TODAY’S PROGRAM…
Being Miss Michigan
Charlie Phibbs introduced our Speaker, Miss Michigan 2017, Heather Kendrick. He first met her while judging the Miss Washtenaw County Pageant in October, 2016, which she won. She then became Miss Michigan in June of 2017 and went on to compete in the Miss America pageant in September 2017. He knows her from the Washtenaw County pageant and because she and her housemate became neighbors of his last summer. From Marysville Michigan, She is a violinist and a graduate of the University of Michigan with degrees in Music Education, Violin Performance, and the Study of Organizations. As an Arts Professional, she works with her platform as Miss Michigan to advance the arts and education. She is an advocate for promoting education, daily, through
‘STEAM’ (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math).
Heather is the Program Director for M Prize competition, the world’s largest competition for chamber music. She is the Operations Director for the Cambridge International String Academy at the University of Cambridge, UK. You may have caught Heather on last sea-son’s Americas Got Talent with Detroit's Elec-tric Pop Violin Band, ‘New Classica'. A former Miss Michigan encouraged Heather to com-pete in the Miss America pageant and she was thrilled to represent her state in this com-petition.
Heather started her talk by saying that her Dad is a Kiwanian in the Blue Water Club in Port Huron where he is a past president. She said that being Miss Michigan is not about the sash or the crown—they give her that so you can recognize her. She tells the young people that she talks to that otherwise she would just look like your sister or mom. Heather said the competition is really about what’s in your heart and in your head—that’s what really matters. She said that there are four points on the Miss Michigan crown that are symbolic of Miss America. The four points represent: Style, Success, Scholarship, and Service. As Miss Michigan she has gotten to go to many service organizations and clubs and she really admires what we do, that we are living lives of service in our communities. She said that service to others is what the competitors in the Miss America pageant are trying to do.

She said that before the actual Miss America competition they have a rehearsal and she was the win-ner in that mock competition. She did not win in the actual competition that followed, but did make a lot of good friends.

GUESTS AT OUR CLUB...

HOSPITALITY… At the very beginning of today’s meeting President William asked for a moment of silence in honor of Sheridan Springer—long-time mem-ber and friend, with 59 years of service.
Kathy Barden-Perlberg, with assistance from Dale Leslie, placed note cards with geraniums on each table. She urged us to draw a picture, write a story, draw a smiley face, just do something for Sherry Springer. Kathy would then pick these cards up and take them to the family at the memorial service to be held for Sherry that evening at Staffan-Mitchel Funeral Home in Chelsea. Kathy wanted Sherry’s wife, Sally and their daughters—Sherry,
Shannon, and Shelly—to have the cards that evening.
The funeral will be Tuesday, April 24, with visitation at the First Congregational Church in Ann Arbor, on the corner of State Street and William Street, at 2:00 PM and the funeral service to follow at 3:00. The family has asked that donations honoring Sherry be made to Kiwanis. Kathy thanked Kathy Wilder for getting donation envelops ready so promptly.
President William added that Sherry attended last week’s Board meeting. He was thankful that he got an opportunity to shake his hand and look into his eyes and exchange smiles. What he did not do, which he feels very badly about, is not intro-ducing him at that meeting. He apologized to his old buddy and hopes his apolo-gy is heard by him.

FINES... There was a proposal from the floor to fine all members that had not attended one of last week’s Interclubs. Dave Drake seconded that motion and he also said that there would be no discus-sion. President William then called for a vote and once again, it was unanimously passed.
HAPPY DOLLARS... Emily Allshouse was happy for asking for prayers for healing, strength and comfort for a
seven year old girl who is battling neuroblastoma.
Chris Winkler was happy for his daughter, Becky and son-in-law Binod who will celebrate the five-year anniversary of the opening of their Cardamom Restaurant in Ann Arbor on April 26th.
Dave Drake was happy remembering his old friend Sherry Springer. He said that he and Sherry went to Junior High School together. They often played touch football and Sherry, being a bit chubby even then, asking Dave to pass the ball to him. Dave would toss the ball his way and he frequently dropped it and then would come back to the huddle telling Dave to throw the ball his way again, where he would again drop the ball. Dave fondly remembered Sherry saying to just give him the ball and he would outrun the defense. Because of Sherry’s build, Dave was skeptical of his running ability. Dave told us that Sherry’s brother-in-law was Bob Uffer.
Max Ziegler was happy for any parent or grandparent who has a child at Pioneer High School that will be attending a summer chorale music camp in Petoskey this summer as he knows the camp director. Max would be happy to speak with any parent or grandparent that has a child going there to fill them in on any details that they might need.
Joe Medrano was happy to say that he made it through a sea cruise to the Bahamas in good shape and that gives him confidence that he can look forward to more of this type of travel in the future.
Harry Cross was happy for the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra’s performance this past weekend at Hill Auditorium of a requiem by Verdi. This was a very difficult piece but was played quite impressively. It will be re-broadcast on WRCJ, FM radio on May 5th at 5 PM and again on May 6th at noon. WRCJ is 90.9 on the FM dial. Harry recommends that we try to make time to listen to one of these re-broadcasts.
Peter Schork was happy for our Scholar-ship Awards meeting next week. He asked for our patience in accommodating all of the guests that we expect to attend that meeting.

