in recruiting doctors to the area.
“What we are really hop-ing is when someone is inter-ested, for example, in com-ing to Trail, that people will come forward to showcase their community. Have that person tour the schools and meet teachers or drive up to the ski hill and all the other great outdoor areas. The point is for a community member to show the many great reasons for a physician and family to choose to move there.”
The message to all 13 com-munities in the division’s
region is, “you need to get involved and everyone has a piece in this,” Collier added. “Nobody else can do it.”
The Kootenay Boundary Division of Family Practise was developed as part of a 2008 province-wide initia-tive to pull community-based groups of doctors together to help improve health in the region.
The organization is cur-rently in a Phase 1 project plan for recruitment and retention of physicians that includes enhanced coordi-nation between provincial and regional recruitment teams to provide hands on support for division mem-bers; recruitment events that focus on the current status and future direction of re-tention planning within the Kootenay Boundary; and the development of promotional materials and advertising to help drive interest in the re-gion at a provincial, national and international level.
The division represents family physicians in Castle-gar, Christina Lake, Fruitvale, Grand Forks, Greenwood, Kaslo, Midway, Nakusp, Nelson, New Denver, Rock Creek, Rossland, Salmo, and Trail.
Membership includes 114 doctors and nurse practitio-ners in 13 communities, with 42 located in Greater Trail.

GreG NesteroffWest Kootenay Advertiser
NEW DENVER — As the Nikkei Me-morial Internment Centre in New Den-ver marked its 20th anniversary Saturday, one of its founders recalled how a key building was nearly lost.
Roy Inouye, past president of the Na-tional Association of Japanese Cana-dians, told the large crowd that Kyowakai Hall, built in 1943 as a communal bath-house but used in-stead as a community centre, was going to be burned down in the early 1990s.
Inouye convinced Buddhist church el-ders to instead pre-serve the building for its historic value — but had no idea where the money would come from.
Fortunately, the Japanese Canadian Redress Foundation, created a few years earlier to administer a $12 million com-munity fund that was part of a federal set-tlement, came to the rescue. Their view, Inoyue said, was “Let us not think of it as a project for New Den-ver. Let’s make it a national project.”
Today Kyowakai Hall is home to a se-ries of exhibits on the internment of Japa-nese Canadians in West Kootenay. It is also still a function-ing Buddhist temple.
The centre itself, Inouye said, is the only one of its kind in North America. It has since been de-clared a national his-toric site.
“Thanks to the residents of New Denver for taking care of the Japanese Canadians during their interment and for taking care of the site now,” Inouye told those gathered. “We must have these sites that the atrocities put upon the Japanese people by the govern-ment will never hap-pen again.”
Thousands of Japanese Canadi-ans were exiled from the Lower Mainland to the interior dur-ing World War II, to be housed in ghost towns and camps in difficult conditions, many crammed into poorly heated shacks.
Project manager Ken Butler recalled that it only took about a year to put the entire centre to-gether, which includ-
ed moving original shacks onto the site.
Interpreting the story was a challenge, he said, but was helped by the discov-ery in a local garage of a trunk filled with documents that “told the story of upheaval and traumatic events that transpired.”
Former internees who still lived in New Denver were a “guid-ing influence” on the project. “There were many times during the interview pro-cess with elders that all you could do was
cry,” Butler said. He also recalled
the influence of Roy Tomomichi Sumi, who designed a peace garden for the centre in a style known as karesansui (“dried-up water scenery”).
Sumi was interned at Rosebery and took seedlings from his gardens to Vancou-ver, where he worked for the Nitobe Me-morial Gardens at the University of BC. Some of those plants then came back to New Denver for the Nikkei centre.

Sculpture Talk
Day by Day (resin compound)
Once the artists have been selected for Sculpturewalk they are asked to provide di-mensions of their entry along with a maquette or drawing or photos of the work in prog-ress. is has always been challenging for Québec artist Regine Neumann – because she deliberately doesn’t know what form the nished work will take. It’s safe to say how-ever, like her entry last year ti-tled Rhythm of Being, the end result will be visually appeal-ing, evocative and emotive. e aptly named Day by Day re ects Neumann’s approach. “ e material I use has its own rhythm. It literally grows day to day, and I have to listen to the piece as it conveys its form. We need to collaborate, and o en it is two steps forward and three back. So there is a limit to what can be done on
a daily basis. at’s one reason I usually undertake a num-ber of works at once. ere is dialogue between myself and each sculpture – regardless of the medium - as we proceed cooperatively in ts and starts towards a nish.” is year, Neumann is work-ing with modern resin com-pounds that are lighter and show better than the winter-stone she displayed last year. Adding pigmentation and marble dust as she progresses from an initial wire armature, the strength and versatility of the material permits Neu-mann’s approach of ongoing adaptation. Artist and sculp-ture collectively intimate what the end result might be.“ ere is no narrative at-tached to my piece, it doesn’t represent anything,” says Neumann disarmingly. “It is meant simply to be an invita-tion. I encourage the viewer to explore the form, movement and space with their hands and their eyes. My intent is for exploration and, hopefully, appreciation by and for the senses. To admire and enjoy the meandering, asymmetric lines and planes as they twist and intertwine, compliment-ing the created spaces, that is my intent.“ e work I’m showing speaks of time and the present mo-ment, of the continuity of life. Simplicity and complexity co-exist in the here and now, which always has been and will be the reality of existence.”Visually appealing in its light-ness of colour and texture, Day by Day’s curving lines and occasionally knotted gra-
dations convey delicacy and strength simultaneously. Neu-mann’s achievement is the co-hesion of them and the space they create, realizing rhythmic movement and translucence in a stationary work. Her style has been in uenced by numerous sculptors, in-cluding the German sculptor, theorist, performance artist and pedagogue Joseph Beuys. Neumann clari es that his in- uence lies less in his actual artwork than in his philoso-phy and theory – his concept of “social sculpture” where everyone is an artist. e theory being that society “art” inherently in uences political, philosophical and social out-comes.Other inspiration comes from the work and/or writings of sculptors like Henry Moore, Naum Gabo and Laslo Mo-holy- Nagy, to name a few. Her favourite living sculptor is the Indian-born Sir Anish Kapoor. Knighted by the Brit-ish government in 2013 – he has lived in London for many years – he is renowned for his geometric , biomorphic, o en hugely-scaled installations/architectural collaborations in England and around the world. Contemporary Japa-nese bamboo art and certain ceramic processes also stimu-late her creativity and vision.Clearly though, Neumann is her own artist. Her ability to incorporate approaches from acknowledged sculpting gi-ants while forging her own distinctive style using contem-porary materials and process-es de nes her artistic identity.“I would characterize my work as following the con-cept of concretion. at is, the process of building up, con-densing, thickening, growing together. is is true whether I’m using self-curing materials as I’ve done here, or mediums like cardboard, paper or bre. What I want to achieve is a sculpture that is tactile and full of life.” She has succeeded admirably with the vibrant, glorious Day by Day.

