DENILIQUIN

The Deni Blues & Roots is not your typical music event.

Now in its second year, the two-day music mecca features 26 performing individuals and bands, including a host of international acts, on the Easter weekend, Saturday and Sunday April 19 and 20.

But it’s the unique, almost indescribable atmosphere that surrounds the festival which has quickly earned it a bucket list reputation.

It’s a relaxed, laid back feeling where patrons unfold the camp chair or spread out the rug on the sprawling festival site just north of Deniliquin, on the Conargo Rd.

It’s where the likes of Santana, Status Quo, Bonnie Raitt, Jason Mraz, Chris Isaak and Steve

Miller Band wowed thousands who attended the inaugural 2013 festival, and where the 2014 international acts include John Mayer, Boz Scaggs, The Doobie Brothers, Elvis Costello & The Imposters, Russell Morris and Gary Clark Jr, to name just a few.

There are few music festivals of this stature where you see children, parents and grandparents spread-eagled on the expansive lawn in front of the stages, although sometimes grandad leaves his clan to stand in the mosh pit and get up close and personal with his idols.

Peppin Heritage CentreThe Peppin Heritage Centre,

which incorporates the Visitor Information Centre, is an ideal starting point when you arrive in Deniliquin.

The regional museum is home to some fantastic exhibitions throughout autumn.

From the end of March, patrons are able to peruse about 40 works

from the famed Bald Archy Prize.

The satirical version of the Archibald Prize is always well worth a look.

On April 5, author Stephen Burns will be at the PHC for a book signing of 'Once, a Splendid Coin: An Arcadian Story Behind the 1938 Shilling.'

The book details the story

behind the top Australian Peppin Merino, Uardry 0.1, who was the ram on the shilling coin.

The Water Management Exhibition will be on display throughout May, and will be held in conjunction with the Flood Management Conference hosted by Deniliquin Council.

It will detail the wet and dry cycle of the Murray and Edward/Wakool river system.

In July, the Peppin Heritage Centre will exhibit photography works presented by the Edward River Art Society.

Called ‘In Focus’, it is an exhibition displaying photography from around the region.

On Friday, August 15, the lush grounds at the visitor centre will be filled with 200 sheep for the Elders Riverina Sheep Expo.

Returning to the Peppin Heritage Centre after a successful event last year, the expo will feature the crowning of the Riverina and Supreme Ram of the Year awards, as well as a wool fashion parade for women.

The Peppin Heritage Centre, situated on the corner of George and Napier streets, is open daily from 9am to 4pm.

Entry to the museum is by gold coin donation, and there is a range of tourism material and Deniliquin produce and souvenirs available.

Now in its 22nd year, the Rotary Easter Art Show will be held from Friday, April 18 to Monday, April 21 at the Deniliquin High School multi-purpose centre.

The annual gala event, which showcases works of local artists, boasts a total prize pool of $12,000 for 2014.

The art show has become a Deniliquin Easter tradition and attracts many visitors.

All proceeds from entry charges and percentages on sales go directly to community service projects.

The show will be judged by Kialla artist Ross Paterson (pictured).

Art categories for 2014, and the associated prize money with each, are:

Rotary Easter Art Show

McLean BeachIt’s not summer, but autumn

is still a good time of the year to take advantage of Deniliquin’s Edward River.

The river passes right through the centre of Deniliquin, and is truly picturesque.

There are many vantage points to the Edward River, just one of which is McLean Beach, in west Deniliquin.

A popular swimming and

skiing spot, the beach is also the starting point of the delightful Beach to Beach walk.

McLean Beach has a double boat ramp, which allows enough room for two cars to launch their boats at the same time, as well as a sealed carpark to accommodate boat trailers.

There is also a new toilet amenities block and a picnic area, which includes a free barbecue facility.

The popular Anzac Day races will return to the Deniliquin Racecourse this year.

Held on the Friday after Easter, the five-race card is set to attract a large crowd of returned service personnel, socialites and keen punters.

The main race is the Deniliquin RSL Club Diggers Cup.

With the first race due to kick off early in the afternoon, the hoard of hopeful racegoers will converge on the Deniliquin Racecourse following the Anzac Day commemorations in the town centre.

Bookies will be set up on course and for the more universal punter a TAB outlet will provide local and Australia-wide opportunities.

The race day will be free admission for returned service men and women.

While the final touches are still being put on the event, many of the long-standing attractions will return.

There will be seven categories in the popular Fashions on the Fields judging, from tiny tots right through to best dressed couple.

Children's entertainment will be provided with face painting and a range of activities to keep the young at heart entertained.

