The Running ManInterview with Darren Seaman of Nanaimo BC Ultra Marathon RunnerDarren Seaman has called Vancouver Island his home from day one He was raised in Port Alice and now resides in Nanaimo with his wife Jane, who was born in Nanaimo and teaches at a local Elementary School and their 3 boys, Nate (13) and twins Jake and Ryan (11) Having grown up in a logging fam-ily, Darren always had a love of working with wood Through years of developing his woodworking skills, Darren established his company, Creative Concepts Carpentry Inc , and has been operating in Nanaimo for the past 15 years with his talented team of crafts-men Over the years, they have completed 100's of projects throughout Central Vancouver Island and have become a reputable force in Residential and Commercial Renovations, Custom Cabinetry and Woodworking and Custom Homes

I am not sure where he finds the time but Darren is also an Ultra-Marathon runner A regular marathon is apparently not enough! Recently Darren travelled to Colorado to participate in the “Trans-Rockies” 120 mile 6 day marathon When I heard about this I called Darren to see if he’d let me interview him for What’s On Digest Nanaimo What follows is the con-versation between myself and Darren Seaman (DS) of Creative Concepts Carpentry

Rideout: Why do you run?

DS: Running keeps me in the moment and just feels natural I’ve been running since 2009 really as a way to cope and deal with stress and to keep me busy There is a freedom you get with running that I don’t think you find too many other ways

Rideout: What is your favorite place to run in Nanaimo?

DS: For me it’s Mt Benson I love trail running and the steep grade allows me to push my limits I’m mo-tivated by trying to beat my last best time The view at the top doesn’t hurt either

Rideout: Do you listen to music when running? If not what do you think about

DS: I usually listen to techno for example I don’t know if you’ve heard of Tiesto but it’s pretty up-beat and keeps me moving At times I like to un-plug and just listen to the natural sounds Nanaimo is unbeliev-able for the ready availability of nature right at our door-step So sometimes I work through issues with no music and other times I just crank the tunes

Rideout: What kind of gear would you say is the most important for you when you’re out there?

DS: Shoes are absolutely key Of course on longer runs you need to have nutrients and water Good clothing and keeping well hydrated are very impor-tant but without the right shoes you can’t really even get started

Rideout: Do you recommend a specific type of shoe?

DS: I get all my gear locally and I believe in sup-porting local businesses I buy Salomon runners from Frontrunners here in Nanaimo I use a lot of Salomon gear and find that it really stands up to a lot of pun-ishment

Rideout: So what’s the deal with the “Trans-Rock-ies” 120 mile 6 day race in Colorado? Is that right 120 miles?

DS: Yes it was in miles so that works out to 193KM and we climbed to an altitude of 20,000 feet I travelled to the area about 2 weeks prior to the race and trained at altitudes of between 9,000 and 14,000 feet It was definitely tough and I had to fight through dizziness and nausea as my body acclimated to the altitude

Rideout: How did you do in the race?

DS: Out of 500 racers there were 122 in the solo male category and I placed 6th overall At times I was in 2nd which were usually in the uphill stretches thanks to my Mt Benson training This year the times from 1st to 6th were the fastest in the history of the race

Rideout: Can you envision doing a race like that here locally in Nanaimo and would you want to have a hand in helping organize it?

DS: Yeah that’s a thought for sure The biggest issue is access and insurance but after that we definitely have the land for it and it would help to put Nanaimo on the map

Rideout: Do you have an off-season?

DS: Not really I try to get up Mt Benson year round and in Nanaimo we have that luxury since we don’t really get much snow

Rideout: What are your future plans with respect to running?

