He was unable to make it due to the very thing he was to speak about, the air transportation of chil- dren in need of lifesaving medical treatment. Kid’s Wings, founded in Brighton, MI in 2004, provides this description on their web- site: “Kid's Wings is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization based in SE Michigan that pro- vides free flights to those in financial and medical need of transportation to, from, or through this area for treatment. Flights are provided in small, privately owned or leased aircraft at no cost to the recipient. Our focus is on children but the service is available to all who meet the requirements, regardless of age.” Mike Dabbs noted that Kid’s Wings came to the attention of our club some 10 years or so ago when applying for a grant and that our very own Burt Lamkin has been involved with the organization. Everyone involved with Kid’s Wings donates his or her time and 97% of all funds re- ceived go towards providing flights. KID’S WINGS Our scheduled speaker for today was Dick Lawrence of Kid’s Wings. He was unable to make it due to the very thing he was to speak about, the air transportation of chil-dren in need of lifesaving medical treatment. Mr. Lawrence was busy with an emer-gency situation and hopes to speak to us about this great organization sometime in the future.

GUESTS AT OUR CLUB...

Fred Sanchez did a good job of remembering our guests today after the sign-up sheet went missing. We welcomed Jack Pross, former president of two Kiwanis clubs and possi-ble prospective new member, Arno Buhrer, spouse of Pat Buhrer, Esther Hampton, spouse of President William Hampton, Scott Virgo, president of the Ypsilanti Kiwanis Club, Robbie Durant, grandson of Clarence Dukes, and Bonnie Hughes, spouse of Dave Hughes. A big welcome to all!

HOSPITALITY… We gave a hearty Welcome Back to Sue Dailey, who was looking great and as happy to see us as we were to see her!

Mary Stewart is suffering from shingles, let’s keep her in our thoughts. She’s a big part of keeping our thrift sale functioning so please, if you’re able, try to put in an extra hour or two at the store over the next few weeks while she’s away. This would also be a great time to try volunteering at the sale if you haven’t yet done so. It’s always fun and you get to know members and volunteers you wouldn’t normally be able to spend time with.

Ken Hillenburg took this opportunity to encourage us all to get the new Shingrix shingles vaccine to prevent this painful and debilitating condition. Even if you’ve received the older vaccine, the new one is advised for further protection.

ANNOUNCEMENTS...

We’re sad to announce the news that Past President Betsy Ford is moving to Flori-da. This means she will no longer be attending Kiwanis functions. She wanted every-one to know that Kiwanis means so much to her and that she has received, from her perspective, much more than she has given. Fred Sanchez and Dan Burroughs gra-ciously agreed to take over Betsy’s July hospitality and August greeter duties.

Sign Up Genius - Please remember to create an account and provide Bob Gray with your schedule of availability through Sign Up Genius at your earliest convenience. Bob can provide instructions or you can drop by the KC for assistance or use of a computer there. This will help Bob tremendously and will also give us a better idea of the staffing needs each week at the thrift store.

Past President Alan Burg thanks the Special Committee for Staffing Needs for all their work in coming up with the 15 recommended actions to be discussed at the up-coming board meeting. A final report of these recommendations and actions to be tak-en will be provided at a future date.

Mike Dabbs gave a report of the grant applications and funding rec-ommendations for the upcoming year. There were 85 organizations ap-plying for $260,000 in grants, $197,000 of which will be fulfilled. Once finalized, a full report will be prepared and distributed listing the organiza-tions we support, along with the scholarships awarded and other infor-mation on those we’ve assisted.

Voucher Volunteers are still needed for the months of July, August, and September. Please see Ellen Webb to sign up.

FINES...

In keeping with the theme of the meeting, a fine was proposed on all those who have never flown a child anywhere in an emergency, with a follow up fine for those who have never paid for the fuel for such a flight. Ken Hillenburg objected to two fines being pro-posed together but we ended up paying anyway.

HAPPY DOLLARS...