HOSPITALITY CONTINUED FROM PAGE 2... Kathy said that in all the years that she has been a Kiwanian that this is the first time that she has done Hospitality and she says that ‘it has been just brutal’ due to the many recent sad events.
Kathy gave us an update on Sue Dailey who is back at home and feeling better. It will take a long time for her to recuperate so it may be a bit of time before we see her again at another meeting. Kathy asked us to think of her, give her a call, or send her a card or an e-mail. Kathy said that being cooped up like this will be hard on someone as active as Sue.
Kathy wanted to wish her friend Deb Jones a ‘Happy Birthday’ because today was her birthday but Deb was not in attendance. Hap-py birthday Deb!
Bob Gray added that Meg Stevenson, who volunteers in our Jewelry Department, is recovering from knee replacement.
President William noted that W. Scott Westerman passed away recently. Scott was a former Superintendent of the Ann Arbor Public Schools and he was an Honorary Kiwanian of our club.
ANNOUNCEMENTS...
President William reminded us to park in the back of the parking lot next week so as to make room for our many guests coming for our Scholarship Awards meeting.
Alan Berg announced, per our by-laws, the slate of candidates for Special and Annual elections scheduled two weeks from today. The time of the election on Monday, May 7 is from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. Those eligible to vote are Kiwanis members who are in “good standing” which means that his/her annual dues are paid. Must be present to vote. If any member has a ques-tion about his/her eligibility, they should contact Secretary Kathie Wilder prior to the election. Results will be announced, later in that meeting, after the regularly scheduled program. The list of candidates is shown on Page 7 of this newsletter.
Margaret Krasnoff said we have received a very large Doll House as a donation. It is in the Doll House restoration room in a couple of pieces, but it is of a very solid, handmade construction. It is 46 inches across and about 33 inches tall. It sits on a table and is a bit beyond our capacity to restore. If anyone has a use for this doll house, or if anyone knows anyone with expertise in this area please let Margaret know. She said that it would be a very good project for a summer day camp or for a scout troop.
Larry Dittmar was pleased to say that when he came to Ann Arbor, W. Scott Westerman was the Superintendent of the Ann Arbor Public School System. Larry said at that time Scott held dinners for all new hires that came in that year. Larry said that that was a very special thing to do. Larry also reminded us that this Thursday night, 7:30 at Huron High School, there will be a free concert of concertos. These students are going to blow you away. The top violinist in the state of Michigan for this year wil l be playing. He said that it will be a stunning performance.
President William said that with all of the bad news we had gotten that Fred Sanchez had volunteered to cheer us up. There were some groans from the audience but then the audience started chanting, Fred, Fred, Fred… Fred then thanked us and proceeded to show something special that came into the Antiques Department that he was sure a Spartan Fan would love. It was an old cuckoo-type clock with a picture of Spartan Sta-dium on the lower half, still in the original packaging. Fred proceeded to open bidding at $10 to start the auction. Bidding quickly went up from there and for a while was quite intense between Lynne Lande and John Schenk. Eventually John won at $50.
President William announced that his plan had been to give us an overview of the 3 hour and 15 minute Board meeting that they had last week, but since he loves Happy Dollars he said he would skip over the Board Meeting summary for now and deliv-er it in two weeks in order to make time for Happy Dollars today. He asked that all Happy Dollar participants not take too long.
INTERCLUBS AND SUPER-INTERCLUBS… Dave Drake told us that there were two Interclubs last week and we had six members at each of them. Charlie Phibbs and Dale Leslie, along with Dave were at both of them. These were at Chelsea and at Ann Arbor Western. Dave said that those of us that were absent would be marked accordingly. He expects to see us at the next Interclub which he will notify us about when he gets noti-fication of that meeting.
There will be a super-interclub at South Lyon on June 11 and at the Manchester club on May 23. The Ypsilanti Club will have a super-interclub meeting in June on the 15th or on the 22nd. They expect that Debbie Dingle will be their featured speaker. Saline will have a super-interclub meeting on the 18th of June.
SOCIAL ACTIVITIES...
Fred Sanchez says it’s time to think spring and baseball. The annual Tiger trip is Saturday, August 11th against Minnesota. The cost is only $70 including, game, bus ride, lunch. See Fred to sign up.
The A2Y Regional Chamber golf outing is June 11 at Polo Fields. Registration info available here. All Ann Arbor Kiwanians are members of the Chamber and eligible to participate.

Both the SPECIAL ELECTION (President Elect vacancy) and the regular ANNUAL ELECTION will be held on the SAME DATE: Monday, May 7, 2018 for seven positions (see bold below) *
The names of the Candidates, the Special and Annual Election date of May 7, 2018, will be announced on two Mondays, April 16 and April 23 at the regularly scheduled Club and Foundation noon meet-ings. No election announcement on April 30, due to it being Scholarship Day.
SPECIAL ELECTION to fill the current 2018 vacancy of Board Officer President Elect. (Effective now through Sep-tember 30, 2018.)