Welcome to our regular feature introducing the artists behind the sculptures in this year’s Castlegar SculptureWalk.
Regine Neumann
Dreamer (stainless steel)
As an indication of its grow-ing stature, this year’s Sculp-turewalk features another rst: the event has moved beyond Canada and the United States to welcome a work from an inter-national artist, Belgium metal maestro Rik Beuselinck.
Like a number of other pieces on display this year, Beuselinck’s sculpture Dreamer comes from the Sioux Falls 2013 showcase. It was recognized with a third place distinction in the Best of Show – Other Mate-rials category there.
Beuselinck works exclu-sively in various types of metal. From stainless steel to corten steel (weathering steel; steel al-loys developed to form a stable, rust-like appearance a er sev-
eral years in the elements) and occasionally copper and brass, he creates sculptures that stem from his heart and his prevail-ing emotion/state of mind when he begins.
“ I am self taught. From my mid-teen years when I was re-constructing and recon guring old bicycles I knew that this is what I would do, and metal would be my material,” he says. “My years of experience have coalesced into the knowledge that, while metal holds no se-crets for me, it is the elixir of life.
“I trust my deepest emotions to it. As an emotional, soulful person, creating a work of art from this tough, hard, heavy mineral from the earth is an inner search of myself. I liken it to talking with your hands through the emotion of the heart and the gut. e smallest visual stimulus – a pebble in a stream, a bird free in the sky – will inspire me to create some-thing visible and tangible. Al-ways, the nished work will be based on the moment, and the feeling I’ve got, when I begin to forge the raw material into a work of art.”
His scope and dexterity of style is broad and expansive. From abstract conceptual works that hint at his vision – Puberty, Obviate, for example - to fully realized proportional rendi-tions of humans and animals
like Average Joe, Happy Lady, and Eagle, Beuselinck’s sculp-tures brim with emotive mean-ing. As he says, “Sometimes they are crude and powerful, at other times smooth and vel-vety. My emotional condition and the particular expression I would like to give the sculpture is the determinant.”
Dreamer displays elements of both ends of Beuselinck’s sculpting spectrum. All shiny stainless steel, the six foot gure stands triumphantly and con- dently, legs apart and hands tucked into the pockets of his adorned coat. e upturned collar tightly surrounds an angular, alien-like head with minimal facial detail, leaving the viewer to ponder what the thoughts/dreams might be. It is, like so many of his works, pro-vocative and appealing at the same time.
As a general rule, Beuselinck prefers to create larger sculp-tures, like the monumental Children Play in the Waves. A semi-abstract in corten steel, it towers thirty feet above the Bel-gian landscape. But he is equally at home working on a smaller scale. Forever and Free as a Bird are two pieces that impart his emotive resonance compactly. Occasionally, he also fashions innovative water fountains of varying sizes, along with one of a kind grave monuments and signs for businesses.
“ Everything I sculpt comes from the heart and the soul,’ he says simply. “ ere are no moulds. Each sculpture speaks uniquely from my emotional state.” e dream of his initial work at Sculpturewalk is big, bold and brave, not unlike the skill and talent of its creator.