Visitors to the racecourse can pack their own delicious picnic lunch or choose from a selection of hot and cold food which will be available on the day.

As the event continues into the afternoon, a fully licensed bar will help you to remain in high spirits.

For those intending to visit the bar at the racecourse, or for those who want to leave the car at home, a bus services for patrons will be available on the day for a gold coin donation.

The bus will gather patrons from various locations around Deniliquin including motels, caravan parks, and pubs and clubs.

There are plenty of things to do and places to see in Deniliquin and district.

This is a list of some of the more popular attractions …

Deniliquin Regional Park: The forest, which was converted to a Regional Park in 2010, follows the road along the river in Memorial Park. Visit Willoughby’s Beach, great fishing spots, forest drives and walks.

Lawson Syphons: Construction of the Lawson Syphons started in 1939 but was not finished until 1955 after being delayed because of World War Two. This engineering masterpiece carries irrigation water from the Murray River via the Mulwala Canal under the Edward River to serve Deniboota (Deniliquin and Womboota) Irrigation District. The main access to the syphon is via Finley Rd and a key is required to be picked up from the Visitor Information Centre ($10 refundable deposit).

Stevens Weir: Situated 25kms west of Deniliquin, off the Wakool Rd,

the weir opened in 1935 and controls water for the Wakool Irrigation Scheme. Picnic areas and toilet facilities are available.

North Deniliquin trek: Across the National Bridge in Davidson St there is an Aboriginal Heritage Walkway in the Deniliquin State Forest with a river track and coolamon scars on the trees marked.

Town Hall: Constructed in 1876, the building was popular for holding balls, picture shows and many other functions for local residents.

Waring Gardens: The Waring Gardens are located in the CBD and provide a breathtaking setting for locals and visitors. The gardens are named after the town’s first town clerk, John Waring who was instrumental in the establishment of the area. An obelisk was erected in 1888 in his memory. The Simpson Band Rotunda was opened in 1913 and has recently been restored. A Gallipoli Lone Pine has been planted near the War Memorial Gates as a tribute to those

who served at Gallipoli in World War One. Located within the gardens is also a large bird aviary, a children’s playground and a toilet block.

Deniliquin Courthouse: The Deniliquin Courthouse is a magnificent, imposing building in Poictiers St and has been restored to its former glory inside and out. The building dates back to 1883 and is still in use today. It looks spectacular when floodlit at night.

The Multi Arts Centre: The Multi Arts Centre on the corner of Cressy and Edwardes Sts provides a public gallery and hall, while the Sunday

School is a workshop for many of the local art and craft groups. The restored statues of The Three Muses, which once graced the now defunct Deniliquin School of Arts have been mounted outside the Multi Arts Centre.

Deniliquin Island Sanctuary: The Island Sanctuary, situated near the town centre, is an oasis of four hectares of natural river red gum forest. Kangaroos, as well as many different species of birds, have been observed in the sanctuary. Bushwalking tracks and a barbecue area provides the sanctuary with a popular picnic spot for visitors.

A variety of world class concerts will be on offer as part of the South West Music 2014 Concert Series. Generous funding from Arts NSW and local sponsors has made it possible to bring fantastic musicians to the area at a price that rivals anything you would pay in the city. In partnership with South West Arts, 9 concerts will be presented throughout the year in Deniliquin, and surrounding towns.

The Beggars kick off the series with a joyful all-singing tribute to great vocal harmony groups: ‘Peter Paul and Mary’, ‘The Mummas and the Pappas’, ‘The Bee Gees’ and many more. Catch them at Blighty Hall on Friday March 21st or Mathoura Hall on Sunday March 23rd

at 2.00pm. “The best Australian vocal band since The Seekers.” Normie Rowe

On Sunday May 25th at 2.00pm be thrilled by The Enigma Quartet. An intrepid Sydney-based string quartet who are acclaimed for their vibrant and dynamic performance style. Playing an eclectic mix of classic & contemporary music, they appeal to audiences both young and old alike.

Picnic Point is awash with natural heritageNowhere else can you

experience the world's largest Redgum forest, a magnificent treed floodplain with a unique river system and wetlands positioned perfectly on the mighty Murray River.

One suck landmark, the Cadell Fault, is a ridge running from Echuca to Deniliquin, which was formed when the land was thrust upwards by earthquakes tens of thousands of years ago.

This uplifted section of land diverted the Murray River’s wester flow, creating new floodplains and a complex system of lakes and creeks.

The Cobb Highway runs along the uplifted portion, some 15m above land east of the fault, making it possible in some places to look directly over the canopy of trees growing on the lower level.