DS: The Trans-Rockies allowed me entry into what is a 1-day 100KM race and is a qualifier for the Western States 100 mile (also a 1 day race) The Western States is kind of the pinnacle for ultra-mar-athon runners

UPDATE: Since this interview Darren com-peted in the “Lost Soul Ultra Race” which is the only 100km event in Canada to act as a qualifier for the Western States 100 The race was held on September 5th in the river valley of Lethbridge, Alberta One loop is 53 Km with approximately 1200m of elevation incline and decline Most of the hills are in the 150' to 250' range and there are approximately 16 of these in one loop As a competitor in the 100 Km, two loops are done to complete the race

There were 102 starters in this race and 71 com-petitors completed the course Darren placed Number 1 out of 71 setting a new course record of 11 hours, 17 seconds

Your metabolism is the rate at which your body burns calories Some folks are blessed with a rapid metabolism however most people have to build a better metabolism in order to lose weight and stay fit A stronger metabolism can make it possible for you to lose weight without starving yourself

Your metabolism benefits from developed muscle groups and the best form of exercise to improve and increase lean muscle is fitness training Muscle mass is the most important factor in determining the amount fat your burn during the day The more lean muscle you have, the higher the metabolism you cultivate, which leads to more efficient fat burning

By doing too much cardiovascular exercise, being inactive or just by growing older, you can lose muscle For example even by just age 25 you start to lose around 1-2% of muscle mass each year Over the course of your lifetime you can lose as much as 40-50% of your muscle mass

Doing resistance training a minimum of three times a week in fifteen minute increments is essential Your plan should include a full body workout that is progressively more difficult If you do the same exercises every day or practice high reps with light weights, you not following an effective plan and you are missing out on benefits that aid in creating a stronger metabolism

If you think that you are too busy to eat or that eating less is going to help you lose weight, you may be deluding yourself When you restrict your calorie intake, it reduces your metabolism by at least 30% By not eating enough, you cause your body to go into a mode of starvation and start conserving calories This means that it holds onto the fat and uses muscle instead, leading to a slowed metabolism

Eating the right amount of food every few hours will provide your body with the fuel it needs to keep you feeling energized Also, it can help maintain muscles to keep your metabolism strong

If you are not getting the proper nutrients this may cause a 30% decline in muscle mass and result in a slower metabolism It is best to eat raw

A lot of time it is very difficult to say exactly how much weight a pet should loose That is es-pecially true in dogs They come in such a large variety of sizes and shapes, that it is almost im-possible to just look at them and determine what their exact weight should be

How do you know what your goals should be? There are a lot of methods out there that focus on a variety of formulas I use a measurement system that looks at several measurements over the pets body Then I enter these numbers into a computer program and viola out pops a number for the ideal body weight Of course, not every-one has access to this computer program Our clinic, and many others, offer a free service to their clients to get these measurements done and develop a nutrition plan

If you can't enroll in one of these programs, your next best bet is to take pictures of your friend from the top, side, front and back Every single month, take these pictures again so that you will pick up on subtle changes in the look of your pet Then use the same method that we talked about last month, feeling over the ribs, to determine how this weight is coming down

The theory behind weight reduction is very simple, you don't consume as many calories as your body spends Simple in theory, difficult in practice Take this whole month to write down everything that enters your pet's mouth Include his normal kibble, canned food, the scraps she picks up off the floor, and even that little extra

Put The Phone in the TrunkOne way to avoid the Pavlovian response to the ding of the smartphone while driving is to get in the habit of putting the phone in the trunk of your car before you get behind the wheel.

This simple action has many benefits First of all, and most importantly, you are setting the example for your passengers Let's face it when we hear our phones alerting us that we have a message it is very hard to resist Some people may check the phone while driving or others may wait until a red light before sneaking a peak It's actually illegal to do either of these things and eventually you will get nailed by the police or worse cause a serious accident When we check our messages while be-hind the wheel we are modeling a behaviour to others in the car and all around us If you do this around children they will grow up perhaps know-ing it's illegal but also having an inlking (thanks to you) that it's sort of OK You wouldn't crack a beer in the car so why is checking your phone any different? Statistics in BC show that texting

and checking your phone while driving is as dan-gerous as driving while impaired Second, when your phone is in the trunk you can talk to the other people in the car about why you do this It creates a dialogue in your family or circle of friends about the real life and death dangers of an otherwise fairly innocuous device Third, if you are unlucky enough to have an accident everyone at the scene can rule out distracted driving if your phone is not even within reach Finally, with your phone safely tucked in the trunk you can look around and no-tice all the other drivers on the road staring at their phones while trying to drive their cars When you see them make sure you salute their behavior and let them know that you don't accept the danger they present to all of us!