All across B.C. there is outdoor adventure, stunning scenery, and amazing communi-ties awaiting discov-ery. Take one of those small communities and add a riverside campground, arts, and music and you have all the ingredients for one incredible summer weekend.
Nestled on the banks of the Kettle River sits the small farming communi-ty of Rock Creek. It is in this sleepy little town that two B.C. boys, Kris Hargrave and Kia Zahrabi, had the dream of starting a music festival: e Ponderosa Arts & Mu-sic Festival. at festi-val is now heading into its second year, hap-pening August 22 to 24 at the Rock Creek Fairgrounds.
“Everything about the area is perfect for Ponderosa. You have a picturesque festival site that is full of character and you have camp-ing right on the river. It is a beautiful place. We picture Ponderosa Festival as a breath of fresh air, a place where amazing artists, lo-cals, and beautiful B.C. countryside can come together to celebrate
music and art,” said festival co-founder-Hargrave.
Rock Creek is a short drive from the Okanagan town of Osoyoos, in fact it is close enough that in the summer months you can practically taste the peaches and smell the sunscreen. Coming to Rock Creek from Vancouver, Os-oyoos is a must stop. Grab a bottle of wine, some fresh fruit and get ready to step back in time. If you are coming from Kelowna set your cruse con-trol and get ready for an hour and a half of open road freedom down Highway 33.
e organizers say the philosophy of Ponderosa is to create a more intimate mu-sic experience and to build an event that tru-ly reconnects people with music and arts.
“We have been hearing a lot of nega-tive publicity for other festivals in the news recently. What we’ve been aiming to do is create a welcoming and intimate setting for those who love the outdoors as well as the culture of arts and mu-sic,” says Kia Zahrabi, festival co-founder,
“We’re reaching out to those who are look-ing for a new festival experience or those who have yet to go to a festival because of this negative buzz. We’re showing people that there is a better, more laid back type of festi-val experience without long line ups, massive crowds, and big-time corporate sponsors.”
is year features omore than 25 artists from across Canada and welcomes a few from south of the bor-der.
“We have an un-believable number of talented artists living right in our backyard,” says Hargrave. “We believe in every band performing at Ponder-osa. A lot of thought went into inviting each act. We want to be known as the festival you come to to discov-er great music one that supports the up-and-comer. We strive to be di erent and hope people will appreciate and support that mis-sion.”
e weekend will also be packed with other activities such as morning yoga classes, a pancake breakfast, a moustache and beard competition, and live

The Arrow Lakes Therapeutic Riding Association will hold its first Equine Empowerment Camp this summer in partnership with The Pass Creek Regional Exhibi-tion Society.
The camp is designed to of-fer participants with challenges individualized therapy with an holistic approach. Lessons will be offered in riding, grooming, or simply learning about the horse in a safe and comfortable environment. Participants may benefit mentally, emotionally or physically.
Applications are being accept-ed for youth between the ages of five and 19 who would benefit from therapeutic riding. Thanks to a grant from Columbia Basin Trust, the camp will be offered free of charge.
Riding instructor Jessica Smith is completing her bachelor’s de-gree in Social Work. Jessica has a
real passion for therapeutic rid-ing; she has been riding horses since she learned to walk. She has completed a practicum with the Creston Therapeutic Riding Association. Jessica stated her goal in running the camp is, “To bring another form of therapy to the community and give people a taste of therapeutic riding.”
There will be two dates for the camps this summer: August 21 to 23 and September 26 to 28. There are still spaces available at both camps. If you are interested in attending the camp, you can con-tact Jessica through the Riding Association website www.arrow-lakestra.com.
The Arrow Lakes Therapeutic Riding Association will be offer-ing more riding lessons in the fall. Jessica stated, “Many people that have a disability cannot af-ford treatments that are out there.” Because of this the asso-ciation is looking for sponsors to help offset the costs enabling more children to participate.
Adding horsepower to wellbeingTherapeutic ridingThe camp is tailored to each individual whether that means riding, grooming, or simply learning about the horse.

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)Fun, sun, games and a healthy twist of passion and drama are all current themes. In the drama department it may even be mat-ters of birth, life and death. Something is surely changing or someone and this may especially be you. Looking back over the past couple of years you will notice that you have undergone a veritable metamorphosis. How much fun can you have?
TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)Creative inspirations are not just pouring in, you are in the water. Blessings are now yours to receive and enjoy, though these may be mixed due to the power ploys of signi cant others. Yet you can probably handle them. Meanwhile, a growing urge to express the beauty you are seeing and feeling inside is your main focus.
GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)Ventures and journeys are keeping you busy. Some of these may have come about unexpectedly. At worst you feel a little scat-tered and overwhelmed. You have to make extra efforts as well. You may feel the need for support, a rock to lean on. Amidst the wide array of activities and personalities, you may need to focus more than usual to claim your own balance and center.
CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)Patiently establishing a new and more reliable foundation continues. This includes building your momentum. As well, you feel compelled to take stock of your resources and to increase your reserves. Increasing your overall awareness of what is implied and required is featured. However you do it, your focus is to invest into your future.
LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)Thoughts and notions of increase and expansion remain rmly on your mind. Success requires that you be willing to take a few risks, a leap of faith or two. The main obstacle stands to be inertia and apathy linked to subconscious fears. Take deliberate mea-sures to confront and overcome these. Know what you want, decipher why you feel hesitant and then let action lead the way.
VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)You are in a creative cycle that requires that you step back and take space for a while. Yet, it also demands organization, clarity, determination and follow through. All of this can be done behind the scenes. Whether you feel called to download your dream vision, get organized, outline a power plan, set things in motion, or all of the above, this is your nal cue.
LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)Your sense of individuality is really beginning to shine through. This is generally an expansive time for you. Meeting people and establishing new friendships is featured. Your ambitions are fueled, though you are still in a process of paying dues and passing entry exams. This will continue until the end of the year. Patiently persevere.
SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)You are in a passionate and determined mood. So much so that others may even nd you overzealous and pushy. You are in a commanding mood which might even be interpreted as demanding. It does make sense that you want to take new leads to increase your exposure and in uence. Be careful not to overdo it.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)Some big energy patterns are stirring both within and without. Inwardly you feel called to overcome, to do battle with limiting beliefs and worn out attitudes and behaviour patterns. Outwardly you are feeling very excited, perhaps especially about cultural events. Either way, there is plenty of drama stirring requiring optimism and faith.
CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)A search for new resources, talent and leverage is keeping you busy now. Deciphering what you want and need and who can meet your criteria is rmly on your mind. To this end you have research work underway. You have many questions and want answers to all of them. You are less patient than usual and will play hard to win.
AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)With each new day your world is expanding. This includes your social outreach. Making new connections feels necessary but is a source of excitement as well. The time is right to share what you know. Others will prove receptive, even enthusiastic to hear your message. Be willing to take the stage and shine your light. Do it for one and for all!
PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)A creative work cycles continues. In addition to the actual organization and follow through efforts implied, the work also includes mustering the vision, faith and courage to take action. Yet, you are not meant to do it alone. Cooperation and collaboration is required. Decipher how you can best make win/win proposals.

