FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK: May 2017
Dear Quilters,
Just got back from AQS Show in Paducah. Did we have a
good time? NO, we had a great time. There was so much to
see and do. If you were going to do it all, you would need a
week because not only is there the show to attend and all the vendors to talk to but
there is the museum, the pop up shops, the restaurants, the Rotary Show, Hancock's,
etc, etc, etc. Needless to say, I came back with lots of ideas and inspiration. Now I
just have to have the time to do them. Wouldn't it be nice to be Eleanor Burns and
have a group of quilters to make all your ideas into quilts or at least do all the cutting
for you? Another observation I had in Paducah is that if you are a quilter, you may not
know the quilter standing beside you but you can easily become friends in just a few
seconds. I met quilters from all over the country. Quilters are very hospitable people.
My final word about Paducah is a question: How in the world can the judges decide
who wins? I know there is criteria they rely on but it must be a tough job. Every quilt
looked like a winner to me. And as I think about it, if you have a quilt accepted for the
show, you have to count yourself a winner just because your quilt was chosen.
So what's happening this month. Our speaker is Jann Warfield. Jann dyes her fabrics
using an ice dying method. She is also holding a workshop to teach you to do this.
There is a fee for the workshop and also a fee for supplies. The kit has everything you
need to dye the 12 fat quarters that are included in the kit. See Janie Franco at the
Education table to sign up.
Don't forget to make your small quilt for the Monthly Art Challenge. The theme this
month is domestic animals. Cats, dogs, birds etc. Turn them in to Trish Wallick.
Did you get your new Guild directory? Pick one up at the membership table. A big
thanks to Sharon Pruitt for putting it together and Nancy Meinhardt for editing.
Just a reminder that we will not be meeting at the Rec Center for the June or July
meeting. The center has a summer program for the kids. We will be meeting at
Contractors Institute Learning Center, 8238 Joliet Street (at the 15000 block of US
Hwy 19) Hudson.
Remember, there's nothing a day of quilting can't cure,
Pam

Hello again! Our April meeting was attended
by 116 signed in members and 3 guests. We
were joined by three new members, Jennifer
Baker, Debbie Springer, and Donnie Hanson.
( More D's. It's a mystery.) And at last count
we have 236 members. You may have noticed
that the new handbooks have arrived. If you
didn't get one at the meeting in April, please
stop by the membership table and pick one up.
They are a lovely lemon yellow this year. We
are using the honor system for distribution. So
if you picked up one for a friend, be sure you
give it to her! We did not print enough for you
to have two copies.
For the next couple of months, the sign in
sheets will have two extra columns for you to
fill out please. One is for veterans. Someone
asked the Guild if any of our members were
themselves veterans. We could only reply “We
don't know.” So we're asking. If you are a Vet,
please put a checkmark in the column. After
thinking about the veteran business, we got
nosy. So the second space is for your former,
current or favorite occupation. We know that
many of us have had more than one. Just pick
the one you'd put on your tombstone (and try
not to think about that). If you filled the
columns in April don't bother with it again.
By the way, the small group leaders have not
called me and told me to stop telling people to
attend their meetings. I can only assume that
you are not showing up in droves. Do your-
selves a favor. Pick a time or place convenient
for you and GO! That contact phone number,
there's no quiz, that's just for directions. You
can do this and you will have a lovely time.
Pat Donohoo
Ladies, we are in countdown mode. We have 10 months to go (not quite). We are starting to pick up speed in some areas. At last count Marge Keane had already received 12 quilts for the Small Quilt Auction. Way to go! Only 88 more needed. And I understand some ladies have already turned in their quilt registrations. (probably Marsha White). She's usually the first. Emma Corbell has classes scheduled to make items for the Boutique. Learn some neat new things. The scrap bag project is in full swing. Bethany Prokopovich has some elfs helping her but she can use additional help and scraps. We need your help. Think about your area of expertise and offer to help. Next month we will cover "Frequently Asked Questions ". But if you should have any of these in the meantime don't hesitate to call one of the 3 chairs. Call for questions, concerns or suggestions.

