Why using a snubber?

- reduce or eliminate voltage or current spikes

- limit dv/dt or di/dt

- keep the load in the safe operating area (SOA)

- reduce EMI by clamping voltage and current ringing

- reduce the total losses due to switching

RC-networkresistor-capacitor damping network, most common used.

- It reduces the peak voltage at turn-off.

- Damps the ringing.

- R = self resistance of the IGBT

Used:

low and medium power applications and as

secondary damping network to suppress the

high frequency ringing

Several advantages over the RC:

- reduces the total loss, including both

switching and snubber losses.

- the load line pass better within the SOA

(safe operating area).

- for a given value of Cs, the total losses will

useful part of the snubber