Horoscope for the Week August 15, 2014Horoscope for theTip of the Week: Before Leo time ends and Virgo begins and with four planets in the lion’s sign, plus the Black Moon, it merits some special attention. Leo is the sign of entertainments, fun, games, play, sports, children and creative offspring of any kind including works of art and performance. Hollywood and show biz in general come under the domain of Leo. It can be interpreted as the ‘earthy re sign’. In this regard Leo possesses a solid and practical approach to the affairs of life. Superstar and mega wealthy singer, song writer, performer, actress and CEO of her own fashion and accessories company, Madonna was born on August 16th. Often liking to be the producer, director and actor in their own show, people with Leo strong and balanced in their Astrological signature demonstrate creative, determined and steadfast leadership.
Excess and imbalance of the Leo archetype can produce a proud, dominant, controlling and dictatorial disposition. Napoleon Bonaparte and Benito Mussolini are historical examples. But these characteristics are not limited to people whose Sun Sign is Leo. Any of the 12 Zodiac Sign archetypes can be prominent even when the Sun and the sign it is in is not directly involved. An actual chart must be cast to decipher such factors. Positively, Leo is expressed as a generosity of spirit backed by an ardent passion to essentially get attention in order to entertain others and, more pragmatically, to achieve and to win recognition, fame and accolade.
In this Age of Aquarius, which is still dawning, Leo is situated on the relationship line which naturally attracts a lot of attention. Thus we see and experience great prominence and fame among actors, professional athletes and celebrities of any and every kind. In the context of our current age and in the wake of a rapidly emerging global culture, these people are placed on the veritable pedestals of the gods of mythology.

Safety Tip:There are many ways to show courtesy behind the wheel, including allowing space for other drivers to change lanes or manouevre. Driver courtesy is contagious, so wave at the next driver who lets you merge
in front of them – they may just pay it forward to another driver.
Question of the WeekWith the exception of Alberta and Quebec, drivers across Canada can be served with an Immediate Roadside Prohibition (IRP) if they blow 0.05 mg/100ml at the roadside. Should those two provinces fall into line with other provinces?

Splish, splash diesel dash to ride a waveSummer. What a wonderful time of year, heading out on the open road with family.Okay, it isn’t all fun and games, especially with 11-year-old and nine-year-old boys bickering in the back seat, but for the most part it can be enjoyable. For the first time I decided recently to take a road trip to one of my many car-related events. Usually I fly to a vehicle launch, but this time I thought I would take some extra time, and the family, on the road from Vancouver to Portland, Oregon. While I attended the 2015 Dodge Challenger event at the Port-land International Raceway, my family could take in some of the local sites. Day OneThe plan was to break things up a bit, instead of six solid hours behind the wheel of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel. Thanks to the Nexus card, crossing the border took all of 10 minutes. The next stop was the Boeing plant in Everett, Washington. This location was first developed in the 1960 when the world’s first Jumbo Jet was being developed, the iconic 747. I take over 100 flights a year but I’m still impressed with the machines that make it all happen, especially the 747. I wouldn’t visit the factory tour on the weekend again. There is no action, just half-built planes sitting around. I found it all amazing but my two boys – Jack and Charlie – didn’t share my enthusiasm.Day Two After a night in Redmond, Washington, we continued our trek to Portland, the land of tax-free shopping and the Evergreen Wings and Waves Waterpark. The waterpark just outside of Portland, in McMinnville, has a real 747 on the roof with water slides that exit the fuselage, pass through the roof of the building and splashing into a huge waterpark complex. This, along with promise of Portland’s famous Voodoo Doughnuts, kept everyone on track for the three-hour Jeep ride.
The Grand Cherokee is a fantastic ve-hicle for an active family of four, there is plenty of room in the back seat, and I never heard one complaint. My wife loved the solid ride and I kept an eye on the fuel economy. At the end of our run to Portland, the average consumption was 8.0L/100km. Pretty nice stuff for a truck with 420 lb.-ft. of torque.Day ThreeThis was the day I had to work. Poor me, trying out the all-new Dodge Challenger Hellcat on the track with all 707 hp. It’s a tough gig. While I was shooting for Driving TV, my wife took the Grand Cherokee to the Waterpark for a day. I checked in throughout the day and the comments were universal.“This is the best waterpark ever!” As I wrapped up the day at the track, I did get a frantic call from my wife “The
Jeep has lost power, I can’t drive over 30 mph, what should I do?”The gang at Chrysler jumped to attention and before I knew it, I was on the road with another Jeep Diesel and being accompanied by two PR reps in a 2015 Challenger. From the track to my stranded family took over an hour; in total they sat at a Shell station for two hours waiting. To pass the time, the kids ate what they wanted from the Shell convenience store and taking “selfies” seemed to do the trick. Once we arrived, we realized a Dodge dealership was literally five minutes up the road!Day FourWith a belly full of Voodoo Doughnuts, including Dou-ble Bubble flavour, fruit loops, coco puffs and good old chocolate, we were ready to go. It took a while for our repaired Jeep to arrive so on we went to sample more tax-free shopping and sample some of Portland’s many food trucks. When the Jeep did arrive, it turns out the Diesel went into “limp-mode” enabling the driver to get to the next dealership. The fix was a
simple computer program flash, which took no time at all. Regardless, we were on the road, heading to Seattle for some underground fun.
Day FiveAfter a great night in Seattle, we woke up to rain, lots of rain, so we went underground to visit the old, hidden city of Seattle. These tours take visitors on a walk through the ruins of Seattle after the massive fire of 1886 and the rebuilding that took place. Seattle is built on top of the old city; there are tunnels and abandoned sections of buildings there to explore. Time to head home. The Grand Cherokee never set another wheel wrong; it was fantastic in the heavy rain and very solid on the highway. After 1,300 plus kilometres behind the wheel, I averaged 8.5L/100km.
The LowdownPower: 3.0L turbocharged diesel V6 with 420 lb-ft. of torqueFill-up: 9.8L/7.0L/100km (city/highway) Sticker price: $58,000-$62,000