Celebrate at the Mathoura Easter FairCelebrate Easter with the

Mathoura community at the annual Easter Fair.

Held over two days, the popular fair is fun for the whole family.

The Mathoura Easter Fair introduces you to the friendly community, and also highlights some of the best parts of the town.

On Easter Saturday, April 19, a market and family fun day will be held at the Memorial Park in Livingstone St (centre of town).

A variety of market stalls will be on site, allowing you to pick up some last minute Easter gifts or just something to brighten up your home.

There will be a range of games on the day, including egg and spoon races and a tiny tot competition expected to start at 11am.

Another attraction for the youngsters is the newly opened skate park. The fair runs from 9am to 1pm, but the Easter fun does not stop there.

On Sunday, the fair celebrations move to the banks of the Murray River. Held at Picnic Point, there'll be a pooch parade and the ever -popular duck race.

All the fun kicks off in the afternoon, allowing you plenty of time to enjoy your Easter eggs and hot cross buns in the morning.

There will be some fantastic prizes up for grabs in the pooch parade, which starts at noon, so bring your dog along.

New speed shearing event

March is set to be a big month for Conargo Shire, with a new event added to its calendar.

A speed shear competition will be held at Conargo Hotel on March 22.

Shearing contractor Mo Poka and others from the local area have developed the event and Mr Poka said there has already been keen interest due to a substantial prize pool.

‘‘We certainly think the prize money will lure a lot of shearers – it's almost $20,000,’’ he said.

‘‘We have five competition sections – open, senior, intermediate, veterans and ladies.

‘‘We will also have a contractor relay, and the finale will be the Trans Tasman event.’’

Mr Poka said the event is aimed to follow on from the

success of the Deniliquin Show shearing competition earlier in the month and to also help boost the Conargo Shire economy.

‘‘A couple of us contractors were talking about an event, and we wanted to help the Conargo community out a bit too,’’ Mr Poka said.

‘‘Registration starts at 11am with live action beginning at 1pm.

‘‘We hope to finish the heats by 5pm, break for dinner and then have twilight finals.’’

Mr Poka said the detailed schedule for the day would be known once shearer registrations are finalised.

Conargo Mother’s Day MarketThe Conargo Mother’s Day

Market, held annually on Mother’s Day, will celebrate its 20th year in 2014.

Set within the Conargo Recreation Reserve, the village oval comes alive with more than 2000 people attending the event each year.

It has a strong ‘home grown, sewn, made and baked’ ethos, and the committee only allows products that have been hand or homemade as a point of difference to other markets. It is also a means of supporting local and regionally-based producers.

The market has close to 100 speciality stalls as well as a gourmet food marquee with tastes from

around the world, a farmers' market and children’s activities.

Each year, the Conargo Mother’s Day Market endeavours to support a charity — this year it is Diabetes Australia.

Diabetes Australia focuses on all types of diabetes including people with Type 1 and Type 2, women with gestational diabetes, people with other forms of diabetes, their families and carers, and people at risk of developing diabetes.

Previously, the Conargo Mother’s Day Market has supported national charities including the National Stroke Foundation’s FAST awareness campaign, Breast Cancer Foundation, the Ovarian Cancer Foundation, The Heart

Foundation, along with more regionally-based charities such as the Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation, which raises awareness of organ and tissue donation.

A cash donation to the charity of choice is also made post-event.

This year’s event will also give market-goers the opportunity to win a lucky gate prize and there are

free gifts to mums on the day.

The market has plenty of children’s activities and caters for patrons of all ages and families.

It runs from 9.30am to 3.30pm on Sunday, May 11. Entry is $5 and strictly no dogs allowed (guide dogs exempt).

Kyabram Fauna ParkThe Kyabram Fauna Park

has the second largest range of Australian fauna in Victoria.

Catering for animal lovers since 1967, the park covers some 55 hectares of open woodland, wetlands, and lakes.

With more than 160 animals including native birds and insect species unique to Australia, summer is a good a time as any to visit the Kyabram Fauna Park.

A highlight this season is the new interactive koala exhibit and the park also features alpine dingoes, owls, snakes, wombats, kangaroos, wallabies, Tasmanian devils, cockatoos, parrots, waterfowl, cranes, finches, lizards and much more.

Spring kept keepers busy with a number of baby birds being born including superb parrots, regent parrots, princess parrots and cockatiels.

The park also houses bush stone-curlews. This elusive,

mainly nocturnal bird is similar to the road runners that inhabit North America and have a diet of frogs, spiders, snakes and small mammals.

The park is ideal for school groups of all ages to learn about the fauna first hand, by watching them in their natural habitat.