Raffle Baskets are being added to the 2018 Quilt Show.
This is a great way for the Guild to raise additional money for
the charities we support. If you would like to create a basket by
yourself or with a friend please do so. It's a great way to
support the Guild. Pick a "theme" and be creative.
We ALL have gadgets we have bought and they are unopened
sitting in a drawer, donate them and they will be used in a
sewing basket. Yardage of material, jelly rolls, fat quarters are
another great donation.

Hello, Fellow Guild Members. Your suggestions for possible speakers and quilting techniques has helped my search for future guests. Please keep it coming! Local Quilt Shops have been contacted; I’ll let you know when the dates are set. Brian Ford will show us how to properly maintain our sewing machines in September. I know it cannot be this year, but a show of hands at last meeting indicates interest in Nancy Chong’s Stress-free Hand Appliqué technique; I will follow through securing her.
May – Jann Warfield will bring her trunk show and workshop on Ice Dyeing. The
workshop will be on Friday, May 19, Dye and Ice: Creating Fabric Uniquely Yours. Jann supplies 12 fat quarters per student, dust mask, tea strainer, latex gloves, con-tainers, plastic spoon, Soda Ash (PH UP), Dye, Professional Textile Detergent, ice and class handouts. Students only need to supply a pair of kitchen gloves to fit them, a rag towel and permanent marker to mark their fabric. The kit fee normally runs $35 and will remain that unless prices go up before then. Fee for the class will be $45.

Thank you for the coupons for the
military. Please remember to cut them
out !! Our troops put their lives on the line
for us everyday, we surely can do some
part to help them.
Check the coupons – they must say “manufacturer’s coupon” somewhere on the face of the coupon – NO Publix, Target or other local stores. Please sort by food and non-food. Pet food is considered non-food. Don’t forget coupons are cut individually, and placed in labeled plastic bags. Thank you again.
Trish Wallick
Thanks to all who stopped by the ways and means and got us started on projects for the boutique for next year's guilt show. Stop by each month to see what you can help us with in small projects. We still have lanyards and pins (quilt show2016) for $5.00 each.
Please stop by the Ways and Means table to choose patterns for other items that can be done at home (either in Florida or in Snowbirdland). If you don’t want to sew, we still can use your help with cutting, ironing, pinning, etc. The success of the Boutique depends on all the wonderful things we as members can make. Thanks, Dannee Brooks Nina Trapp
Food Bank and metal tabs
I am still collecting the Tabs from
soda cans for Shriners Children’s
Hospital. Thank you so much for your
support in the past.
I want to thank everyone for the
wonderful response to the
pack-a-sack donation in April. There
was well over $200.00 worth of kid
friendly food and around $80.00 in
cash.
The donation in May is for Faith Baptist Church. Please be as generous. The need is great. Donna Herrick

Help needed /Guild functions
Mary Parkin is looking for help with the
coffee on meeting days. You need to
be there by 7:30 so that the ladies can
have their coffee when they show up
at 8:30. Three or four people would be
nice. Then they would not have to be
there that early every month.
Thanks for your
help!!

Each month all guild members will be challenged to make an ART quilt. You may interpret the word “ART” as you like.
The object of this challenge is to get you to think outside your comfort zone,
try a new technique and new fabrics.
All guild members are encouraged to participate. Winners will be selected by viewer’s choice voting at the meeting. Prize will be Roses for 1st, 2nd
and 3rd place winners. Blue, Red and White! By the end of the year you may end up with a bouquet of roses!
If you wish to participate but cannot attend the monthly meeting, have a friend turn in your art quilt to Trish Wallick by 9:30. This friend will be
responsible for returning your quilt to you.
Rules are simple.
1. Each month’s theme will be last month’s Fat Chance fabric selection. See listed.
2. The size must be no more than 18” wide by no more than 23” long.
3. Each quilt must be no thicker than 1”.
4. You are not permitted to put your name anywhere on the front of the quilt.
5. You MUST include your name on a label on the back.
6. Entries must be a quilt (you all know this rule!!!)
7. All appliqué edges, including fused and raw edge must be sewn down.
8. No sleeve is necessary on these challenge quilts.
9. Quilts must be turned in to Trish Wallick by 9:30 AM to be displayed for voting.
10. Viewer’s choice votes must be turned in by 10:00 AM.
Winners will be announced at the end of the guild meeting,

for your quilts to be photographed and used for advertising and
promoting the guild and its activities.