Towing a trailer for the rst time can be stressful and backing up can bring out words you didn’t know you had in your vocabulary. For the beginner, the best thing to do to develop your skills is go to a large, empty parking lot and practice. The key fact to bear in mind before you start is that the trailer will move in the op-posite direction of steering input when backing. Many
people nd it easier to posi-tion their hand at the bot-tom of the steering wheel; the trailer will go towards the same direction the hand travels. Do not rely on your mirrors, turn around and look at the trailer. When there is any chance of dam-age, use a spotter who can tell you to stop before dam-age occurs. Remember it will get easier with practice. Honest. The way you load the trailer can determine how easy
you can tow it. While load-ing, keep in mind that the tongue weight should be 10 percent to 15 percent of the overall trailer weight. One of the main causes of trailer sway is not having a large enough percentage of trail-er tongue weight compared to gross trailer weight. To help prevent the trailer from swaying back and forth, a few things can be done. Try placing heavier cargo in the front of the trailer, ahead of the trailer’s axle. Also center
the cargo left to right and use tie downs to keep the load from sliding. Trailer Sway can also lead to a loss of vehicle control. When starting out with a new load on a trailer, make sure it will not sway by gradually increasing your speed in intervals until high-way speed is reached. If the trailer does begin to sway, try adjusting the cargo and equipment accordingly and then repeat the test. If re-positioning the load and
equipment did not help re-duce the sway, a sway con-trol or a weight distribution system with sway control may be needed.Trailer sway can be a scary experience, especially if it is a large trailer. If this hap-pens, do not panic. Take your foot off the accelerator and coast to a slower speed; avoid sudden movements of the steering wheel. Apply the brakes slowly when you are down to a safe speed.
Check your hitch ball, cou-pler, and safety chains every time you tow. Many people with long trailer experience use a checklist to be sure all equipment is hooked up and in good condition. Damage can happen quick-ly when something goes wrong. For example, safety chains wear through very quickly if they are in contact with the pavement.

Never allow anyone in or on your trailer while it is being towed and speed limits for trailers are generally lower than for other vehicles. Leave a little extra room be-tween you and the vehicle in front of you. Even if you are using trailer brakes, you will not be able to stop nearly as fast as you can without a trailer. A good general rule is to double the two-second rule, making sure you maintain
at least a four-second gap between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. For heavier trailers, you will need to leave even more space. The longer the trailer, the further you will have to drive straight into intersec-tions before beginning your turns. Watch your mirrors carefully and go extra wide, at rst, until you get used to it. When approaching a hill, you will want to keep your speed consistent whether
you are going up a hill or down. When descend-ing, be extra careful not to overwork your brakes. Use a lower gear that will keep a consistent speed without constant use of the brakes. Pull off the road occasional-ly to let your brakes cool and to check your trailer brakes. Stay focused on your driving and do not try to perform other tasks. Remember to check your rear view mirror frequently, relax and enjoy the [email protected]

WEST KOOTENAY
Seattle, WA – Mount Rainier in Washington State stands 4,392 metres high. Its majestic presence topped off with an icy garnish, as well as wispy tufts of clouds that surround its peak. It leaves onlookers in awe. The crystal white hue of Mercedes-Benz C400 seems to have a similar effect on people. They can’t help but stare. Some take photos. Some admire from up close, some from afar. The C-Class is a staple prod-uct in the Mercedes-Benz lineup and is their most popular-selling vehicle in the family. It’s also one that plays a vital role in the Ca-nadian market, one that usually involves snow! While the all-new C-Class isn’t covered in snow (just yet), it can certainly handle it with minimal effort. All C-Class sedans come standard with Mercedes’ 4MATIC all-wheel drive system.Though it’s summertime and that feature isn’t being put to use, there are plenty of other new fun things to play with in this five-person sedan.First off, five people will fit more comfortably inside. It’s larger in every dimen-sion compared to outgoing C-Class.Then you’ll be able to bring out that smile more often when it comes to accelerat-ing.There are two all-new 4- and 6-cylinder turbocharged en-gines from which to choose. The C300 features a tur-bocharged 2.0L, 4-cyl-inder that produces 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft
of torque. (Note, this isn’t the same engine currently found in the CLA or GLA.Then there’s the C400. With 329 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque, this new V6 has more torque and better fuel economy in comparison with the outgoing 2014. Both engines are paired with a 7G-TRONIC trans-mission.Whether using the steering
wheel paddle shifters or just letting the car change the gears on its own, you also have the ability to change your driving modes thanks to the AGILITY SE-LECT system that gives you five choices. There’s Eco, Normal, Sport, Sport+, and Individual. The modes are self-explanatory. Driving in the city and want to save more fuel? Pop it in Eco mode. Heading to a track and want the best access to power? That’s a Sport+ kind of day.