These days many poems seem more like prose and much prose has a poetic touch so that sometimes it is hard to see the difference between the two.

As I am not a person who likes labels, it doesn’t worry me very much, particularly with fine examples of writing such as Mary Ann Moore’s wonderful piece of advice to you on how to be a poet Mary Ann Moore is part of the team bringing in the Cascadia Poetry Festival 3 next May (April 30th-May 3rd, 2015) She is best known for her poetry workshops, her writing circles, through which, with her generous spirit, she has mentored so many budding writers in the Nanaimo area

rhododendron. Talk to a dog – and a cat and a

house f inch on the railing. Listen to poets. Go for

a beer with them. Learn colours and the names of

things. Eat a f resh f ig, slowly. Watch the phases of

the moon. Play hookey. Take a ferry to an island –

like Gabriola or Bowen or Lasqueti. Cut words out

of f lyers. Recycle them into poems. Write what you

know. What you don’t. Laugh at yourself. Cry over

lunch. Wear your nightgown past noon. Plant some

seeds. Trust. Talk to a stranger. Talk to yourself.

Phone home. Eavesdrop. Remember your dreams.

For YourhomeRetaining Walls & DrivewaysIt’s really never a bad time to start planning when you are thinking about re-doing your driveway or perhaps building a retaining wall I had hoped to publish this article in September but in this climate you never know when the weather will smile on you and allow you to tackle those projects you’ve been put-ting off You might not have known this but Hoedown Excavating here in Nanaimo can take out your old driveway and completely re-build it for you in whatever style and using whatever materials you can think of Recently I met with the owner of Hoedown, the very personable Tim Magnus, and we talked about what he does in this respect One thing that I hadn’t considered was that when you remove your old driveway you don’t necessarily have to replace it with the same materials Tim suggested that using paving stones to create the driveway was not only a highly aesthetically pleasing way to go but

also offered easier access to buried utilities If you simply pave over an entire driveway you don’t have access to the pipes underneath should any need arise that requires you to access them With paving stones you can simply remove the existing "pavers", do the work you need and then put them back! This can simplify things and allow you to resolve any issues at a minimal cost while maintain-ing the beauty of your driveway In terms of retaining walls, if you are already repairing or replacing your driveway you may find that it’s a good time to put in a retaining wall One nice feature of a retaining wall is that it can transform your landscape into a relaxing oasis It is so nice to be able to come home to your ‘castle’ and just relax and enjoy the peace and beauty of your home and yard I have known Tim for years now and he’s as honest as the day is long and would be happy to quote you on a driveway project or

In one of my first articles in What's On Digest I wrote about the difference between good debt and bad debt The debt you incur when you take out a mortgage to buy a home, get a student loan or take out a business development loans are all considered good debt Mortgages are considered one of the safest debts to have because on average house prices always go up Over the past several years the story’s been a little different and many people have found that the equity they once had in their home has vanished It doesn’t take much, an injury, a job loss, a marriage breakdown to put you in the position that you can no longer afford to make that next mortgage payment

Simply put, after several months of missed pay-ments your home will go into foreclosure and your mortgage company will sell your house At this point, some people will be home free so to speak! That is if the bank was able to cover all their costs including the mortgage, realtor fees, legal fees, taxes and any penalties If those costs aren’t covered, this is the point where good debt turns BAD! Banks don’t like to lose money so they are going to come after you for the difference and that becomes bad debt Lawyers aren’t cheap, the housing market isn’t as strong as it once was and costs add up quickly so what seems like a small shortfall can become a big bad debt

Thankfully it’s not as awful as it seems be-cause being a bad debt it’s now an unsecured debt and there are solutions to relieve you from the debt load If you’ve had to walk away from your home and you feel like you’re carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders, it’s time to call for a free consultation

