A Message from Our Community Lay Director Emmaus Family,
Welcome to 2017 and I pray everyone’s New Year is starting off great! We
are just beginning the 2017 Emmaus Season with two teams beginning to
form, train, and prepare for the upcoming Spring Walks. Both the Men and
Women teams are preparing for each Pilgrim that we can send from the
Community to continue to strengthen the local churches, and hopefully your
own as well. As we’ve all been commissioned, Christ is counting on us to
be His disciple. Now is the time to prayerfully consider sponsoring that per-
son in your church that holds the passion to serve and be rejuvenated by
the 72 hour weekend experience each of us had ourselves.
Not only is Christ counting on us, we need to support each other too. Have
you ever wondered how many people it takes to support a Gathering, a
Weekend Event, or even a Community Picnic? How about how many are
needed to support the activities that are not visible to many, such as com-
munications, registration, and even prayer? Did you know the Team Mem-
bers of the weekend walks are doing far more than they should well before
and after the weekend? The Board of Directors have been looking closely
at these, and other questions the past couple of months and realize we
need your help. For 2017 we are going to reach out to the Community At
Large and ask for volunteers to help on various committees, led by the
Community elected Board Chairs. Some folks may only have a couple of
hours during a Weekend Walk to help. Some may not be able to attend at
all, but you may still be able to help support in other ways as a volun-
teer. Beginning in March you’ll start to see more information coming out
during the Gatherings and communications showing how you can actively
participate as God’s hands and feet for the Emmaus Community. As a lead-
er in your home church, as we begin to ask for a few hours of support, we
ask that you prayerfully consider blessing the leaders in the Emmaus Com-
munity with the skills and talents that Christ has gifted to each one of you.
This will be an exciting year, and we pray for humble servants that embrace
every opportunity to serve Christ - as it is highlighted in the Emmaus Team
Canon – It’s Not About Me!… “I will remember that I am here only as an in-
strument through which God can work to renew the church.”

Meet Your New Board Members
Chip O’Roke
Chip O’Roke, who walked WV #119 attends Beding-ton United Methodist Church with his lovely wife, Mar-sha. Chip has two sons and a daughter, one step-son, a daughter-in-law and three wonderful grandchildren.
Chip is retired from the Martinsburg Fire Department, B & O Railroad Shops, and the Berkeley County Sher-iff’s Department at the age of 67. His hobbies include motorcycles, traveling and woodworking (although he doesn’t think he’s very good at it).
While now serving on the Board of Directors, Chip is also involved in a reunion group and has teamed several times.
Dan Turner
Dan is very thankful to our gracious God for allowing him to serve our Emmaus Commu-nity as a member of the Board of Directors. He grew up in Fairmont, WV as a member of the Episcopal Church.
He attended Fairmont State College majoring in music. Later he received his MBA from WVU. He spent his 40 year working career in supply chain, materials and purchasing man-agement.
Dan and Sharon have lived in Martinsburg for about 12 years now. They worship at Ar-den United Methodist Church. He has served as choir director, member of the Trustees, taught Sunday school, helps with Vacation Bible School, and hosted a couple of Emmaus events there.
Dan feels honored and privileged to be able to serve as the hands and feet of Christ in our local community. He is looking forward to getting our community members while also developing our Emmaus organization over the next three years. God’s blessing to all!
Sharon Turner
Sharon also appreciates the opportunity to serve Emmaus as a Board Member. She is currently an author of Christian books, but spent her career as a business owner, and Exec-utive Director of Make-a-Wish Foundation of Northern West Virginia, and as Executive Di-rector of Girl Scouts of Woodland Council in Wisconsin.
Dan and Sharon met in college at Fairmont State University where they earned their un-dergraduate degrees in Music Education, K-12. Sharon received her masters in Communi-cations at WVU in 1999, but has gotten a much larger education from raising her two daughters and four grandchildren.
Emmaus has become a very large part of Dan’s and Sharon’s lives. They have a deep love for the message it sends and they grow closer to our Heavenly Father every time they meet with their beloved Emmaus family. Here is to a great New Year as we walk together with Christ toward Emmaus.