My weapon of choice, even for everyday driving, was the Sport mode. It gives the vehicle enough edge to make it fun and exciting, but without the harshness and abrupt gear changes that would be better suited for the track. In Sport mode, the modified shifts and throttle response was sensitive enough to add immediate power but not overwhelming, especially in an urban setting. Then there
was the steering response, whose curve is adjusted to give you a better grasp for the road, but without the abruptness, a Sport mode could potentially offer.Regardless, whether I was in the 300 or 400, I was a happy driver. And I had a happy passenger because we both sat in comfort for the hundreds of kilometres we put on this next genera-tion sedan.Along with its new inte-rior and exterior look, the C Classes are equipped
with the next generation of infotainment systems. That comes complete with Touchpad, integrated Media Interface and MB Apps. The touchpad and I still need more bonding time. I found it confusing to use at first and I ended up pressing buttons I shouldn’t have! But if that’s the harsh-est criticism of the vehicle I have, it’s not doing too badly.Okay, the B pillars are quite wide and intrude on my blind spot visibility, but
again, properly adjusting the mirrors and a shoulder glance will eliminate those anxieties. When it comes to driving, it checks off all the boxes nec-essary to make it a luxury sedan. It’s quiet. Road and engine noises are kept at bay. Its interior materials are soft touch and pleas-ing to the eyes. And it feels great to drive at slow or high speeds. The 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, should continue to impress, remain the top-
seller and make people smile, one acceleration or turn at a time.The C300 has a starting MSRP of $43,000, while the C400 has a starting MSRP of $51,400.Visit http://w w w. m e r-cedes-benz.ca for more information.a lexandra.s t r a u b @drivewaybc.ca

Summer, what a wonderful time of year, heading out on the open road with fam-ily.Okay it isn’t all fun and games, espe-cially with 11-year-old and nine-year-old boys bickering in the back seat, but for the most part it can be enjoyable. For the rst time I decided recently to take a road trip to one of my many car-related events. Usually I y to a vehicle launch but this time I thought I would take some extra time, and the family, on the road from Vancouver to Portland, Or-egon. While I attended the 2015 Dodge Challenger event at the Portland Inter-national Raceway, my family could take in some of the local sites. Day OneThe plan was to break things up a bit, instead of six solid hours behind the wheel of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel. Thanks to the Nexus card, crossing the border took all of ten min-utes. The next stop was the Boeing plant in Everett Washington. This location was rst developed in the 1960 when
the world’s rst Jumbo Jet was being developed, the iconic 747. I take over 100 ights a year but I’m still impressed with the machines that make it all hap-pen, especially the 747. I wouldn’t visit the factory tour on the weekend again. There is no action, just half-built planes sitting around. I found it all amazing but my two boys – Jack and Charlie – didn’t share my enthusiasm.Day Two After a night in Redmond, Washington, we continued our trek to Portland, the land of tax-free shopping and the Ever-green Wings and Waves Waterpark. The Grand Cherokee is a fantastic ve-hicle for an active family of four, there is plenty of room in the back seat I never heard one complaint. My wife loved the
solid ride and I kept an eye on the fuel economy. At the end of our run to Portland, the average consumption was 8.0L/100km. pretty nice stuff for a truck with 420 lb.-ft. of torque.Day ThreeThis was the day I had to work, poor me trying out the all-new Dodge Chal-lenger Hellcat on the track with all 707hp. It’s a tough gig. While I was shoot-ing for Driving TV, my wife took the Grand Cherokee to the Waterpark for a day. I checked in throughout the day and the comments were universal. “This is the best waterpark ever”! As I wrapped up the day at the track, I did get a frantic call from my wife. “The Jeep has lost power, I can’t drive over 30 mph, what should I do?” The gang at Chrysler jumped to attention and before I knew it, I was on the road with another Jeep Diesel and being accompanied by
two PR reps in a 2015 Challenger. From the track to my stranded family took over an hour, in total they sat at a Shell station for two hours waiting. To pass the time, the kids ate what they wanted from the Shell convenience store and taking “self-ies” seemed to do the trick. Once we arrived, we realized a Dodge dealership was liter-ally ve minutes up the road!Day FourWith a belly full of Voo-doo Doughnuts, includ-
ing Double Bubble avour, fruit loops, coco puffs and good old chocolate, we were ready to go. It took a while for our repaired Jeep to arrive so on we went to sample more tax-free shopping and sample some of Portland’s many food trucks. When the Jeep did arrive, it turns out the Diesel went into “limp-mode”
enabling the driver to get to the next dealership. The x was a simple com-puter program ash, which took no time at all. Regardless, we were on the road, heading to Seattle for some under-ground fun.Day FiveAfter a great night in Seattle, we woke up to rain, lots of rain, so we went un-derground to visit the old, hidden city of Seattle. These tours take tourist on a walk through the ruins of Seattle after the massive re of 1886 and the re-building that took place. Seattle is built on top of the old city; there are tunnels and abandoned sections of buildings there to explore. Time to head home. The Grand Cherokee never set another wheel wrong; it was fantastic in the heavy rain and very solid on the high-way. After 1,300 plus kilometres behind the wheel, I averaged 8.5L/100km. The Ford Focus is an afford-able and underrated used compact car buyIt got a major makeover for the 2008 model year: an all-new coupe (two-door) edition was introduced to comple-ment the stalwart (four-door) sedan. Lamentably, however, the popular in Canada (but not in the US) wagon and (Eu-ro-style) hatchback versions of Focus were discontinued. The ‘08 refresh of Focus in-cluded new front and rear body fascias, improved sound insulation, a redesigned in-terior and a new-tech multi-media upgrade. The ‘08 Focus is also an about 45-kg (100-lb) lighter overall and it’s the weight reduction measures included the elimination of a
spare tire, which was replaced by an inflator kit. A real spare tire/wheel could be added as an option.
An auto industry landmark was reached when Ford teamed up with Microsoft to offer a unique new multi-media system called Sync,

