The ski hill 2 has grown this year, reach-ing a height of 58 m. Here you will find two lit ski trails spanning 240 m, a snowboard park with ramps, tubing track and chil-dren’s slope. Skiing and snowboarding lessons, as well as equipment rental and service points are available. Stender’s pica café offers delicious food and warm drinks, and the car park right next to it provides convenient parking.

Lielais Square 1 is a place where the locals traditionally see in the New Year, gather for celebrations and take leisurely strolls. In August, a unique, attractive and globally trendy city environment design object was unveiled here – the Frigate Whalefish fountain designed by German architect David Cook. The fountain’s com-positional solution depicts the exterior of the Whalefish, a sailing ship which was part of Duke Jacobs’ fleet.

For Christmas and the New Year, Ventspils is beautifully lit up with street decora-tions in coordinated reds. The Christmas decorations that delight the citizens and guests of Ventspils every year, will be turned on on Saturday, 26 November. This year Ventspils will be adorned with six Christmas trees, 3000 strings of lights with a total of 111,000 lights, vari-ous light decorations and Chinese zodi-ac signs on Lielais Boulevard. The holiday decorations will be up until 8 January.

At the attraction area of the Ventspils Water Amusement Park 3 you are bound to have fun at the wave pool, children’s pool with animal figures, two 53 m and 56 m long and 6 m high slides, Mountain River, two spa baths and a sauna. Meanwhile, at the spa area you can enjoy bathhouses, salt room, massage showers and a cold water pool with soft music in the background. The park also has two swimming pools, an athletics hall and a café.

RECREATION IN VENTSPILS MUNICIPALITY

At the end of the year, Ventspils Museum will be awaiting visitors with several exhibitions and events. In mid-October the exhibition hall of the Castle of the Livonian Order

5 will host an extensive exhibition PRIVA-TE (1900-1950), which will introduce visitors to situations and objects related to privacy. Something new will await visitors at the Se-aside Open-Air Museum 6 on Great Por-ridge Day on 16 October and on the Elf Trail on 12–23 December. The traditional Ne-edleworkers’ Forum at the House of Crafts

7 will be colourful and much anticipa-ted, while the Navigation 2016 International Small-Form Ceramics Symposium will gather artists from Latvia and the Baltics.

Creation of a fire sign in Reņķa Garden 10 on 11 November has become a beautiful tra-dition where all citizens and guests are welcome to set down their own candle. Whereas, on 18 November, on the 98th anniversary of the Republic of Latvia, guests are welcome to the theatre house Sea Gates 4 for a national holiday concert and to Tilta Garden 11 for musical performances and a celebratory fireworks show. On 21 December at Dzirnavu Square 12 , the Yule Log Evening, or winter solstice celebrations according to ancient tra-ditions, will be held with singing, dancing and games, as well as dragging and burning of the Yule log. Ventspils invites you to see in the New Year with a magnificent fireworks show at a special place and time – at the beautifully restored Lielais Square 1 at exactly 00:33:44.

The end of December, when the Mazbānī-tis 8 , narrow gauge train is roused from its winter dormancy at the Seaside Open-Air Museum 6 , is special every year. This year, all fans of the train are welcome to Mazbānītis Festival on 25 December to go on a ride through the Seaside Park 9 and participate in various winter activities and creative workshops.

On Saturday, 3 December, the Castle of the Livonian Order 5 will be hosting Saint Nicholas’ Day events and activities. Elf workshops will welcome everyone who likes oven-baked apples and the smell of home-made gingerbread cookies and all of those willing to learn something new.

At the Kurzeme Demo Centre 14 you can see an exposition on climate change, as well as technological products manu-factured in Kurzeme. In cooperation with SIA Aspired, students are welcome to visit technological creative workshops, where they will be able to build bridges from pa-sta, make glow-in-the-dark plasticine and build a wind generator.

Creative House 18 offers an exciting pla-netarium star show and 360 degree films about nature, space and planets; meanwhile, at the observatory you can watch the Sun, planets, binary stars and nebulae through a high quality telescope. We particularly wel-come preschoolers to our entertaining ed-ucational programme, where they will learn how to locate Ursa Major and Polaris, as well as what the shapes and colours of stars are together with a pedagogue.

Deer Garden 22 gives all nature lovers a chan-ce to see red deer, fal-low deer and wild boars in their natural habitat. There is an observation deck by the wild boar en-closure, while the fallow deer can be seen from the roadside or the 6.5 m tall observation tower in the garden’s territory.

Olympic Centre Ventspils 13 offers active recreation opportunities du-ring the cold part of the year too. You will find exercising and athletics ro-oms at the Basketball Hall, and an ice skating rink at the Ice Hall. At the Sports House Centrs 15 anyone can visit the shooting range, where one can shoot either with pneumatic or combat guns, at Sports Hall Pār venta 16 you will find an 11 m high climbing wall, while lovers of all things extreme will ap-preciate the training opportunities offered by the Winter Skatepark 17 .

Pārventa Library 21 is a place you will always want to return to as it not only at-tracts visitors with its beautiful premises and the vast selection of literature but is also a great place for creative meetings, concerts and excellent exhibitions.

Evangelican Lutheran Church of Usma The church is an architecturally unusual log building with an untraditional interior, which has a window with a view to the beautiful sce-nery outside instead of an altarpiece. Chande-liers are made from woven bulrush. It is a mo-dern building built using the donations of the congregation. +371 26463444

Zlēkas Manor, park and church A manor ensemble built for the von Baehr fa-mily (18th-19th century) with a beautiful park, outdoor stage and picnic tables.