She still has it, and her years or experience in life and music come out best when she sings BLUES

Really she is best known world-wide for her 1974 mega-hit "Midnight at the Oasis,"which received several Grammy nominations, and enshrined her forever in the hearts of Baby Boomers everywhere; but despite her considerable pop music success, her 50-year career could best be described a long and

adventurous odyssey through the various forms of American Roots Music During the folk revival of the early '60s, she began exploring and singing early Blues, Bluegrass and Appalachian "Old Timey" Music, beginning her recording career in 1963 with the Even Dozen Jug Band and shortly thereafter, joining the very popular Jim Kweskin Jug Band, touring and recording with them throughout the '60s

In the 40 years since "Midnight at the Oasis," Maria has toured extensively worldwide and has recorded 40 solo albums covering all kinds of American Roots Music, including Gospel, R&B, Jazz and Big Band (not to mention several award-winning children's albums) She has now settled comfortably into her favorite idiom, the Blues Often joining forces with some of the top names in the business, Maria has recorded and produced on-average an album per year, several of which have been nominated for Grammies and other awards

80+ and Going StrongLive Long & Be Strong As we grow from children to teens and then on into adulthood our perspective on things changes The child views life from a very ego-centric point of view This is nature’s way of ensuring his or her survival and implanting important lessons firmly into long term memory As a teen-ager the awareness of "self" emerges and new experiences begin to prepare the teen for adult life In the twenties and thirties adults are still learning and growing through varied work, family, and educational situations In fact recent scientific evidence suggests that the human brain is still growing right through until about age 25 If this is true then in some sense adult-hood, or at least personality solidification, may be viewed as really taking root around that time This is good news for parents who wish to help their children or teenagers cultivate life-skills that will see them though their lives and into their senior years You still have time so don't give up if your teen still sleeps till noon! One personality trait that is well documented as a key strength for adults as they move into their 80's and beyond is the capacity for not giving up The resiliency or "stick-with-it-ness" factor is often cited as contributing to greater happiness in life There is also a health connection in resilient people that is not found in people who have given up or stopped trying Of course many other factors come into play such as activity levels, diet, social contact and family interactions So what can we do to foster resilience in people and ensure they have long and happy lives? Here are a few ideas

1. Do crossword puzzles Go to your LOCAL bookstore and by a book of age-appropriate crosswords Make sure that the one for whom you bought the book finishes the puzzle Don't let them quit half-way A completed crossword is a beautiful thing

2. READ!! Go and borrow or purchase a book or give a kid a book (a real book is better than an e-book) and set up a plan for reading it entirely It's not OK to "get bored" of the book and not finish The satisfaction of finishing a book or puzzle and seeing it through is its' own reward and helps build patience and mental resilience

3. Walk, Run, Work-out, Join a team or group Get out and get active Some company has a saying: "Just Do It!" The more involved and active you are the more resilient you will be when life throws you a curve ball

If you find you are in charge of packing lunches, books, rock collections and the like, here are a few of the most important reminders:

1 The weight of your child’s backpack should only be 10-15% of their body weight

2 To help reduce the weight, pack only what is needed for each day

3 Pick a pack that is long and slim and hugs your child’s back It should not extend below the level of their hip joints

4 Place the heaviest objects closest to your child’s back and towards the bottom of the pack

5 Pick a backpack with two wide, well padded shoulder straps and a waist belt

6 Teach you child to put their backpack on by placing it on a table, stepping back against the backpack, fastening the waist belt and snugging the shoulder straps, and then stepping forward to take the weight of the pack Reverse this order for removing the pack

Proper fit and use of backpacks are essential in maintaining the health of your child’s developing spine A heavy backpack or one that is carried improperly (slung over one shoulder) forces the developing spine and postural muscles into compensating patterns This will place undue stress on the mid and lower back Over time this can lead to distorted postures, muscle strain, headaches, back pain, neck pain and even nerve damage

So remember to Pack it Light and Wear it Right Your child’s health is worth it!!