which (for the first time) al-lowed control of digital music players and cellular phones with voice commands. In ad-dition to the benefit of driver hands-free call taking, the Sync system can also trans-late text messages into voice
messages. The ‘08 Focus, both coupe and sedan, came in S, SE and top-line SES trims. The Sync sys-tem was a ($495) option with the SE trim level and standard with SES. On the downside, electronic stability control
was not offered on any ver-sion of the ‘08 Focus. The most noticeable change from a driving perspective was the reduction in outside noise and chassis vibration. The quieter cabin is the result of sound deadening improve-
ments that include the use of thicker glass. The steering column in this Focus is also mounted on a stronger cross-beam beneath the instrument panel, which helps eliminate vibrations. The only engine (in Canada) was a 2.0-litre, dual-over-head-cam, 4-cylinder engine, which came with a new air intake and cooling systems. It produces 140-horsepower (4-horsepower increase over the ‘07) and fuel economy has been improved. The transmission choices were a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed au-tomatic. Fuel economy is 8.4 L/100km in the city and high-way fuel economy is rated at a phenomenal 5.9 L/100km with the automatic. The manual transmission slightly increases city consumption
and reduces highway con-sumption, so overall the rat-ing is the same. Overall, the coupe performed better than the sedan in IIHS crash tests, as the sedan got lower scores in side impacts. All editions of the ‘08 Focus came with a new design of side curtain air bag that uses a “roll-fold” technology to protect occupants who are resting their heads against a window. The biggest change on the 2009 edition of the Ford Focus was the inclusion of electronic stability control as standard on the SES trim. It was also standard with a new SEL mid-level sedan trim and an option on lower trim levels. The coupe also got a sportier appearance package and a minor improvement in performance.

crash dummiesDRIVE SAFE THIS SUMMER
children are not
British Columbians start driving at an early age.We can barely walk on two feet before many of us are pushing replica models over the carpet at home, complete with self-gener-ated engine sound effects. Then it’s dodgem cars at the fun fair or pedal cars like those that youngsters will be revving up at the 2014 Vancouver Island Mo-tor Gathering on Sunday at the Viscount Aero Centre, at 9800 McDonald Park Road, in Sidney.Dodgem cars are not the recommended way to learn how to drive as the intent is to ram into as many oth-ers as possible! Despite the moniker, that’s what I found to be the aim when I got behind the wheel of what were called bumper cars back in the 1960s.
However, the pedal cars from the Tom Thumb Safety Program teach traffic and pedestrian safety to chil-dren from five to eight years old and thus intro-duces hundreds of kids ev-ery year to the joys of being at the wheel.Of course, the annual Van-couver Island event, pre-sented by the German Auto Import Network (GAIN) is not just for kids. It promises four-wheel fun for the en-tire family and raises mon-ey for the Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island and the Saanich Pen-insula Hospital Foundation.‘Big kids’ will enjoy casting their eyes over hundreds of spectacular cars, motor-cycles and even some air-planes. Rare examples of the Porsche 904, 2006 Ford GT, and a 1964 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster will be among many classics.
Be sure also to check out the Aston Martin DB5, Lam-borghini Aventador, Ferrari 348i and Pininfarina-styled 308 GTB. There will plenty of tasty stuff of the food variety upon which to chow down too but please wipe your hands before touching the
paintwork of the gorgeous 1990 Rolls Royce Silver Spirit II, that the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foun-dation will be auctioning off. Fewer than 300 were made that year and this car has only 86,000 km on the

Fuel efficiency is an important issue for car buyers, and understandably so. Con-serving fuel is good for drivers’ budgets and the planet, so the concept of fuel ef-ficiency would seem to benefit everyone. But just because fuel efficiency is a good concept does not mean there are not misconceptions about it among drivers and automotive professionals alike. The following are some of the more widely held misconceptions about fuel efficiency.Full tanks conserve fuel. Many people have long believed that a nearly full tank of gas means the fuel within that tank is less likely to evaporate, and that tanks that half-full tanks are losing gas to evap-oration. Though this might have been
the case years ago, today’s vehicle’s are smarter than ever before, and their fuel systems are designed with vapor recovery systems so drivers traveling around with tanks that are closer to empty than full aren’t losing gas to evaporation.Manual transmissions are more fuel effi-cient. Technology can once again be cred-ited with turning conventional wisdom on its head. In the past, manual transmission vehicles might have been more fuel ef-ficient because drivers could more ef-ficiently control engine revving with a 5-speed manual transmission than they could with the standard 3-speed auto-matic transmission. However, automatic transmissions have evolved over the
years, and they are now more adept at controlling revs and conserving fuel than many drivers of manual transmission ve-hicles.When you fill up matters. Some drivers have long believed that filling up during the cooler hours of the day earns them more gas than filling up when the tem-peratures are at their peak. This theory traces its origins to the fact that liquids are at their most dense when they are cool. But today’s filling stations store their gas in tanks beneath the ground, which is why you might see a tanker emp-tying its contents into the ground at the filling station. These underground tanks are insulated from temperature swings,
so you aren’t likely to receive any more gas by filling up in the morning than you will when filling up at night. An old vehicle is destined to be less fuel efficient. Any product that is allowed to fall into disrepair will prove less efficient than products that are well maintained, and cars are no exception. A poorly main-tained car will not operate at peak fuel efficiency because it’s likely being forced to work harder to get down the street than it would if it was well kept. But a well-maintained vehicle should not grow less fuel efficient over time.Shifting into neutral while stopping saves gas. This is another misconception that was once true but no longer applies
thanks to advances in technology. When engines still had carburetors, shifting into neutral might have helped conserve fuel by stopping the flow of gas into the en-gine while the car was idling. However, fuel injection systems are now comput-erized and capable of sensing when an engine is revving above idle. This shuts off the fuel injectors, preventing gas from being injected into the engine and pre-venting gas from being wasted while the vehicle is stopped as a result.Taking steps to conserve fuel is a good way for drivers to save money and benefit the environment. However, some of the conventional means to conserving fuel are no longer viable.