It is fully equipped with a 100-seat theatre, classrooms for organised learning and there is a fauna ecologist on site four days a week to answer any questions you may have.

Finley Monster WeekendFinley’s Monster Weekend is on

The weekend will be jam packed with crowd favourites including Central Business District Market Days commencing on Friday, followed by the two-day Monster Garage Sales throughout town on Saturday and Sunday.

Garage sale organiser Gil Silby said the 13th annual town sale is set to bring scores of visitors to Finley.

‘‘It runs on Saturday and Sunday, with the Sunday being optional for vendors,’’ he said.

‘‘There are usually about 40 participants and we are expecting the same this year.

‘‘People travel from all over the region to attend, it creates a lot of interest.’’

There is a small fee to hold a stall and vendors should book at least 10 days prior to the event.

The Finley Amateur Dramatic and Musical Society will perform skits at the Finley Golf Club on the Friday night, and on Saturday locals and visitors can enjoy a fabulous morning at the Farmers' Market by the lake.

Finley’s Car Club will again host ‘Big Boys Toys’ on Sunday that will feature a huge show ‘n’ shine of cars, trucks, motorbikes and boats.

New this year will be 'REXPO – for the love of dogs', which is the brainchild of Max Whittaker.

Max is aiming for the world record for the most singing dogs and the lead star will be Wolfie, Finley’s famous singing dog.

Australian Frisbie Champions, Jeff Socha and his dog Brodie will be there to demonstrate their skills.

There will be a dog high jump, sponsored by Southern Riverina Livestock & Property, and novelty events for kids and their dogs, with lots of prizes and give-aways.

Doll your pet up in fancy dress and enter them in REX Factor to show off their special talents.

A ‘flea’ market and ‘dog’s breakfast’ will complete a day of all things canine. Bring your pampered pooch and join in the fun.

Tocumwal Blowhole: When the Murray River is low, the iconic

Tocumwal Blowhole flows and bubbles.

According to locals, Aboriginal people believed a giant Murray Cod lived at the bottom of the blowhole.

Other people believe it’s the mouth of an underground stream connected to the Murray.

The blowhole is situated on a granite outcrop about 11km north of Tocumwal on Rocks Rd.

Jerilderie is currently recognised for producing 24% of the national tomato crop.

Attractions

A miniature steam rail track nestled along the banks of the Billabong Creek near Horgan's Walk, a 1.8km nature walk attracts many visitors. Check out the Ned Kelly Post Office and other sites that Ned visited in the town.

The Mini Railway

The Mini Railway has been constructed by a small band of enthusiasts who have formed the Jerilderie Steam Rail and Heritage Committee and runs on the second Sunday of each month and by appointment. Take the bridge over the Billabong Creek behind the Jerilderie Museum to see the beautifully assembled mini rail with stations.

Horgan's Walk

Horgan's Walk is an easy 10 minute walk along the banks of the Billabong Creek starting at Luke Park near Lake Jerilderie. The Walk passes many historic sites that are marked with signs giving a brief history of the area.

Steel Wings Windmill

Situated at Luke Park adjacent Lake Jerilderie, this structure is truly a magnificent sight. Made in Sydney in 1909-1910, the windmill was erected at Goolgumbla Station and used for stock and domestic supplies. Due to wind damage the item was rendered unserviceable until a Local Restoration Committee

resurrected it in its present position in 1979. It stands 50 foot (15.24 metres) tall, has a wheel diameter of 25 foot (7.62 metres) and a tail length of 24 foot (7.315 metres).

Railway Station

The Jerilderie Railway Station was first constructed in 1884 and represents a grand picture in the history of this transport facility. The station underwent repairs and improvements to coincide with the Centenary Celebrations October 26 to 28, 1984. The station closed operations on the 9th February, 1987. A project to renovate the station was undertaken by the Jerilderie Historical Society in conjunction with the Jerilderie Council in April, 1993, and it was used for residential purposes for some years. In 2001 State Rail provided the funding and in

conjunction with the Jerilderie Shire Council's Heritage Advisor, restored the building to its former glory. Set amongst tall, shady gums and with its landscaped lawn the Railway Station is a great place to stop and soak up some history.

Lake Jerilderie and Luke Park

The lake was officially opened in February, 1979, following its construction by a group of enthusiasts presently known as the Jerilderie Aquatic Club. The water area is 5.3 ha. and is used for water sports including skiing and enjoyed by recreationists and passing travellers.

Luke Park was developed by the Jerilderie Lions Club and provides pleasant recreation including barbecue and playground facilities in an enjoyable atmosphere. Luke Park is the gateway to the Mini Steam Rail and Horgan's Walk.