Larry French was happy to announce that he and Kathie Wilder are co-chairs of the 2019 Kiwanis International Michi-gan District Convention, of which our Ann Arbor club will be hosts. They’ll have a better idea of the tasks and scheduling needs in the near future and will let us all know how we can help.

Chris Winkler was happy to attend, with his wife Noel, his 50th reunion from Bucknell University in the beautiful Susquehanna Valley in PA. Even better, he and Noel are also celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.

Clarence Dukes was happy to be able to appeal for help with his cell phone, which even tech support can’t seem to figure out. Contact him if you have a provider you’re actually happy with—seriously, this statement isn’t a joke.

Garry Donner, with the Royal wedding in mind, was happy to teach is all how we, too, can be roy-als. You can now refer to him as Lord Henry Spen-cer Tudor.

Kathie Wilder was happy for Meal on Wheels and the help they provide to those in need. To emphasize the need for this service, she noted that one of our members suffering some medical issues is relying on this service and doesn’t know what she’d do without them. Kathie’s was also in the great state of PA, celebrating a family re-union of relatives tracing back to 1733!

Jane Talcott had happy dollars for a few things; the Cross Campership Challenge and the extension of the deadline to donate, a visit to the Horning dairy farm and the anniversary of the Manchester tornado that took many homes in her area but spared her own.

Bud Roberts was happy for the Kiwanis members who volunteered to assist with last weekend’s First Responders Salute for all of Washtenaw County. Let’s keep all those who risk their own safety for the safety of other’s in our thoughts and prayers!

Mike Dabbs had a happy dollar to make up for the time he’s been out for the last three months. He’s been traveling from WV to DC to Europe, with his favorite stop being at Normandy.

Evan LeRoy had a happy dollar for his daughter Lucy, who both gradu-ated from kindergarten and turned six this week. Go Lucy!

Larry Dittmar was happy for two things… The Washtenaw Concert Band has an upcoming concert this Thursday, June 21 at the Towsley Au-ditorium at WCC. He’s also happy that a recent health scare for Prudy turned out to be much less serious than they thought.

Fred Sanchez has a dollar for his nephew who’s serving in the military in areas with a lot of conflict. He asks that we keep him and all those who serve in our thoughts and prayers. He also has a dollar for President Wil-liam’s efforts to fill the Tiger’s bus.

SOCIAL EVENTS AND RECOGNITION...

The A2 NAACP Annual Juneteenth Celebration was extremely suc-cessful this year. President Wil-liam spent the day at the event and reminded members of the 25th an-nual celebration next year at Wheeler Park.

Speaking of President William, he’s now a certified Tourism Am-bassador for both Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti! Being a two-time gradu-ate of Leadership Ann Arbor, he’s a great choice to promote our beauti-ful city and surrounding areas.

Our Annual Summer Picnic is scheduled for Sunday, August 5th from noon to 3 PM. There will be horse & buggy rides and lots of games. If you would like to help, contact Mary Stewart or Marianne D’Angelo.

Our Kiwanis Club Tiger Game Out-ing is scheduled for Saturday, Au-gust 11th. The Detroit Tigers will play the Minnesota Twins. The cost is $70 and includes chartered bus transportation, sandwich, pop, chips, and munchies. Please see Fred Sanchez for additional infor-mation and to purchase tickets. Free entertainment also provided by Fred.

The FHLBank Indianapolis award-ed Jim Wolfington, Vice Presi-dent, Chelsea State Bank with the Community Spirit Award at the 2018 Building Michigan Communities Conference. The Community Spirit Award honors individuals that show an outstanding dedication to affordable housing and community eco-nomic development. Congrats, Jim!

THREE-MINUTE SPEECH...

New Member Mark Lavin gave his 3-minute speech today, telling us about life before and after Eloise. Anyone who knows Eloise knows the “after” is the better half. As owners of Lavin Consulting, LLC, Mark and Eloise have come up with some very innovating tech-niques to help companies save both time and money. One job in particular saw them pre-paring specs to reduce the time of a project from two weeks to four hours…pretty amazing! Thanks for sharing, Mark, and for being a part of our Club.