Karen Sassaman
Karen Sassaman walked on West Virginia #71 and sat at the table of Ruth! She is the
wife of our own Pastor Scott Sassaman and worships at Summit Point Memorial United
Methodist Church.
Karen says that Emmaus changes their lives. She commented that, “I never thought I
would be a pastor’s wife, but God had a new plan for our life.” How exciting is that?
Karen loves her Emmaus family and is excited to be able to serve again on the Board
of Directors. Her hobbies include cooking and crafting—making cards. Karen also loves
to sing.
Currently Karen is working at the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg. Thank you for
your service Karen.
Brandi Swope
Brandi Swope worships at Wesleyan Chapel in Berkeley Spring, West Virginia and
Church of the Bible Covenant in Martinsburg, West Virginia. She walked on Emmaus
#99 and sat at the table of Esther (with an “h”).
Brandi and her husband Pastor Matt Swope (WV #96), of almost 21 years, live in
Needmore, Pennsylvania. They have three beautiful children together ranging in ages
from 10 to 20.
This is Brandi’s first time ever serving on a board, so she covets your prayers for guid-
ance and the equipping needed for this position from the Holy Spirit. She is here to serve
you, the Emmaus community.

Journey to the Table
“I share my story so that you will be better able to share your story with someone else.”

What is Journey to the Table?
Journey to the Table is a new program ministry from the Upper Room that began in Jan-
uary 2016. “Journey” a name to symbolize a stage of life and “Table” for coming to the Lord’s
table; sitting around the table with friends and sharing your story. It provides an opportunity for
young adults to explore their faith; build their relationships with a community of their peers, and
create time for Christian action in a transitory time of life.
Who should attend Journey to the Table?
Young adults, ages 18– 35 of any denomination are encouraged to attend a Journey to the Ta-
ble weekend. It is an opportunity to strengthen their spiritual lives, get answers to their ques-
tions about their faith, and understand the responsibility of living a Christian life.
How does Journey to the Table work?
Journey to the Table offers a very flexible schedule allowing young adults the freedom to partic-
ipate in Bible study and prayer in a church setting, college ministry building/campus space. It
can be led by campus ministry leadership. Journey to the Table offers young adults an oppor-
tunity to strengthen or renew their commitment to follow Christ and bolster their commitment to
follow Jesus back into their familiar environments of friendships, school, family, church, and
work.

Something to think about…
Newsletters serve numerous purposes, such as; disseminating infor-mation, motivating performance, promoting unity, or improving morale. Our newsletter is no different. We hope that through our newsletter it
helps to spread the word and improve communication between the Board of Directors and the Em-maus Community. So basically our newsletter is a tool. Our Board of Directors meets monthly to discuss community concerns and we are always looking for ways to improve communication or ideas for improving our day to day, (month to month) walk to walk procedures. We encourage you, the community, to let us know if you have question, or would like to see something changed. The only way we can address any issues or concerns is if they are brought to us. You can email the editor above (communications can and will remain confidential if requested) or send a note to a board member. Future newsletters will be printed out so that community members can get a copy at the upcoming gatherings. Thank you all for your support and encouragement!

Emmaus gatherings are held on the second Saturday of each
month other than August, when we have our picnic, and Decem-
ber, when there is no gathering. They begin promptly at 6 PM
and are held at various churches throughout the Emmaus com-
munity. We invite you to join us and stay connected with the Em-
maus Community.

Board of Directors
On Saturday, January 20, our Board of Directors attended an all day training/
organizational retreat led by Keith Rauch, our Community Lay Director. Members
of the Board of Directors were all asked to chair committees. You the community,
will all have an opportunity to join committees and participate in the day to day ac-
tivities of the Emmaus Community. We encourage you all to prayerfully consider
where God may have you serve in the community.
Committees provide the opportunity for people to get involved in what is going on rather than just attending
events. Committees handle the day-to-day operations of the organization. The board serves as the governance
arm, and the committees serve as the management arm.
Committees also provide a unique opportunity for a variety of people to share supportively with each other while
also enhancing their Christian walk, both for the Emmaus pilgrims and for the individual committee members.