Long weekend road trip tips for a good timedrivewayBC.ca
A long weekend provides the perfect op-portunity to hop into the car and embark on a road trip. Sometimes it doesn’t take an extended vacation to recharge your batter-ies. A brief change of scenery and venue can make for quite the respite as well.Road trips also tend to be more affordable than longer getaways. If you have the bene-fit of a tow hitch and a camper, you already have your accommodations. But even if you still need lodging, there are several budget motels that can fit the bill for overnight lodging along your route. Here are some other road trip tips. Before embarking, take out a map and plan your excursion. Stick to locations that are within reasonable driving distance from
home. If you roam too far, you will spend more time behind the wheel than you will enjoying your destination. Locations no more than five to six hours away should suffice.Get your vehicle in road trip shape by ensur-ing it is in good working condition. If your car is scheduled for an oil change, get one before leaving. In addition, top off fluids and be sure that tires are properly inflated.Stick to the scenic routes. While they may not save you travel time, avoiding inter-states in favor of picturesque backroads will make for a much more relaxing and visually inspiring trip. Schedule rest stops so you can get out of the car and explore along the way to your destination. Taking
backroads may also help you avoid some of your fellow weekend travelers.Make your long weekend a Saturday through Monday affair. You may find the roads are more congested Friday through Sunday. Simply starting your trip on Satur-day and returning on Monday could save you the headache of driving in heavy traffic.Scope out low-cost activities at your desti-nation. Many national parks are inexpen-sive and may only charge one fee per vehi-cle to enter. After Labor Day, many beaches no longer charge entry fees, making them an affordable option.Take advantage of cooler temperatures and picturesque scenery by planning an autumn weekend road trip.

This is the prime season for road trips, which many people feel are the most af-fordable vacation option available. They also provide unsurpassed views of the countryside and the ability to slow down and customize
the trip as desired.Packing the car for a road trip can be complicated. Although the goal may be to cram as much as possible into the car and get on the road quickly, part of the safety plan for this year’s adventure should
include packing properly to avoid injury.Americans and Canadians combined drive trillions of miles in any given year. Al-though it is difficult to make a direct comparison between how many people choose
driving as opposed to flying, when comparing data from the Federal Highway Admin-istration and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, for every mile Americans flew they drove about six more in 2011. With so many miles
clocked on the road, it is es-sential to make the experi-ence as safe as possible -- and that means properly securing belongings in a ve-hicle before getting on the road.In 2009, a laptop computer
became a projectile that killed its owner. Heather Storey of Surrey, British Co-lumbia, was driving to work when her vehicle was hit by a tow truck. Her laptop was propelled at such a force that it caused a deadly injury to
her head.Unsecured or improperly packed items in a car or truck have the potential to cause serious injury when on the road or, at the very least, may obscure visibility when driv-ing, says Consumer Reports. The organization and others offer drivers a series of tips that can help make travel safer.Adjust tire pressure prior to travel. Consult the owners manual to determine the proper tire pressure when the vehicle is carrying a full load. This will not only help allevi-ate unnecessary wear and tear on the tires, but also can help to prevent a tire blow-out.Know the car’s limits. It also is important to stay below the maximum permitted weight or maximum load capacity for the car or truck. Consumer Reports says that the capacity for small SUVs can span from 825 pounds to 1,155 pounds. Midsize SUVs may carry anywhere from 900 pounds to 1,405 pounds. Minivan capacities can vary significantly as well. The load capacity is specified in the owner’s manual.Store the heaviest items at the lowest, most central part of the vehicle. This helps re-duce effects on handling that can lead to problems with steering or braking. Drivers should keep the overall cen-ter of gravity lower to help reduce the risk of rollover.Make sure everything is secured in the car or truck. Use crates or boxes to house smaller items. Use straps or rope to tie down anything loaded in the back of a truck or SUV to the vehicle’s cargo anchors. Load as much as you can into a car’s trunk to avoid having loose items rolling around inside the passenger area.Keep a clear view of mirrors and the rear of the vehicle. Do not pack any items higher than the level of the rear seats. Not only can these items fly forward in the event of sharp braking or a crash, but they also may obscure the driver’s view of the road.Make sure passengers can be seated safely. Packing a car doesn’t always mean be-ing able to fit suitcases and belongings. It also means ensuring passengers can ride safely. Do not seat more passengers than can be re-strained by the seat belts in the car. If there is not enough room, it is safer in the long run to take two cars.Pack a vehicle safely and make sure it is maintained before heading out on your first road trip of the season.
